I'm very much enjoying this serial. I've heard good things about Malinda Lo's writing, but this episode is very much in keeping with the overarching style of this story, so I'm not sure how much insight it gives into her personal oeuvre.

On to episode four (Season One) of Tremontaine titled A Wake in Riverside written by Malinda Lo.

An unexpected offer from the Duke de Tremontaine forces a difficult decision upon Rafe. Pursuing her infatuation with the forger Tess, Kaab stumbles across evidence of murder . . . and hears the tale of a legendary crime. Meanwhile, Micah takes a bold step forward in unlocking the mystery of celestial navigation, putting the security of Kaab's people at risk.

Yes! Kaab has finally been able to get a hold of Tess. Wooing a girl with the best chocolate is a very smooth move. It doesn’t take Diane long to find out what the Duke is up to and her revenge will be served cold. Can’t wait! Really enjoyed Malinda Lo’s contribution.

The narration is done by Sarah Mollo-Christensen (Kaab, Micah, and Tess), Nick Sullivan (Rafe and William Tielman, Duke Tremontaine) and Katherine Kellgren (Diane, Duchess Tremontaine).

Available on Realm.

f/f, m/m, m/f it’s all very fluent and gay

Themes: sex, swordplay, scandal and hot chocolate!

So far this seems along with Episode 2 to be the best two written parts of the four part serial so far. This was my first read by author Malinda Lo, really like her writing a lot, flows perfectly and will have to explore her writing more.

Amused that no one yet has discovered that Micah really is a girl, not a boy but like how Ixkaab's character develops more and more and still my two favorite characters in this one.

The parts about Rafe and William's relationship, are the way Joel Derfner should have approached his writing in Heavenly Bodies, verse the disjointed hot mess he wrote.

Plus the other good thing with this one is that you realize just how evil the Duchess is, she's really fucked things up for the Tremontaine estate and speculating that her deceit once discovered could lead her to murder.

In all liking this serial so far, have two new authors to explore their writing further and that's really why I decided to read this series in the first place.

The image of the Duchess Tremontaine grinding her teeth over dinner was pretty entertaining. Really liking Kaab the most of all the characters, and her chemistry with Tess is delicious. All the episodes have been solid so far.

Another good entry. I like the approach to sexuality - no prejudice, no bigotry. Theres m/m - Will and Rafe, f/f - Kaab and Tess (well, so far it's in the flirting stage, but I root for them to end up together). Not sure what Micah will end up being, hopefully we'll get some asexual representation? I like how the book portrays her autism and how other characters understand and accomodate her - Rafe helping her with the sensory overload issues was so sweet!
The world here isn't perfect of course, there's corruption, cheating, extreme poverty, slavery in Kaab's "civilised" homeland. But it's so refreshing to see a world freed from some of our most stupid and unreasonable prejudices.

Tremontaine - episodes 3 and 4 More excellent storytelling in episodes 3 and 4 of Tremontaine, which comes as no great surprise - lots going on for everyone involved, but particularly for Rafe who gets a lot of action both in and out of bed.

In episode 3, 'Heavenly Bodies', we see Micah make a great step forward in mathematical terms and Kaab's realisation that her new friends' greater understanding of the world around them could spell disaster for her family's control of the chocolate trade. The Duchess is trying to get Kaab's family involved in whatever it is she's up to and Kaab takes the opportunity to be in there while it's being discussed, even if it gets her in trouble with her uncle afterwards.

Meanwhile in episode 4, 'A Wake in Riverside', Kaab discovers there's more to Riverside than she previously knew (particularly in terms of the luxuries to which those who live there have never been exposed) and also that one of the first people she encountered in the city has come to a bad end. Alongside this, Rafe really ought to learn never to mix business with pleasure and the Duke really ought to know better than to make arrangements to bring his lover into the same house as his wife, no matter how convenient this idea might be for himself.

I'm still listening to the audio version of these episodes and enjoying them very much - for those who are not tempted by the serial version, there will apparently be an omnibus edition or two available at the end of the run. And aren't the illustrations for each chapter fantastic? They're the work of an Australian artist, Kathleen Jennings.

I am afraid Malinda Lo's writing may just not agree with me, and I'm less than enthused about the direction Tremontaines' plotline is taking so far. Maybe I just invested in the wrong characters, but Rafe's relationship with the Duke only annoys me (in part due to the style of prose it occasions), and I wish Ixkaab was given some more interesting storylines instead.

I did enjoy the way the plot (the crime mystery) progressed and I'm still curious to see what happens next, though.

(Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for a honest review.)

I'm burning through all of Riverside this autumn.

This is mostly a plot-centric episode. There were certainly exciting developments, but no space was left over for lulls in the action or mood-setting passages. The weakest entry so far, but serviceable.

Tess is mourning her protector Ben, Kaab is consoling her, Micah’s discovery of artificial numbers as they relate to navigation, William, the Duke of Tremontaine asks Rafe to be his secretary, to keep him around and to keep him, Diane, the Duchess of Tremontaine is in hock up to her eyebrows, but keeps it from everyone.

These are addicting! I read this on the Kindle.

I'm not sure yet what the overarching plot will be (Diane outsmarts everyone?) but I really love the characters. It's like a unique slice-of-life story each week. And EK was talking the other day about a second season, so YAY YAY YAY.

On to the next! The downside is, It's like when you watch a TV show that's already on it's like 5th season and you want to catch up before the 6th season premier, but you don't manage!

Anyways, season 4 of Tremontaine launches tomorrow!
