Spanning almost seven centuries, this anthology encapsulates the foundation and consolidation of literature written in English, culminating in some of the finest works produced in English in the high Middle Ages.
Have gone back to this book a few times since buying it in Sweden seven years ago or so. Pretty nice collection of a variety of readings in Old and Middle English, with facing page translations of the older stuff. Serves a dual purpose for me, as a place to practice my own OE reading with a convenient "crib" right there, as well as a source of translations for my students in my reading and composition courses. Not what I would necessarily use if I were doing research on a poem, but a handy collection to have.
The amount of interesting and unique texts that you get here, oh my! Treharne makes it fun and sometimes more challanging to read and understand texts, with some having full translations and some just a vocabulary attached to a transcripted ( and that is not to all the words, just the hardest and oddest ones!), and challanges to learn to read Old and Middle English!
