August 14, 2024Well, she got me! I had ever-changing suspicions throughout and not a single one rang true! Recommended to me by a dear friend, this is my first Agatha Christie novel and I am so happy to have read it. If this is the general character of her writing I can't wait to jump into my next Christie mystery!

I read this for our October book club. I expected it to feel a little dated (more like Sherlock Holmes), but I was pleasantly surprised by how timeless it felt. Fast pacing, intriguing plot, even some moral questions to discuss. I feel like it read just as compulsively as it must have at first publication.

Primeiro: não sei o que se passou na minha cabeça para ter achado uma boa ideia ter comprado um livro em estilo de roteiro teatral, deixo aqui minha nota de repúdio a esse formato.
Segundo, foi a primeira história da Agatha que eu realmente li e, além do formato ter atrapalhado, eu assisti a série "And Then There Were None" primeiro e fiquei simplesmente obcecada pela história e, quando eu li o livro, senti que tinha alguma coisa muito errada.
Não gostei do final, preferi mil vezes o final da série, foi uma mudança muito chocante para mim, não sei se em outras versões de E Não Sobrou Nenhum a história toma o mesmo rumo, mas achei bem fraco. Apesar disso me vejo dando uma segunda chance para outro formato de narração, se tiver, e, com certeza, para outros livros da autora, apesar de não ter chegado a terminar as "outras peças" desse livro.

Out of all the plays I only read “And Then There Were None” but I enjoyed it a lot! It was a classic mystery that I was easily hooked into and I am now curious to read more novels from Agatha Christie 😮

I don't like murder mysteries in book form. The author can withhold as much information as they want; who's to say they actually left "enough" clues that the average person can figure it out? And if the author writes a story nobody can figure out, does that really mean they're a masterful mystery writer, or does it just mean they didn't include enough information for anyone to solve it?
Honestly - for the author to reveal that it was one of the 10 guests all along, and only in a post-script type of way, was a big letdown. That's like telling the reader "I made it impossible on purpose; nobody could have ever guessed it, that's why I had to include this epilogue explaining everything!" while snickering down her sleeve. I just don't get the draw.
A judge who has a thirst for murder decides to actually commit a murder - but only for people who "deserved" it (i.e. there was no legal way to prove their crimes). He has the murders match a silly nursery rhyme about soldiers: one choked (poison in a cup), one "overslept" (overdose of sleeping pills), one stayed behind (hit on the back of the head), one chopped in halves (head chopped by an axe), one stung by a bee (drugs to make lethargic, then lethal injection), one "got in Chancery" (judge shot in the head), red herring swallowed one (pushed into the sea and drowned), one hugged by a bear (heavy bear-shaped clock dropped onto one's head), one is "frizzled up" (shot in the heart), and the last one hangs herself (guilty conscience plus trauma of all the other murders). Oh, and one additional murder of the man who made all the island arrangements - death by poison.
The uncatchable crimes: selling drugs & ruining a young girl's life; hit & run double murder; neglecting to administer proper treatment; sending the man who cheated with his wife to the front lines; kicking out a maid who got pregnant out of wedlock & who committed suicide; doctor operated while drunk and killed a patient; one gave false evidence, leading to imprisonment and death; one leaving natives behind to die, out of self-preservation; one allowed a little boy to swim too far out to sea by himself.
The judge actually staged his death with the help of the doctor, who he then drowned in the sea; he writes a note & seals it in a bottle, then throws it in the ocean so someone will find out one day who actually did all those murders. He ends the story by actually shooting himself in the head (apparently he was dying of something anyway).

I know that a lot of people say that this is their favorite Agatha Christie book and I completely understand. This is only the second book by Agatha Christie that I have read and I would say it is my favorite so far.
I honestly don't want to say much about this book because I feel it is best to only know the synopsis going into it. Just know that the story is told very well and the ending is great. Great reveal.
The only downfall to me with the book is the fact that there are 10 characters, and with as fast as the story goes, it can get confusing as to who is whom and their back story. Make sure you create a character list for the book.
I have learned with this book, and other books that are considered classics, never read the introduction or anything online about the book because they can and will spoil part of the book.
If this synopsis sounds interesting, read the book. It is a very good read.

PHEW! What a good, classical read! At first it is a tough tough to get all of the names and storylines down but as the tale unfolds it becomes infinitely easier. This is a phenomenally articulate masterpiece that I could read time and time again. Even though the plot is practically laid out on a silver platter ;) In the very beginning you never quite know what will happen next. This is very commendable because given my prior murder/ mystery readings.... typically you can guess who did it or who will die next but this work was an anomaly. Not until the VERY end was I able to piece everything together which is outstanding and wildly admirable. (I LOVE TO BE STUMPED!) However if you are squeamish or wary of death... this is absolutely NOT the book for you. But if you are seeking a mystery/ thriller that is simply a masterpiece then read 'And Then There Were None' by Agatha Christie. It has done nothing short of make me question the notion of justice and fall in love with Agatha Christie and her works. (likelihood to recommend 8.9/10)

I thought I had read all of Agatha Christie's writings but this one seemed to have slipped away. Many acknowledge this as one of her best mysteries and I do have to agree. We meet 10 strangers who have come to a remote island at the behest of a mysterious host who also isn't even present. It is an odd assortment of eight guests and two servants, and by the time dinner rolls around death will hit. By the end of the long weekend we find the poem "Ten Little Soldiers" has a lot of meaning to them.
The common theme among the guests, as the mysterious gramophone recording states, is that each has a wicked past that is now revealed to all present. And this, the recording announces, will be their death sentence. Over the next few days and nights, as ten are stuck on an island no one can get off of or get onto, as they are picked off one by one by an "accident" or murder that corresponds to the poem. Who is doing it? Why? That is the mystery that drives each of the remaining living people to discover. And by the end, there will be none.
The ending is a real eye-opener. DO NOT read the ending first as you really must read the whole story. I could not put this book down as I needed to know what will happen next each page.

Agatha, você me pegou.
É uma leitura que eu não consegui largar. Já tinha passado da metade do livro e não tinha nenhuma suspeita. Quando comecei a suspeitar, eu tinha duas teorias; a segunda se confirmou e eu não posso levar nenhum crédito por "descobrir" porque nada aconteceu da maneira que eu imaginava. Surpreendente.
Como é um livro muito voltado para enredo, não tem muito desenvolvimento de personagem. Então, eles vão morrendo e morrendo e você não está realmente apegado a nenhum deles. Só quer saber o que vai acontecer e qual é o final.
Uma coisa interessante é que é um livro atemporal. Poderia se passar nos dias de hoje tranquilamente. Poucos autores têm essa habilidade, geralmente esse tipo de história é extremamente datada.
Gostei, recomendo, vou ler outros livros da autora. Mas para mim ainda faltou alguma coisa que não sei expressar para que eu considere esse livro a obra prima que muitas pessoas o consideram.

I've never read an Agatha Christie novel, watched tons of TV and movies based on her books. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was a bit dated in the use of language but all in all, it was a good mystery.
I was trying to figure out the mystery from the start and though I might have suspected the right person, she'd managed to twist my thoughts off to another and then yet another. By the time the story had finished, I was left pleased in that it was a good mystery and I didn't solve it within the first few pages.
The only drawback to the story was that it felt ... lackluster. It just didn't have any flare, it felt a bit flat or borish at times. All the characters come to life but there is just something lacking as you read the story.
I'd read another, it wasn't so bad I couldn't sit through another one of her books.

Read a lot of Agatha Christie when I was younger and remember reading her books with ease. I'm trying to find books that are difficult to put down, otherwise, I find I rarely pick them up again and they sit on my nightstand for months (or longer). I was hoping her writing still struck me the same and was gifted this a copy of this book. There are MANY active characters in this book, so at first this book was a bit overhelming. I couldn't quite grasp each character and found myself flipping back to previous pages to recall who was who. Finally, I got a pad a paper and wrote down each character and brief notes about each. This made reading much easier. All in all, it was a pretty enjoyable murder mystery. I finished it over a few days, so it was more or less exactly what I was looking for!

I am not a huge fan of the mystery genre, but I loved reading this book even though it was assigned for Summer Reading from school. This book is suspenseful and full of deception and cleverness. Agatha Christie creates a murder mystery with the general feeling of Clue, but with even more layers intertwined. She would use foreshadowing and clues to hint you towards the next person who will die or who the murderer is, but then she surprises you with an unexpected twist. Agatha Christie must have put an immense amount of thought into this murder mystery because she connects everything flawlessly and she never failed to surprise.

This was my first Agathie Christie book and it TOTALLY blew my mind!! I enjoyed it from start to finish (even though it did scare me at times...). Agatha Christie's writing stlye is very different from writing styles that I usually read, but it didn't take me too long to get used to. I find it so amazing how alive her characters become. She only gave the characters short descriptions, but you find out so much more about them in their interactions! Overall, this was a great book. It was beautifully written and had me on the edge of my seat the entire read. I recommend it to anyone looking for a good murder mystery.

And Then There Were None may have been the greatest mystery novel I have ever read. It had everything I’d ever wanted to be in a mystery novel, while being slightly violent. The only turn off for this novel is that the ending is a bit confusing, which makes me think if there are alternative endings to this book. But, I definitely thoroughly enjoyed myself reading it, and every other play in the collection. That said, the third play in the collection, Verdict, has kind of a boring ending and is not as exciting as the others, even though it still had some “wow” moments that always makes Agatha Christie’s novels so exciting.

Having read several of Agatha Christie's novels, many just this year, I have to say this is definitely her masterpiece. It doesn't follow the usual flow of her other novels, with a central character putting the pieces of a murder together. Instead there is no singular central character but rather many antagonists. I found it hard to figure out 'who dun it', which isn't always the case, and I thoroughly enjoyed that. This was also a fairly dark story for Christie, with no real comedic relief from a likeable character. A very excellent read and I'd highly recommend to any fans of murder mystery as its perhaps the measuring stick for all others of that genre.

fazia tempo que não sentia medo genuíno lendo um livro kkkk essa foi minha primeira leitura da ágatha e eu amei demais. um livro com uma premissa tão “simples” sem nada de sobrenatural envolvido não parece assustador, até você começar a ler ele.
Acho que nem preciso entrar no tópico escrita por que nesse ponto não tem mais o que falar, ja sabemos o quão bom eh! ( se bem q o livro eh bem antiguinho e aí palavras como queer, são colocadas como algo estranho e gay como uma pessoa animada kkkk ).
EU PESSOALMENTE não gostei de uma parte do plot mas adoro ele mesmoooo assim.
