Moving into a new house in a new neighborhood is never easy, but with it being a holiday away from friends and traditions is a double downer for this family of 4.

Told in the voice of the eldest daughter, who is upset by every divergent event, big or small, they try to compensate for all that is missing. But only so much can be done with things still sealed up (impressed with so many boxes of books) and no new friends.

A trip back to their old neighborhood and friends for the celebration brightens the general mood, but a series of unfortunate events casts that plan aside.

Back home, an invite from the fathers boss to a church service gives hope for some semblance of normal. An invitation to join the elderly couple solves the food dilemma, but still a boring night for the children...until they find that there will be grandchildren of near ages also at the table. A joyful New Year it became.

Thought the addition of a stuffed animal in the synagogue pew was a cute touch, as was the recipe for Easy Baked Apple Dessert at the end.

A child's book that feels so real. Life has it's struggles and interruptions, but it is a good start to a New Year.

The story focuses more on the material aspects of the holiday, which is a little odd given the holiday's religious background. But then, maybe the materialistic is all that young children can really understand?
