When a Warrior Woos a Lass by Julie Johnstone is book Six in the "Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts" series. This is the story of Lena MacLeod and Alex MacLean. I have read read the previous books but feel this can be a standalone book.
Lena was taken from her family around 7 years old and later forced to marry a evil and abusive man. Her family thinking she was dead at one point but found her and killed her abusive husband. Now she has been back in her families home in Dunvegan Castle for about two years. Alex was apart of the team of people that brought her home and away from the abuse. So he knows some of what happened to her. Alex too has been an abusive past that still haunts him til this day. When Alex and Lena are ordered to marry by the King they move forward to do so and Alex vows to protect Lena. Lena is learning to care for her somewhat distant husband and she is protective of him also.
Each book I read in this series I think is my favorite but this one has a soft spot with how both of them showed the other love and help to heal their wounds.

Story beings in 1360 AD on the Isle of Skye, Scotland

The past haunts them. Treachery awaits them. Love will save them.

A shattered lass…A tortured highlander…A union…

This is a wonderful story of a badly damaged man and woman who have horrific pasts and how they come together to become whole again. It was truly incredible. It's the first book I've read by Julie Johnstone and the first Scottish Romance as well but it certainly won't be the last. I've already purchased the next book in the series.

Our Hero: Laird Alex who is working for the king is playing a dangerous game to gather information that will make him look like a traitor to get at the truth. He believes he will never marry and has only been with women who are into domination, ties, bonds, and pain...along with the pleasure. He was horrifically abused when he was sent to the old Laird to be trained along with other young boys. They were required to live at his home and it was brutal torture day in and day out, every kind of abuse imaginable including times when the boys were made to live in the dungeon. One day Alex's father made a surprise visit and found a girl who was a friend-only to Alex on the floor murdered in front of Alex because he wouldn't give in to the sexual advances with the old Laird. His father was horrified by what he saw. If he had arrived a moment later, his son, Alex, would have been molested. He took his son home but never bothered to free the other boys who were in worse shape than Alex. Alex tried to go back and help them unsuccessfully when his father and men caught up with him. During his time with the old Laird not only was he abused but the Laird's wife seduced him and introduced him to 'the dark side of sex.' Because of what had happened to Alex he could only have sex if he inflicted pain and he dominated. His father demanded that Alex never tell another living soul and he made him feel shamed, as though it was his fault. He told him if he ever told anyone they would think him weak.

Our Heroine: Lena has lived a life of horror. Bought by a very evil man as his property/wife she was abused in every way you could possibility imagine and then some. This was his and his family's way to torture her brother who was a Laird in his own right. After years she was finally able to escape and then her husband was murdered. For two years she has done nothing. She won't dance because she cannot tolerate a mans' touch without it sending her into what I call a modern day panic attack. She would much rather remain a wallflower for the rest of her life. The King has approached her brother telling him he was going to have to have her married off. The King is the one who decides who marries whom and to him a marriage is a strategy placing a woman who can aid and help her man in conflicts and battles and even better if she is pretty and can hold the enemy's attention. Her dead husband's family has already sent word to the King that they want to buy her back with the intent of more horrid abuse to get at her brother and family. The only good thing to happen to her lately was that very evening she had danced with Alex without having an attack.

The King needs to get Lena married pronto because her dead husband's family wants to buy her again for nefarious purposes. He knows of the awful abuse she has suffered at the hands of her dead husband and his family. He's given her a choice between three men but he is starting to notice the draw between Lena and Alex.

Oh yes! This was super great!!! I definitely recommend it and will reread it soon.

It seemed to take too long to get to the much awaited answers and to find out to what degree the hero suffered? Raped? Sodomized? Beaten? Burned? And then it lasted 2 seconds and on to other things. Either that or it could stand to be shortened.

This was my first Julie Johnstone book, but it certainly won't be my last.

Lena MacLeod is the widow of an evil man and has the scars to prove it - inside and out, she feels broken and cannot abide being touched. She returned to her brother's home in hopes of healing, but now two years later, she is no closer than she was when she first arrived.

Alex MacLean has known Lena for years and cares for her, but he too has scars and knows the darkness in him would destroy her. They meet again at her brother's wedding and are both shocked when the king arrives and commands them to wed. The king also has a mission for Alex, but it will involve keeping more secrets from Lena.

The king and Alex come to an agreement, but in doing so, it makes Alex appear to be a traitor. Lena is confused, Alex is kind and gentle with her, he praises her strength and urges her to let go of the pain holding her prisoner. In his care, Lena begins to heal and is on her way to being the woman she was before she married Findlay Campbell. But she knows that Alex is keeping secrets and knows those secrets could kill any love blossoming between them. Repeatedly she asks him to trust her and share with her - but Alex feels intense guilt and shame from his past and refuses.

Lena's half-sister Marsaili has agreed to go with Lena to her new home, but Lena knows there is something Marsaili is keeping from her. When Lena learns Marsaili's secret, she is shocked and not sure who to turn to, she wants to tell Alex, but Marsaili has sown seeds of doubt and while she longs to trust him, his refusal to share his past makes it impossible for her to do so. So she writes to her brother. When Alex intercepts her letter, he knows it is time to enact the king's plan. He plans to take Marsaili and confront the Stewart, but he has no intention of letting Lena join them.

Lena learns they are planning to leave and is heartbroken, but when she learns his true mission, she insists on joining them. They arrive at the Stewart's castle and Alex's past comes rushing back. Alex must seemingly betray Lena's brother Lachlan and take him prisoner. He leave to do the Stewarts bidding and Lena is left at the castle. Lena learns much about Alex's past and is used to punish Alex - but Lena has grown strong and she will not break. When Alex saves her, she begs him to share his past, telling him that the secrets will destroy the love they share. But even after he does so, they are not done yet, they still have to complete their mission and save Marsaili and Lachlan.

This was a very well written story, it flowed well and was almost impossible to put down. It had secrets, shame, heartache, steamy love scenes, healing, acceptance, action and some very evil villains. But it also had sweet, tender moments as well as a truly beautiful love story and a very hard won HEA.

This is the sixth book in the series and I will admit feeling a little lost at times, events in the past are eluded to, but not having read the previous books, I wasn't really sure what happened - but those past events played a significant role in this book and while I can imagine what happened, I was not given enough backstory to know for sure. Which is why I gave this book 4 stars vs 5 stars. I am sure if you have been following the series, you will have a much better understanding of the past events and LOVE this book.

Lena has no problem asking Alex those hard questions, "...still staring down, she said, “Do ye mean to continue to carry on with the lasses?” His mouth parted at her words as he stared at her." Alex is very possessive, “She dunnae need ye,” Alex responded before she could. “She has me,” he finished on a growl." I liked this book Alex and Lena made a great pair.

Holy cow, Julie Johnstone has written another amazing story!!
Kidnapped as a child, abused in adulthood, Lena MacLeod wants nothing more than to be left to herself and try for a normal life, sans husband. An impossibility with the brothers (and their wives) she has been reunited with who alternate between trying to shield her and smother her with good intentions. When the king has gives an edict that she’s to marry all her fears spring to life. Her only saving grace is she has been ordered to marry Alex MacLean, the only man who seems to understand what she’s been through.
Alex MacLean feels something for the beautiful sister of his best friend but knows he will never be able to act on any feelings. The fact that she’s his best friend’s sister only plays a minor factor, the main reason Alex knows this is he has a dark side that no one knows, nor will ever know, about. A dark side he can attribute to one man and one woman. When the king approaches Alex regarding a matter that no one is to know about, he doesn’t stop there as he demands a marriage between Alex and Lena.
As Alex and the king put their plan in motion, Alex is torn between his loyalty to the king and his feelings of what is best for Lena. But as Alex tries to juggle both he soon comes to learn that his wife is a force to be reckoned with. Will Alex help Lena to heal and let her do the same for him or will he destroy any chance he could have for a happily ever after?
The sixth book in Ms. Johnstone’s Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts series is just as amazing as the first!

I read the first four books years ago and I remember being titillated by the darker themes and descriptions in the stories. They were my first foray into less than flowery romance.

When it came time to read book 5, though, I was apprehensive. The darker themes from the other books had all been outside the romance. This book would brush them inside the romance. I judged myself not ready for it and forgot about this series until a few days ago.

The book is most definitely not a stand-alone. The stories are overlapped and previous characters make more than cameo appearances.

The FMC, Lena, was rescued one or two books ago (can't remember exactly) and is suffering from the abuse her dead husband inflicted upon her. She is paradoxically shrewish and terrified.

The MMC, Alex, has had to force down his own trauma for years and empathizes with Lena's sufferings. He is very attracted to her but believes himself to be the opposite of what she needs.

Story happens and they are forced to wed. She very easily opens up to him and she slowly regains her confidence and strength. It was beautifully written.

The hero's healing journey on the other hand was a travesty. Hints are given here and there about his past but it took so long for us to be told what it was that by that point I really didn't care. Turns out, his wasn't as bad as the hints were implying. While it's abhorrent to compare traumas in real life, this is fiction, so compared to what the FMC endured for years his was not that terrible. But what made it so much worse was the fact that his confession was made in the form of a paragraph, at the 89% mark, with a ticking clock 'cause they have like two minutes before they need to go rescue people. Next thing we know, he can sleep through the night holding his wife because speaking the words once was enough for his nightmares and his extremely violent sleep-fighting to completely disappear.

I guess the power of wuv'

is stronger than watching a character get better through care, trust and a safe environment (also, it heals sexual preferences that have been prominent in one's life since they were sixteen years old)

What's really annoying is that we see that for the FMC and not the MMC, which is a subtle way of saying men need to 'suck it up' and I hate that message.

Also, with time, I've come to realize I prefer real historical figures to be casually mentioned and barring that, to make brief cameo appearances only. I don't like it when they are key instruments in the plot. It takes away from the fiction/escapism for me. I'm not certain if the King David in this stories is David I of Scotland because he was also warring with a nephew, but the nephew (according to Wikipedia) was not named 'The Stewart'. However, I still didn't like how important he is to the plot.

I'll be stopping this series. I think I either outgrew it or (more likely) I've read better authors that deal with darker elements.

The heroine of this story is Lena MacLeod has been kidnapped as a child, abused as an adult horribly by her late husband both mentally and physically. Her brother Graham killed the man Findlay Campbell who kidnapped, humiliated, thrashed tortured and scarred her but now she can’t even let any man touch her! Even in the most non threatening ,innocent, platonic, casual way! Her brother’s know it’s just a matter of time before the King will want another favor! That is for another clan alliance to bind another clan to the King. They have to please their King for he could take away titles, lands holding with a snap of his fingers. Even if they do support him and consider him a friend. Yet the King will want to use Lena and force her in to marry in another powerful clan. They hope it won’t be anytime soon as they would encourage that she not be forced but make her own choice of husband. They know how damaged she is, but also know the reality of the situation with granting the King favors. As there was no real choice in the matter!

Laird Alex MacLean is the hero of this novel. A childhood friend who has been Laird since he was fifteen summers. His best friends are Lena’s brother’s. He always defended and protected Lena as a child if older children bullied her. Now he sees her in a completely different light as the most beautiful woman he has ever known. Of course he has his own demons as one who has been abused he sees the signs. Alec was abused horrible by the Laird who was supposed to protect and train him when he was twelve. It is why he can’t marry or have a normal relationship with a woman. So he understands Lena and would kill her former husband himself if he wasn’t already dead!

One night at a family wedding feast Alex’s sister who is married to Lena’s brother Lachlan talks him into asking Lena to dance. As she always hides in dark corners at public feasts and celebrations to avoid speaking with men or socializing. Of course Lena knows this is a man she has always considered a dear friend. Yet they both have been attracted to each other for a long time. They dance and Alex wishes he could heal her. He knows because of his deep dark past it’s impossible. He can’t even make love to a woman without pain involved and his previous partners know this. He would never abuse a woman to his darkness. Alex is upfront to all his partners ahead of time about his expectations in the bedroom. Yet for one dance he wants to pretend he is a normal man though he does want to chase Lena’s demons away and make her strong again.

Then the king appears and he wants Lena to marry another he does chose three good men. Alex can’t help but feel jealous and the observant king notices. As the King is actually protecting her as someone dangerous wants to wed her. Then it is Alex he want for Lena’s husband he can see the feeling between these two. Alex doesn’t want this as he can’t be a real husband due to his violent nightmares. He has nearly killed his man the only one to know his secrets. Alex worms away in Lena’s heart loving and protecting and trying to heal her. Yet he won’t share his secrets which starts a great divide between the couple. Plus the King want Laird Alex to play traitor where all the people he cares for and calls friend will hate him including Lena. Plus it’s back where his nightmare and abuse started so the memories and guilt are horrific. Plus Lena wants to join him on this adventure and there are some who plan on taking their revenge out on him. So danger is lurking at every corner what will be the result? Death, violence or worse? Can these broken fences and shattered hearts be mended? You will have to find out!

Have the Kleenex ready! As Julie Johnstone pens a very emotional heartbreaking story I could not put down! I sobbed through this one a lot! My favorite of the entire series though I have loved each one. Another riveting story any reader would want to revisit and read again. Yes it is that magnificent and awe-inspiring!

Readers must read this masterpiece of a story it’s totally brilliant! Julie Johnstone absolutely outdid herself with this swoon worthy abused Laird and his childhood love.

You can read as a stand alone book, but I highly recommend to read the entire series! To see the relationships of the other MacLeod siblings and other fantastic characters. As some might call this a second chance at romance. You will find out more of the history between Lena and Alex, in book 5,“How a Scot Surrenders to a Lady. It has all the elements Scottish historical romance readers love, plus riveting page turning adventure, suspense, mystery, swoon worthy hero with non stop action! It teaches you to believe in healing, faith, trust and of course love.

I absolutely and unequivocally loved this book so much!

I received this book from the author for a fair and honest review. I voluntarily agreed to read, review, and blog. All words, ideas and thoughts are my own.

This is an interesting story of two damaged people who are pushed into marriage.
The heroine was in an abusive marriage with her previous husband.
There is a strength to her though her abuse was very severe.
"she could not tolerate a man even touching her, other than her brothers placing a brief hand to her elbow to guide her or giving her a swift hug."
There are no detailed scenes of the abuse but in flashback and odd memories we see some of what she endured.
The Hero and heroine knew each other when they were children.
He always admired her and falls quickly for her but he as a darkness in his past so finds it difficult to confide this in her.
There is an mystery political plot in the background to their relationship which means more secrets.

The Hero refers to some women from his past, one mostly, in his thoughts, some glimpses but no detail. He does not come across as a manwhore type though obviously he's been with several women.

The Hero promises to be faithful, he is besotted with her, he is gentle, patient and kind.

Best to read the series in order, though I haven't but there are references to previous couple's stories so to avoid spoilers, read in order if you intend to read the series.

There is other woman drama, an ex for him, plus memories of abuse in his past.
The heroine has dreams and memories of her now dead husband.

Breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series.

HEA.

This is Book 6 in the Entangled Hearts series, and it's just as amazing as the previous books in this series. Julie really knows how to draw a reader into the story right from the start. It's a well-written story with a very complex and riveting plot. I was hooked from start to finish! The characters are well-developed and very interesting and likable. It's got emotion, drama, suspense, action, humor and romance! It's a winner for me! I highly recommend this book!

Book 6 in the Entangled Hearts and wow, I thought this spectacular, the story is intriguing from the beginning and held my attention, Lena and Alex have a few issues that need addressing, and there are secrets to come forth and trust to be earned, especially with a plot being devised involving Alex. I really don't want to say more, grab a copy, I loved it

Better than the last one. I felt the connection with the characters a little more and it didn't feel like the previous book with different character names so that was a plus.

As with the others the writing is clean and pretty much error free. Compelling characters etc but....

Again with dropping shit with no resolution. She constantly introduces characters you care about and has things happen to them you desperately want resolved then meh the end... NO! WAIT! Ugh.

Publisher's Description:

The past haunts them. Treachery awaits them. Love will save them.

A shattered lass…

Scarred by the cruel whims of her late husband, Lena MacLeod lives in fear of men and marriage. So when the king’s edict obliges her to wed Scottish warrior Alex MacLean, she never expects to feel safe, let alone happy. But behind Alex’s fierce exterior lies a gentle, gallant highlander who renews her soul, emboldens her, and offers her the one thing she never thought she would possess—true love. Now that Alex has her whole heart, she’ll settle for nothing less than all of his.

A tortured highlander…

Haunted by violent nightmares of his dark past, Alex MacLean has put off getting married for as long as possible. But now he finds himself the husband of the fragile, beautiful Lena, and he’s drawn to her as he has never been to another. He vows to protect and heal her, and as she grows stronger, so does his love for her. Yet, his horrible memories and a treacherous task are preventing him from giving himself to her entirely, and the secrets he harbors threaten to destroy their life together.

A union…

When Lena uncovers a dangerous scheme involving Alex, she embarks on a desperate journey to save the man she loves. But Alex still hasn’t let her in, and he runs the risk of losing her—and his life—unless he can accept that his once delicate wife is now an ally strong enough to light his way.

My Thoughts:

Julie Johnstone has a knack for enchanting her readers with her wonderful highland tales of love and adventure. This book is no exception.

Lena is a scared woman. Not physically, but mentally and emotionally so. Her first husband was cruel and unfeeling.

Alex also has his flaws. He has violent nightmares caused by a past that has scared him too.

When King David orders them to marry, it is part of a scheme for Alex to flush out traitors. Alex is not allowed to reveal his part in the King's scheme but instead has been directed to appear as a turncoat himself.
Will these two be able to overcome obvious strikes against their relationship?

I enjoyed this read from the start. I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 4 of 5 flames.
The intimacy between our hero and heroine starts sadly and ends up a real joy.

I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title from the author to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

I was gifted a copy of this book.
Lena MacLeod has returned to her clan’s home of Dunvegan Castle after suffering through a brutally abusive marriage. She has attempted to be invisible for two years – holding herself aloof from the rest of the MacLeod clan. But everything changes the night of her younger brother’s wedding, when Alex Mac Lean asks her to dance. “A shiver of panic swept through Lena, and she stumbled into Alex’s unyielding body. When she looked up to apologize and put distance between him, the words caught in her throat, her hand frozen on his chest. His heart was racing beneath her palm, as if he was just as bothered by the prospect of a dance with her as she was with him.…. Lena stood there gaping at Alex. As he stared back, it seemed as though a cloak had lifted from his eyes, and the tenderness in their depths sucked the air from her lungs. ‘I ken ye dunnae wish to dance,’ he said in a voice as deep as an endless loch.”
I enjoyed “When a Warrior Woos Lass”, its strong characters and the romantic tension between Alex and Lena were captivating. Alex has his own secret demons that he is battling and it is his shame of these demons that threaten to destroy his relationship with Lena.
Although this book is a stand-alone story, I believe I would have appreciated the depth of the characters had I read the rest of the series’ first.
I was disappointed in Lena’s quick surrender to Alex. I felt if someone had suffered that severely in a prior relationship, she would have taken much more time to consummate her second marriage.
There was some sexual content, but it wasn’t too graphic. However, I did enjoy Lena’s transformation from fearful to brave.
If you enjoy medieval romance, Johnstone has written a very well-crafted story with wonderful messages of redemption and restoration.

This is by far not the first book by Julie Johnston that I have read and it not the first book in this series either and again this hero and his heroine took my heart by storm.

Seeing the two of them so vulnerable and on the other hand so determined to be there for the other one, wow... I couldn't stop falling in love with them. They are so sweet and hurt and messed up and both of them just desperately want to help the one they..yes, the one they love.
Somehow it was Lena who became stronger and more courageous with each page that I turned and the big, strong warrior, well, she made it her mission to get him there as well. Sometimes it's not the things you can fight or even touch that keep you prisoner but the things, the memories that your mind provides. And, well, despite his gentleness and his kind heart, Alex definitely has his share of baggage and for a man as strong as him, it is not easy to let someone else in to help.

Seeing Lena and Alex free themselves from the hurt and the pain of their past was amazing. Lena is a wonderful heroine, warm, loving and, yes, courageous, even when things get rough and I was so happy for her and for Alex. Alex might just learn that he has married more than he has bargained for ...in a good way though. And Alex, wow, hard, demanding, fair, kind and gentle and just amazing.

Captivating and sweet, this book kept me glued to my reader. I loved the story and meeting old friends again, I loved those wonderful, complex and interesting characters and I was captivated once more by the author's way to tell those stories. After having read this book, I started to re-read the series and I must admit that I am really looking forward to the next books by Julie Johnstone and I just hope that we will learn more about our hero and our heroine in the future and, of course, about their friends as well.

My heart ached as I read this story. Emotional, intriguing and engaging of the senses, Julie Johnstone has such a way of engaging the reader so that you feel part of the story as you turn the page. Lena MacLeod has been emotionally scarred in her childhood and by her late husband and does not have any hope of finding true happiness. She really just wants to stay away from men and hopefully never have to remarry. Unfortunately (or really fortunate in the end) she has to wed Alex MacLean by the King's order. A seasoned warrior, Lena is surprised at how gentle Alex is and feels there is hope. Alex has his own mental scars that haunt him and feels he holds back from Lena due to those memories. As the king's order for Alex to marry Lena had other conditions Alex has to carry out, it appears he is keeping secrets from Lena. This is where Alex shows how strong she has become and is determined to help Alex and rid him of his past demons. Read to find out what happens to this fragile couple and be prepared to tear up and cheer as you are led through their journey. I was gifted a copy of this book.

The sixth book in the Entangled Heats series is and exciting Highland adventure full of intrigue, secrets, and a mission in treachery. It is also the story of two people who have survived torture they cannot bring themselves to share with anyone. The story begins when King David tasks Alex MacLean to secretly acquire the names of Lairds involved in the effort to take his throne. In order to carry out his mission, he must play traitor. The King also requires that Alex and Lena MacLeod marry. Tortured as a youth, Alex doesn’t trust himself to take a wife. Grossly abused in her first marriage, Lena has no desire to marry again. She cannot even abide the touch of a man. The way ahead will definitely not be easy.

When a Warrior Woos a Lass is part of the MacLeod Saga, but is strong enough to stand alone. The hero and heroine are strong characters who have to deal with their personal demons as well as try to make a marriage neither of them wanted succeed. The secondary characters are familiar from previous stories. The plot keeps you reading to find out what will happen next. I recommend this one. It is a winner.

Lena MacLeod lives in fear of men and marriage. So when King David dictates that she weds Scottish warrior Alex MacLean, she never expects to feel safe, let alone happy as she’s unable to bear he touch of a man following her abusive former marriage. Alex’s fierce exterior hides a gentle, gallant highlander who renews her soul, emboldens her, and offers her the one thing she never thought she would possess—true love. Now that Alex has her whole heart, she’ll settle for nothing less than all of his. However Alex is haunted by violent nightmares of his dark past when he was an apprentice. He’s drawn to Lena as he has never been to another. He vows to protect her & gradually they learn to trust but he still hides his secret. When Lena uncovers a dangerous scheme involving Alex, she insists on accompanying him.
A well written page turning novel of two people overcoming their pasts to find trust & love. The pace of the book is very good, there’s intrigue & secrets which all add to this engrossing book that I found very hard to put down. The characters are well developed, Lena begins as a frightened, defeated woman who grows into a strong, determined, fearless wife. Alex is seen as a hard warrior but he’s faor, caring & willing to lay down his life for those he loves. The relationship between the pair grows from friendship to lovers to soul mates. I thoroughly enjoyed the book & look forward to more books from the author

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Leana MacLeod has suffered a lot in her young life and it has left her with physical and mental scars. Unfortunately even that trauma doesn't stop Scotland's King David from using her in his plans.

Alex MacLean was made made Laird of his clan at only fifteen years old after the death of his father. He has always done his best to be a fearless warrior and leader that his father would have been proud of. He carries a shameful secret from his youth that affects him still. The King' s latest demands will push him to his limits.

This is a very emotional story that will really pull you into our character's lives. They have a lot of difficult and dangerous times to face. Wonderful historical romance at its best.

This is part of a series that I'm totally addicted to, but you can quite easily read it as a stand alone. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I loved every page.

Julie Johnstone does it again. I was blessed with this book and it turned out to be an early Christmas present. This time she transports us to the world of Lena MacLeod. By all appearances a damaged, victim. Then she is required to marry Liard Alex MacLean. Lena found out that she was a survivor. It took a fellow survivor to let her know that she was not alone. This book is wonderfully inspiring. For anyone feeling marginalized in their lives, reading this tome reminds us that there is always hope. What could be a better tail at Christmas? I highly recommend this book.

Kimberly's Thoughts

This second chance romance by Julie Johnstone is a wonderful read and my favorite of this series so far. Two broken people coming together to try to repair all the hurt that has been reaped upon them in their short lives.

Alex MacLean has been through indescribable atrocities which haunt him every time he lays his head down to rest and Lena MacLeod was only saved from an evil husband and his cruelty by his demise. Once again, of use to a King who has an agenda, Lena is thrown into the marriage pool, where Alex vows to be the gentle husband Lena deserves after all the pain.

Secrets will keep these kindred souls apart if they don't open up their hearts and minds to each other, as the intrigue going on around them threatens their union. Will they overcome the barriers? Can Lena break down that wall that Alex has placed between them? Read this compelling story to find out all these answers and much more.

If I had to rate When A Warrior Woos A Lass by Julie Johnstone from 1 to 5, I would give it a 10! The book was so good I couldn’t put it down. Julie’s characters just come alive and her descriptions are so visual I can just see it in my mind. This book has treason, deception, battle, dark secrets, nightmares, trust issues and of corse love… in other words, it has it all. Everything that I love in a book. As you can tell, I highly recommend this book!!! So travel back in time to 1360 Scotland with Lena and Alex on a journey like no other.

This is the 6th book in the Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts series. I've been looking forward to Lena's story for a while now and it was handled beautifully. I knew it would need to be handled with care and Julie Johnstone did another amazing job with the story. I became lost in their lives and was sad when the book ended but I was very happy with how the story played out.

Book six in this beautiful love story. Julie does an outstanding job showing that love and patience can conquer even the deepest fears. I normally dont give the book away. I read a review once about not being warned about the subject matter. This story does detail some of the abuse men and women received. It is not a gory book but does have some details that are slightly gory. The truth is no matter how broken someone is.. there is someone who will see you as perfect even though you don’t see yourself that way. I always suggest reading the other books first to get to know the characters in this book! 😉 Enjoy!

Alex and Lena have such troubled pasts. Neither knows if they can ever trust or love. Together though through each other’s love and strength they over come past and present troubles. Wonderfully done story.

This is part of a series (book 6) and I found it pretty easy to follow, so I’d say you could read it happily as a stand alone.

Leana MacLeod has suffered a lot in her young life and it has left her with physical and mental scars, she’s afraid of both marriage and men, and with good reason.
Kidnapped as a child, abused in adulthood, by her husband, Lena wants nothing more than to be left alone and try for a normal life. An impossible task what with brothers and well meaning sisters in law all trying to protect and smother her.

So when the King dictates that she weds she is filled with horror. Until she is made aware of her her new husband is to be, she knows Alex MacLean, so she hopes it will be a better marriage than her first, but who really knows what goes on behind closed doors.

The characters are well developed, Lena begins this book a frightened and defeated woman, but she grows into a strong, and very much determined woman.

Alex was made Laird of his clan at only fifteen years old after the death of his father. He has always done his best to be a fearless leader and a strong warrior that his father would have been proud of.
Alex is seen as a hard warrior but he’s kind and caring, and is willing to lay down his life for those he loves. He is a fierce protector.

However Alex is haunted by violent nightmares of his dark past. And those secrets could destroy the fragile bonds of trust that both Alex and Lena are trying to forge.

The pace of the book is very good, we have intrigue and a few secrets which all add to a good read, I found it hard to put down in places.

The things are getting repetitive in the series.. the hero is sure he is in love with heroine..only when she is attacked.. none of the women have shown real sense as to the danger.. fear for love can make you do stupid things.. but it is similar in almost all of the books..
The author has also forgotten the route and distance between Dunvegan and Duart castle.. in the first book, they travel by horses.. and it's not a fortnight journey as per references in other books too..
When something is to be kept secret..you don't shout and others can hear you out from the closed doors..
among other things.. the heroine wants the hero to share his darkest secrets with her immediately..nobody divulges their demons so easily..she knows they don't yet love each other or trust enough..how can she expect it..
I mean a few things did seem immature for the heroine..
Overall an okay kind of book..when I started the series I was excited.. but as I am heeding ahead..it's getting disappointing..
