Alaa al-Aswany (Arabic: علاء الأسواني), Egyptian Arabic (Masri) "علاء الاسوانى" (born 1957) is an Egyptian writer, and a founding member of the political movement Kefaya.
Trained as a dentist in Egypt and Chicago, it took him 9 years to earn his degree from Chicago National University where he spent 17 years in his life, al-Aswany has contributed numerous articles to Egyptian newspapers on literature, politics, and social issues. His second novel, The Yacoubian Building, an ironic depiction of modern Egyptian society, has been widely read in Egypt and throughout the Middle East. It has been translated into English, Danish, Finnish, French, Norwegian, Greek and Dutch, and was adapted into a film (2006) and a television series (2007) of the same name.
Chicago, a novel set in the city in which the author was educated, was published in January 2007.
Al-Aswany participated in the Blue Metropolis in Montreal, June 2008, and was featured in interviews with the CBC programme "Writers and Company".

Ένα ευχάριστο μυθιστόρημα για την Αίγυπτο της δεκαετίας του '40. Πολλές ιστορίες που μπλέκονται η μία με την άλλη, με πυρήνα την οικογένεια Χαμάμ. Ανθρώπινες ιστορίες συνυπάρχουν με ιστορικά και πολιτικά γεγονότα. Πολύ ωραίος και περιγραφικός ο λόγος του Αλ-Ασουάνι, μας βοηθάει να μπούμε στο κλίμα της εποχής. Γενικότερα μπορούμε να πούμε πως είναι ένα βιβλίο για την κοινωνική ισότητα (ή ανισότητα), τη δικαιοσύνη, την ελευθερία σε μια χώρα με ιδιαίτερο πολιτικό καθεστώς, μα και με ένα πολύ αυστηρό κοινωνικό πλαίσιο, καθώς όλα περιστρέφονται γύρω από τη θρησκεία του Ισλάμ.

Εξαιρετική αναπαράσταση των τελευταίων ετών της αγγλικής κατοχής της Αιγύπτου μέσα από την ιστορία της οικογένειας Χαμάμ και την αντίθεση μεταξύ των Αιγυπτίων που άλλοι αισθάνονταν ειλωτες και άλλοι οργισμένοι και έτοιμοι να απιτιναξουν το ζυγό.

Υπέροχο! Μου θύμισε κάτι από τη "Λέσχη των Αθεράπευτα Αισιόδοξων", ίσως επειδή και τα δύο βιβλία διαδραματίζονται σε λέσχες. Απλή, μεστή αλλά και ιδιαίτερα περιγραφική γραφή, που δεν γίνεται καθόλου κουραστική. Ένα ευκολοδιάβαστο μυθιστόρημα με αρκετα στοιχεία για την καθημερινή ζωή των Αιγύπτιων. Η ανάγνωση κυλάει γρήγορα κι ευχάριστα, ανυπομονείς να γυρίσεις σελίδα για να διαβάσεις τη συνέχεια. Οπωσδήποτε θα αναζητήσω και άλλα βιβλία του συγγραφέα.
