When Lily Parker's guardians decided to send her away to a fancy boarding school in Chicago, Lily was shocked. So was St. Sophia's.
As the new girl at the elite St. Sophia's boarding school, Lily is surrounded by an ultra-rich bratpack. Lily wohnt in Sagamore im Bundesstaat New York. Ihre Eltern sind beide Professoren und als sie eines Tages die Möglichkeit für einen 2jährigen Lehrauftrag in München bekommen, muss Lily umziehen. Allerdings nicht nach München sondern nach Chicago. Ihre Eltern haben beschlossen, dass sie ihren Abschluss in Amerika machen soll und sie an der elitären Privatschule St. Sophia in Chicago untergebracht - einer Schule, wo die meisten Kids aus der reichen und privilegierten Oberschicht stammen. Lily fühlt sich von ihren Eltern verraten und abgeschoben - bis sie ihre neue Mitschülerin Millicent "Scout" Green trifft und die beiden sofort Freundschaft schließen. Scout ist erfrischend direkt und nimmt kein Blatt vor den Mund. Sie wurde von ihren extrem reichen Eltern bereits vor vier Jahren nach St. Sophia abgeschoben und macht Lily mit ihrer neuen Umgebung - und den neuen Mitschülern bekannt. Wie überall gibt es auch auf St. Sophia die In-Clique um die snobistische Veronica und ihre beiden besten Freundinnen Amie und Mary Katherine. Die drei sind sowas wie die Schul-Bullies, die andere drangsalieren und über sie herziehen - so auch über Scout.
Bald schon merkt Lily, dass Scout ein Geheimnis hat. Sie schleicht sich nachts aus dem Zimmer und verschwindet und kommt erst spät nachts wieder. Lilys Neugier ist geweckt und wird durch einen Streich ihrer Mitschüler unfreiwillig gestillt.
Nach und nach bekommt Lily heraus, dass nicht alles so ist wie es scheint, dass es Magie wirklich gibt und dass der alte Kampf Gut gegen Böse auch hier in der Windy City Chicago tobt. Was hat es wirklich mit dem Lehrauftrag ihrer Eltern in München auf sich? Und welches Geheimnis hat der süße Jason mit den unglaublich blauen Augen den Lily so unwiderstehlich findet?
Das Wichtigste zuerst: es ist ein Jugendbuch! Aber hey - das war mal ein toller Auftakt, den Chloe Neill mit Firespell hingelegt hat. Das Ende lässt darauf schließen, dass das erst der Auftakt um Lily und ihre neuen Freunde ist. Hier geht es nicht um Vampire oder Hexen; es geht eher um Kids mit außergewöhnlichen Fähigkeiten wie bei den X-Men. Mehr will ich gar nicht verraten. Mir hat der Schreibstil gut gefallen und ich musste oft laut lachen über die spritzigen und oft sarkastischen Dialoge. Ich mochte vor allem Scout sehr gerne mit ihrer vorlauten Klappe.
