Richard Bandler is the co-founder of neuro linguistic programing. NLP is a technique that uses certain representational systems (the different parts composing a person) and the power of language to change behaviors at will by changing the meaning of the context of these behaviors. The subject of NLP is still of interest to me but this book was not the right place to start. The book is a compilation of transcripts of workshops lead by Bandler some 35 years ago and not easy to understand by people who do not already have a certain knowledge of the so called 6 steps reframing technique.

There was a time when I just had to finish every book I started. Since I realized that there are simply too many books out there to be read in one lifetime I decided to stop wasting my time with books that I didn’t like. So, I did not finish this one. And the voice of Bandler sounded arrogant and manipulative; that was a major turn off for me.

Another early NLP book for therapists. Even though the literal 6-step reframing process as described here is no longer considered elegant or recommended by Bandler, this book is a testament on the flexibility of the human mind and a great source of options for using it.

I can't take Bandler seriously. Every time I read any of this transcript I just imagine him shoving his gun into the hand of his cocaine dealer and using NLP to convince the sleaze to take the fall for the dead hooker in the bedroom.

Grindler's not much better. I imagine him teaching contra's how to interrogate revolutionaries in Latin America in the 1970's. 'if their eyes move up and left, they're lying...' justifying torture?

Couldn't finish this.

Interesting self-help book that guides you into "reframing" any situation - the meaning of any situation depends upon the "frame" in which it is perceived.

For example:
I used to get disgusted - almost angry because I was constantly having to drag the vacuum out due to the profuse shedding of my doggies. This book helped me to be grateful for the hairy mess. Would I rather have my precious girls and hair on the floor or a spotless carpet with no pets and loneliness?

An early work from the co-developers of NLP - Richard Bandler and John Grinder - two geniuses in the field of human behaviour.

To understand mental illness is just a wake-up call to refresh your reality and reframe your life experiences, what a gift.

A powerful book, I read in 1992 and what I learned then I still use in my life today almost 40 years later.

Half of this book is brilliant ...reframing techniques are excellent and accessible and in the first half anyone could apply and understand from the anecdotes. The second half is hard to fathom unless you were in an NLP course doing exercises or working with other Practioners ...getting misbehaving parts of your brain to communicate with each other, alone without guidance - unless you have some incredible talent is somewhat unlikely.

This was one of the best books of NLP in my opinion and the purpose of reframing is a very useful to learn about, for me at least. The book is a collection of transcripts from seminars and includes much participation from the audience. The other NLP book I highly recommend with this is "Using your brain for a change".
