Smashing HTML5 is inconsistent. I would not recommend it as an "introduction" because it often ignores best-practices in its examples and text, and it is not in-depth enough to recommend for greater study.

Two far superior, and in one case free, resources:
Dive into HTML5 by Mark Pilgrim
Introducing HTML5 by Bruce Lawson and Remy Sharp

This book is easy to read. But this book is about HTML and it is intended for Web designers. Though JavaScript is mentioned in this book, this book is not about JavaScript

If you want to have a glimpse of the changes in HTML5 and in other aspects of web programming such as javascript, CSS3, and php, this book is for you.

Otherwise, if you want an in-depth understanding about HTML5 for beginners, try your luck with other books.

This book is ok for someone trying to understand the basics.
But it stays in this entry level. Don't expect to be an html5 expert by reading this book.
