I hated almost all of the characters. I like Ollie, but he was the only one. I have no idea why these 4 girls were ever friends. I mean really they were horrible to each other and kept so many secrets and lied so much I just didn't get it. Georgina was really snobby and better than everyone, treated everyone like crap. Meg seemed fine when it was just her, but when she was around her so called friends she was horrible! Trying to stir up trouble and offend her friends. I didn't get it. Jen was just...well she seems all poor me, but didn't do anything to try and change anything. She just let things happened and then would just go crazy and make things worse for no reason. I really didn't like her. Jen was my least favorite. I knew all of the twists before the happened. It was just...I found the book kind of boring and I didn't get how these people ever interacted and liked each other.
Frankly, I have a hard time imagining these girls were ever friends. They never like each other, all their flashbacks are of them hurting each other, and as adults, they hurt each other. The "love triangle" between Jen, Starkey, and Ollie was played out okay given Jen's past, but that fell flat in the face of the rest of the book. I picked it up because I thought it was a mystery, as in What Happened to Rowan? Instead, it was really The Trials and Tribulations of Jen's Love Life with a little of What Happened to Rowan in the background. I was sorely disappointed and the ending was far too fast for the build up. The flashbacks came out of no where and I hate books where I have to go back several pages because I realize I'm not reading the same scene I started in. For example, there is a scene where Jen is visiting Georgina and talking to her, then she's suddenly talking to her boss/friend Annamarie and telling her what happened and then going back to the talk with Georgina in flashback ALL IN THE SAME CHAPTER! This book gave me a headache.
Admittedly, the only reason I decided to read this book was that two of the main characters are named Jen and Rowan :). It proved to be worth the time. It kept me guessing from the beginning and I was completely surprised by the end. All in all, a great book.
When Good Friends Go Bad is writing duo Ellie Campbell’s (Lorraine Campbell & Pam Burks) second book. Meg, Jen, Georgina and Rowan were inseparable friends until a childhood prank tore them apart.
Ten years later Rowan calls for her friends to meet her for dinner but she doesn’t show up. Not only that but Meg behaves embarrassingly, Georgina’s secret comes out and Jen decides she’s finally had enough.
Twelve more years go by and Meg manages to convince both Jen & Georgina to help find Rowan…
When Good Friends Go Bad was an outstanding book. I absolutely loved the plot and found it quite unique. The best thing for me was the writing, although it was written by two people you would never know the writing was seamless and flowed easily. Not only that but it was incredibly well written and Pam & Lorraine managed to keep all of the plots up in the air with relative ease.
Of the four friends I liked Jennifer best. Most of the chapters were about her and I thought she was a fabulous character. I found Georgina a bit snobby but ultimately I thought she was a genuinely nice person. Even though Meg did a lot of bad things, I found that I also liked her, too. Rowan, while mentioned, is not featured in the book at all until the last quarter of the book and it made her quite a mysterious character. Who was this person the friends were trying to track down and why on Earth did she seem to fall off the radar?
I quite liked Georgina’s husband Aiden until the last quarter of the book, too. I really thought he had changed but when it all came out he was just a rat through and through. Once a cheater, always a cheater! Jennifer’s best friend Helen was a great friend throughout the book even though Jen puts her off about going places and Helen feels her nose is out of joint once Jen gets back into her friendship with Georgina and Meg. I loved Ollie, Jen’s (ex) husband. Meg’s son was rarely mentioned but who his father was was always there in the background. I figured it out just before it was revealed and wasn’t too shocked!
The plot really takes off once the three friends get hold of something solid about Rowan. From then on it’s one huge rollercoaster of a ride which had me rushing to finish the book. I also loved all the means the friends used to try and track Rowan down, going to her old hometown, going to a reunion at their old school, until eventually all of their hard work paid off. Rowan’s story completely shocked me and it took me a few minutes to register exactly who it was that had made Rowan the way she was. That was a really good curveball from Pam & Lorraine! Really came out of nowhere, too.
When Good Friends Go Bad really was a fabulous novel and I wholly recommend you read it. It deals with a lot of things which really does test the friendship of the four and even though it’s almost 500 pages, I found myself flying through the book!
Rating: 5/5
I’d like to thank Random House for sending me a copy to review!
This was inspired by thoughts of our schooldays, of great friends we had back then, of how intense and important those friendships were to shaping the people we became, let alone our wellbeing and happiness in a sometimes tough environment. What happened to those people who vanished from our lives? With social media it’s so easy to track them down those old friends and past lovers - or is it? Is it even a good idea or best to stick with the memories? What if you stir up things best left alone? We actually heard of an 80 year old man at our aunt’s church who left his wife for his first girlfriend after she contacted him through Facebook!!!
We also wanted to write about the complexities of friendship. The small and large betrayals, the difficult choices you sometimes have to make, e.g. between honesty and lies, even those well-intentioned ones meant to avoid causing someone else pain. How deeply can a friend wound you and still be considered a friend? Can you really forgive and forget?
Anyway hope you enjoy When Good Friends Go Bad. We had a lot of fun writing it.

"When Good Friends Go Bad" by Ellie Campbell was a interesting contemporary romance read. This novel really brings back memories of my school days of friend I had back them and even a few today. There is that question: " What happened to those people who vanished from our lives?" "When Good Friends Go Bad" was about four friends, Jennifer (Jen), Georgina, Meg (Nutmeg), and Rowan. These four were the best of 'friends until a childhood prank tore them apart.' Now, ten year later they are now entered back into each others life. It began with a phone call for all to meet for dinner, however someone did not show. Why did this friend not show up? As time go on we find that there will be secrets that will finally come out. This author did a good job with presenting this story to the reader with the three friends life was focus on and then toward the end the mysterious friend shows up. There will be a lots of questions that will be answered like what was up the Georgina's husband Aiden? Was he for real or what? Then there was Jennifer's best friend Helen who really was a good friend and let's not leave out Jennifer's ex...Ollie and their daughter Chloe. Also their was Meg's son Zeb which became important toward the end on her exactly was his father. To get it all you must pick up the excellent read that this author has presented to the readers. Truly, it will be a read of a test of friendship for each of these four friends. The question is will they remain friends after is all comes out. Would I recommend? YES!

I really enjoyed reading this book about 4 friends who for various reasons don't really keep in touch. They were trouble makers in school--but always had each others backs. When Rowen decides to contact all the others for a reunion-but then does not show up herself-the others are worried BUT other problems have to be worked through first. They intermittently try to track Rowen down--but road blocks keep getting in their way. They do ultimately find her-and trouble! I do not want to give away the ending--so I am going to stop right here--If you decide to read this book (I would suggest the book although it does come in e-book format) you will not be disappointed! AND for 3 Days you can get this book fromWhen Good Friends Go Bad
Oh my god such bitches in the world! Friendships started as children change over the years but can last for ever. Who knows you better than your best friend? This is a story of romance, loves won and lost, enduring friendship. It has very funny moments and very sad moments. This book is for friends everywhere!
What a roller coaster! Friendship take on all forms throughout time, they ebb and flow. When Meg gets a hold of Jen and Georgina telling them that Rowan is in trouble a search begins. With twists and turns this novel is adventure of friendship, truth and loves lost and found!!! Not be be missed 4 stars!
A book about friendship. I loved this. With all the secrets and betrayals, I had no clue what would happen or how things would turn out. It could have easily gone a few different ways, though I had my hunches. There were just enough hints and information that I had to keep reading because I wanted to know more. Serious subjects, yet a fun read. An excellent book and one I highly recommend.
Started off quite slow and I didn't love the characters straight away. But the mystery of finding Rowan got me hooked in the end and I quite enjoyed it. Not a favourite but a good holiday book.
I liked it at first, a bit slow to start but hard to keep track of the timeline and when in their lives the story was taking place. The middle stretched out for too long and it wrapped up very quickly. It was just okay
Jen the "tomboy", Georgina the "snob", Meg the "hippy" and Rowan the "shy, kind, naive one" were best friends in school. Then and incident occurred that tore the group apart. As they grew they all went their separate ways.
Many years later Jen gets a call from Meg. Meg says it is a matter of life and death to find Rowan. Reluctantly the three (Georgie, Jen & Meg) decide to do this. As they begin there quest to find their missing friend, old wounds are opened, secrets reveled, feelings gets hurt, resentments build, and some feel betrayed. Will this pull them all together again, or keep them apart forever?
A well written emotional story. I liked Jen, she is going through a divorce it is a rough time in her life. This is something a lot of women can relate to. Georgina is likable as well, although some find her a snob, I felt she was just opinionated. Meg the one you love to hate. She is not afraid to "tell-it-like-it-is" and them some, not worrying about the consequences. And Rowan, she was just so down to earth and likable.
The story was very good, there were so many secrets and "WOW" moments. I liked the whole concept of old friends trying to reunite, that (I believe) does happen in real life. We see them all go through many emotions from happy to sad. Each one is battling their own problems and trying to find their friend.
I highly recommend When Good Friends Go Bad to women (men too) who love a good emotional drama with a dash of romance and humor. A true 5 star read!
All begins in 1980 four teenage girls: Jennifer, Georgina, Rowan and Nutmeg meet each other in school. Almost after first conversation they became good friends, even though they were so different in appearance and in their temperaments. Meg (Nutmeg) was ginger- haired girl with freckles, Rowan has black hair and blue eyes and she was so brave girl, Jen was a quiet, shy girl maybe a lit bit naïve, Georgina was fat girl with olive skin and brown hair. Suddenly a child's prank will end their friendship. After twelve years Rowan organizes their reunion. Everything has been put right: their meeting, their accommodation, but one of them is missing. Rowan didn’t shows up. She was the organizer of the meeting but she did not appear. Where she is? What she up to? What if something bad happen to her? But it is not the only concern… They are not girls anymore. Neither one of them is not the same. Georgina had a secret and it was revealed. Jen start goes back in the past and brings to mind how she spends time with her great love. The reunion is not successful. Then Meg will try to put them together in search of Rowan. Great read I must admit. I was reading this book a long time not because it wasn’t interesting to me but because I wanted to feel all things described in the book. The story is well done and compact although not in one timeline, despite returns in the past. Of the main characters I liked so much Jen, she is so honest and very likeable.
Ellie Campbell brings us into the relationships of four women who were teenage friends and are coming together after twelve years without any communication. She reveals for the reader the struggles, secrets and compassion each has for the others as they have come together as women under uncertain circumstances.
Jennifer, Georgina, Rowan and Nutmeg became friends at school mostly because they were being picked on as new students and formed a strong bond. They were all different in their own ways but melded together as a force to be reckoned with. After a prank that got out of hand they all take different paths in life and go their separate ways.
Twelve years later they are summoned together at the request of Rowan and everyone shows up except Rowan. Being brought together at her request the others begin on a quest to find Rowan and uncover secrets and feelings that must be dealt with on the way.
The characters are brought to life and might remind some of us of relationships we had in school. They all have their own secrets but struggle to find a balance as a group. As I was reading I could feel at times great compassion for them as well as disgust for them.
The writing is powerful as you are privy to the balance it sometimes takes to keep relationships together and working thru the differences. I enjoyed this book and felt as if I was a fly on the wall as these four women come to terms with their lives as well as with each other.
I was intrigued by the idea of a romantic/chick lit type easy read crossed with a mystery and I wasn't disappointed. Most of this book does feel like a normal 'what's happening in these stereotypical women's lives, who's sacrificed family for career, who's love life is or isn't working' chick lit fluffy novel, but the extra element of finding out what's happened to the friend who didn't turn up when she arranged to meet them all makes this book stand out from other stories in the genre.
I would say that it felt slightly disjointed at times, hopping between time periods when characters were remembering things and also between different characters points of view. My other criticism would be the amazingly stereotyped women, and men for that matter, who always do what you think they'll do, because they are that much of a stereotype there aren't many suprises in their actions!
Overall the storyline was fun, and makes up for the slight criticisms above, so a solid 4 stars.
In 1980 England, four eleven-year-old girls Rowan, Jennifer, Meg, and Georgina become friend on the first day of school. A few years later, a prank tears them apart. After twelve years Rowan organizes a reunion, but doesn't attend. The remaining three band together to search for answers. Secrets will be revealed, and perhaps old wounds will finally heal. The title WHEN GOOD FRIENDS GO BAD is a bit of a misnomer. Were these women ever truly "good friends" or even "good" friends? Their relationships seemed more characteristic of friends in a book plot than people who would be friends in real life and that inauthenticity kept me from embracing the characters and the story. I also had trouble getting into the book, because there was a lot of back story rather than plot they grabbed my attention. In the end, the blurb about WHEN GOOD FRIENDS GO BAD oversold the book and the end was anticlimactic.
When Good Friends Go Bad is the story of 4 childhood friends (Jen, Meg, Georgina & Rowan) who grow apart as time goes by, then they are called to a reunion dinner by Rowan who never shows and the dinner is a bust. 10 years later Meg tells them she's got a lump and it's urgent they find Rowan. I liked the book, it started off slow but around 40% in, the pace started to pick up and it kept a good stride. There are some funny parts, some sad parts, some mysteries, and a few surprises. It wasn't great but it was enjoyable. If Goodreads gave half stars, I'd give it a 3.5 but since they don't I'll have to go with 3 - I liked it.
Although I normally don't read British chick lit, I picked this up after reading Looking for La La. I totally enjoyed that book and figured I would love this one too. I did! It is a great story about three friends from school that decide several years later that they want to find another one of their schoolmates - then the adventure begins. It reminds me of some of my own high school friendships and what has become of them, and the book has some real laugh out loud moments. Pick this one up!
Who doesn't wonder about the fates of old friends once the school days are over? Three old friends have found their way back into one another's lives after almost 20 years apart, brought together in a search to find the fourth of their school day circle. This story started slow, but I couldn't put it down in the last quarter of the book.
Slow but the last few chapters were wonderful! My favorite line in the book "Really we are so much more than a number or what we look like or the state of our house or our clothes". If only I could remember this on a daily basis!
I wanted a good mystery with the ups and downs of long standing, close friendships. What I got was the saga of four women reconnecting after twenty years with two mysterious threads.
I guessed all of the reveals by the time I was half way through the book and I wasn't convinced by the connections of these 'good friends'. They were terrible friends with little in common other than how little they trusted each other.
I found the writing to have an odd pace, rushed at times, too slow at other points. It felt disjointed quite often which I put down to the author actually being two people.
For me not to finish a book is virtually unheard of. Two stars for me means I didn't particularly enjoy it but I wanted to know if I was right so I finished the book!
This is holiday chick-lit about gossip and lies. It's a straight to TV afternoon movie on Channel 5. If I'd have gone into it knowing this I'd have enjoyed it more although even as free Kindle download I probably wouldn't have chosen it.
This book will hold your eyes glued to the pages. It offers everything from angels, deceit, mystery, love, and secrets. But with everything how friendships cements relationship and overcomes any obstacles in the way. This is written by an English author, so you must get beyond word spellings and look up or imagine the meaning of some words not familiar to American readers. The slang words were different and sometimes confusing, but always interesting. This accented the difference between the American and English language, making the reading even more pleasurable. I really liked this story and enjoyed every page, and would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good storyline.
Ok THAT is a cheesy title but it's three a.m. Just finished. This had some slang terms I wasn't familiar with, but now I think I'll start using! Many plot twists in this story kept me guessing, which is a good thing too,so I didn't get bored....and it came together so well, all the strands braided into a plait of ...well I won't give any spoilers. The characters had me chuckling....their romantic lives had me extremely sympathetic for the girlfriends....I always know I am in can't-put-it-down-mode by the time I get to 80%,but this one had me unable to stop reading by 70%...hence the late hour.I could only dream of having lifelong friends as these.
When Good Friends Go Bad is a tribute to female friendship. We all have friends ( I hope) who have been there when we needed them for one crisis or another and they make our lives richer. The four main characters met in grade school and just seemed to click. They're all very different but despite their differences have a history they share..
The plot was seamless and flowed well from one character to the next. Each character was well developed with both positive and negative traits. The story has depth that allows the reader to see how circumstances change their lives and allows each character to grow. This is Chick Lit at it's best.
I was hooked by the title. I have read the lower reviews on this book and they have one statement in common; " How were they ever friends in the first place? " New students in new environments often drift together. If the new group comes under physical and/or verbal attack, the bond strengthens. I liked the book. I cringed at bad decisions, shook my head at others. It makes you look back at who you were and then forward to who you are. Is this who we want to be. Is change even possible. I kept hoping that one or all would rise like a Phoenix from the ashes.
I would give this book a 3.8. I don’t think enough of the character development for the four friends was established at the beginning. It doesn’t seem like the four women characters like each other all that much. I do think that the book was tied up well at the end satisfactorily. It does make you think a little bit about the instances that shape your life in regards to relationships. How are your feelings as a teenager shape how you behave as an adult.
