Unable to provide an alibi for the night of the Cotton Drifting, Satoshi becomes the prime suspect for the murder of his aunt! As her friend is hauled away by the police, Shion steps forward as a witness to Satoshi's whereabouts that night, exposing her true identity in the process. Shion may have saved Satoshi this time, but her actions have put her in serious danger. What will the Sonozaki family do to Shion when they learn of her association with Satoshi Hojo? And what will they do to Satoshi?
Ryukishi07 (竜騎士07, Ryūkishi Zero Nana?, born November 19, 1973) is the pen name of a Japanese man originally from Chiba Prefecture who is well-known as the original creator for the idea of the visual novel series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni. So I know this isn't the "answer" arc to the Curse Killing arc but I'm still confused about the Mion/Shion switches. Nothing is really answered here about that but Shion does tell Satoshi that she isn't Mion. I might have to wait until the Massacre arc to see if my theory is right or not.
We continue our look at the ‘Cotton Drifting arc’ from the other side of things and finding the truth turns out to be just as harrowing as the mystery itself. There are tons of revelations and lots of nail-biting tension, though for some people that won’t really be an option...
This series certainly revels in the macabre and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like it. Things start to come to light, finally, but not without some additional wrinkles and complications, of course.
Shion’s position as an outsider who has ties to the Sonozaki family puts her in perfect position to stumble upon hints of what’s been going on in the village. I still see a couple of possible narrative routes here, but we do get some answers and while they may not be the most surprising, they make the most sense.
I think the latter is very important; yes, a mystery where you are blindsided by the conclusion but it fits the facts is a true triumph, but a mystery where it could be a couple of things and clearly one of these is right is no less satisfying. It definitely beats having things come to light that were never hinted at.
Shion remains very complicated - once Satoshi goes missing she kind of loses it and never really recovers, but to be fair, after the incident with her family, featuring some truly grotesque scenes, it’s not hard to see why. The way she sacrifices everything for Satoshi and how that plays out are very rough.
Still, even with Mion trying to make amends in her own way, she’s got her own plans and once she learns a couple of things, woe betide anybody who gets in her way. I also loved the reintroduction of Keiichi and the contrast between himself and Satoshi, especially as it concerns Shino.
A really good volume. It goes a little crazy, but this series always goes a little crazy. And part of me thinks there’s something to that. As we wait for the rest of the shoes to drop, there’s enough here between things that move the narrative forward and new ways of presenting old information.
A solid 3.5 stars, rounded up because I have high hopes.
I tore into this book as soon as it arrived in the mail & I have to say that so far this arc has been pretty good. There's really not much I can say review-wise, so I'll try to keep it simple.
The artwork in this volume keeps up with the standard with the series, which is very high. I absolutely loved how well it showed the tension & frustration that Shion goes through as she begins her inevitable descent into madness. I really love how each volume & arc of the series shows a little something new about everything that's going on & reveals the true culprit's identity little by little.
Since this particular part of the arc hasn't really been covered by the previous ones, people who might complain about the arcs being a little too monotonous will like the change of pace here. There's a few points where the story gets a little jumbled, but I can't help but feel like that's on purpose to deliberately make the reader feel disoriented. Much of the main gist of the story is the confusion that the characters feel, so I can understand where it would be important to draw the readers into that same feeling.
This was a fine volume & I'm looking forward to seeing the next one wrap this particular arc up.
Erhmahgerd. We all know that Shion is going to end up gong completely insane but I really do not want her too. Ugh. That fingernail scene was kind of hard to read. Can't wait to see what happens next.
I was thinking about rating this 4.25 or 4.5 stars, but Shion annoyed me at times, like her being so obsessed with Satoshi even though they barely know each other, she doesn’t even know if he sees her in that way or just as a friend. I don't understand why people ship these two, before reading this arc, from what I had heard, it seemed like they had more interactions and known each other longer than they actually did. Also,if Shion didn't like Keiichi, then why keep getting close to him, I know that when Mion is around, it's to tease her, but when she's not, it doesn’t make sense. She's also so obsessed with Satoshi that she ends up being so wrong about him being insensitive since we know how much he cares about his friends, and she clearly doesn't get it. What's wrong with a guy who likes to joke around? I understand that she's behaving the way she is because of how she was treated by her family and the insanity and Satoshi was just nice to her (although I don't really see anything special about him except that he really cares about his sister).
Anyways, other than that, I liked everything else. I really liked the atmosphere in this one, it definitely felt creepy. I'm going to see if they made these arcs into anime episodes and will watch them immediately because I feel like it will really immerse me into the story like with the question arcs. There's only so much words and pictures can do.
Here we see the scary transformation of Shion from seemingly innocent to vengeful spirit! I actually laughed out loud uncontrollably at the last panel! More questions about the detective's true identity. Quite gripping. Oyashiro likes this volume.
La inestabilidad se hace presente, en este manga, cuando ocurre lo inesperado. Parece ser que Oyashiro-Sama se hace cada vez más presente en este misterio que aún está sin resolver.
Probably one of my favourite arcs yet. The Sonozaki twins are such intriguing characters. Glad to see more of Shion’s cruel side. The restitution chapter made my skin crawl. 5/5 ☆ stars
