This series keeps getting better with each book. I liked "Everafter" and really liked "Nevermore," but "nightrise" has me drooling for more. Alexa really blooms in this book, so much that you can almost see her panther's tail swishing when the character is irritated. The short version of the plot is that Alexa must save Valentine's soul and the two of them must save the fragile alliance between weres and vampires to keep world order. The story is well told. I love how the first-person narration switches back and forth between the two main characters. But hold on to your seat, this tale includes a clever surprise that will have you both gnashing your fangs and thirsting for the next installment.

With the completion of this book here, I’ve now read more books by Nell Stark and Trinity Tam than I’ve read by just Nell Stark. 3 to 2. Not a significant statistic, just something I noted to myself as I was reading.

This book is difficult to actually say anything about without going into spoiler territory. Literally, first thing that happens in the book is a series spoiler. Not specifically a book spoiler, but a series spoiler. So how to write a review that says something while getting around that issue? Note before I continue, a book can ‘spoil’ itself by having a flash forward to open the book, like say flashing forward 3 years, then the rest of the book is set three years before. That did not happen in this instance. I’m not a big fan of flash forwarding.

Val and Alexa return for their third book. The alternating POV continues. Keeping up past tendencies, the book followed a process of focusing on one character for a longish period of time before switching at, roughly, the 49% mark (I might just be remembering when it switched in the prior book, it might have switched earlier this time). And like the previous book, part of the ‘switch’ involved action that took place before where the action ended before the switch. In other words, POV-A followed the storyline time line from point in time A to point in time E before the switch; POV-B followed C until some point after point in time E. Unlike last time, I did not and do not know how much time ‘had to be made up’ before we got back to ‘current’ time.

The action of the book takes place in New York and Argentina. It involves, as noted, Val and Alexa. Also involves Olivia. A new character appears in the form of Solana Carrizo. And the fight with Brenner continues.

And that’s basically what I can say without going into spoiler zone.

Overall I rather liked this addition to the series. A satisfying book. I liked it so much that I diverted from my normal pattern, at least with this series, and dove into the next book immediately.

DO NOT READ SPOILER section unless read the prior books in the series.

"Nightrise," by Nell Stark & Trinity Tam, is the third installment of their, thus far, four book everafter series. I have enjoyed this series thus far. However, I struggled a bit with this book. Typically, in this series, either Valentine or Alexa is saving one or the other from some heinous struggle against another. Although both have shown such deep love and commitment for each other, and heroism toward their species, it all seemed predictable.

Here are my thoughts.

Throughout this book, "Nightrise," I found myself constantly questioning Olivia’s motives. Why was she always hanging around Alexa? Now, that I've gotten through the book, I have an inkling of an idea, but I still think she's going to play dirty. Through Alexa, Olivia learns a lot about the preternatural world.

I found it interesting that Alexa kept her research on the down low and that no other preternatural higher ups like Malcolm or Helen, caught wind of her endeavors. Only Karma & Olivia were her main contacts. The previous books always ended up in Helen's office or something of that nature.

This book seemed to take a long time to get to the real action. Alexa and her friends had quite a bit of prep work that took place before actually saving Val. But, there was hardly any confrontation between Alexa & Val. There was one brief encounter between before the research began, but that was only Alexa spotting Val in a bar. Yes, I get that there was some falling out in the previous book and the point in this book was to bring them back together. I would love to have had more buildup of emotion, perhaps more angst. Perhaps it even needed a bit more sex spread throughout the book.

Although, I loved that Alexa was able to save Val, I didn't care how she underhandedly did it. Do I think if she were open about it that it might have made a difference? I believe so. I believe that the two love each other deeply, no matter what looms over them. Moreover, with that love and commitment, I think that Val may have come to understand and given the choice, would have taken it. Nevertheless, that isn’t how it was written.

In my opinion, I think the book ended poorly. The ending is a huge cliffhanger! However, I’m sure it will segue well into the next book, “Sunfall.”

Now that I’ve stated what I didn’t like, let me say that overall, I did like the book! I love that Alexa and Val are so strongly in love and committed to each other. Both women characters are very strong willed. In this book, we really see how much Alexa is committed to her mate. Her commitment made a long time ago, when we see her change her whole life to save Val. That’s dedication.

Overall, this whole series is intriguing and fun to read. However, this book seemed a little thin. I would have loved more of Val and Alexa together!

For me, this book is the best one of the series.

Romance was becoming dire in previous books, this introduced a fresh start.

Their relationship had so much going on, there was break up, a love triangle, marriage and so on.

I don't think I like Valentine story arc, that had gone down so drastically, it started of her proposing to Alexa to this trying to play badass but it just doesn't work.
Alexa had carried their relationship and this series on her shoulders

These sequels are good with mystery and action but lacking in depicting a good romance, almost monotone.

This book was difficult to read in the beginning. There was huge changes to the characters. It got better and suspenseful as the book went on. I can't wait for the next episode, GRR I hate cliffhangers.

There are gaps in this book such as the sudden deterioration of Val between the last book and this one. Additionally, how did Val get so militant...hot yes but readers have no clue what accelerated such.
In all, i feel every book keeps getting better. Once again action packed and awesome cliffhanger.

Sad to see the end of this series. Three well written book, but it feels as though this series has stopped before the end. So many in answered questions regarding many issues the couple faced.

This is my third book from Nell Stark and the third in the series Everafter.

As with the second book,
I was a bit frustrated by the time jump in the beginning. I wish there had been a more seamless transition to the third book either from the end of the second or the beginning of this one. I thought the storyline was a bit hard to follow because you are just thrust into the plot. It was a bit of a let down after the praise for the first.

I was also perplexed with the conflict and resolution the couple goes through particularly in this book. Felt a bit forced and unnatural. I think it’s an okay book overall.
➢Happy reading!

The main conflict of the story (the main couple breaking up) happens off page via time skip.

In my opinion the weakest part in the trilogy. But still a good and enjoyable read!

I loved that this book gave more time and focus on Alexa. She definitely drove this story, which was an excellent read. I can't wait to read the next one!
