Actress Marcail Beauchamp has been blackmailed to bring a box to the blackmailer. To do so she had to steal it from her lost love William Hurst, a seafarer. To late she realize her mistake and the two sets off on a mission to retrieve the box and at the same time they can not deny their love from each other. Thought this was an very entertaining book that didn't just relay on the romance itself but had an very intriguing plot as well.
Scandal in Scotlandimmediately follows the first book, One Night in Scotland, but I don’t think it’s imperative you read the first book. The basic premise of the series, is that Egyptologist and explorer Michael Hurst has been taken hostage until his family turns over a certain artifact. In the first book, Mary Hurst retrieved the artifact, and in this second book, we see his brother William Hurst taking on the mission of getting the artifact to Egypt.
Michael Hurst captains his own ship, so it makes sense that he take the box to Egypt. Unfortunately within the first few pages it is stolen from him…by his ex-lover! Marcail Beauchamp is a beautiful and legendary actress. She was the love of his life, until she told him she didn’t love him and that she’d found a new man to make her his mistress-a titled man who could offer her protection. Michael is constantly reminding himself that whatever emotion he sees in her is false, she's an actress after all.
You can get a feel for the book from this small passage:
"I sense some trickery here. I know you, Marcail Beauchamp, and you cannot be trusted." "You don't know me. You never did." She spoke with such quiet dignity that he was almost taken aback."
Now, not only is Michael furious when he realizes what exactly Marcail stole from him, but he's irritated that he still feels something for her. Going after her is a given, but he has to find her first, and since she , she has a head start.
He catches up with Marcail rather quickly, though, and the two of them have to fight their attraction, try not to discuss the past, and find out who is behind his brother's imprisonment. But there is so much more going on, see, Marcail stole the box because she is being blackmailed, so she needs the box as well. So what can the two of them do when they each need the same artifact?
Watching Michael realize how wrong he'd been about Marcail was great, and I'm glad he figured a lot out on his own, too. I liked watching him see how wonderful she really was. Very sweet. When he realized what she went through to not only become an actress, but what she went through all the time as an actress, his comment to her was "I should have been there." *awww*
I enjoyed watching the side characters too. There is a woman involved who has super cool ninja skills at eluding capture, and when you find out who she is? Wow, you would never have guessed it in a million years! I canNOT wait to see more of her!
One thing that drove me nuts about this book, though, is that before every chapter we see a letter from someone in the family to another family member. It was like that in One Night in Scotland as well.
Final verdict? Really enjoyed this book, and I'm enjoying the series. I can't wait to read the next book in the Hurst Amulet series.
This is my first book by Karen Hawkins and it sure wont be my last because I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the surprises in the story and the connection between the hero and heroine. I really liked both William and Marcail. They have been lovers before, she spilt from him years ago, and she now is a mistress to another man even though she still loves William. I am not going into this complications here you‘ll have to read to find out. My biggest reason for liking this book so much was because of William I loved how that he could see past mistakes to be able to forgive. Some writers would have dragged this story out and kept great tension between them, but not this author, she had them working together and finding out more of each other. I am use to reading the heat from paranormal romance and I sometimes find the heat in historical very mild, but this was pretty heated. Yep, William and Marcail waste no time getting it on in a riding down the road in a carriage *fanning self*. I liked this one so much I have to get the first book and on to book three.
Scandal in Scotland was another wonderfully witty and action filled novel by Karen Hawkins. Having read all of the Hurst Amulet series as well as the series that preceded it, I was looking forward to William’s story. The overall plotline that has been continuing through this series is intriguing and leaves me wondering just what will happen to Michael and how everything will end.
The next book in the story will, I assume, be about their brother Robert and the pretty redheaded spy we meet in this novel. I can’t wait to find out more about Robert and his true profession, though I have my suspicions already. It will be interesting to see if Robert catches her in time and is able to keep her this time. After that, we should finally learn what happens with Michael and the artifacts in Egypt. I can’t help but ask myself one question though—will the map lead the Hurst Family to their famed amulet or not?
Scandal in Scotland was a wonderfully romantic and thrilling adventure that I was unable to put down!
This is my first Karen Hawkins read and it will not be my last! I didn’t read the first novel in this series, One Night in Scotland, and I don’t feel that I missed anything to hinder my enjoyment of this story. Scandal in Scotland was a great stand-alone. From what I understand, one of the Hurst siblings has been taken hostage in Egypt and the rest of the family must retrieve an artifact to free him. Mary Hurst was able to attain it from the Earl of Erroll, who she is now engaged to (One Night in Scotland) and now Captain William Hurst is in possession of it and is about to sail to Egypt to rescue his brother…
Boarding his ship the Agile Witch, Captain William Hurst is on a mission to rescue his brother, Michael, from kidnappers in Egypt. He must safely transport an ancient artifact, the Hurst Amulet, and trade it for Michael’s life, but when he gets to his cabin to lock away the amulet he realizes he is not alone. The woman that held and then shattered his heart years ago is in his cabin and after drugging him, steals the amulet for herself and disappears. But William is determined and with his brother’s life at stake tracks her down to a small village where he learns that all is not what it seems with the beautiful actress Marcail Beauchamp, and maybe it never was…
I was captivated by the main characters William and Marcail and loved watching them grow and mature in their views of past hurts and finally finding forgiveness. They both realized that while yes, they were in love, they were too young and not ready for the intense feelings that they shared for one another. It was a journey of discovery for them and the righting of many misconceptions. The romance in Scandal in Scotland was heartwarming and the sex sizzling; and I would just like to note that I was wishing for my very own coach and six while reading a certain scene. *wink* The plot was charming and witty with action, adventure, intrigue and blackmail with endearing characters all around, including the side characters. Which I am on a search for now to find out their stories, Karen Hawkin’s book list here I come!
The reason I am rating this as a four instead of a five is because the ending felt abrupt to me, I read it and thought ‘What, that’s it? It’s the end already? That was quick.’ It was boom, boom action and then ‘The End.’ But maybe that was because I was enjoying the story so much it went by so quickly and I didn’t want it to end. *shrugs* Great read regardless and I will definitely be going back to read the first book in the Hurst Amulet series and any new installments Hawkins writes.
Hilarious scene with two batty old ladies and Marcail: “The only profession where breasts would be an asset would be if one were forced to carry something of weight upon one’s back. Then one’s breasts might act as counterweights.” And then it goes on, ending with, “ For a woman to be truly liberated, she has to be free of her breasts.” LoL
A lovely, witty, easy read with a mature romance and interesting plot. It is very much entwined with other Hawkins books requiring the reader to engage with the entire World but I happen to like that. It makes me feel included.
I was craving a historical romance read, so I decided to pick SCANDAL IN SCOTLAND by Karen Hawkins for my possibly only adult read during my I Heart Simon and Schuster Month Read-a-thon. I have not read any of her books prior to this book. While SCANDAL IN SCOTLAND is not quite a new favorite, I would be very interested in reading more of Hawkins's books.
I guess what I didn't get about the book is the big deal that they were making out of this gold and onyx box. Was this explained in the first book? I understand that William needs it to use to bargain his brother back, but who exactly wants it and what's the fuss with the map? Treasure, ok but it better be a really big one.
As for the characters, William didn't really stand out to me in any way. He's still hurt that Marcail left him all those years ago with a petty explanation that he will never be rich or powerful enough in the social standing for her. He's angry and resentful, but he can't deny that there's still attraction between the two of them. He lacked that extra oomph for me for a reason I can't explain.
But I have to give Karen Hawkins some props, because SCANDAL IN SCOTLAND was one steamy read! She can really write a good scene which is one of the reasons why I would definitely pick up the next book.
To be honest, while Marcail and William had chemistry, the overall story did not appeal to me. I am looking forward to the other books in the series, and I might even read the first one. Robert and the elusive redhead sounds like a fun read, while Michael and his assistant also sounds more like my cup of tea.
Overall, SCANDAL IN SCOTLAND was an okay historical romance novel, but it did introduce me to a new writer that I will keep my eye out for.
It took quite a while to finish this book. I think I was stuck on the 1st novel that; I was afraid to immerse myself into this novel. First, let me say this; I think Karen Hawkins is a very talented writer. I think that she has a great grasp for story telling and creating a vivid account for historical romances. With that complement, just couldn't get into the story. It was better than the first "One Night in Scotland" it still didn't grip me. The main characters were ok and their romance was pleasant. I wanted to read the 1st in the Amulet series; but I think I would appreciated this book as a stand alone. It really wasn't necessary. I think I hampered my own enjoyment of this book by comparing it to the first one. You had a sense of the earlier characters from the letters that were present in book. There was one letter that I liked in the book that I thought was very prolific and profound: Pg. 135 : A letter from William Hurst to his brother Robert, written from the deck of his first ship. I named my ship the Agile Witch. She's a wonder. She's swift and cuts the water like a cutlass. I wonder now why I hesitated so long to purchase her. It's odd how often we face a change in our life that can yield benefits, and yet we fight that change as if it carried poison and not opportunity. That letter alone was worth the read.
What a cute book! I love second-chances plots and even more when there is a good valid reason for the breaking up, and let's be honest, they had it. They definitely had it. I just thought it was so cute!
And I'm totally going to start te next like right now cause omfg Robert!
On a side note: Emma and Jane! Sheep tonic! Honestly to god I didn't remember til they talked about the seep tonic lol And they talked about Luc and Arabella and oh god how I wished to see them again too
I picked this up not knowing it was the second book of this series. I didn't feel as though I missed anything by reading out of order. This was my first book by Karen Hawkins and I am very taken with her writing.
It was a very compelling story. Filled with adventure, suspense, explosions, chases, humor and romance. I will definitely be reading the others in this series. It was a pretty quick read but very well written.
Scandal in Scotland, Karen Hawkins’ second installment in the Hurst Amulet series, is a fast-paced adventure that begins where the previous book, One Night in Scotland, ended. This story follows Captain William Hurst, merchant sea captain, and Marcail Beauchamp, an acclaimed actress. The two estranged lovers are thrust together after years apart when Marcail is blackmailed into stealing an artifact from William, who needs it to ensure his brother’s release from imprisonment in Egypt. William pursues Marcail and the artifact is lost, and together they must race across England and Scotland to get it back.
Hawkins competently weaves a story of young love lost and regained, illuminating the difference maturity can make on opinions and emotions. Hawkins has a masterful control of dialogue, making every interaction feel organic and authentic.
The driving force in this series, the search for Hurst amulet and the mysterious onyx box that is somehow connected to it, is only lightly touched upon in this book. This is understandable given the occupations and natures of the protagonists, but beyond a brief revelation that plot was not much furthered. Hopefully that will be remedied in the final two installments of the series.
Scandal in Scotland is the highly entertaining second book in the Hurst Amulet series by Karen Hawkins. I was swept away in William and Marcail’s journey as they pursued a stolen artifact and took a second look at why their previous romance had failed. This is an excellent second chance love story.
Marcail is an extremely talented and popular actress who knows what she wants and has made tremendous sacrifices for her family. Afraid the price of love would be too high, Marcail sent William away eight years ago giving him the impression his lack of fortune made her choose another. Guarding secrets has become her way of life and when a blackmailer threatens her family, Marcail has no choice but to give into his demands. Forced to face William, she hopes for the best but prepares to take it from him if she must. Failure is not an option.
William has come a long way from the man he was eight years ago. Now a successful and rich sea captain, he still hurts from Marcail’s rejection. Finding her on his boat, he’s both aroused and angry. When she requests he hand over the box which is supposed to secure his brother’s release from a ruthless abductor, William refuses and soon finds himself drugged, unable to move and relieved of his treasure. Catching up to her and re-taking the box is his only choice.
I did have fun with this historical romance. William is another of the Hurst brothers and the amulet is finally safely in William's hands ready to be sent back to Egypt to free their brother (the story starts in the first novel and is best to read it first). He meets an old flame who broke his heart and she steals the amulet to satisfy a blackmailer. We soon find that Marcail is not the brazen horrible beauty she seems to be, but also someone who is desperately trying to save her family from ruin and left William for the same reasons. The box is stolen before the truth comes out, but William is still willing to find out who her blackmailer is as well as gaining the stolen item back.
Of course I'm not going to spoil how these turns of event play out *evil laugh* but I will say that the Hurst amulet itself has yet to reveal all it's secrets. And while I did like Marcail in the end, I still can't say I fully identified with her either. I did enjoy William's part and wouldn't mind adding a handsome captain like him to my man harem. *sigh*
I give this book 3 1/2 stars. I would suggest reading the first book first *gasp* so you can get the total grasp of what the amulet means. The next book involves the brother, Robert, and I think that one is going to be a wild ride. Especially when it seems his intended is a thief and con artist.
Marcail, a famous actress, is being blackmailed to retrieve an ancient onyx box from William Hurst. A man she once loved but had to abandon thinking there was no future for them. But when she tricks him and gets the box and finds out the real reason why William needs it she goes with him to help find the box. When Williams gets tricked by the one woman who broke his heart, he is more than furious so he is determined to go and find that woman and get his box back, only things never goes as he plans, and he ends up having to take her with him in search of the box, but the passion that once was bright has returned and they both having to work together start to reawaken the love they once had... Scandal In Scotland is the second installment in the series and even though there were many moments that I immersed myself in, it was probably my least favorite so far. There were many elements to the book that I really enjoyed. I loved the interaction between the two main characters, the plot was full of excitement and ups and down that can make your head spin. The one thing I would wish was different was the flow, it was uneven and I just felt like it could have been a bit smoother and then it would have been perfect. Overall it was a delicious treat to be savored!!!
This one was a lot of fun. More of a romp than anything super angsty but that's always OK with me. William and Mercail reunite (unwillingly at first) to recover the amulet the series is named for. I wasn't sure I would like Mercail at first. The first few chapters are William's POV and she doesn't come off so well. But once I was introduced to her story and her reasons I started to like them both. I also really enjoyed the fact that their past issues weren't drawn out over the course of the book and inflamed with big misunderstandings. They were each wary of the other but as they realized that they had grown they talked about their past and what had happened between them. Granted William had to work a bit to get it out of Mercail but once she realized what she had given up, she came around. My only complaint is that I had a "kindle surprise" where the book ends at 90% and the rest is excerpts. So it seemed a bit abrupt to me, but it may not have if I had read the paperback and could see realistically where it ended. Looking forward to more in this series and going back to the MacLean curse as well.
I've read and enjoyed Karen Hawkins's previous MacLean series books, as well as the earlier Amhurst novels. I didn't quite like this book as much as I had liked the earlier books. I didn't quite connect with William and Marcail.
I do love the theme of lovers re-uniting, but it was hard to be excited about this pair, especially since they were the cause of their initial separation. What I did like, and which may have been part of my disconnection was the glimpses of couples from previous books and the sneak peeks into the upcoming books. And there wasn't much scandal as is implied in the title.
While I always enjoy Karen Hawkins's books, this one just didn't resonate with me. I do hope Robert's book will impress me. I'm looking forward to it!
This was another delightfully fun and adventurous read in this series. I think I enjoyed this, book 2, a little more than the first, both are fun light reads. It’s on to book 3 now for sure! I am enjoying this series so much I ordered a couple more of her books from two other series. One is loosely tied to this series as well.
FUNNY! I loved this book, course I seem to love all of Karen's. The two old lady sisters, Emma and Jane, are hilarious and do indeed need their own book.

Marcail is such an unusual name, I googled it: "Marcail is Scottish given name. Marcail is a name that's been used by parents who are considering boy baby names." (Pronounced mar - cai (l), ma -rca- il) A very amusing and predictable romp. Obvious from almost the beginning that William and Marcail would be reunited, so that's not really a spoiler. After the blackmailer's henchperson sets William's ship afire, William and Marcail tear off after her, across England into Scotland -- they must get the artifact back! Blinding rain, Scottish inns, huge brawls ensue -- will they recover the onyx box?
Not very enjoyable as a standalone story. 2.5 Stars
The main romance was simplistic but had HEA. But had too many dangling lead ins to romances and mysteries of other stories that were left hanging. As for the mystery of this heroine's blackmailer, he was identified but disappears. No complete resolution. The bigger mysteries that were introduced were not resolved in this book - the onyx artifacts; a brother that was kidnapped overseas; another brother's chase after an elusive blackmail accomplice/ thief (who, he admits in this book, he was tricked into marrying). Overall, filled with secondary cliffhangers. Not a satisfactory standalone book.
Excellent quote: "Our parents serve one of two purposes in our lives: either they are examples for us to strive toward, or warnings of what we should strive against."

William needs to hand over an artifact in order to save his brother’s life, and once he has the precious artifact in hand, a woman from his past comes back to steal it and make is life miserable. But Marcail doesn’t realize how horrible William’s situation really is, and she is thinking only about her family and the blackmailer who is demanding to get his hands on the same box.
When someone steals the artifact from both Marcail and William, they are forced to join forces together to hunt the thief down. But as they travel across Britain and into Scotland, their history becomes their present, and they just might want it to be their future as well.
For some reason I am very picky about my historical romance books, and while I didn’t NOT like this book, it wasn’t one of my favorites either. As much as I wish I could get on board with the pirate/sea captain thing, it just doesn’t really do it for me.
It took awhile for me to really get involved with the characters. In the beginning, William seemed like a selfish ass who wasn’t willing to move forward from his past. He held onto his grudges and didn’t seem able to put anything in the past where it belonged; the past. Likewise, Marcail came across as spoiled and someone who had no care in the world for anyone who wasn’t her family. While she was willing to do anything for them, she wasn’t willing to take anyone else into consideration.
I enjoyed the secondary characters of William’s family. His sisters were funny, his captive brother’s letters were telling, and his other brother Robert’s predicament was a great set-up for what should be a great story. Plus, the two old ladies from the Inn cracked me up like no other. They were fun and hilarious.
The romance between William and Marcail was odd at times. They loved and hated each other all at the same time, and were a little too childish to put aside everything and admit their feelings and move forward with the life they both wanted. There were times I wanted to throttle them both. But once they got their stuff together, I enjoyed them together. They complimented each other, their lifestyles complimented each other and I loved that.
The mystery with the box being stolen and what exactly is going on with the artifact was at times slow moving, and at other times a little confusing. Once Marcail and William caught their thief, the scene that revealed a lot of information was at times jumbled. It was frustrating to read and try to navigate through, as things were shifting and changing without much explanation. I can only hope that it was just a snafu with the egalley.
All in all, I found myself enjoying my first ever Hawkins read, despite some slow moving parts and for me, a lack-luster romance. Despite the seriously flawed characters, they were likeable in the end. For me though, the secondary characters were almost more enjoyable than the main hero and heroine, and set up the ongoing series. I hope to see more from these characters and find out the details of the artifact and why it is so important to so many people.
Renowned actress Marcail Beauchamp possesses many secrets, not the least of which is her love for William Hurst, the man whose heart she broke many years ago. Now Marcail needs something of William’s: an onyx box that she will deliver to a mysterious blackmailer. Seeing William breaks Marcail’s heart all over again, but she manages to steal the box from him, only to discover that he needs the artifact to save his youngest brother. Knowing she might well have endangered the life of someone William holds dear, Marcail joins William on a quest to recover the box. Years apart have done nothing to diminish the desire that burns bright and hot between her and William, but passion isn’t love or trust, two things Marcail fears she’ll never get from William again. Is the specter of their past too powerful a presence for Marcail to be able to claim William’s heart once more?
Scandal in Scotland will sweep you away on an incredible adventure filled with passion, intrigue, and romance. Scandal in Scotland sparkles with life and crackles with the heat between Marcail and William.
Marcail is not your ordinary nineteenth century English miss. She’s an actress, and a talented one at that, one who loves her profession and has had to make sacrifices to keep herself safe while working. She’s made mistakes and keeps secrets, but those flaws add to her character rather than detract from it. William has been hurt by Marcail and he, in turn, has made mistakes when it comes to the person that he loves, but what endeared him to me was his willingness to move past his hurt and truly listen to Marcail. William and Marcail’s complete devotion to their families also won me over. The two may not be a perfect match in the eyes of society, but for readers, there’s no better pairing than these two.
Scandal in Scotland is the second book in Karen Hawkins’s delightful Hurst Amulet series, but Ms. Hawkins weaves in the necessary information that will enable readers new to the series to follow along with ease. Ms. Hawkins continues to intrigue with mystery of the Hurst Amulet, but it’s the Hurst siblings themselves that make me eager to read the rest of the series. Scandal in Scotland contains wicked teases regarding who Robert and Michael’s heroines will be, and if those tidbits are any indication, the sparks are going to fly in upcoming books.
Scandal in Scotland is just the kind of fun, entertaining story I’ve come to expect from Ms. Hawkins. I read Scandal in Scotland in one sitting, not able to put Marcail and William’s story down until I finished it. I adored Scandal in Scotland and I cannot wait to read the next Hurst Amulet book!
