Six Sheep Sip Thick Shakes has enough tongue twisters to challenge kids and adults. This is not a story in the usual sense. The only connection between the pages is the ability to tie your tongue into knots. The illustrations playfully express the words on the page, but will not help you read them aloud. These are truly trying twisters for your tongue. Kids will enjoy the entertainingly silly sentences that will have them “giggling, groaning and guffawing” as they (try to) read each aloud.
This unusual book is bound to break up a boring afternoon, add laughter to your day, and have you and your child writing your own tongue twisters after reading Mr. Cleary’s instructions, at the end of the book. If six sheep sipping thick shakes does not trip you up, just wait, there might be “two-ton trains transporting twelve three-toed turtles twist trickily on the twin tracks” waiting to trip your tongue and tie it into knots.

I asked for a copy of this book through NetGalley, in the hopes that it would effectively hold the attention of my boys. Tongue twister books are excellent tools for little ones in speech classes or any children learning to clearly pronounce words. The tongue twisters in this book felt a little simple at first but I now feel they are perfect for my boys, who are in a younger age group. I recommend this book for parents and teachers interested in focusing on speech and language devleopement. The illustrations were especially brilliant and extremely effective at holding the attention of my kids.
Brian Cleary brought us delightful series of books about parts of speech, and now has put out a book of tounge twisters designed for those just beginning to read. They are not too tricky, but work for younger folks still mastering reading. I especially liked the instructions on how to make a tounge twister, I wish there had been more on that. I think it would emphasize the ways the sound works. The illustrations are bright and cheerful. A good choice for libraries looking for updated riddle books for early readers. From NetGalley
Who doesn't love tongue twisters? This book is filled with clever ones and some that are quite unexpected as Cleary plays with language in his usual delightful way. Although the artwork is interesting as well, one of the attractions of this picture book is how the author offers suggestions for how to create your own tongue twisters. Here's hoping that this book will inspire a few more tongues to get tangled as readers try to wrap their mouths around phrases that are almost impossible to pronounce together. This book is tons of fun!
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books at the library and try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Maybe not so great as a bedtime book but I did have fun trying to say the twisters fast and I think that older kids would have fun attempting to say them as fast as they can!
I never read this book and when I seen the cover of it I was thought to myself, well this should be interesting. It goes through different seasons and events and talks in a way like it says under the title, a bunch of tongue twisters for sure! I laughed throughout this book, I enjoyed it and I'm sure any child will too!
Six Sheep Sip Thick Shakes sticks to your thick tongue.
If you can say “Six Sheep Sip Thick Shakes” six times, you should have no problem reading this book…maybe. Then again, what fun would it be reading a book of tongue twisters without tripping over the words? And there are plenty of them in this book, some more twisty than others, but all of them unique.
Read this to a crochet student while on a repetitive part of her project.
Fun illustrations. Some of these are really long, and some are not that tough to say. But some are excellent! I also like that the end has tips on how to make your own tongue twisters.
Kids will love all of these tongue twisters with bright and fun illustrations. This would also be a great book to share with a classroom during a poetry/tongue twister lesson. Fun!
Title: Six Sheep Sip Thick Shakes: and other tricky tongue twisters by Brian P. Cleary illustrated by Steve Mack Summary: A cheerful twist on tongue twisters. Age: 6-8 years Rating: Yes Pros: As promised, this book features new and tricky tongue twisters. My favorite twister is: “Sasha shifted as she sifted through the thistle for her sisters whistle”. The illustrations are delightfully bold and feature diverse characters. The back of the book features a tutorial on how to make tongue twisters. This is an excellent feature for teachers looking to use the book for a lesson on tongue twisters. Cons: Many of the twisters are quite difficult and a bit too long. I struggled with a few and likewise some children might be discouraged by the difficult. (However, a clever educator could easily modify or shorten some of the twisters to offer a greater range of difficult for students.) The book is not a story but rather a series of different tongue twisters that have been illustrated and packaged in picture book form. Usage: The book would work best in a classroom setting, particularly as the opener to a lesson on tongue twisters.
This is a fun book of tongue twisters. Reading them aloud is a challenge, but trying to say them three times fast is hilarious. The illustrations are colorful and cartoonish and quite nicely depict the funny sayings. We had fun reading them together and taking turns slipping up on the alliterative phrases. We also liked the explanation in the back that describes how to make tongue twisters and which combinations that work particularly well. Overall, this is a silly, but entertaining book.
I love this collection of tongue twisters! It will be both fun and challenging for emerging readers, but the whimsical illustrations make it fun to read to younger children too. The combinations of sayings and pictures are just silly enough to keep tongue twisters from being a boring collection of words, but not so far out that they don't make any sense. "Six Sheep" is a little slice of Dr. Suess!
Brian Cleary creates another great book celebrating language. This time it's silly tongue twisters. Includes information about the construction of tongue twisters and why they're difficult to pronounce. Best read out loud!
Presenting readers with twenty-four challenging and hilarious tongue twisters, Cleary's inventive sentences and Steve Mack's appealing art will leave readers tongue-tied and laughing through their teeth.
