There's something to be said for using a cake mix as a base for a dessert. In some instances, it halves the time needed to make the treat, and it certainly eliminates the step of sifting and combining dry ingredients. This is one of those "semi-home-made" cookbooks that are wildly popular. But frankly, none of these recipes knocked my socks off. There was nothing wrong with them, but there wasn't a single instance where I told myself, "I've GOT to try this." Instead, I thought the "Easy Ice Cream Sandwiches Recipe" to be ridiculous.
The people who selected these recipes never met a form of sugar they didn't like. Here is a random example: Peach Berry Cobbler. The recipe calls for a cake mix, a 21 oz. can of (sweet) peach pie filling, a can of whole-berry (sweet) cranberry sauce, plus vanilla ice cream and or frozen whipped cream topping. Of course, there is no nutritional info offered; I can't decide if I'm more likely to expire from a heart attack or diabetes (after making and eating this recipe). They are all heavy on sugar and oil. They don't even suggest using applesauce to reduce some of the oil in any recipe, to lower the calorie count.
Almost 40 years ago, Gooseberry Patch was born to two Ohio homemakers -- over their back fence. Gooseberry Patch's brand offers homestyle cooking hints, decorating ideas, and many cookbooks. I learned from reading this book that I need to read any future Gooseberry Patch cookbooks carefully before purchasing.

The Cake Mixes Cookbook, by Gooseberry Patch has simple easy recipes to make treats for the family.
Our favorites were Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies, Oatmeal-Raspberry Bars (without the sugar glaze because of our diet restrictions) and Easy Ice Cream Sandwiches made with Dark Chocolate Cake Mix (our personal favorite cake mix). It is easy to change things like chocolate chips to dark chocolate chips or butterscotch chips and different types of cake mixes to add variety.
It is a good reference cookbook when you need a quick treat for visitors.

Okay recipes
Good recipes, but they all use cake mixes from the store. Most of the time when you take the time to bake a cake, your trying to avoid using anything of the box type of foods.

Fast & Easy ~
I liked the recipes in this book. Fast and easy with simple and easy to read instructions. I liked the variety of recipes. I saw a few I want to try.
