Loads of cave drawings, paintings, and photographs, each captioned with detailed descriptions and a synopsis of the history that applies. The evolution of the drum's use, from religious to war to celebration, sometimes combinations of two or more.

Descriptions of the making of drums, the types of trees and hides that best suit the purpose (although human hides are rare anymore), the preparation of certain types of drums before a large ceremony. Even inventions of certain types, like the traps, are included, or heating of the tars, a type of drum used in the Arab nations, are included.

While I knew the world used percussion for all these reasons, it was a fascinating book, very well put together, much research and collaboration lovingly assembled by the Grateful Dead drummer.

Wondrous survey of percussion around the world by one of the premier drummers in rock and roll. His labyrinthine and very personal exploration of drumming is peppered with academic references, insights, and of course, music. There's an accompanying CD available for purchase.

Good, but more of a companion piece to Drumming at the Edge of Magic

In this, the follow-up and companion to Drumming at the Edge of Magic , Grateful Dead percussionist Hart and his collaborators artfully arrange excerpts, extracts, and images from the previous volume's primary source material. Planet Drum draws on many of the same graphic design principles as its contemporaries in the Time-Lifen Mysteries of the Unknown series, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but in the case of this book it means that there is oftentimes too much unused space on the page. Hart's CD of the same name, released in parallel, is quite listenable, but I wish the music on the disc could have been more explicitly cued to the book. In retrospect, these were the deficiencies in the book and CD that led to their being winnowed from my library in the first place.

Mickey Hart is an amazing percussionist, and has done much to educate the world on the healing power of rhythm and drumming. This book is full of fascinating facts about drums across the world, and the nature of rhythm, such as the law of entrainment. It's heavily illustrated, so you get to see what the drums look like, and he connects the drums to their cultural context. Their is also a CD by the same name, which features some of the instruments in the book.

Planet Drum: A Celebration of Percussion and Rhythm by Mickey Hart (Acid Test Productions)(780.9+/-) provides a Grateful Dead drummer's perspective on the societal interest in drumming and rhythm as well as a view of the Grateful Dead experience from the drummers' seat. My rating: 7/10, finished 1/1/1998.

I read this because of my liking of the Grateful Dead. It, however, was a very interesting read. My interest in music spread in part due to this book.
