Nothing spooky about this trio of paranormal romance novellas, while I was expecting ghostly themed romances, all the stories were instead 'mate' hookups. But since most of the pairs had a history, the mate bond didn't have to do all of the work. And even though these were short, all of the authors fit a decent amount of story and world building in their offerings.

Jeaniene Frost leaves her Night Huntress world behind (so no Cat and Bones) and introduces a new world in her tale "Night's Darkest Embrace" - Seeking to avenge the death of a beloved cousin, half-blood demon Mara crosses back over into Nocturna, a world of eternal night . Though he saved her from her cousin's fate, the gorgeous ruler Raphael is hiding something and despite her attraction to him, Mara is determined to discover just what that might be - Raphael's secret adds an element to his claiming of Mara that I really liked.

Shayla Black's "Mated" is a Doomsday Brethren short. Raiden is from a defective branch of the Brethen, his family has lost the ability to sense their mates and they no longer settle down with just one woman. And Raiden has no intention of breaking family tradition despite his attraction to the one woman he just can't get out of his mind. And when this former lover becomes the target of the evil enemy of his people, Raiden will struggle with his sudden need to keep her close to keep her safe when he knows that keeping her with him puts her in just as much danger = - this one works fine as a standalone, but Black starts out by reminding us of her villain's sadistic proclivities and that is one thing that keeps me from being a huge fan of her series - it's just a few lines though, and I liked the rest of the story. (Raiden's twin's story "Fated" may still be available as a free read on the author's website, otherwise it's a ebook cheapie - if your liked this story, you may want to check it out)

Sharie Kohler offers a Moon Chasers short, "Darkest Temptation". As a half-blood `were' Luc, has the power to control his wolf, but his life is an isolated one until a newly bitten woman enters his territory. Even knowing that he will have to kill her to keep her from becoming a ravening beast come the next full moon, the lovely Lily stirs something inside his lonely heart. - Both of the leads in the story were just so sympathetic and appealing, that even though it was animal attraction that forged their initial connection, I couldn't help but hope for pair to find their way to a happily ever after.

My friend Jeaniene Frost sent me this book signed. I'm very fortunate to know this smart and beautiful talented lady. In this book Jeaniene has went in a different direction from her Cat and Bones series. Jeaniene writes about Demons, Purebloods, and the Fallen. Has this got your attention yet. Our herione is named Mara. She is half Demon and she visits to a parallel world from our time that is called Nocturna. At Nocturna it never becomes day. Mara is on a mission, to find the Pureblood who took her cousin. The Purebloods feed off of the partials, (half demons and lower creatures). The Purebloods take the partials essence. They are very hard to kill or stop. The only thing the Purebloods fear are the Fallen. The Fallen are Angels that have fallen to earth.
For a great story you need to read about Mara and the Leader of Nocturna Raphael. This is a story with a amazing twist. This is the first of three stories in this book.

The second book author in this book is Shayla Black. To be honest I've never heard of Shayla nor have I read anything by her until this book. Her story is about the Doomsday Brethren, there magical warriors who try to protect our realm from evil Wizards. We have one Brethren in particular who is trying to protect a Witch name Tabitha who is carrying his youngling. This story has love them leave them men in it. But it also has a hard to resist love story between some of the characters. You see one of the Brethren thinks he's incapable of loving anyone or mating to them. Let's say you have to read this story to see how everything works out. I don't think we've heard the last of Shayla on the Doomsday Brethren.

The last story and author we have is Sharie Kohler her story about the Lycans will have you reading up and more about the Lore of the Lycans. Our story is about Lilly, she is attacked and she is told if she kills her Alpha she can become human again. She meets a mysterious man named Luc who she is told is her Alpah. She trys to take his life and this is where the story picks up. Please take the time to read thes wonderful writings, I promise you, you wont regreat it.

Frost burns up the pages in her new novella titled, Night’s Darkest Embrace, in the anthology, Haunted By Your Touch.

In typical Frost style the writing is well paced, the dialogue witty and smart, the heroine kick-ass and the hero smoldering.

We’re quickly submerged in Mara’s struggle to discover the details of her cousin’s disappearance. Mara is a likable character with a balance of bravery, smarts, down to earth goodness and ‘shoot ‘em up, kill ‘em’ instincts.

The setting is Nocturna, a dark parallel universe that is intriguing and sultry. There’s plenty of detail to make you ponder the details of the societies that live there long after you’ve put the book down, but not enough to bore you with the unnecessary.

Raphael is a character who’s mysterious, sexy and powerful. He is one of the hottest alpha males this side of Hell. I know he melted me into a quivering puddle of goo with that sexy voice of his. At the same time, he wasn’t a typical, cliché, over-the-top alpha male. The man has depth. And I’d plumb him any day.

For all the reasons I love this genre – cool preternatural creatures, fantastical worlds, smoking romance – I loved this short. Not typically a fan of short stories, I was hooked in and invested in Mara’s journey right at the first paragraph. Besides the elements I love of this genre, Frost made me believe in Mara’s cause, swoon at Raphael’s intensity and grip my seat in anticipation. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. I could have easily read a whole series about these characters and the dimensions they live in. Yet the ending was satisfying and left me smiling.

Frost has done it again -- further proving that no matter which kind of damned creature she’s writing about – you’re gonna wanna read it.

Night’s Darkest Embrace. Jeanine Frost.
Being a half demon gives Mara the ability to see the veil between the demon realm and the human one. Now with her parents away on vacation it’s the perfect time to return to Nocturna.

Ever since she reached adulthood Mara has returned to Nacturna to exact revenge on the pureblood demon that took and killed her cousin when they were teens. If it hadn’t been for Rafel she would have been dragged into the purebloods realm also, never to be seen again.

Knowing Rafel’s attraction for her is strong she decides that she can use that to seduce him into giving her the information she seeks. She knows he is hiding something and is determined to find out what. But what she does find is an attraction she cannot deny, and secretes that will change everything.

I loved this story. Jeanine frost rock, as always. Rafel is hot, powerful, sexy and ruler of the underworld what more could you want? There was just enough background story to get you going, without going into so much detail and overwhelming the story. The story is exciting from start to finish. As always Jeanine's bedroom Scene was amazing. This story alone is worth the price of the whole book.

" " Rafael ," a clear voice demanded "what do you think you're doing with that female ?" "taking her to my room to ravish her , mother," he replied shortly

Mated by Shayla black

Raiden was never the mating type, his family was cursed to never be able to sense there one true mate. So as a rule he lived his life with one night stands. But when he met Tabitha she intrigued him in ways he couldn't explain. But knowing the danger in his life, as a Doomsday Brethren, would either get her hurt or him killed. He knew he would not make a good enough mate for her, even if she is carrying his youngling.

But once her family was attacked and killed and she came up missing from the house, every protective instinct in him came alive . But can he save her, protect her from harm and still hand her over to mate another in his place ?

This was a great story I really liked Raiden he battled his love for Tabby for what he thought was her benefit. I got a great glimpse into the Doomsday Brethren world, without having to be told to much background story that would take away from the story at hand. The story was nonstop action from start to finish, always keeping you on your feet. I enjoyed this story so much I have to get the rest of the books in this series to get to know more about the warriors in this series.

Darkest Temptation by Sharie Kohler

After being attacked by a lycan, Lilly is left with one month before the transformation will happen , leaving her a monster like the one that attacked her. Her only hope is the kill the lycan alpha. With the help of a hunter she find the home of who they believe to be the alpha. But what she finds instead is an irresistible lycan hybrid. Fighting her feelings for him is just as useless as fighting the change. She has thirty days to find the cure and return to her normal life "without him" can she go through with it?

The story was very good it had a beauty and the best feel to it which I enjoyed. The story moved very quickly. I'm not sure if this story is part of a series or not, but it left room for more at the end without leavening you high and dry.
My Rating 3 1/2 - 4

I thought the whole book was very good. Three very sexy and fast paced, all around good stories. I love to buy anthologies in the hopes they will have great stories in them, but ninety percent of the time I'm disappointed. For once this book did not disappoint. The stories lived up to their authors reputations. Even if you normally do not read anthologies I would give this one a try its only three stories but each one is well worth the book.

Over all rating 4 1/2

Night's Darkest Embrace by Jeaniene Frost

While in their teens half blooded demons Mara and her cousin Gloria crossed over into another realm, Nocturna. What they thought would be a good time with 2 handsome men who were partial bloods like them, ended with the disappearance of Gloria and if it wasn't for an intervention, Mara too. Now Mara is 22 and is back in Nocturna and searching for the Pureblood who deceived her all those years ago. With the help of sexy and in charge Raphael, Mara is dangerously close to finding the one responsible for taking her cousin.

Mara is smart and resourceful and you can tell she loves her family very much. All qualities I like in a character. Rafael seems to radiated power and sexiness. Even more qualities I like in a character. Both work well together. I liked the world and characters Jeaniene Frost created for this short. This story had a great pace from beginning to end. This is completely different from Jeaniene's Night Huntress world but it's just as interesting. If she turned this into a series I would read it without question.
My Rating: 4/5

Mated by Shayla Black

Raiden is a member of the Doomsday Brethren, a group of warrior wizards who are trying to stop an evil wizard from taking over the magic world. He and the male members of his family are well known for how quickly they move from one bed to the next but Raiden has fallen for a woman he will not let himself have. Tabitha loves Raiden and is pregnant with his child. She wants him but Raiden has agreed to her mating another. When Tabitha's family is killed and she is targeted, Raiden comes to her aid. He will do everything to protect her and their unborn child but the hardest thing may be letting her go once it is all over.

I am a big fan of the Doomsday Brethren series and this story captured everything that is great about the series. Raiden and Tabitha's relationship is one that shouldn't be but you root for it all the way. The romance is balance with a good amount of action. Tabitha's father told her to protect something that is beyond valuable. They just have to figure out what he was talking about while trying to fight off Mathias and his soldiers who are after the same thing. I loved everything about this story and liked that it tied into what is going on with the rest of the series. This is a must for fans of Shayla Black's series.
My Rating: 4.5/5

Dark Temptation by Sharie Kohler

Lily has been bitten by a werewolf and is told that Luc is her alpha. If she kills him she will return to normal. Problem is Luc isn't her alpha and he is more powerful than she was told. Having till the next full moon to find and kill the alpha who turned Lily, Luc will take a break from is solitary existence and help her not become a monster. Even if that means taking her life.

Lily is told by a hunter that killing Luc will stop her from turning into a werewolf and losing her humanity during the next full moon. To her surprise it's not going to be that easy. Luc is something more powerful than just a werewolf and though he tries to be cold and distant to her, he says he will help her. There is a physical attraction right off the bat and they get down and dirty quickly. Actually most of the story is them getting down and dirty and Luc realizing how much he likes Lily. This story was a quick and entertaining read.

Haunted by Your Touch by Jeaniene Frost, Sharie Kohler, and Shayla Black
Paranormal Romance- Oct. 26th, 2010
4 stars

Haunted by Your Touch is an anthology that includes paranormal stories from: Shayla Black’s Doomsday Brethren series, Sharie Kohler’s werewolf series, and an original novel by Jeanine Frost.

Jeaniene Frost's story is a departure from her vampire series. This story has a somewhat lighter tone than her vampire books. It involves a young woman named Mara. Mara is part demon and she is on a mission. She has decided to cross over to another realm called Nocturna where she hopes to mete justice upon the Purebloods that stole her cousin and drained her life. As a partial demon her kind are vunerable to the Purebloods who must feed on them to live. Mara puts her life in danger trying to hunt down her cousin's killer but the unexpected occurs with the sudden appearance of the dangerous leader Rafael. He is the ruler of Notcurna and Mara is convinced he knows more than he reveals about her cousin’s death.
This story is told in 1st person and it had many interesting twists that kept me on my toes. But overall, I think I would have enjoyed it in 3rd person a little better. There was nothing wrong with the story but I didn’t find is as exciting as her vampire series. 4 stars

In Shayla Black’s story she returns to her Doomsday series. Raiden is a well known lothario but his secret is that he actually really cares for Tabitha the mother of his unborn child. Unfortunately, he feels he is not good enough for her and therefore purposely hurts her by treating her poorly. But when her family is attacked and she is believed to be dead Raiden knows he must find the truth.
Raiden’s pain and anguish as he tries to discover why Tabitha‘s family was targeted was a moving read. Although Raiden finally acknowledges his love I wish he had treated Tabitha less callously even if it was supposed to be for ‘her own good.’ This was a solid read but because of behavior Raiden’s character was difficult to like initially. However, fans will enjoy glimpses of previous characters in this story. 4 stars

Sharie Kohler’s story was my favorite. She revisits her paranormal werewolf series. In this story we are again treated to a world where werewolves are uncontrollable beasts that are hunted for the safety of all. Lily finds herself in an untenable situation when her ladies night out results in a savage a werewolf massacre. Her friend is killed and Lily is bitten. Resulting in her turning into a werewolf if she cannot kill the werewolf responsible for her bite within the next full moon.
This story had a very surprising ending. I felt the outcast hero named Luc deserved a measure of happiness. He has been exiled and knows the danger of a loose werewolf. But he still feels compassion for Lily. So instead of putting her down before she succumbs to the werewolf madness he takes care of her. I admired that he had the strength and conscience to treat her far better than humans or werewolves have treated him by giving her a chance. I really felt these 2 deserved each other and I enjoyed the unexpected and delightful happy ending. 5 stars

All these stories were easy to read. Jeaniene Frost’s and Sharie Kohler’s plots were more complex and I loved the twists and turns in each storyline. Fans of their books will definitely want to read this anthology. However, because they are novellas they are not nearly as involving as their full length stories except for Sharie Kohler’s short.

I'm not impressed with this book.

The first of the three stories "Night's Darkest Embrace" by Jeaniene Frost was the best of the three, but I found that I've read a novella that had the same storyline albeit different settings and by that I mean "Pack" it was a story featured in another anthology and in the mammoth book of paranormal romance. Girl saved by boy, he knew from te start she was his mate, she's attracted to him, he saves her life again, and they live happily ever after... don't get me wrong, her writing style makes even the repeated idea enjoyable but I wanted something different cause I know she is an amazing writer.

The second novella "Mated" by Shayla Black was... not believable? The female protagonist keeps crying and hiding behind her hero! she's a witch for Pete's sake!and there was alot of repeated lines and the nonstop wallowing around the same idea it bore me to no end.

The third one was "Darkest Temptation" by Sharie Kohler, this one was action-free story and revolved around 2 things... sex,lycan...lycan,sex...! The male protagonist was a jerk and the female heroine was a pathetic push-over!

That's it.. enjoy!

Review is for J Frost's story: Night's Darkest Embrace
This takes place in Nocturne. Nocturne is a realm where it is always night and those with demon blood (known as Partials) can travel to. The modern world exists too, with Partials traveling back and forth. Other realms exist too, but only Pureblood or Fallen can travel too.
Mara is hunting for the Pureblood that kidnapped and murdered her cousin. As teenagers (15), Mara and Gloria went into Nocturne after being told not to by their parents. Mara feels guilty and returns once she is of age. She has a huge crush on Raphael who saved her from bringing kidnapped/murdered. She also knows he isn't telling the complete truth about what happened. She knows he is hiding something. The big question is- is he trust worthy?
This is an interesting world and did take some time for me to get into. Once I did, I really enjoyed it and had a hard time putting it down. Wish there were more in this world, it's an interesting one.

finished Haunted by Your Touch (Doomsday Brethren #3.5) by Jeaniene Frost pretty good, I wish there was more to the jeaniene's frost story like more books in that world i would most definitely read more of it. THe other two were good as well, and will read more of these authors as well, but just like any other anthology they are rushed and leave you hanging for more.

I received this book as an ARC.

Haunted by Your Touch is a collection of three stories from sizzling paranormal romance authors.

The first is Night's Darkest Embrace by Jeaniene Frost. Set in a world of dimension jumping demons it's rife with emotion, mainly of the tragic and vengeance kind. Mara is a quarter demon, strong enough to cross over to Nocturna, a wild west/Victorian era feeling dimension of demons. When she was a teen she and her cousin ran afoul of some Full Blood demons, who feed on Parials like herself. Since then she's dedicated her life to finding her cousin's killer.

The world is neat and intriguing except for the repeated reminder that even simple machines like watches don't work in Nocturna, yet somehow guns do. The plot is certainly not terrible, but it depends on a misunderstanding that's plain as day. Overall the story is interesting, vivid and clips along nicely, but the misunderstanding twist adds a sheen of cliché to it that's disappointing.

Next up is Mated by Shayla Black, the weakest of the three (which isn't saying much). This tale of wizards caught up in a dangerous battle against an evil wizard back from the dead who wants to take over the world features at least one powerful, headstrong lead, Raiden, an unabashed womanizer who discovers the home of the woman he knocked up has been attacked and the family is believed to be dead.

The emotion is sizzling in this tale, but it reads like an adult, sexed up version of Harry Potter (imagine Harry Potter meets True Blood). In addition Raiden is an utter jerk and his love Tabby mostly spends her time being rescued and hoping that Raiden will admit he loves her. Which leads to either an abusive feel (at worst), or a jerk of a hero and a weak heroine who can barely do a spell to save herself. While well written, and emotionally powerful I also found it disappointing.

Finally is Darkest Temptation by Sharie Kohler. This one is a complete score, hitting on the old wolfman legend by pitting a newly bitten woman, set up by a hunter to kill someone she thinks is the werewolf whose death can return her soul, with a nearly inhuman man who is neither werewolf or man, but something else.

This one I enjoyed a lot, both the tension between the characters and the doomed feel of Lilly's life (even before she was bitten by a lycan). It's only real flaw is that after a great start there's a hiccup as it rushes to finish the story in a short form.

Despite some disappointment I'd give this book a solid three stars, because the writing is there, I think the stories just didn't strike the right chord with this reader.

This book is HOT! Three very seductive, steamy, suspenseful stories in one book had me riveted. You don't have to read the series by either of the 3 authors before getting started with this book. I have previously read Jeaniene Frost (both Night Huntress series) and Sharie Kohler (Moonchasers series) and have Shayla Black on my wish list, so I was THRILLED to see this anthology with all three of them. I got a sneak peek at RWA 2010 from Sharie Kohler herself.

Jeaniene Frost takes us to another realm, Nocturna, lead by Raphael, who is a fascinating, spicy Partial that has quickly taken an interest in our suspicious Mara who seeks revenge for her cousin. Mara finds herself confused and betrayed as she uncovers who kidnapped her cousin. Just as she thinks she is on the right path, she find that she is mated and in an interesting twist. Frost gave us some very racy scenes that had me longing, with an interesting plot and outcome. I definitely wanted more of Nocturna...

Shayla Black takes us on an emotional ride as we fall instantly in love with Raiden and Tabitha. Raiden has given Tabitha her dream, but can he follow through? Of course, you are not left seeking any thing with this short, my favorite sexy scenes are intense.

Sharie Kohler, who I must thank for this ARC, wrapped me quickly with her short based on her Moonchasers series, which I LOVE. Luc is unique and thrown into a difficult situation. As Lycan with a twist he is out to be killed, when his murderer is a gorgeous woman that has his remembering his past. While trying to save her, he is stuck helping her cope with her change, and giving her what she needs. THANKFULLY, that is sweaty sex :) I can't wait for the next Moonchasers book, My Soul to Keep.

Needless to say, but necessary, I LOVED this anthology. The shorts were the perfect length, I was left breathlessly waiting for more. I hope these 3 team up again, and I am definitely longing for more of all 3 of them. I was in the world, detailed that I felt right along with the characters. The "romance" was hard, fast, slow, sensual, that's right, all the ways we need it. All three stories had action and suspense. I give it 4 1/2 slices :)

This book has three paranormal romance novellas. Now, I'm generally more of an epic kind of girl so I always feel novellas end far too soon but I enjoyed these.

The first one is the tale of a part-demon girl who crosses between dimensions to find out what happened to her cousin. She suspects her cousin ran afoul of the Purebloods, who feed on Partials, and specifically suspects the Lord Rafael. It was a good story, nice mix of romance and action. The characters were well fleshed despite the brevity and the pacing was good.

The second story, Mated, was the weakest of the lot but still likeable. It felt like adapted Harry Potter fanfiction with good and bad wizards running around trying to escape a master bad wizard and lots of wands producing light effects. If the book had only been this story I wouldn't have recommended it but I don't regret having read it.

The final story was my favourite. Werewolves and immortality and some really steamy scenes. The character's dilemma's felt real and I finished it in less than half an hour since I just had to know how it turned out.

All in all, a fortuitous grab from the library.

4.5 stars for JF Nocturna world. "Night's Darkest Embrace". I thoroughly enjoyed this world of demons, angels, other realms and villains. It was well thought out, interesting, fast paced and didn't feel forced or rushed. Mara is a half demon, hell bent on revenge for the murder of her cousin Gloria. Rafael is the ruler of Nocturna, where Mara must travel to find answers to who, and why her cousin and her were kidnapped and Gloria eaten. Written in first person. I liked it a lot. Plot twists were well done, and I didn't see them coming. For a short novel, this was fantastic. I sooo want Frost to write more in this interesting world!

Off to read the rest!

Eh, kind of lame but at least it went by fast. I was ready and excited for a short bones and cat story from Frost but sadly, she did a fluffy little demon story instead...which was by far the best of the bunch. The other two stories were very predictable, even with characters and supernatural worlds I haven't read before to know the rules. Makes me cross both authors off my "should I check this writer out" list. I've been jonesing for a Jennifer crusie type romantic book...this was not it. Oh well.

Wow I pretty much liked all the stories in this anthology, which is rare. I bought this one b/c Frost us one of my favorite PNR authors and I've been having a bit of a dry spell lately. Worth buying if you are a fan of Frost and Shayla Black.

Mated by Shayla Black.. It was Raiden's and Tabitha's short story. So damn glad Raiden settled LOL. And this new "Secret Tree" that's Mathias after. So interesting. Can't wait to read more.

I only read the story by Jeaniene Frost. This is the first story of her's that was not about Bones and company. I was not sure if I would like it or not. I have read books from authors in the past where I only liked characters in that series. I could not stand anything else they wrote. That is not the case here. I loved this story. It did have a few twists and turns. Also has good character development, especially considering that this story is only 156 pages. Many times, I do not like short stories unless it is part of a series. There is just not enough time for character and story development. Here Jeaniene Frost brings a whole new story, with a new species and all new characters and they story is still great. I really enjoyed this story. Now the upsetting thing is that I do not have more of this story to read.

I did not read any of the other stories. My TBR list is entirely too long at this time.

The only story in this book worth reading is Jeaniene Frost. I couldn't finish the second one because it was so boring and took forever to get the story going that I gave up. I am not one who normally does that but I could not take it anymore. The third story was ok I guess, but the the author repeats the same words over and over its like they had a word quota. The stars are only for the first story.

Mated - The warrior who walks away and feels he can't mate due to history and his fight against the sociopathic mage that doesn't seem to have a weakness.

For me it was a bit difficult to understand the world of how Nocturna works at first, but I really enjoyed the story and characters! A really creative way to speak about mates xD

The stories were enjoyable, but I would have liked a little more getting to know the characters.

Definitely recommend all 3 stories all 3 can be read without knowing the other books in the series. Short stories but all have good chemistry and story lines

Three great authors. Anthologies are very hit & miss for me; not enough development for me to care about the characters.

Night's Darkest Embrace - Jeaniene Frost

I really enjoyed this one -- it wasn't her "usual" (that is, it seemed to have nothing to do with the Night Huntress series, at least not that I recognized), but it was still quite good.

What worked for me:
*Wings. Oh mama, I love me some wings *sigh*
*I liked the world building -- it was thorough enough that you got the basic gist of things without bogging the story down with superfluous details that made you want to throw the book at the wall.
*Hot sex and betrayal. I do love me some hot sex and betrayal. *smacks lips*
*I really liked Raphael's mama lol

What didn't work for me:
*The whole eating the souls of lesser demons thing was a little hinky for me.. I mean, how long does that last? Is it like me, who needs a chicken sammich or a mochachino every 3 hours or I feel like I'm starving, or is it more like a "holiday feast" deal where you can get away with munching on them a couple times a year? That needed to be cleared up to me a bit because, yeah, population issues, especially since full-blooded demons are rather rare.

Overall though, I honestly forgot it was a short story as I was reading it, which I say as a compliment, since most short stories feel rather rushed to me, especially when they're not already part of an established series. 4 1/2 Stars

Mated -- Shayla Black -- part of the Doomsday Brethren series.

SO not my cuppa tea. Hero is a manwhore, knocks up the heroine, abandons her knowing she's pregnant, continues to be a manwhore, and then tries to be all like "but I did it for your own good"?? Yeaaaahhh. No.

What worked for me:
*um... hang on, I'm thinking.. yeah, I got nuthin.

What didn't work for me:
*Hero is a manwhore, knocks up the heroine, abandons her knowing she's pregnant, continues to be a manwhore, and then tries to be all like "but I did it for your own good" lol

*I do NOT like the whole "sex recharges magic" theme in my romances because that invariably leads to rampant promiscuity on pretty much everyone's part, which is really REALLY not my thing.

*Obviously a part of a series, I was pretty lost as to who was the bad guy, who were the good guys, and why the hell they were fighting. Probably much better if you've already read the series though, so keep that in mind.

Overall: 1 Star BUT I'm not a fan of the series -- I think fans of the series would appreciate this MUCH more simply because it's a major character that they've already been introduced to, and will be desensitized to the slut-factor.

Darkest Temptation -- Sharie Kohler

This is apparently part of a series (Moon Chasers) but I feel that it did fairly well as a standalone. While it certainly did its job as a "teaser" of sorts and made me want to read the series further, I don't feel like I missed anything in not having read the series.

What worked for me:
*I liked that the heroine is emotionally strong. I agreed with the hero that most women would've been a big watery mess of self-pity, but she wasn't, and I enjoyed that about her. She certainly had a lot to pity herself over -- mother with Alzheimer's, best friend was brutally murdered in front of her, she's bitten by a werewolf, kidnapped by a nutcase vigilante, and now locked in a basement with the understanding that in a month when she "turns" at the next full moon, she'll be killed.

*LOVED that when she was about to be killed, she emphatically stated "My name is Lily" -- humanizing herself which is exactly what you're SUPPOSED to do in that type of crazy situation, but an action that is almost always ignored in novels.

What didn't work for me:
*They fell right into bed VERY shortly after meeting. I know, I know, it's a short story so the timeline is often rushed for things like this, along with the fact that lycans/werewolves/whatevertheycallthem are very sexual beings and that's part of this series' schtick, but still, not really my thing.

OVERALL ANTHOLOGY RATING: 4 Stars, despite the atrocity of the Shayla Black one LOL

Haunted by Your Touch—an Anthology by Jeaniene Frost, Shayla Black and Sharie Kohler
It has only been recently that I have been able to really appreciate anthologies. In the past they have been an irksome expense endured to possess a missing story from a beloved author to fill-in gaps in an ongoing series. I did not truly appreciate them until I began to have crossovers; new series I found and loved that happened to have shorts in anthologies I already owned. It was like finding gold buried on my shelves. All new stories by authors I loved in series I was hooked on that I already had—just waiting to be read. It was a kind of a eureka moment. And I finally realized what I am sure both authors and publishers expect to be apparent at the start—indeed a partial reason behind anthologies—that if you like one author’s writing in them, odds are you might like some of the others. Stupid simple, but hey, I’m a simple kinda gal…sometimes it takes me a while to grasp seemingly obvious ideas. It is with this in mind that I read through Haunted by Your Touch, and while one of the stories did leave me flat I also found an author I’ve never read before and enjoyed their work. So, fair trade.
“Night’s Darkest Embrace” by Jeaniene Frost
When I bought this anthology I did so mainly for Ms. Frost’s contribution to it; tho I have to admit I was under the impression that this story was set in her Night Huntress series. When I read “Night’s Darkest Embrace” and discovered it was in a new and different world I was somewhat surprised, surprised but overjoyed because—just as most of Ms. Frost’s works that I have read thus far—it is a wonderful story. Set in a reality where Fallen Angels, Demons and Partials (those who only have a percent of demon blood) can travel to different dimensions this short novella had me love the characters from the moment I met them. The world building was immersive, and the plot moved so that you were never quite sure where it would take you next, but were eager for the ride. This story also had Ms. Frost’s scorch-marks very much in evidence; the passion was explosive and like in any good romance novel love made sure of a happy ending. I lapped up all 156 pages of this story and would be thrilled to pieces if Ms. Frost ever chose to return to this world and write another dose of wonderful.
I give this story five stars.

“Mated” by Shayla Black
This story was my first taste of Ms. Black’s writing, and I have to say that I would go back for seconds. Set in the “Doomsday Brethren” series, “Mated” was a fun mage-type story that despite being thrown into a universe that I was unfamiliar with managed to stand on its own. In this evocative tale Ms. Black let me feel the measure of the world she had created and care for not just the central characters but have a relationship with several more that I gather already had their own stories told. While this particular world may not be one I will seek out again, as I am not much for the evil-wizard-taking-over-the-world bit I was still impressed by the feel that was created. Ms. Black’s characterization was the redeeming factor for me, the intimacy and feeling she was able to induce with her characters, even when they were being obstinate in realizing it touched a chord with me. She managed to capture me in her 121 pages, and for that I will keep my eye out for other possible works she may create.
I give this story three stars.

“Darkest Temptation” by Sharie Kohler
In the hit and miss world of the anthology this story was a miss for me. I’ll admit it, I couldn’t even read it all the way through. I’m sure that Ms. Kohler is wonderful in her craft, but this story and writing just rubbed me the wrong way. Full of werewolves and hunters and an attacked heroine I just couldn’t hack it long enough to experience the story. Hopefully if you give it a try your mileage will vary.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy

This anthology hinges around the forbidden and irresistible; the compelling touch of the person you know you shouldn't be with but just can’t deny. Of the three stories presented, Jeaniene Frost did not disappoint, Shayla Black’s story didn’t work for me, and Sharie Kohler’s Darkest Temptation led me to add her other books to my TBR pile. All in all, a well balanced collection and an enjoyable read.

Night’s Darkest Embrace by Jeaniene Frost (154 pages)

There are always neighborhoods where parents warn their children away, places with enough danger to be attractive to predators and prey alike. Jeaniene Frost’s Night’s Darkest Embrace is a novel twist on this concept, as this “bad neighborhood” is the gateway dimension Nocturna, an enticing middle ground between Earth and the wide multi-verse that can only be accessed by those with demon blood. The danger that drives the heroine, Mara, back to Nocturna also forces her into contact with Raphael, the powerful demon who raises both her suspicions and her heartrate. Night’s Darkest Embrace seemed like a great set up to a full length novel, showing us only a few parts of the Nocturna and the bumpy beginnings of Mara and Raphael. I would have preferred more detail and breadth, but what was there just whetted my appetite for more. 4/5 stars

Mated by Shayla Black (122 pages)

Mated was strike two for me with the Doomsday Brethren (this short story falls as #3.5 in the series). Both it and ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT include characters that have significant self-worth/trust issues, which can be a hard sell for me under any circumstances. When said characters go ahead and get halfway into a relationship before their issues kick in, the author has pretty much lost me. I really didn’t like that Raiden had allowed himself to get involved enough with Tabitha to father a child, but wouldn’t go any further without much jaw clenching and fence sitting and unprotected sex (Hey, you can only get knocked up once!). While his reasoning for wanting to leave Tabby is sound (he doesn’t want to endanger her by making her a target for his enemies or abandon his brothers-in-arms by “leaving” the conflict), the whole situation was a major turn off for me. Still keeping an eye out for future books that will feature Shock, but I no longer have any desire to read through the back catalogue. 2/5 stars

Darkest Temptation by Sharie Kohler (106 pages)

By far my favorite story in the book, Sharie Kohler creates a fabulous mix of old-school werewolf myths and the more modern flavor of romance and redemption. I read this short story twice, and have put MARKED BY MOONLIGHT on my TBR list to get more of this series (and Abigail tells me “Sharie Kohler” is the pseudonym of Sophie Jordan, which adds FIRELIGHT to my list as well!). I loved Kohler’s take on the werewolf transition, human DNA dying and being supplanted by the lycan strain, and the ending of this short story was completely unexpected. In between that beginning and ending, there’s lots of “mindless attraction” (as well as the more sweet, emotional variety) to keep things spicy. 4/5 stars

Sexual Content: All three of these short stories have explicit sex scenes.

I am a big fan of Jeaniene Frost. Her Cat & Bones series is one of my favorites. So her name on the cover was a good enough reason for me to try the anthology "Haunted by Your Touch."

Her contribution, "Night's Darkest Embrace," is a departure from her usual vampire fare. This novella features a partial demon, Mara. She journeys to the demon realm of Nocturna to avenge the death of her cousin. But while she searches for answers, she crosses paths with Rafael, the leader of Nocturna. She has been attracted to him for years, but knows that he keeps secrets about himself and his connection to the full blooded demons (who killed her cousin.) So she convinces him to bring her to his home on the pretext of sex. While there, she plans to search for answers. The only problem is, her feeling for him are too real to fake.

The chemistry between Mara and Rafe is off the charts. And Frost can write the heck out of her love scenes. There was a lot of world building in this short story, so you have to pay attention. But I really enjoyed it. When all was said and done, I was left wondering how Rafe managed to be a good guy with the lineage he has... but that lingering question wasn't enough to take away from my enjoyment of the story.

The second novella, "Mated," is part of Shayla Black's ongoing Doomsday series. I've never read any of those books, but after this short story, I will definitely give them a try. Raiden is a wizard who has lived a life more interested in loving than fighting. But he is now part of the Doomsday brethren... a group of seven guys who fight evil. He is in love with Tabby and got her pregnant (presumably in some earlier book in the series), but he doesn't think he can give her the life she deserves, so he refuses to mate with her. He thinks he has put her out of his life, but an evil wizard kills her family and now Tabby is in terrible danger. Raiden needs to keep her safe, but can he fight his feelings now that he has her with him again?

I liked this story. Obviously, there is a lot of backstory, but it was fairly easy to jump in as a new reader. For some reason, I felt like the story was a little foreign. We had words like "knickers" and "bloody" floating around, but maybe it's supposed to be set in Britain or something. Maybe that, too, will be explained by other books in the series.

The last novella was "The Darkest Temptation," by Sharie Kohler. It was the shortest of the three and I really liked this one too. Lily has been attacked by a Lycan and she thinks that killing Luc (who she is told is the pack Alpha) will keep her from changing. Luc catches her and can't quite bring himself to kill her. The two have great chemistry from the start and I wish I had more of their story to read. My next stop will be to check out Kohler's Moon Chaser books.

A great anthology. I enjoyed all three stories and discovered two new authors. 4 1/2 stars.

Normally I am not a big fan of short stories so I usually give 2 or 3 stars by default, because they are simply too short for any real plot and character development. I’d usually skip certain stories in a compilation just so I could get to my favourite authors and/or read about a favourite character in a side story. However, the difference with this compilation is that it actually only contains 3 shorts. This means that there’s a lot more room/pages to tell a story than many other shorts that I’ve come across.

Night’s Darkest Embrace by Jeaniene Frost
I give this one 4 stars. With this particular one written by JF, I thought the story was good, packed with actions, elements of romance, and actually told a story quite well. I found that I enjoyed this quite a bit. The idea that there were realms in between the human world and the demon world was quite interesting. Well, it actually reminded me a bit of Ilona Andrews’ Edge series, but in essence this world was not really the same as the Edge, but there were indeed similarities.

Mated by Shayla Black
I’ve never read any books by Shayla Black. Based on this short, it’d appear to me as though it was part of an existing series, as it had references to things that had already happened, a war that was brewing etc. Considering that I had no context to this world that the author built, I thought the story told was somewhat interesting – a tormented warrior mage (Raiden) fell in love with a hottie (Tabitha) but was too afraid to commit so he was willing to give up the love of his life and his unborn child to another man who was better equipped to take care of them. Well, it was okay, but at the same time I found the guy annoying. On the one hand, he wanted a good life for the woman, but on the other he couldn’t keep his hands off of her. This was just WRONG!!! Anyway, while I thought the story was long enough to convey the story and it had a happy ending (as expected), I’d only give it a 2.5 star rating.

Darkest Temptation by Sharie Kohler
Again, I’ve not read any books by this author. I have no idea if this was part of an existing series or not. It took me a while to understand that the male lead (Luc) was a shapeshifter who could shift at will (not confined to the lunar cycles) and that this was different from a lycan. Lily, the female protagonist, was sent to kill Luc, thinking that by doing so would free herself of the lycan virus. Having no idea of what this was all about, I just thought this was plain stupid. Not for an instance would I buy into this crap about a regular mundane girl, who happened to have been bitten by a lycan wolf, would suddenly find the courage and strength to kill someone who she had never met. It just seemed very unconvincing and unnatural. The instant attraction that Luc felt towards Lily also felt more like lust than love. Anyway, I found myself not really getting into the story at all. I give this one only 2 stars.

On the whole I give this book 3 stars (it’s sort of like an average of the 3 stories).
