The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
I borrowed this ebook bundle because we can't keep the My Weird School books on the shelf at the library and I wanted to see what they were like. The teachers aren't actually crazy like the book titles suggest, they just use teaching techniques that the child characters in the book find strange. I'll give Dan Gutman points, he pretty much tailor-made this series for reluctant readers. The narrator, A.J., claims to hate school and hate every idea that the teachers propose to motivate learning, but by the end of each book in the series, he's a convert to the subject that the teacher is trying to convey. This isn't my favorite transitional series, but these kinds of formulaic books that attract reluctant readers definitely have an important place on the library shelves.
I am a mean mom! I make my kids read during summer, and this set is what my youngest daughter (8) is concentrating on this summer. Any book that helps my kid read, and love reading earns an automatic 5 stars. It is humorous, and the characters are realistic, one character love school and is a know it all, while another hates school and the know it all peer. My daughter often stops in mid sentence to laugh at what is taking place, and joins in on judging the characters. Each novel can be read independently of each other, and for younger readers try "My Weird School" .
In second grade I would read a these books almost every day. I liked these books mainly because they where funny. Also every book had different teachers that are crazy and do funny things. I could relate to these books because I was the same age as the main character and I also had weird teachers.
I saw The Weird School series named on a list of books recommended especially for reluctant reader boys. After reading four books, I would agree. A.J. , the maid character, is in second grade and claims to hate school. To his surprise, when he tell his teacher that he hates school, Miss Daisy says that she hates school too and if she didn't have to be here teaching, she could be home on the couch watching TV and eating bonbons. All the adults are quirky and the students suspect that they are impostors. A formula develops, and by the end of the book, the students have decided to work with the teacher, or keep his/her secret, but "it won't be easy".
The appeal of these books is that they are brief (less than 100 pages) and zany. The kids are "real" and the school setting is familiar to most readers. The formula fiction is a plus, not a negative for younger readers, because they like being able to predict and see a familiar pattern in the various books.
#1 Miss Daisy Is Crazy! - 2nd grade teacher #2 Mr. Klutz Is Nuts! - Principal #3 Mrs. Roopy Is Loopy! - Librarian #4 Ms. Hannah Is Bananas! - Art teacher
I read Mrs. Roopy is Loopy! from Dan Gutman’s My Weird School series. The series follows a boy named A.J. who claims to hate school. Mrs. Roopy, the new librarian at Ella Mentry School, “invites” famous historical figures and nursery rhyme characters to the library to encourage her students to read. The students suspect that these guest speakers are in fact Mrs. Roopy in disguise. They decide to investigate, and are determined to find out if Mrs. Roopy is crazy or just a devoted librarian.
Dan Gutman understands young reader’s humor and has created a fantastic book formula to draw in even the most reluctant of readers. The My Weird School series is perfect for students to practice their reading skills with its repetitive yet hysterical narrative and story lines. But don’t mention that part to your kiddos, they might run away in fear they could learn something. A must have collection for any grade school library or classroom!
I got this e-book bundle on sale and read through the 4 books because they fly off the shelf at the elementary school. I thought they were a bit formulaic, and the characters were one-dimensional. Some of it was cute, and I don't think they're a bad influence or anything, but I don't see myself reading any more of the series. It's just nice to know what the kids are reading.
I would read ALL the weird school books (which I did). I think they are so kid friendly. In elementry school, Dan Gutman came to visit. I FREAKED!!! Love his books. I would put all his books on my goodreads account!
It's fabulous. This series give us lots of perspectives about education. The teachers in here are very creative and know how learning fun is good for kids.
