"‘Roger Chapman, you’re to come with me. Now. To the Duke of Gloucester. My master is in urgent need of a man whom he can trust.’ Those of you who have bothered to read my reminiscences thus far will know that during my first adventure – which I referred to just now – I also managed, quite fortuitously, to render a very important service to His Grace, the Duke of Gloucester, as a result of which it appeared that I was now to be pressed into use to do him another. As there was no way in which I could refuse the request, even though it would impinge on time when I should be earning my livelihood, I reflected on the inadvisability of getting mixed up with one’s betters in the first place."

It has been two years since the events in Death and the Chapman. The English civil war between the “Houses of Lancaster and York” continues. Roger Chapman, who left “the life of the cloth before he could become a Benedictine monk, has been peddling various items and notions among the highways and byways of southern England. This tale begins in the southwest area of Exeter and Cornwall.

These tales are being told by a much older Roger, so much like Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Tales. This gives the narrator the ability to comment on his younger self and how he has changed through the years. I have not changed in the reasons why I enjoy Sedley’s approach. Here the story starts with a diplomatic mission which turns into thriller and then stays with solving a murder for much of its length. I learned a lot about the slave trade in dwarfs otherwise known then as “mannikins.” "As you have just indicated, these mannikins exist in every country.’ He shrugged and finished the remaining stew in his bowl. ‘Common sense. It’s better to sell them in a foreign land, where they are unable to run away and return home whenever the fancy takes them. So we sold English dwarfs in Italy and France, and French and Italian dwarfs over here. At one time, there was a great demand for English dwarfs in Italy. No noble household was complete without one.’"

Roger is likeable and “driven” as an investigator. "…until that was certain, I was loath to let the matter rest. ‘Nosiness’, my mother had called it when I was young; a desire to stick that member into other people’s business. John Selwood, the Abbot of Glastonbury, had been kinder and, when sanctioning my release from the Order, had referred to my ‘insatiable curiosity’, piously hoping that I would always use it in the quest for truth."

There is a lot of historical detail mixed with social conventions, religious and other beliefs and how people of various classes related to each other. The “thriller” was fine but the descriptions of life – in a village or the metropolis; among friends or strangers; at various levels of status and wealth were the real treasure.

This is the second mystery in the Roger the Chapman series and is set in 1473 when the Earl of Oxford was trying to forment unrest against King Edward’s rule. Duke Richard of Gloucester is in Exeter and when he learns that Roger is the city, he asks Roger to guard a royal agent who is carrying a letter to the Duke of Brittany. Roger will have to protect the agent, Philip Underwood, from more that just enemy spies, for the latter has acquired many enemies over the course of his unsavory career as a slave trader, specifically selling dwarves who had become fashionable accessories in the houses of the nobility throughout Europe.

When Philip does get himself killed with Roger’s cudgel (aka, a Plymouth Cloak), Roger must solve the crime and complete the mission. The plot is entertaining, although it seemed rather implausible that Philip would decide to go off to a manor in the countryside when his ship out of Plymouth was delayed . The information in this and other volumes in the series about the slave trade particularly out of Bristol is interesting, as are other details about everyday life during this time period.

Kate Sedley has set her historical mystery in the period just before the reign of Richard III. Richard is still Duke of Gloucester. In an attempt to get a message to one of the king’s allies, he hires Roger the Chapman (a chapman was like an itinerant peddler) to accompany Philip Underwood, who will carry the letter. Unfortunately, Philip is a former speculator and trader in dwarfs; evidently the aristocracy enjoyed having such anomalies around court, and they could be sold for considerable sums. Soon Philip is being tracked by those who would do him harm and Roger has his hands full protecting Philip’s life. To no avail. Philip is killed, and Roger must solve the crime.

It’s an enjoyable enough period piece, but my faith in Sedley’s research was challenged when I read of a carter delivering bales of hay to one of the lords. I doubt if much baling went on during Richard’s day.

The Plymouth Cloak
Roger the Chapman #2

By Kate Sedley
Reviewed March 10, 2024

In the fall of 1473, Roger the Chapman is making his way through Exeter as he sells his wares. There’s a lot of rumbling going on about the Earl of Oxford being holed up at St Michael’s Mount. Roger doesn’t see this as having anything to do with him personally until he is approached by the Duke of Gloucester’s spy master. Roger has done a service for the duke in the previous story (Death and the Chapman), so when Roger shows up, naturally, Duke Richard enlists his aid once again.

And so Roger finds himself being the bodyguard to Philip Underwood, a messenger who is carrying a letter from King Edward to Duke Francis of Brittany. Philip is not the most savory of characters, but as Gloucester explains, in this kind of business, you have to deal with all kinds. The most important thing is that this mission remains secret.

As they make their way to the coast, Roger has the feeling that they are being followed. One time, he spies a shadowy figure in the distance, and on another occasion, there is a mysterious stranger who appears at the same inn where they are staying. Coincidence? Or is this an agent of those who would prefer to oust Edward from the throne and put a Lancastrian back on it?

While waiting for the ship Philip is to take to Brittany, the two men stay at the country estate of Lord Perivel, who just happens to be in London. Philip convinces the steward that he is a friend of Perivel’s, enabling him and Roger to have comfortable rooms for a few nights. Unfortunately, Philip has a roving eye and manages to anger the husband of the pretty young lass with whom he has been flirting.

The next day, Philip is found dead. It is a messy homicide, with him being stabbed and bludgeoned with Roger’s Plymouth cloak, the nickname for the cudgel he carries.

Is this the doing of the enraged husband? Of the agent who has been dogging their trail? Or…is there something more sinister in Philip’s past that finally caught up with him?

Kate Sedley has written under several pen names, including Brenda Honeyman and Brenda Clarke, with many of her books taking place during the time of the Wars of the Roses. Her knowledge of the history of the times helps give her stories a realistic background and adds to the flavor of the times. Inveterate Ricardian that I am, the fact that she depicts Richard of Gloucester in a positive manner makes me like her books all the more.

#2 in the 13th Century English Roger the Chapman mystery series. It is 1522 and 70 year old Roger is recounting his life starting with leaving the life of a monk at Glastonbury at age 19 in 1471, to set off into the world as a wandering peddler or chapman and finds his true calling in solving mysteries.

Two years since the events in Death and the Chapman and the English civil war between the “Houses of Lancaster and York” continues. It is 1374, Roger, now 21, is in Exeter when he is summoned by the Duke of Gloucester who asks him to provide protection to Plymouth and boards a ship for a royal messenger who carries a crucial secret letter to France. It is supposed to be for 2 days. Threats abound as the messenger has a host of people he's offended over the years and people belonging to other factions would love the get their hands on the message. The ship is delayed so it takes longer. However, the messenger is killed and with Roger’s cudgel (aka, a Plymouth Cloak), Roger must solve the crime to keep himself from being suspected and complete the mission.

Kate Sedley has woven another exceptional medieval mystery. The threads of the plot are vibrant and intriguing, ultimately intertwining to reveal an unexpected, bold tapestry. Her well-formed characters posses much depth, the setting is beautifully descriptive, and the turmoil of the period provides an effective backdrop to this 2nd adventure of Roger the chapman.

A favorite passage:
"The rutted track was barred with long October shadows and the pale sunshine struggled to make itself felt between the dying leaves of the overhanging trees. A late-flowering patch of musk mallow, its pale rose blooms nodding at the end of fragile stalks, gleamed corpse-like among the ragged grasses. A bird sang high in the branches above me, and the river rippled on its gentle way somewhere below." (page 160, First US edition, 1992 hardcover)

Quick, interesting mystery tale set during the War of the Roses in 15th century SW England. Our sleuth, Roger comes from an interesting background and profession, which gives him both curiosity and a healthy sense of suspicion. In this outing he is doing a favor for the King's brother by accompanying the King's messenger to Plymouth with an important letter. Only there are others who are following to stop that letter and messenger.

The first half of this book was traveling with landscaping description, stopping to eat with description, places to sleep with description, people met with descriptions. Then a murder, with motives and possibilities of who may have done it repeated multiple times. The conclusion was with motive was heart rendering.

I enjoyed this and the rest of the first five books ! I can’t think why I haven’t read them before, because I’ve read the rest of them ! The plots are pretty standard , but the time slot is new to me . A pleasure.

Intriguing

After his first adventure, I'm surprised Roger has not become more wary of older women. This adventure is less hair-raising than the first, and the mystery less easy for the reader to solve. Still, it was an enjoyable read.

A solid entry in the Chapman series. I felt like books 1 and 4 and better than this one. However, someone who is observant would love this story due to details from early in the story and their impact later.

This book was a bit of a letdown for me, compared to the first Roger the Chapman book. I found the plot a bit too linear to be honest. Still, Roger the Chapman is an adorable character and I love the way you get a glimpse of what everyday life was like back then when reading Sedley's books.
