A Man of Few Words

Rate this book
Adaptations and explorations of Jane Austen's most beloved and well-known work have too often transformed Fitzwilliam Darcy into the stereotypical alpha male of Regency romances. In an effort to correct that popular misunderstanding, Darcy now offers within the pages of this novella a more "balanced" view of the relationship between himself and Elizabeth Bennet.

The name of Jane Austen is just the Eldorado for every writer and publisher with scarce fantasy: This book is just a summary made from someone who heard Darcy's point of view, and frankly,to me, this isn't the Real Darcy . It's rather disappointing. Honestly, I could have done it much better!

State attenti, autori di spin-off! Georgiana non perdona!

A swift retelling of Pride and Prejudice in Darcy's POV. Humorous, light and airy.

I heartily appreciated the "to the pointness" of this book. No dawdling on uninteresting events... Some might find it rushed but I liked the efficiency.
Darcy was extremely forthright but what he thought he had said and what was perceived by others, did not always coincide. Which made this an interesting read, albeit a tad superficial.
I liked the sarcastic undertow but I would have preferred some deeper emotions as well.

Quick read and the POV is Darcy’s

I’ve often wondered what was going on inside Mr. Darcy’s head as he stood looking grave and silent on the fringe of the ballroom or parlor. We now know that his head was full of things he wished to say, wanted to say…could have said, should have said and wished he had said.

This work is reported to be an addendum to P&P. The only think new will be what is inside Darcy’s head. His point of view and what his feelings are on any given subject. Read the other reviews, especially the ones that are full disclosure. There is no need for me to repeat what they have already reported.

I thought this was a cute bit of writing. I enjoyed being in Darcy’s head for a few minutes. I’ve always wanted to know what he was thinking. This was cute.

A Man of Few Words is a concurrent story about Darcy's point of view during Pride and Prejudice. I really enjoyed seeing his thoughts during the early stages of the story, where he interprets Elizabeth's affection for him (and not realizing that it was she whom he slighted at the Assembly). A few point later in the story I found his speech to be a bit too modern, but I think that's part of the challenge of a modern writer writing as we did 200 years ago.

A pleasant read!

I am a big Austen fan, but I was disappointed in this remake of the story line. I made myself finish three chapters per day just to have this one done and over with.

I didn't hate it, but it also didn't feel like a finished piece of fiction. There were a few funny spots, though.

This is a pleasant read with few surprises. If you have read Pride and Prejudice you know what happens here, it's the story from Darcy's perspective. Recollections may vary so he describes some conversations somewhat differently than Elizabeth perceived.

Do you like to read Pride and Prejudice? This little book is the story of Elizabeth and Darcy, but from Darcy's viewpoint. You need to be familiar with P&P in order to appreciate the book.

Mr. Darcy is the man of few words and as promised he provides a brief addendum to Pride and Prejudice sharing with the reader what was going through his head at the time. Mr. Darcy is a bit socially awkward and dislikes large gatherings of any type so when at the Meryton Assembly, his friend Charles suggests Darcy dance, Darcy rejects the idea without realizing who he is rejecting. Soon he's captivated by Miss Elizabeth's wit, intelligence and fine eyes but he refuses to admit he's infatuated but well... you know the rest.

This is a very enjoyable story despite it's briefness. The story is not as fleshed out as Pamela Aidan's Fiztwilliam Darcy, Gentleman chronicles (Mr. Darcy doesn't really tell us what he was up to when he wasn't with Elizabeth) but it hardly matters. The writing is good, especially the foreward which sounds nineteenth century. The dialogue is mostly taken from Pride and Prejudice and summarized with the rest of the text being Mr. Darcy's private thoughts. It's very sweet when he falls in love and especially once he fears he has lost his chance. I like the way he sees Elizabeth and how he comes to value her friendship above all else. Another thing I especially liked about this book was that we get to see Mr. Darcy interact with his servants and tenants. That makes this book very different from the usual variations and Regency novels. It shows the reader what kind of man he is and makes me love him even more. It also makes the plot more realistic than any of the other Regency set novels or Jane Austen variations I've ever read and even more realistic than the original. There are a few misspellings and typos which really bothered me and prevent me from giving the book 4 stars on Amazon. I'd say this is a 3 3/4 star book and a must-read for Mr. Darcy lovers. (Except those who only love Colin Firth in the pond .... there's no pond in this book). Overall, an enjoyable quick read.

A delightfully quick read that felt perfectly "right." Darcy's internal conversations were "spot on" and so entertaining when they spilled over into unnatural conversation with and/or about Elizabeth! I thoroughly enjoyed this novella.

A number of times, I found myself thinking, "Mr. Darcy wouldn't really have thought that." However, a very interesting and entertaining perspective. Honestly, this probably wouldn't have been half as good had it been novel-length.

Short account from Mr Darcy's Pov

This is very well done short retelling of p& p as seen through Mr Darcy's eyes. Great little Fan fiction tale to elaborate on an iconic character from one beloved book. Worth the read.

One of the few P&P companion pieces which seems to add to the original and not detract from it. The epilogue is a bit odd. Still, I really enjoyed the piece as a whole.

Maybe it was my mood, but I found this short book very tedious. Darcy came across as a complete moron who barely paid attention to what went on around him. Not likely.

I like this book. It is a new point of view of the story of P&P.Darcy told the story to the author that tells it to us. It is a good one, with new perspectives.
