The first translation of "The Countess von Rudolstadt" in more than a century brings to contemporary readers one of George Sand's most ambitious and engaging novels, hailed by many scholars of French literature as her masterpiece. Consuelo, or the Countess von Rudolstadt, born the penniless daughter of a Spanish gypsy, is transformed into an opera star by the great maestro Porpora. Her peregrinations throughout Europe (especially Vienna, Berlin, and the Bohemian forest), become a quest undertaken on a number of levels: as a singer, as a woman, and as an unwilling subject of alienation and oppression.Sand's heroine moves through a mid-eighteenth-century Europe where absolute rulers mingle with Enlightenment philosophers and gender-bending members of secret societies plot moral and political revolution. As the old order breaks down, she undergoes a series of grueling initiations into radically redefined notions of marriage and social organization. In a novel by equal measures philosophical and lurid, nothing is what it seems. Written some fifty years after the French Revolution, the book taps into many of the political and religious currents that contributed to that social upheaval--and aims to channel their potential for future change.Fed by Sand's rich imagination and bold aspirations for social reform, "The Countess von Rudolstadt" is a sinuous novel of initiation, continuing the coming of age tale of the titular heroine of Sand's earlier "Consuelo" and drawing on such diverse models as Ann Radcliffe's Gothic tales and Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister."

George Sand

Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin de Francueil, best known by her pen name George Sand, was a French novelist, memoirist and journalist. One of the most popular writers in Europe in her lifetime, being more renowned than either Victor Hugo or Honoré de Balzac in England in the 1830s and 1840s, Sand is recognised as one of the most notable writers of the European Romantic era. She wrote more than 50 volumes of various works to her credit, including tales, plays and political texts, alongside her 70 novels.
Like her great-grandmother, Louise Dupin, whom she admired, George Sand advocated for women's rights and passion, criticized the institution of marriage, and fought against the prejudices of a conservative society. She was considered scandalous because of her turbulent love life, her adoption of masculine clothing, and her masculine pseudonym.

Sand-philosopher, Sand-revolutionary.
A different type of story compared to the first one, still deeply moving one.

Finally a romance story, finally our virgin Consuelo falls in love, deeply, passionately, carnally. The love triangle that is so clearly not a triangle to anyone except her.

And then there's Sand, ruthlessly critical of the marriage and woman's place in it, advocating for the union of equals; Sand condemning oppression of the organized religions; Sand championing the enlightenment and republicanism.

We end the story somewhere around 1775 and with France as a new beacon of hope for values of freedom and brotherhood of people. And that epilogue. That gorgeous bitter-sweet ending. Sand, just wow.

As a continuation of Consuelo, the book seemed more intriguing and serious, with some mysterious motives than the first book. I actually enjoyed reading it more than the previous one.
Sometimes the author was goingtoo far from the main plot line, the divertions seemed overwhelming at times. But the book was much more mature and serious (it touched upon several political and religious issues) and provided me with a great spectrum of Goeroge's century and its atmosphere.

This is the conclusion of Sand's operatic, dramatic music, mystical novel Consuelo where our heroine after an ill fated marriage finds herself at the Prussian court being the centre of intrigue and being courted by a very mysterious character.

Less than the original but still quite good even if it has more mystic undertones and political intrigues than the original.

Magnificent. That's all you really need to know. Well, that and this is the sequel to the even more magnificent Consuelo. (Technically, I suppose I should note 'tis said both make up the one, giant novel, Consuelo.) Liberty! Fraternity! Equality!

I loved Consuelo, to which I would give 5 stars, so I went on to read Rudolstadt and was disappointed. The former is wonderfully 'operatic', wandering where it wants, with delightful changes of scene and sub-genre, while Rudolstadt lacks this imaginative freedom. No more the praise of the open road and the bohemian life, but long stays in a royal court, a prison and a voluntary prison awaiting initiation to a mystical society of 'illuminati'. There are long. long discourses of a philosophic nature about society, women's role, freedom from tyranny etc., which might have some intrinsic interest, but with 600 pages to read I admit to sliding quickly over.
Read Consuelo, it's one of the great nineteenth-century novels, but don't feel obliged to read Rudolstadt.

I read this just to read something in French, although it was in my to-read list and I was going to tackle it in English. It ended up being the first book I've read in French and I quite enjoyed it (and understood it, which is more exciting).

It's a typical cloak-and-dagger 19th century romance, with a nice pinch of historical facts thrown in, as it depicts Frederick II, the enlightened despot of Prussia, and a heavy dose of Illuminati/Freemasonry.

I saw the ending coming 200 miles away but it was still entertaining.

Too many details, quite long descriptions...typically for the books of 19 century, that makes reading not joyfull.
About the story: mix of story about secret society with all odeas, rules, facts and very romantic love story with knight and a lady

I guess this was well written but I did not enjoy reading it. Too much idle dialog of little interest to me. A 19 century womans book.
