An earring, a murder, a legend...

Katherine St. Claire has never forgotten the passionate night she shared with a stranger while staying at a castle hotel called Duncreag. He even haunts her dreams. Tired of loving "Fantasy Man", as her brother Jeff refers to him, she decides to go back to Duncreag in search, literally, of the man of her dreams.

Iain Mackintosh wears the cairngorm earring of the only woman he will ever love. Eight long years ago she came to him in the night like a vision. News of his father's death brings Iain home to Duncreag where he finds himself questioning the circumstances surrounding his father's demise and wishing for the woman his cousin Ranald is convinced is a fairy.

Iain and Katherine arrive at Duncreag each longing to find the other. There is however a seemingly insurmountable problem. A five hundred and thirty-year barrier separates them. What follows is the story of a love so powerful it crosses the boundaries of time. Complicated by murder and abduction in the fifteenth century their love will be tested even after they finally reunite. Only Jeff's twentieth century discovery of events from the past can save them.

I am a big fan of time travel stories. I have read many. This book was on sale, and it was a time travel story, so I thought, "Why not?" Well, after reading it, I will offer a few reason "why not".

If you are going to do a time travel story successfully, you can go one of 2 ways -

1. Scientific - With the use of actual scientific knowledge and scientific speculation, the author creates a plausible explanation for the time travel. (The Time Machine, The Butterfly Effect, etc.)

2. Mystical - The reality of time travel is explained by purely supernatural means. The time travel is precipitated by magic, a spell, a talisman, etc. (ie. Hermoine's necklace, Somewhere in Time, etc.)

In either instance, the author has to address continuity issues. How does traveling to, and changing the past, affect the future? If someone does, or does not die, how does that change things for future generations? If a letter is written in the past, discovered in the future, but then events change, and the letter is never written, did they really discover it, go back and change the past, and thus the future?

This story leaves lots of gaping holes in the fabric of the space/time continuum.

The opening of the book is a romantic, middle of the night, sexual encounter between strangers from different centuries, which results in undying love that is so strong it compels the 2 strangers to travel through time, risk life and limb, etc, etc. Would any human beings, that have ever lived, really do that for someone they have never spoken to? No names, no conversation at all? Really? Really? True love with no talking? Maybe Dee Davis is a man ..... It's harder to believe than the time travel - seriously!

There was violence, but not super graphic, there were no swear words, but there were rather descriptive sexual encounters that were tiresome, and added nothing to the plot, other than the first chapter which set the whole thing in motion ... Reading the same turns of phrase over and over again, no matter how dramatic they might have sounded the first time they were written, was boring.

At the end of the book there was a sneak peak at the next in the series. I'm not interested. Yes, it was that bad.

Right from the beginning I had a bad feeling about this book, the way it starts is just so unbelievable and clearly spells out what a disaster the rest of the book will be. I must be a glutton for punishment for making myself finish this, I still don’t quite know how I did it. I love time travel romances but this one just falls so short of the mark!

I've had this book on my to-read list since May 23, 2018 (the original edition), and I'm so happy I finally bought it (along with other paperbacks) in July 2024 and read it. I started the book on the couch in my friend's Airbnb in St. Martin (the Caribbean).

I loved the subtle humor, the late 1990s references (Hilton is still very prominent!), the romance, and the plot. The plot was my favorite part of the novel. The villain was obvious, but everything else was mysterious. This book elicited tears at least twice. Davis kept the climax building. Every time you thought Katherine would be saved, there was another obstacle. Davis kept me guessing.

On the other hand, I wished the romance between Katherine & Iain was a little more developed from the start. It had a touch of instant love. Even though I understood these two were soulmates, I didn't fall instantly in love with the guy I love now... (Though I felt a close connection to him and immediately developed a big crush on him, I hardly knew anything about him...)

Some careless typos could have been caught with another round with a proofreader, especially since this book is a reissue of a traditionally published book. This book is older than me, lol.

That being said, this was a fantastic debut and I would love to read more by Dee Davis!

I struggled a bit with the story and maybe by the end of my review I have a solution to my dilemma.

So, i love time travel stories and if there's some romance thrown in the mix even better. The book had just that and I enjoyed it a lot.
Iain and Katrine's love seemed suspended/ list in space. They found each other when they were young and they couldn't forget their encounter.
Years later Iain is still pinning for his "dream" girl and is faced with becoming a Laird and maybe take a wife.
Katrine is missing Iain and wants to find him again so she goes back to Scotland to the castle where they first met.

From here on, their love and some magic earrings help them find each other to be separated soon by outside forces and ambitions.

The book has a very interesting idea and without doubt time travel has my undivided interest.
My grievances with the story are more in the lines of the delivery:
Iain and Katrine spent little to no time together. I wanted more of their reunion, marriage and daily life before the villain made his presence felt.
I felt that a lot of the events were just passed by when I wanted more.
The end did not satisfy my thirst for more. Besides the sex that seem to be the norm for Iain and Katrine I wanted something else. From the prologue I wanted more and till the end it didn't happen.

I was not bothered by the lack of credibility or lack of technical, valid arguments for the time travel to happen. In the end who knows how it can happen and why? So I took the story as it came. I guess the lack of character development bothered me more.

The story could have been so much better. I am not talking Outlander details here but somewhere in the middle.
I hope the other books will get a more well built story.
If you like time travel, well, you cannot miss this one because there are not so many on the market.

This was a very interesting book. The first half I though was ok and was good, but then surprises, action, adventure and romance. I loved the 2nd half of book. I couldn't put it down. Don't want to give anything away so I won't go into any details. Good read. I was alittle disappointed in that Iain's character was alittle weak and he didn't seem like a very macho laird. That is why I dropped a star.

It was only one night, now almost just a dream, with few tangibles but a cairngorm earring and a feeling of lingering love and desire. It was only a one night stand but its essence lingers on them both for years; promising more, promising everything.
Katherine St Claire was on a vacation in the Scottish Highlands. The once proud Castle of Duncreag is now an inn, offering old world charms from five-hundred years earlier. She fell into an exhausted sleep after an eventful day and woke, sometime in the night. Even in the dark glum of the night she noticed that all wasn’t what it had once been; everything seemed somehow older, much older. Exploring this changed room; she finds a mysterious door and opens it. In the murky darkness, she spies a bed and a movement upon it startles her. Out of the gloom arises a male form that slowly comes into full focus as he approaches. As Katharine stares at Iain Mackintosh, all fear fades and only a lustful love remains. Without a thought, their love is consummated in a night full of bliss. At dawn, she returns to her room and soon discovers that she is back in the present and Iain a mere memory.

Over the next eight years, Katherine and Iain continually bounce against the fabric of time and the sheer material of it keep them from truly uniting them. Tired of living a dream, Katherine returns to the Scottish Highlands to the castle along the river Findhorn in hopes of repeating the past. A myriad of characters and plots keep the reader enthralled with a story that scampers through time. Medieval Scotland is brought to life and
Ever since Diana Gabaldon wrote the Outlander series, time travel, and the Scottish Highlands have become a favorite topic for aspiring writers to write about and undying romantics to read about. Although the catalyst remains a mystery, the portal is soon discovered.
One of the attractive parts of the Outland series is the ability of the author to create deep and complete characters. Another one is her ability to push the time travel into the back and creating historical novels of a rare and elite quality; inspiring both readers and writers. This tale, however, never really releases the time travel element but instead builds around it. The characters are vividly portrayed and their plights keep the readers awed. The centuries fall away as you are transported five hundred in the past.

I really enjoyed this book and congratulate the author on a story well told. The characters were all strong, believable people that you would meet in real life and they jumped off the page to become my friends. The story rolled along nicely and you could really feel the intensity of the love between Katherine and Iain as well as the strong family bond between Katherine and her brother Jeff.

The only frustration for me was how easily Iain believed her when she confessed she came from 500 years in the future. However, I managed to push that aside as I travelled their journey with them and was so sorry when that journey came to an end.

I found that I have been thinking of the story and the characters since finishing the book and know that this will be one book that I revisit from time to time.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves the whole idea of time travel, the Scottish Highlands and a good romance with a twist of mystery thrown in.

This isn't the greatest. The story is a bit slow in spots, and the characters are so dense at times that I found myself secretly fantasizing about them all being killed...

But I'm a sucker for time travel romance, so I enjoyed it.

Wow, what an amazing story of undying love.
What Ian and Katherine went through is nearly beyond imagination.
They are soulmates, separated by hundreds of years, they have such a chemistry they have instant-recognition of who they are for each other, but unable at first to comprehend who is who and when.
They will stay apart for years until Katherine decides it might be time to say goodbye to her dreams lover.
For this, she goes back to where everything began, in Scotland, where the man of her dreams seems to be from, and the closer she is, the more she dreams, the more her dreams look like real.
Until the day she is really back in his arms.
Then everything around them turns to chaos. They will have to face lies, betrayals, murders ...
I loved both characters, they never doubted of each other, nor about their love or existence, ready to give up everything to be sure the other will be safe or to be together.
Katherine is no warrior’s girl but she will do the most with the few she has, ready to leave her easy 20th century life behind, believing in faith and what life will throw on her way.
Ian is not the ruthless laird we could have expected during these harsh times, he is companionate and cares for those whose the live depends on him. And once he sets his eyes on Katherine, she will be his one and only love.
This is one of those stories that left you on the edges, eager to read more and afraid of it too, it brings heartaches of what they suffered and had to face.
I was not bothered the first third of the book was about their life in their own time, showing us who they are really and the decisions they will have to take.
It is a great book about a love who can’t be denied even if time interferes between them.

Everything in its Time reminded me a lot of Outlander (which is one of my favorite romances ever!). A modern day girl, Katherine St. Claire, manages to go back in time to the 15th century and sleep with a sexy Scottish Laird named Ian. She and he both think it’s a dream, but feel incredibly lost without each other. For eight years they live separately in their own centuries, until Katherine decides it’s time to see if that dream might be a reality. When things don’t turn out exactly as she planned, her brother Jeff jumps back in time to save her. Will Katherine be saved? Will Jeff ever be rejoined with his lover?

Everything in its Time is extremely suspenseful. There are abductions, battles, time traveling, betrayals, TWO love stories. I was flipping pages like a maniac (well, touching the right side of my Kindle screen like a maniac). This is a thoroughly entertaining read, but if you’ve read a lot of time travel or if your sick of it, this may not be the best book for you. Also, word to the wise, the prologue is really just a sex scene :)

Katherine St Claire spent the night with the man of her dreams years ago while vacationing in Scotland but he was gone the next morning. She's spent eight years trying to convince herself it wasn't real but is having dreams that feature this man so she returns to Scotland and the castle hotel, Duncreag, where everything started.

In 15th century Scotland, Iain Mackintosh remembers the night when he gave his heart to a mystery woman who was gone the following morning. He's spent the last eight years looking for her. When he begins seeing her but is unable to reach her he knows she's close. When hi father dies, Iain returns to Duncreag after being gone for years. It is there that his woman reappears and they seem to have their chance at happiness; however, not everyone is happy for them and there's someone working against Iain.

Listened to the audiobook....narration was okay, but not great. It was hard to get used to a male narrator doing the female voices. Plot was predictable, but not bad.

The book simply borders on yay or nay.

The main pair:
Iian and Katherine. They started really good, I must admit. An unplanned time-travelling one-night stand in an old scottish castle turns out to be an obsession for Iian and Kat for the next 8(!) years. And here we go with all the weird timing by Dee Davis... First, why 8 years?........ God knows that's a long time. Even a year is more than enough to get over someone OR decide you desperately need this person in your life. Ok, maybe 2, max 3, but 8?.. Ok Kat didn't know if he were real, then she didn't know how to get to him... Where's the struggle? Any previous attempts to get back to the castle to figure it all out? Anything? No, she just waited 8 years in doubt and then decided she's really into the man of her dreams and finally(!) guessed there must be something special about the castle (like it wasn't obv). Oh, Lord.
I also simply can't leave without a comment the fact that after finally getting to each other they simply sleep again instead of talking at least A BIT (for example, introducing to each other might do), which any person with thousands of questions would do first before getting in the pants, no matter how tempting those pants are.

The plot:
I really don't like when the villain is obvious, but main characters don't get it. There are some situations that require double check, but motives of the main villain in THIS book were clear from the start for everyone except the book characters.
90% of the book the main pair is NOT TOGETHER. Bummer. They either don't know if they're real or they try to get to each other or investigating smth or fighting someone 🫠

Overall thoughts:
In general, I think this book could have been so much better if not for some serious plot mistakes and time gaps. Also, a relationship depth will do no harm.
I love the aura about the castle Duncreag, I loved brother Jeff - so there are some lovely parts about this book, just not enough.

There are more books in the series, but unfortunately I don't feel invested to read them (though i do find the vintage-style covers charming).

Rate: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (2/5)

I absolutely love time travel romances. The idea that a person would travel through time to meet their destiny is just too good not to enjoy. That being said, I'd like to say that I loved this book. I'd like to say that... but I can't. For me, it was just meh. First off, it jumps right into the time travel aspect. I actually had to go back because I thought I somehow missed a chapter or something. But no... it really begins in a time travel sequence.

There are certain things I really despise in books and chief among them is when relationships are not equal or even. In this case, she has spent 8 years dreaming about her dream lover, it is implied, to the exception of any other man. Yet he readily admits to having dalliances with other women during those 8 years even though he refuses to marry because he is in love with what they keep referring to as a faery. So obviously she was already more invested in the relationship than he was.

I will never claim to be an astrophysicist or whatever scientist studies to remote possibility of time travel, however, some of the plot holes were so big you could drive a semi through them. This is not to say that the characters were completely unredeemable or that I hated it. Far from it. I found myself enjoying it to a degree. I enjoyed it enough that I did finish the entire book. I'm just not sure I enjoyed it enough to read any other books in the series. I guess we'll see.

I ALMOST gave up on this book and I aDOOORe time travel romance, but less than ten pages in began the most ridiculous premise I can remember ever reading and I couldn’t continue on for a while with all my eye rolling. Full on cringe-worthy. I mean, are you kidding me? She’s in a hotel and wakes in the middle of the night looking for the bathroom but fails to even try to turn on any lights, stumbles into the next room where there’s a naked guy in a bed whom she proceeds to allow to pull her in with him, (guess she didn’t have to pee THAT badly), strip her down, have sex with her virgin self and then goes on back to her room where they both wake up the next day completely in soulmate-land LOVE with each other but now she’s back in her time and he remains in his? I mean, what the actual f*k?!? (Insert more eye rolling here………….)

That being said, however, I’m really happy that I reluctantly continued on bc it got sooooo much better! Really, surprisingly, a LOT better, and it ended up being a really entertaining book! Enough so that I plan on giving the next book in the series a go. So, if you’re a fan of this genre, try your best to stick with it past the cringy beginning and I think you’ll be as pleasantly surprised as I was!

Starting this book, I really couldn't get into it, how fast they fell in love - they hadn't even spoken 2 words just slept together - was a little unrealistic. The time travel aspect I love though. Unfortunately, I had chosen audio book and the reader just didn't do it for me... I'm Scottish and his attempt at a Scottish accent was almost insulting - ha.. It definitely was not Scottish.

As the book progressed there was many partes I liked and loved, the amount of times she traveled to and fro (past to present) was a little downer for the book as its supposed to be a fantasy like a blip in time a dramatic turn of events but Katrine just went from century to century like she was walking in and out the front door lol.
I enjoyed the twists and the big rescue. I'm glad they end up together but I didn't really like the part where Katrine is basically lying in some sort of coma for a week and unable to get back to herself as in all other parts of the story she seemed reletivly strong.
All aside it was a OK read, I'd give it 3/5 stars.

First few pages caught my heart immediately. The writing style amazed me in a way that as if I could hear all the dialogues in my head even until the level of their voices sound might like. The description made me as if I was inside the story, watching.

The best feeling is I could feel their love right inside my heart. The tingling, the giddy and even the passion of their love seemed so real for me.

I didn't put much hope for this book at first. It had been awhile I couldn't find a book that made me feel like this.

The moment I reached the end, I wish the ending was extended a bit. Maybe more explanation on how Katherine was healed. Or what happened to both of them afterwards.

Though the past, present and future seemed intertwined in a messy kind which was like a time travel paradox, the anticipation on how to change their fate hooked me up until the end.

This is a time travel book you are not likely to forget! Katherine and Iain are meant to be together. There is one small problem--Katherine lives in the present time--Iain lives in the 15th century!! They meet one fateful night in a Scottish castle--and that is all they have--one night. Katherine leaves behind one earring--all that proves to Iain that he was not dreaming. Neither forgets the other and then Katherine decides to try to make it back across the time barrier.

There are twists and turns and several ways this book could end--I was very happy that it ended the way it did.

Who hasn't wished that they could travel in time? To be able to meet important historical figures ... to witness life-changing events ... to change the course of history ... or to find love - even 500 years earlier!! If you have imagined this fantasy, then you need to read this novel. It's a story of true love and the sacrifices that we are willing to make to find and keep it. But, as often is the tale, love is never easy and there are forces here that want everything to remain the same as before, and will do anything and everything in their power to keep you from your happiness! What would YOU do? I LOVED this story ... the characters, the story line and the way it all came together. I hope you enjoy it too!

Mystery and adventure

That was quite the wild ride. The first chapter almost made me put the book down after the Insta love and I hoped it wouldn't be just a sex driven book. Much to my surprise there is much more substance to the story that drew me in. It is filled with mystery and some action, terrible people, death, fighting, but most of all a soul deep love to hold onto even after trauma. Time travel adventures are fun, but not always safe for women. Brother's are pretty great, daring and able to do what he needs to do to save his sister, loved Jeff. Full novel, no cliffhanger and a happily ever after.

Katherine St. CLaire finds love in the arms of a stranger, but no ordinary man, a 15th century chieftain in Scotland while she's on vacation. Only trouble is their night of passion is short-lived and both she and the chieftain, Iain Mackintosh, cannot stand to be without one another and fear they will never have the chance to reunite. Fate lends a hand in the form of a pair of special earrings and a special place in an old castle.

Filled with passionate scenes, action, and believable fantasy elements, this is a book you won't want to put down until the very end. Great!

This was the first time travel I picked up after a long hiatus from reading. I'm so glad it did not disappoint, made me remember why I loved the genre previously too. Loved the characters and also the heroine's brother. I liked their sureness of their love for each other and that they each had loved ones who believed them instead of doubting or mocking them when they described their first time travel encounter. All the characters loved deeply and could make hard decisions or leaps of faith when needed. Also loving the description of Scotland, makes me want to visit Scotland again.

Good time travel romance

This is a good time travel romance, with a likable couple. There were a few things that weren't fully explained -- like how the time travel happened, and what happened when her brother discovered she had left their century the last time. But for the most part, it was a good story, which held my interest. I did enjoy it, but haven't decided yet of I will continue the series, since all the books appear to be standalones.

I liked this story, it was fine. The part I didn’t like and still bothers me is after a bad ordeal the woman withdraws into herself and locks herself in her own mind. So she’s like not fully there to everyone else. She sleeps, has to be fed, that’s about it. The author described her as an autistic-like state. I’m sorry but what!? An autistic like state, what is that suppose to even mean? I’m not sure if she meant to use a different word, but the there was nothing autistic-like about the woman.
