Tę książkę czytałam jako dziecko dobre osiem razy, w tym *co najmniej* raz mojej młodszej siostrze - na nas obu musiała zresztą zrobić wrażenie, skoro rzeczonej siostrze do dziś zapadła w pamięć najmniej popularna historia w zbiorze (Kapitan Mord). Przyznam szczerze, że aż do powrotu do tej pozycji jako dorosła, nie zdawałam sobie sprawy, ile informacji nt. literatury, które wydawały mi się wiedzą powszechną w przeszłości, a nimi zdecydowanie nie były, wzięłam właśnie stąd. Zdecydowanie ścisła czołówka serii, udowadniająca, że dzieci najlepiej się edukuje nie tylko poprzez zabawę, ale i nietraktowanie ich jak mniej inteligentnych form życia.

Me compré este libro con 12 años, en un viaje con mi familia (probablemente el que inauguró mi tradición de comprarme libros como souvenirs de todos los lugares que visito). Creo que mi yo de 12 años fue incapaz de resistirse a una portada tan graciosa que al mismo tiempo clamaba contener los mejores relatos de terror, "los que dan auténtico miedo". Sea como fuere, este libro se convirtió en mi guía, en una especie de manual de referencia del terror para niños. Cada uno de los capítulos estaba dedicado a un relato o leyenda que aparecía de forma resumida o reformulada: algunos en forma de cómic, de entrevista con los personajes, como si fuese un consultorio de televisión, una receta de cocina.. todo muy divertido. Además, cada sección incluía un anexo relacionado con la temática del relato en cuestión en el que se ofrecía información adicional, como un Top 10 de los monstruos más famosos, listas de fobias peculiares, biografías de los autores, curiosidades, etc. Visto hoy en día, el libro es bastante chorrada, pero consiguió despertar mi curiosidad y descubrirme autores que desconocía o de los que sabía muy poco, como Lovecraft, Poe, Mary Shelley o W. W. Jacobs y por eso le tengo tanto cariño.

Another book I loved as a kid. Michael Cox’s research and knowledge of the genre is incredible, his depth of field taking in horror short stories and obscure films as well as the classic novels like Dracula and Frankenstein. One can quibble with the placement of Frankenstein at #3 (whereas it should be #1) but this is an incredible book and a great introduction to a truly great genre. His insert of Lovecraft at #2 is the thing a true nerdy horror fan would do and I love him for it; it’s very hard to introduce Lovecraft to children but Cox pulls it off.

A very interesting read. I had read this many years ago when I was in middle school and I remember being glued to it throughout out the nights. The author does a stellar job in turning horror into light hearted parodies.I would recommend it for children in their early teens who are interested in amusing and soft comedies.

Rediscovered this. Entertaining and informative run down of the top horror tales ranging from 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' to 'Dracula'. Great introduction tod classic horror, that might, just might, drag some from Twishite and to much better gothic nasties...
