A self-professed lab geek, Claire doesn’t date much. In fact, she has more contact with the rats at the lab than with human males, not counting her toadlike boss, Gordon. When her coworkers drag her out to a club, Claire ends up fending off her drunk and handsy boss—until she’s rescued by Ed, the most beautiful bouncer she’s ever seen.
Her tentative, exhilarating relationship with Ed is interrupted when she learns her boss intends to falsify research data to win a grant. When Claire threatens to reveal the truth, she endangers her life, as well as Ed’s. Framed and forced to run, it’s not long before Claire discovers Ed is hiding a shocking secret of his own.
Through arson, police chases and attempted murder, the two grow closer, the intensity of their lovemaking rivaling that of their harrowing journey. Claire would be worried about the ever-present danger and a grim future as a fugitive…if she weren’t so engrossed in her erotic experiments with Ed.

What a happy surprise this book turned out to be!! It was a totally random purchase and I absolutely fell in love with it. (Obviously, judging it by the 5 stars I gave it!)
It starts off with Claire at a bar with her boss and coworkers - celebrating a grant that their research team was due to receive. Claire’s boss, a pube-faced toad of a man that had the hots for her, had finally pushed her a little too far. So far that a bouncer stepped in to make sure Claire was OK. The bouncer was Edward Astor. Ed for short. And he was just about the most handsome man that Claire had ever laid eyes on.
After the little issue with her boss - and Ed intervening on her part - Claire decides to walk home. Ed, being a gentleman and a tough guy, doesn’t want her walking five blocks, alone, at night. So, he takes a break and walks her home. I was hoping for some hot monkey sex at this point, but it didn’t happen. But I was pretty sure it was coming, eventually.
The next day, Ed is waiting for Claire.....to walk with her to work. Some might view this as creepy and stalker-ish, but I didn’t. I thought it was sweet. It’s pretty obvious from the beginning that Ed is a little different, but he never comes across as creepy. Socially awkward and a little shy, maybe. But never creepy. So anyway - he walks her to work and they’re the first ones there so she brings him in and shows him around the lab where she works. Ed is a little freaked out - he doesn’t like labs or doctors - but Claire keeps the mood light and even introduces him to her favorite test subject.....a lab rat named Wilma. There’s also a hot make-out session in the supply closet before the rest of Claire’s coworkers get to work. (YUMMY!) And while Claire’s day started out good, it goes downhill from there. She gets fired because she refused to support her boss when he told her he was planning to falsify data in order to secure the grant money. And it only gets crazier from there. (And I mean crazy in a good way. Like, crazy as in action packed.) Claire almost gets killed twice, there’s a fire, some car chases, some motorcycle chases, and a whole lot of crazy hot monkey sex. Good Lord, you will fall in love with Ed. It’s that tortured Alpha-male thing again. That gets me every single time. That, coupled with the fact that Ed is just a big ole teddy bear when it comes to Claire. *Swoon* I mean, really. What’s not to love?
Along the way, we meet Ed’s friend, Darwin, and we also learn a little bit about their past and how they both came to be......different. I won’t spoil it here, but let’s just say that it’s Top Secret / Government / Off The Record type stuff. It explains a lot, but it also opens the door wide open for many more books to come.
Don’t get me wrong, I did have a few issues with this book. The resolution played out a little too easily, a little too neatly. In - out - clean escape - problems solved. But the problem solving didn’t get mentioned except in the epilogue as our couple is driving into the sunset. I would like to have seen all of that played out over the course of a chapter or two, rather than having it mentioned merely as an afterthought. BUT.....I didn’t write it, so I have to respect the author’s choices. But even with that, I still can’t give less than 5 stars because I did love the characters so much.
Ya know, I feel so smug about having found this book. Why smug? Because it was a great story with lots of hot sex, action, and a hero I could really fall in love with - and I discovered it all on my own. It wasn’t a recommendation from anyone. (I know, what am I....a five year old? LOOKIE! I did it all by myself!) And furthermore, I don’t even remember how I found this book to begin with. I think it was an impulse buy on Amazon due to those “customers who bought this book also bought this book." I think. But whatever the reason, I’m so glad I found it.
Experimenting With Ed happens to be the first in a series that will focus on all the men that were “altered”. I know from reading the author’s blog that the next book with focus on Ed’s friend, Darwin. There are 5 men in all, so I can only assume that there will be 5 books in the series. All of the men were assigned letters and when they escaped, they choose their own names. We have Ed, then Darwin....because I’m a genius, I’m guessing the remaining three guys will have names that start with C, then B, and finally A.
3-1/2 stars. I enjoyed this novel with a chatty heroine and a laconic hero. This was a fast paced easy read with the majority of the action happening in about 4 days. In this case that didn't bother me at all. I wasn't really looking for a realistic story and I really enjoyed the interaction between the slightly goofy heroine and the quiet but alpha hero. He had been experimented on and had some unusual but not out of the realm of possibility abilities. There are apparently 4 other guys who escaped from the testing facility with him. I'm looking forward to their stories.
This was well written with no big editing problems. The writing style was easy and accessible. Well done.
This was good, just not great. The outside drama took up most of the book and the couple had very little time to just be. They were almost always on the run. I love a good romantic suspense, but this needed a bit more romance. I liked Ed and Claire. They definitely have chemistry!
This book was the first in a series so it ended in a HFN to be continued in the next book. I will probably read the next book since I do want to know what happens.
This is a very safe book. No cheating or OW/OM issues.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
I have to say that the beginning of this book was a bit odd. Well, not the very beginning, but the first few times we meet Ed I wasn't sure I liked him. He was... well, he was a bit creepy. However, the more we get to know him the more I really liked him. I felt like he had so much that we didn't get to see underneath his tough exterior. He's been through a lot and it's obvious that there is much to come in the series about what him and the other soldiers have been through.
Claire is a bit odd for not completely freaking out on Ed, but then again she is a dork in her own mind and words so it worked for me. She is silly and the complete opposite to the oh-so-serious Ed. It's cute watching her learn little tidbits about Ed and what he can do. Her reactions are awesome and made me love her. She's an oddball and it's always nice to see when an author can pull the silly/sweet/intelligent combination off.
The book is definitely action packed with some cute moments. While we don't necessarily get a ton of background on Claire, there is a reason why we don't with Ed... and it really didn't matter to me. We got to see our characters connect in ways that didn't need to know their past because their present was enough of a connection to forgo it in my opinion.
I can't wait to see where this series goes for sure. There is a lot still to find out about the men and their situation.
Erotic Experiments (Research & Desire #1) by Katie Allen 4 stars M/F Romance Triggers: Sexual Harassment, Attempted Murder, Human Experimentation I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
Claire is a geek. She works hard in a lab, loves her rats and knows right from wrong. So, when her boss becomes a little too handsy after work one night, she gets out of there. Ed comes to her rescue and from then on, they are inseparable.
Ed is a strange character and I had a very difficult time connecting with him. He is blunt, stern, and very unemotional. He sees Claire from afar and just knows that he has to know her. He is intense and despite his demeanor, ends up being kind of a giant teddy bear.
Claire is on the run from her boss and Ed is there, on the run from his own past. You catch a glimpse of his past, but are not really given very many details.
This was action packed and a short read. I wish that we had seen more of a conclusion, but overall, I really enjoyed this story. I can't wait to see what else this series will bring.
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.
The story premise is a good one, but somehow it just fell flat to me. Claire is a shy, nerdy lab assistant who meets Ed, the bouncer at the bar where he boss is trying to sexually harass her. Ed defends Claire and walks her home.
Something about Ed appeals to Claire and she can't stop thinking about him. Then someone tries to run her down with a car and set her apartment on fire. Ed is there for her, like a superhero.
There is a lot of action in just a few days, but we don't learn much about Claire's background, family, friends or Ed's other than he has one friend named Darwin. Perhaps book two will have more answers than questions.
'Experimenting with Ed' is my first Katie Allen book and I found it an entertaining and quick read overall. Although the story was relatively simplistic, Allen has an interesting premise with the former military research subjects of "enhanced" soldiers. With memories of their previous lives wiped, the men have escaped and are are trying to "blend" back into normal life, while staying under the radar to avoid detection.
Our somewhat clueless and naïve heroine Claire catches the attention of "Edward", a bouncer at a local club when her boss makes untoward advances to her. After walking Claire home, Ed takes it upon himself to protect Claire, showing up to walk her to work and back again. Claire takes it all in stride, even though this behavior is a tad on the creepy/stalker side. Still it's evident that he's a sweet, if somewhat socially backwards, guy and when Claire's life is suddenly in jeopardy, Ed is there to protect her. There's lots of steam in this one - even when on the run they manage to find "time" for themselves...
Ed is the real highlight of this book - a real take-charge alpha guy who's quiet, and a bit unsure of himself and his allure - Allen does of good job making him lovable, though I do wish that we could have gotten some of the story from his perspective. If Allen ever gets around to writing stories for the rest of the guys, I plan on checking them out.
I really enjoyed this book. The heroine, aside from one scene where she did something extremely stupid and unrealistic, was great. Finally a scientist heroine who is actually smart and has common sense. She is also comfortable with herself and her strengths and weaknesses, which is a great plus.... finally a confident woman. The hero was such a cutie. And I have a serious weakness for the escaped-lab-rat-hero genre. XD (I made that name up on the fly.)
So yeah, the only cons I can think of are that one scene where the heroine acts completely stupid and does something she really should not have been capable of doing, and the fact that world building is lacking. Maybe the book was too short.
Re-read 13 March 2016 (didn't even realise it's been one year!): I'm tempted to up my review to a 5-star.... it's just so sweet and cute and I love Ed.
Quick entertaining read with a chatty heroine and a hunk of a hero who knows exactly how to shut her up.The ending more of an HFN ,rather than an HEA which I prefer.
Oh, how I adore when a big, strong guy has secrets of the not-normal variety. I also like when said big, strong guy is a little grumpy (sometimes) and when they get tongue-tied around their special someone. Or the someone who might be their special someone. *fluttery fingers that might be mistaken for jazz hands but clearly aren't, thankyouverymuch*
Ed is the big, strong guy in this scenario. He's drawn to Claire from the first time he sees her and steps in when she needs help. Then her world explodes (not literally, but pretty close) and it's a darn good thing he's there to keep her from ending up a statistic on the crime blotter.
Also for the kissing. It a good thing he's there for the kissing. *nods*
I liked that Claire found her footing with Ed. She's smart and kind and his differences might have taken her by surprise, but she recovers quickly. The sexy times could have helped sway her to his side. Well, that and his gentleness with her. It's hard to be afraid of a man who works so hard to keep you safe. Plus, once they steamed up the sheets, she was pretty much ruined for any other guy. Fortunately for everyone involved, that ruination went both ways.
I have to say, I'm looking forward to seeing the others who share Ed's differences fall just as hard as he did.
Erotic Experiments is a suspense romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s an entire story, but not a complete one. I’ll explain. Two characters are featured and they get a happy for now ending. However, many questions remain about the hero's past, enemies and circumstances. The story is more like an episode where things are learned and resolved, but there's a lot more to discover.
If you’ve read and enjoyed Christine Feehan's Ghostwalker series or watched the Jason Bourne movies, Exotic Experiments should be right up your alley.
I received an ARC of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
WOW....I just loved this book. I read it in less than a day. i couldn't but it down. Claire is a computer geek who spends more time with lab rats then people. Claire is out the coworkers and her boos keeps hitting on her but she is saved by Ed the bouncer who is drop dead gorgeous. Claire ends up going on the run with Ed because her ex boss is a dosh bag who wants her to lie and she won't do it. Ed has his own issues that come up. hey steamed up the sheets Claire she is pretty much ruined for any other guy.
This is a fast-paced with lots of drama and suspense. Clare works in a lab and if all possible avoiding contact with other people. When on a rare night out her boss gets a bit handsy and the bouncer, Ed steps in to rescue her. The attraction between them is steamy and soon they find themselves on the run, both with secrets. I liked this entertaining read. The characters have great chemistry and the story held my interest throughout.
5 scientifically enhanced stars for EROTIC EXPERIMENTS!
Claire isn't the partying type, but when she meets bouncer Edward Astor at a club, she can't help but be super glad she went out that night. With moves that would be SOP for a stalker, Ed nonetheless charms her, making her feel cherished and protected. And when someone decides she'd be better off dead, Claire is VERY glad for Ed's super spidey senses that keep showing at just the right time. It's dangerous enough running from the police, accused of a crime she didn't commit, but when she finds out the reason behind Ed's own need to flee, Claire realizes that shit just got REAL for her and her new man.
Wooooah mama, this is one yummy read! I loved every single thing about this book, and I have to say, despite my typical aversion to sci-fi and paranormal reads, this might be in the top 10 of my favorite books of the year thus far! Besides the fun plot, funny dialogue and fast-paced storyline, EROTIC EXPERIMENTS was sexy as hell (the supply closet scene was absolutely delicious…as was the shower scene, the truck scene…they were all hot as hell)!! Ed's strong and silent persona was so opposite to Claire's bubbly and talkative one, but it just worked! I'm excited to get Darwin's story in Natural Selection, the next book in Ms. Allen's Research And Desire series!
Bottom Line: No OM/OW or sharing; condom use; no BDSM/kink; no sexual assault; no violence; mild attempted murder.
Thought this series was really good. While each novel can be read as a stand-alone, for better enjoyment I recommend reading in order. Experimenting with Ed MF, Darwin's Natural Selection MM, Chemistry With Calvin MF and sadly the last book Double Dose MFM. (A fifth book? I for one am hoping). All five of the 'leading' male characters plus their counterparts were great, very likable. The interaction between the characters was often humourous and throw in a mild sprinkle of suspense with bad guys rounded the storylines nicely. Heat and 'hell yeah sex' in all the novels.
My first book by Katie Allen, it was good story line. Claire is a lab geek who runs into Ed the bouncer at a club while trying to escape her boss. Ed is serious from the beginning and its hard to get read on him. It slowly unfolds into a Beauty and The Beast TV show theory to me.
Ummm... I don't really know. It was short and fun and wild but there was only one POV which isn't my fav so it felt like there wasn't a ton of the male lead. It was fast and fun though!
Synopsis: Claire works at a lab and doesn't have much contact with humans, let alone men. When she goes out with her co-workers one night and is rescued from her drunk boss by the best looking guy that she's seen, Claire is blown away that a guy like that would notice her. But notice her, he does. In fact, he follows her home to see her to safety. When Claire goes back to the club to try and find him, since she didn't get his name, Ed takes her home again. The next morning, Claire finds out that her boss is going to falsify data so that he can get some grant money, and she threatens to turn him in. That's when things go all topsy-turvy. Because suddenly Claire is being framed for all manner of things, and people are trying to kill her...and there are explosions. It turns out that Ed may not be quite as he appears, too. Claire and Ed go on the run after escaping from the police, and Ed calls one of his buddies to help them out. Claire is bound and determined to clear her name and Ed's, so they all work on trying to figure out a way.
What I liked: the premise. Claire was mostly a strong, independent woman, who wanted to do the right thing.
What I didn't like: There was so much happening. And, leaving out Ed and his buddies, everything was so highly improbable. Claire's boss just happened to have a frame plan in place? And everyone fell for it, even people who had worked with Claire for years? The police didn't come across as too bright, since they didn't do much investigating, just followed where they were led.
I received a copy from Net Galley for an honest review. A fast-paced drama and suspense story. Our heroine, Clare, is a lab geek takes pains to avoid all contact with other people. On the occasion of a rare night out she runs into issues with her boss who turns touchy feely. The bouncer, Ed, has scoped out Clare from afar and has already come to the conclusion that he needs her but he is a bit of an odd character. The perfect opportunity to 'meet' Clare when he sees the boss making Clare so uncomfortable, so he's off to rescue her. The attraction between them is sizzling and in a bit of a surprise move they soon find that they are one the run. Being privy to their individual secrets and knowing the other is not, makes helps this entertaining read keep the reader's attention. The chemistry between the characters and the backstory kept me interested..
So... maybe not entirely fair of me as I was already annoyed and in a bad mood, picking this up after the Callaway - and I want to say I read the previous iteration of this book - but I DNF'd 5% in - even though there was a lot of promise and I was DEFINITELY interested in the bouncer [hero?] - ANYWAY - I quit when she's all "no but I have a whistle!" as if that's ... like a magical crime stopping thing. It just ... was conveyed in a way that made her so brain meltingly stupid especially when her boss had already been physically accosting her, there are drunk and rowdy dudes all over, it's the dead of night, she has no ride, AND THE GUY HAS OFFERED TO WALK HER HOME. [Although ok yes he's a stranger and stranger danger - BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HER CONCERN IS. She's all "but whistle!" ... 🤦🏻♀️]
... I might come back to this but for now... *shakes head*
I'll start saying that the books was a nice read! But I have a small complaint: to me the ending seemed like no ending at all! But, since this is the first book in a series, I think that I would have done better and waited for the next book to be pubblished and then read them all together. That way I would have liked it better. Anyhow, the h/H were both very nice and I liked the dialogue and interactions. The story was intiguing and I would have liked more of the history.
Apparently I read this. Twice. (2017 & 2020) Review written 2022
But I barely remember anything about it. I'm not a fan of this author. The writing is mediocre. The stories have no depth and few details. What little I can remember is that it's short, rushed, and not satisfying as a romance.
