A sexy new adventure-packed romance with a paranormal twist-from the award-winning author. Archeologist Emma Zale sees the past when she touches relics. It's how she uncovered evidence of an ancient order of assassins-the Sicari. 4 stars – Paranormal Romance

This had all the makings of a 5 star read: a hot, studtastic cover, an intriguing, unique story, fascinating world-building of the Sicari Order, a sexy, protective hero named Ares DeLuca, exotic locations, exciting archaeology, a good dose of action, adventure, and kick-ass sword-fighting, and steamy romance, but there was one major, annoying flaw that made me lower my rating: the heroine, Emma Zale.

She’s one of the most exasperating, whiny, b*tchy, argumentative, wishy-washy, petulant, emasculating, and TSTL heroines of any romance book I’ve read, and she nearly sucked all the life out of the story and almost ruined it for me. Luckily the other aspects of the book were entertaining enough to keep me interested, despite Emma’s like fingernails scraping a chalkboard presence, especially Ares’s sensual Italian/Latin speak and use of telekinesis powers during sex...yowza!

So although I was a little disappointed, mainly because of the infuriating heroine, it’s a good debut read in what looks to be a promising, thrilling new series, and I’ve got high hopes for Lysander’s and Phaedra’s story, Assassin's Heart, next. 4 stars.

Assassin's Honor This is probably the hardest review I've written to date, because this could've been an amazing story. I loved the universe Ms. Burns has created, the story was hot'n'steamy, action-packed (ooh, the sword-fighting), bitter-sweet, tender in all the right moments, angsty...Unfortunately it also had a huge problem. A problem that ruined everything that was good in it, obliterating all the enjoyment I could have gotten by reading it. A problem named Emma Zale. The heroine.

I know there aren't many heroines out there that I like, but Emma was in that small group of heroines I positively hate. That small club of heroines that should be killed in the first or second chapter to make space for someone more reasonable...And I freely admit I wished Ares left her to die in that alley and simply moved on. Alas, it didn't happen.

Emma was selfish, stubborn to the point of TSTL, judgmental, prejudiced, and she had no idea what she really wanted. Ares just didn't do anything right. If he kept quiet she got mad, if he told her everything she got mad, if he lied she got mad, if he told the truth she got mad and didn't believe him, if he tried to protect her she got mad, if he loved her she got mad, if he got mad she got even madder...Make up your mind, already!

Usually such heroines change their annoying ways somewhere in the middle of the story, once they get used to the new world their hero inhabits, and to all the changes around them. Well, one again Emma was the exception. She was on a roll, baby, and she wasn't stopping.

I usually deter from using denigrating words when it comes to women, but Emma was a bitch of the highest order. And also the first heroine (and I hope the last) that made me develop a headache while reading her book.

In the end all I had left from the promising book was the deep pity I felt for Ares for having ended up with Emma. Poor guy.

I have high hopes for Lysander and Phaedra's story, though. I don't think it could get any worse in the heroine department.

P.S. I won't even delve into the whole linguistics issue, though in a few instances the use of (erroneous) Italian truly bothered me. But, as I mentioned in my update status, maybe it was meant to be as a manner of speaking for the Sicari. It still bugged me, though.

Emma was the most annoying heroine ever. Not only was she whiny and bitchy, but also exasperatingly stubborn. She got angry easily and pretty much ruined every good scene in this book. I loved Ares, though. In fact, I wouldn’t have enjoyed and given it four stars if Ares hadn’t been so deliciously hot. Oh, sweet and caring too which made him all the more endearing. Ares also made me wanna learn Italian. Awesome language, isn't it? I loved it when he used Italian/Latin words, specially during love scenes...yummy.

Anyway, can't wait for Lysander and Phaedra's book, Assassin's Heart:

I was debating myself about reading this, I had read reviews and the synopsis of it, and was unsure as I feel like I've read to many 'damsel's in distress', and tall, dark and drop dead gorgeous (with dark past) coming to the rescue, and them falling on love, having hot and steamy sex sessions, and living happily ever after (in a way), but I picked this book up anyway, and let me tell u it had all that and more (phew!! especially the steamy parts, (inject your fantasy here with Ares), but it also had the defiance in Emma Zale too.
Ares DeLuca, well the name says it all, the God of war, and the dark looks too, I think everyone needs an Ares, I'm waiting for him to find me now, he knows where I am, (I hope my other half doesnt read this lol,(I'll say it's him!! Shhh!).
I got off track, fantasizing, haven't really said anything bout the story, well it was good, I liked it and kept me reading and wanting to know what happened next, the plot was interesting to read, and I hope the next book is just as good or better, if Ares plays a big part then it will be.
Happy Reading!!!! xx

You know that Katy Perry song "Hot N Cold"? That song kept going through my head while reading this book. The heroine is absolutely REDICULOUS!!! "I love him. I hate him! I'm stubborn because I can be! I'm sorry I interfered. I'm not sorry! I wish I never met you. I'm so glad I met you. You've betrayed me! Nevermind, you always put me first." [she's yes and she's no...]

Yeah.

Intensely "WTF".

Which made me wonder what the heck with the dude who follows her around like a lovesick puppy sees in her. yikes.

Which sucks - because the idea of this series, the world building, and the beginning of this book were all so strong. I actually think I'd give this author another chance because the concept, the light paranormal detail, the connection to history, and the scenes in the beginning were all so great...

but the heroine killed all joy of reading. Hopefully she'll go away. I see the next book is focused on other characters, so I have some hope.

What an impressive spicy way to start a new series. Once I started reading this book it made me want to go right out and study Archaeology, just so I could meet my hot Sicari warrior. Oh, did I forget to mention the adventure that comes along with the warrior, well hold on to your seat because this one has an exciting one. With Ares warrior attitude and Emma’s sarcastic charm they keep you enchanted the whole time. I will be vague in this review I hate to give out to much info.

I loved the Sicari characters Monica has created in this book, they are strong warrior men and women. Lysander looks hot from one side of his face but the other side tells a different story. He really charmed his way into my heart in this story, so I really cant wait for his book now. Phae is Ares sister and she has a special power as all Sicari women, she can heal. I really enjoyed reading Phae I hope she will have her own story. I love the powers Monica gave these warriors. Even Emma has a special talent that’s really neat.

Little spoilers
When Emma was at an archaeology dig in Cairo she found her parents had always been right, the Sicari wasn’t a myth. As she tapped another piece of mud off the wall she seen the evidence of a icon that proved the elite guild assassins descendents of Ptolemy’s personal guard was real. Her boss Charlie, ends up dead at the dig and Emma found herself the main suspect after a few hours of questioning at the police station and a little unknown help from Ares, she fond herself back at home in Chicago. Low and behold she fond some items her father has left about the Sicari and while she is reading what her father had left, she heard the floors squeak. She knew she locked the doors, but this man was able to come in with the locks in place. Who is the intruder is he the one that has come back to kill her like Charlie or is it someone else? You’ll have to read and find out what happens to Emma.

Ares is a strong warrior that believes in honor. He does break rules but he takes the Sicari Order’s laws serious. Its so serious as you read you’ll figure out he will do anything to hold up Sicari traditions. Make sure your ready for this ride because you may find yourself with tissues as Ares holds up honor and keeps Emma safe.

The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because, Emma. She got on my nerve in middle of the book. Emma keeps thinking back to her bad relationship and keeps thinking Ares is the same as her ex fiancé
with out really stopping and thinking what all Ares has gone through just to keep her safe. You see at the end the story is not finished, so you’ll be waiting on the next installment to see what’s going to happen next.

When ever I read a PNR, I know that it's going to take at least a few chapters for me to understand the world I'm diving in to. That being said, I don't think I "fully" grasp who the Sicari and Praetorians were and what they were currently doing in today's world. They aren't mortal, but they have powers. They're both searching for the same thing, but the true nature of the item isn't clear to the Sicari, well except the "leader". Don't get me wrong, this was written well enough that I was still drawn to the story line, enough so that it was very difficult to put it down when I had other things that needed to be done. Like family stuff...lol.

Emma is an archaeologists daughter who was murdered five years ago. The significance of her parents death is important because her father was a believer that the Sicari were still alive and very active. While on a dig in Egypt, a colleague is murdered in the same fashion as her parents which has now caused a ripple effect in her life. She's forced to trust a man she literally just met and is asked not to interfere in their culture, but that's just not the kind of woman she is.

Ares is a Sicari Assassin who has been watching Emma and her parents for a while. He is under the assumption that Emma knows where to find the Tyet of Isis, an important artifact that his people need in order to defeat the Preatorians. While trying to discover if Emma actual knew anything about the artifact, the sexual tension he feels when around her has caused him to do things that are against the Sicari way, putting her in even more danger. Now it's up to him to protect his responsibility (Emma) because that's the Sicari way. Or at least that's what he keeps telling himself, over and over again.

Look. Although I wasn't able to completely understand the "background" of who the Sicari and Preatorians are/were, I was very much so able to enjoy this book. It's filled with adventure, drama, magic, lust, love and of course a HEA. What more could you ask for in a PNR?

Oh, there's just one thing......CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!!

**3.5 stars**

The thing that drove me crazy about this book was the constant going back and forth about whether the other person cared for them or not! I don't mind it being done a couple of times especially as new things unfold but it was just a bit too much.

A lot of people complain about Emma being whiney but I found myself feeling that way about Ares...maybe not whiney but definitely not taking charge of the situation and making the same mistakes over and over. I am glad that they finally got their act together.

The other thing that bothered me was not having translations for a lot of the Italian words. Some times I was able to stop and look them up but that was a pain and took away from the story. Even a glossary would have been nice....something!

I am intrigued by the whole Sicari/Praetorian dynamics and think its a good story. I also enjoyed them being able to use their powers.

I definitely will be reading the next book.

This was a really great book. I loved the H/H...Damn Ares was a dominate male who was soo damn stubborn. Which was kinda fun cause Emma was just as stubborn if not sometimes more so. I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought I would. Monica Burns has a wonderful imagination . Loved the world she created. Nice action scenes with tough rules for Ares to follow. Breaking the rules has harsh punishments. That I wasn't expecting. The chemistry between Ares and Emma was intense. Although it seemed that they butt head a lot of the time in the end it was all worth it. Plenty of sexual tension through a lot of the book. Lots of misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

Cant wait for the next one . Phae and Lysander's book should be hot! I can tell in this book they are going to be smokin. Loved Lysander anyway so yeah need to get the next one.

I enjoyed the world but sadly this suffered from horrid heroine syndrome. She was just horrible and thankless. You saved my life, no thanks! I don't know anything about your world, but will still interfere. I mean she just loved to play the woe-me card.

Why I read: Author asked for review.

Favorite Quote - There it was again, that light teasing note that made her go weak at the knees. Not a good thing, but at least he wasn’t kissing her. That would be a disaster. Clothed he was dangerous. Naked he was devastating.

Archaeologist Emma Zale just made a discovery that will validate her father’s claims that an ancient order of people, called Sicari actually exist. Deep within a tomb, she recognizes a symbol of the Sicari and calls on her walkie-talkie to relay this information to her boss and mentor, Charlie. But he doesn’t respond and when Emma finds him at the entrance of the tomb, his throat has been slit and a mark has been carved into his cheek – the same mark that was left on her murdered parents five years previously.

Emma is initially held for questioning, because no one else was seen in the vicinity of the crime scene. As the Cairo police try to blame the murder on her, Emma notices a man in the shadows. He has a silent conversation with the detective and then a coin is placed in front of Emma – a Sicari coin. Emma can’t believe her eyes. Emma has special powers - when she touches ancient relics, she can see images from the past. With one touch to the coin she realizes the man in the shadows is somehow connected to the coin but she can’t place how. After three weeks of investigation, and finally two local people who claim to have seen a man in a monk’s robe leaving the tomb, Emma is set free and returns home to Chicago.

It is here, at her parent’s house where she is still reeling from their death five years ago, that Emma discovers a cipher hidden in her father’s desk that Emma has a feeling has something to do with the Sicari. Before she can fully translate it, that man from the shadows, or Ares Deluca shows up again. What Emma doesn’t know is that Ares is a Sicari – a warrior trained to kill – but only kill to protect the innocent. They assassinate criminals that have escaped the legal system. At first frightened for her life, she soon realizes Ares is there to retrieve information. Ares wants to know where the Tyet of Isis is – an artifact that the Sicari have been looking for 2,000 years. Emma swears she has never heard of it, and Ares realizes she is telling the truth. But now Ares has a big problem. The Praetorian, the Sicari’s evil nemesis, need only Emma to have a stray thought of the Sicari or the Tyet of Isis, and they will pick up on her thoughts and do unbelievable torture to her. Ares can’t let Emma walk around unguarded, which means she is going to have to go back to Ares’ compound.

Emma refuses the idea to accompany Ares, but after an attack by a man in a monk’s robe that night, Ares and Emma flee to his place. It is here where they will start to unravel the mystery surrounding the Tyet of Isis, Emma will learn first hand about the Sicari legend, and an attraction can not be ignored.

Assassin’s Honor is the first book in the Order of the Sicari series and for as many paranormal books that I read, this one really has a different take on things. Ares is not an immortal, but comes from an ancient race of people. A telekinetic that carries around a big sword (well two big swords, if you know what I am saying) and is fiercely loyal to his people. He is a gentleman, lethal, and falls for Emma quite hard. Emma is very leery of Ares at first – she appreciates his pure masculinity, but is he just seducing her to get information out of her? Or is he truly attracted to her? Emma is not stunned to know there are others in the world with powers not totally different from her own, but it is a lot to take in. Ares isn’t always forthcoming with information either, which makes the task of trusting this man, that much harder.

I very much enjoyed these two, and their romance was very hot indeed. Although trust is a big issue, and at times, I think Ares could have come clean much sooner than he did – Emma doesn’t let him get away with it. She is a smart heroine. She also does something that a lot of heroines don’t do. She thanks and appreciates the fact that Ares saved her life. She may not like him nor trust him at some points, but she realizes he stuck her neck out for her and she is grateful.

We also meet Ares’ sister, Phaeandra who is a healer, and Ares’ second in control Lysander. Lysander remains somewhat of a mystery although his deeply scarred face and stoic manner really appealed to me.

This book very much has an adventure feel to it. A complicated treasure hunt, very evil villains who revel in torture, a brotherhood of Sicari warriors, and a hot romance. With many mysteries, not all solved by the end of the book, I really think this series is going to be a good one. Lysander’s story is next, and I can’t wait!

Listen up people, I read Monica Burns' new book Assassin's Honor and fell in love. A Total and complete fall.. Assassin's Honor is book 1 in Ms. Burns' brand new series, The Order of the Sicari.. and it's intense, intelligent and totally unique! Yay for unique!

Archeologist Emma Zale can see the history of an item whenever she touches it. This would seem like a great gift for an archaeologist to have but it's hard on Emma, the history is often violent and dark. It also makes her different and Emma has tried to not use this particular gift often. No matter that her parents and her slimeball ex fiance have encouraged her to do so. She even tried to find another path in life but it seems archaeology is in her blood. When her parents were murderd 5 years ago, Emma was devastated but she struggled on. Now it's her mentor who died in the exact same manner as her parents and this time, the police think she's the murderer. But a mysterious man has come to save her and somehow Emma knows she's safe with him. Or is she?

Ares DeLuca has served his people well. His people? A secret organization that was once the bodyguards of the Ceasars.. only corruption and greed managed to make them hunted as heretics. The Sicari have become the assassin's of the people. Yep, they do what justice can't. Only they are still forced to hide due to the zealousness of their enemies. Ares is the leader of the Chicago area and has given his life to serving them. But when Emma Zale, an outsider, becomes part of his life all of his rules and some say his honor go out the window. All that matters is protecting Emma.

This was absolutely awesome. Seriously intense! Emma and Ares just sizzle when they are together. But it's not always this perfect union, they are human and they screw up. Between the two of them they have to learn what true love is and more importantly how to forgive. Grand gestures are wonderful but they must learn that it's the living day to day that matters.

I can not wait to read the next book in this series! I am all in!

ETA: I had to give up, this is a DNF. I have too many other books on my TBR pile to put up with Emma for another 150ish pages.

I'm halfway through and not sure if I'm going to make it to the end. It's obvious the author did a lot of research for her world-building, which I appreciate. The pacing was... kind of jerky. Sometimes fast and engrossing, other times so slow that I had time to notice the details that were kind of off. The secondary characters (Lysander, Phaedra, etc.) were what kept me reading as far as I have. I'm kind of tempted to put this in DNF territory and just try the next in the series, but I'm afraid that Burns might be one of those authors who is really good at doing secondary character, but it all falls apart with the primaries.

Ah, the primaries... that is what is making this such a tedious read for me. Ares is ok. He's a kind of typical alpha male hero with the under-explaining, over-protecting shtick. Not very interesting, in my opinion, but not very off-putting either. Off-putting is more how I would describe Emma. For someone who is supposed to be an academically trained archaeologist, she's infuriatingly lacking in curiosity and cultural competence and, comparing her to the people I know who do field work, it just... it doesn't fit, her character doesn't make any sense to me. There's a big gap between the person she's described as being and her actions and internal dialog. I'm really trying to like this, because it seems like it should be a really great story, but the characters are too off and the romance too tepid for me to really enjoy it.

This is my first Monica Burns book, and whoooo mama *fans self* I wasn't expecting it to be quite so hot! There was a LOT of delicious UST (which I admit, is often lacking these days), and when they finally came together *cough* pun intended *cough*... Yeah, niiiiiiice :)

I need to start reading more standalone novels, or at the very least, pick books that already have a few out in the series already, because these cliff-hanger endings are killing me :P The relationship between Aries and Emma was wrapped up nicely enough, and I was glad he got back a certain item at the end.. But it was definitely open-ended which often annoys me.

I'm DYING waiting for the next book, Assassin's Heart (which for some reason the Goodreads linking thing isn't working for me at the moment or I'd link it), which stars Lysander and Phaedra *thud*

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it.. It lost half a star because the "oh but s/he doesn't love me" angst got a bit tiring after a while, along with Emma's stubbornness getting them into trouble and her constantly blaming Ares for all her woes.

Assassin's Honor, the 1st book in The Order of the Sicari series was good but not great. The storyline definitely has potential but there was just something in the author's writing style that kept me from loving it and i'm not sure if i can pin point exactly what that is. I will agree w/ some of the other reviews in that the phrase "sighed in disgust"..as well as other forms of sighing..were used excessively...and there were a lot of repetitive thoughts going on in the heads of the "H" and "h". I did really like Ares...he was the typical big, tough, sometimes tortured by his past, sword wielding hero. Emma, the heroine, was nothing to write home about..she didn't necessarily turn me off..she just didn't stand out to me like some heroines in other books have. Even though this book wasn't as exciting as i had hoped, i will be reading the 2nd one. It will feature Lysander and Phae who were very interesting secondary characters in the first book.

Well I started this book thinking I would give it a go and I ended up just loving it!

This book is about Archeologist Emma Zale whilst on a dig in Cairo uncovers proof of an ancient order of assassins called the Sicari. The male character is a gorgeous hunk named Ares De Luca descended from and ancient roman bloodline. Ares is right up my street - strong, sexy, honourable and devoted *sigh*.

The only problem I had with this book is that the writer seemed to love the word *disgust* and used it far too many times for my liking.

There are also a lot of Italian words but I just googled them and the thought of Ares whispering words in Italian made me get over that problem quickly!

I can't wait to start book 2 and I would also love to have the ability Emma has - she certainly knows how to put it to good use *wink*

Sooooo, this book. I am giving it 3 stars because there were some compelling aspects to the book for me. But, my main problem with the book was *drum roll* the heroine, Emma! I am not one to really complain about characters, I am pretty easy to please, but she really just fought her journey the entire way and fought poor Ares the entire way too. I know a lot of people on here were enthralled and read this book in one sitting, but that just wasn't me. Darnit!

I was hoping to really like this one but low, it was only ok. In the beginning, I didn't really feel that much of a pull in to the story. The female character was unremarkable even though she had this special "power". Later on in the story, her character was exhibiting conflicting behavior that really confused me and I lost all track as to if I was supposed to like her or not. She was timid and vulnerable in the beginning, but when placed in the same room with the hero, she was domineering, aggressive, and plain 'ol uncooperative to the point of nearly killing the hero in three separate occasions. And I really got tired of her not trusting him, ok, he saved her life and is on his death-bed, so now she does, then the minute she doesn't get her way, she doesn't trust him again and he's back to bleeding. Sorry, she just didn't hit my "sympathetic" button.

And the fact that the hero was supposed to be the pinnicle of 'warrior excellence' and yet turned into a 15 year old boy with a long knife really made me cringe and not really respect him. I know love and addle people's brains at first, but once they realize it, they usually take steps to correct it. Not our hero, he kept stumbling along taking whatever punishment his lady-love saw fit to dish out for him without ever saying, "hey, you're killing me here!"

Overall, the story read like a writing manual checklist. All the required elements were there but the story lacked a heart. There was no emotional hook to draw me in. Hence, I've been reading Dostoevsky at the same time. If you are just looking for a light read and like old Italian, then you might enjoy this. Frankly, for me, I don't speak Italian so I have no idea what all that was and since it was never explained in the book, I still don't know. Oh well. Good thing it was an ebook, didn't waste any paper.

I am sorry to say that this really didn’t work for me at all. I was hyped to read this book and in the end I was really disappointed.

The blurb is promising and the book is action packed with interesting facts and a unique world.
I enjoyed the Hero of the book. He is the strong and silent type and very overprotective and that is always my cup of tea.

The secondary characters are interesting and they really add to the story. What completely ruined this book for me is the heroine. I have never met anyone who has irritated me so much in such a short time span.

I stopped reading at the 56 % mark. It is all on me and nothing else. Please note that this is my personal opinion.

I have very little patience with books these days.

This book wasn't terrible but several things bothered me. The constant interjection of Latin words and phrases in the vocabulary of the Sicari (it didn't seem Italian to me). English is my second language and I seldom interject random Spanish words as I speak. This drives me bunkers when it's done in books because I've NEVER known a fluent speaker to do that (if your English is good enough in the first place, then you speak English to people who speak to you in English.)

Something else that bothered me was that there was a constant comparison about what the Sicari do and what the Praetorians do. Maybe this gets less as the book goes along but I just didn't have the patience to find out.

Normally, I absorb PNR books like crazy, but I had a really hard time staying engaged with this book. I really enjoyed the premise of the story, but again, I couldn't really engage with the story. I took me well over a week to finish a book that should have been finished in a day. That being said, I think the development of it was good; I think it's more a "me" problem than a book problem.

pretty interesting plot and back story. Ares is, of course, charming. but like other reviewers, i had a hard time with Emma. whe was too rash and moody in my opinion. but the book was fun and i may read the next one in the series.

Wow what an excellent book , I loved every page , the more I read and the deeper the story got , the more I needed to read .
This book is written with passion and affection for it characters, and consequently you can feel the passion Ares and Emma have for each other, it’s so strong and deep you can almost touch it .
The story , based around the Sicari Assassins and the Praetorians, is very descriptive and aggressive, as it should be , and has some wonderful little touches in there .
But the fact that the Sicari,Ares, can seduce Emma with his thoughts and bring her to pleasure without physically touching her , was awesome , what woman wouldn’t love to be on the receiving end of that gift .
I look forward to the next book with great anticipation.

One of my favorite things to do on a Sunday morning is to lay in bed and read an entire book cover to cover with no interruptions (ah, the joys of not having children.) This week's pick for the honor was Assassin's Honor and it was a fun, exciting, engrossing read- perfect for a lazy morning or a day at the beach.

Although this book marks the author's first foray into the world of paranormal romance, she jumps right in like a pro and sets up a complex, layered world that I as a reader could really sink my teeth into. There's a lot of world building and details about the Order of the Sicari, their roots in the time of the Roman Empire, their conflict with the Praetorians, the rules and codes of the Sicari community, and much more. A good part of the book is spent (as is the case in many initial novels in a series) setting up the rules of the setting for the story, but it's a unique setting and, being the sucker for world building that I am, I didn't mind that.

The hero and heroine are also unique. They have instant chemistry, sure, and their scenes together are spicy, of course, but what I really enjoyed was the depth of emotion that each one showed throughout the novel. Emma is a tough, independent woman, but when she gets upset it's because something or someone has made her feel that way and not because she needs to put on an act. Likewise, Ares is a typical alpha male, but he understands that not everyone finds those traits and behaviors appealing, and realizes that Emma has no reason to want to like, trust, or even talk to him, as he's certainly imposed tremendously on her. Oftentimes in PNR the feelings and thoughts of the characters take a distant back seat to the goings-on in the world at large, and I'm happy that each main character had a chance to really develop as an individual. I hope these two make appearances in future books.

Another interesting thing about this book- no immortals in sight! The fact that everyone in this story can die just like regular people helped to ramp up the drama during the fighting and battling, and illustrated the depth of feeling that Emma and Ares had for each other- "I don't want you to get hurt" takes on a whole different connotation when you mean that literally, instead of just figuratively because the other person can't be killed.

Maybe it's because the hero and heroine were so well-developed and felt so authentic to me, but the main thing I didn't care for about this book was the sort of two-dimensional secondary characters. Lysander and Phaedra are immediately set up as the hero and heroine of the next book (due out in September) but beyond that we don't really get to know anyone else. It felt like most of the ancillary characters were introduced because the specific scene where they appeared required it. Who is Cleo? Whatever happened with Ewan- is he a good guy or a bad guy? What about all the other Sicari that were so distrustful of Emma at first? The villians in this story felt pretty flat too. We didn't really find out for sure who was behind the murders of Emma's parents and her mentor until the end of the book, and once the mastermind was revealed, it didn't feel all that climactic- nothing was ever revealed about the guy!

I love how, even though I know a story is going to have a happily ever after, I can still be on the edge of my seat while the final plot elements are resolved. I found the happily ever after in this book to be especially satisfying considering the wringer of drama the characters had to go through to get there, and that sealed the deal for me wanting to read the next book in the series when it comes out.

Despite my reservations about the supporting cast, this was a fun read with lots of action and adventure, mystery, intrigue, and, of course, a really sweet romance.

Overall Grade: B+

On a dig in Cairo, looking to prove or disprove the existence of Sicari, gifted archaeologist Emma Zale finds what could be proof of her parent's dedication to the same quest. Looking to show her discovery to her boss, friend and mentor in an adjacent cave Emma finds him dead.

The police question Emma's involvement beyond discovering the body while she's drawn to a stranger watching her from a shadowy corner of the police station. Emma's released and returns home but remains on edge as memories of her parent's deaths resurface. Emma thinks her troubles followed her home evidenced by the exquisitely perfect specimen of the male physique filling her doorway.

Ares DeLuca quickly uncovers Emma's talent and decides she doesn't have what he came for but is more than satisfactory as a woman and that his hasty actions may have led the rival bloodthirsty Praetorian warriors to her doorstep. Ares is uncertain if it's his duty or his lust for Emma driving his actions and clouding his judgment but he's obligated to protect her from the new dangers she's unaware of.

Emma's out of her element and refuses to fear the stranger and resists his offer of assistance. She soon doubts her decision but is determined to do things her way. As she tries to resolve a coded puzzle, Emma realizes she confused. She's in possession of a clue that could answer Ares question or be a message for her plus she's strongly attracted to yet suspicious of Ares and his motives.

Face to face with a terrifying burglar in her home, Emma realizes she's desperately in need of Ares help. While Ares approaches Emma's home and sees things are amiss. Emma grudgingly accepts him as a guardian against the evil trying to kill her. Taking Emma to safety is certain to cause unrest among the order but Ares gets at least two allies to believe in his position.

Trading information Emma learns about secret sects and societies, mysterious murders, valuable artifacts and Ares but refuses to believe his motives. Once she receives a rude lesson in Sicari honor and judgment, Emma begins to expand her own horizons. Code in hand and a new partnership sends seekers on a race to locate the artifact, maintain the Order of Sicari's in an openly covert manner.

Minor drawbacks were repetition of a couple of early scenes plus fits of the sillies overtook both Ares and Emma when they realized the changes in their relationship, Emma suffered from bratties also and annoyed this reader a bit. Offsetting those points were interesting secondary characters, drawn out sexual tension, an interesting and detailed mystery and a shadowy, devious villain as a foe.

This new to me author had quite the tale to tell. Full of mystery, betrayals, history, romance, exotic locales, danger, action, adventure and a powerful, scrumptious and studly hero ... a satisfying fantasy to feed this reader's craving for a tasty tale. Despite the quibbles.

I shall start with it was not that great.

But, the historic and archeological dig aspect was quite pleasing for my eyes to read. The whole mystery of discovering something hidden, finding something everyone believed was a myth and cyphers was something I enjoy reading. On the contrary, I don't like the romantic element tied into all of it! There is nothing else. The two in question, Emma and Aries, were either at each others throats for the most insignificant details or having hot sex. Now, let's look at what's wrong with that picture.

First, I don't like to read about their love-life when one of them is trying to describe the importance of this artifact that has supposedly started the bloodthirst between the Sicari (good-guys) and the Praetorians (bad-guys). I really hate it when something so important to the plot is shadowed by who they dated. This is supposed to be a love story and an action story. Unfortunately, the action part didn't progress at all. Sure, she cracked some cyphers, witness a Sicari funeral, got her fathers notebook, but that was only thirty pages of the whole story. In the end, their passion of each other meant much more to the plot than this artifact that is the most important thing to the Sicari. There was a part where Emma was attacked by a Praetorian (at least that's what everyone thinks he is), knocked unconscious, and with no regard to the injuries she obtained, her mind is cluttered with the thoughts of how good he feels. Reality people. I would be more worried about myself than the man who has brocken into my home, stole a very important archeological artifact to me, and then threatened me.

Next, there was no advancement of the plot part. Firstly, what is this object that they want to obtain so badly, this Tyet of Isis? All we have that it's a symbol and that it's an object. Now, would I risk my life to go find this thing everyone's looking for for a man I barely know? Secondly, what is this culture of the Sicari? I hear lots about it, but what is it? The only aspect that was present is the blood bond and a gauntlet. And the strict rules. Now, how the hell do I behave when I don't know the rules and the man I am so senselessly in love with outright refuses to tell me what they are and then scolds me for trying to do what I know how? Next, I get no history from either of them other than both their parents died. And nothing on how all this came to be, with and before Charlies death. I like plot as much as the next person and their "I love him, but he lied to me but let's screw anyway" attitude has completely made me lose my mind. That is not plot. That is details to the plot. At least, it's supposed to be.

That is probably all there was that I was displeased about. But I can't like a book that has no plot. So this is not something I will continue with.

When I finished this book it took me a while to think about if I really liked it and how to rate it. It wasn't a bad story, overall I think I liked. So finally I broke it down this way:

What I liked: I liked the Sicari. The author did a good job with building up this secret society with all the laws, heirarchy, and rituals. Her descriptions of them were very vivid (especially the fight scenes whch can get muddled in descriptive detail, but not in this book). I could actually see the fire and feel the heat of it (okay, it was also 95 degrees yesterday). And I loved Ares. I mean, come on- a man named after the god of war has "fine" and "hot" stamped all over his body. Ms. Burns did a great job with his character, describing his struggles and why he did what he did. For the most part he and his motivations were easy to understand.

What I didn't like: While this was very well written, sometimes the descriptions of a character's thoughts or feelings went on for pages and I wanted to get back to the action or have them act. The closer I got to the end of the book the more I began to only skim those passages. I also did not like Emma. I tried to understand her truama and sometimes her actions made sense (for instance when she intervened) but sometimes her thoughts, feelings, and lack of action made no sense. The further you got into the books the less she listened and let Ares explain what he thought and felt and why he did certain things. Later she would use his lack of explanation against him and I'm sitting there thinking "but you didn't give him a chance!" I understood she was hurt in the past, but as a character from begining to end she seemed to lack an honesty with herself that also kept her from being honest with him. This lack of honesty went on right up to the end. When she was finally ever honest with herself she was so slow to act in going to him to take responsibility for her part in things, while she was always quick to pass the blame off on him. Her lack of trust, honesty, responsibility, and action made her seem churlish, spoiled, and childish. Nope, I didn't like her at all and since she was a main character that was a big draw back for me.

I'm not completely sold on this series or author yet. I would like to read the next book in the series just to see where it goes. She set up a nice story for antoher couple already, but that female seems a lot like Emma so I'm hesitant to read it. I will read a couple of more books by Ms. Burns, but she's not on my must read list yet.
