"A cat? A cat?" he cried. "Have you gone mad? Here we are starving and you must bring home a goblin, a goblin to share the little we have, and perhaps suck our blood at night?"In this story we follow a poor artist, his dedicated housekeeper, and a wonderfully loyal cat. In their village, cats are considered to be very bad - after all, they were the only animal not to be blessed by the Buddha.
And so Good Fortune comes to love with the artist and the housekeeper...and maybe, just maybe, the benevolent cat will live up to her name.
"We have been lonely, I see now." [said the artist]
"May I humbly suggest," said the housekeeper, "that we call this cat Good Fortune?"
First published in 1930 and winner of the 1931 Newbery Medal, this wonderful little classic brings together an intelligent and loving white cat (with spots) an impoverished Japanese artist, his sweet little housekeeper and a compassionate Buddha for a surprising miracle of an ending. (no spoiler here)
Sad and touching cat tale...... and you may shed a tear.
