It's actually pretty good. To a point. It's about a young girl who discovers that her mother is a vampire/werewolf/shapeshifter-thingy and her father is a vampire/werewolf/shapeshifter-thingy hunter, and that she's destined to end the war between the two families.

The dialogue is quick-witted, and there are some good parts to the book, like when the main character is forced to suck blood for the first time, an act that's almost guaranteed to kill the person due to the initial bloodlust, and her best friend is forced to be her first victim, so they have to figure out a way around the binding spell. And when the council of families on her father's side decide they must kill her to save everyone, and she willingly volunteers (a sixteen-year-old!) to be killed for the good of everyone.

Sometimes even published authors get tired of trying to sell something they've written and just want to give it away so that people can read it. And so Will Shetterly has made Midnight Girl available (though there a few ways you can pay him if you like). It's a young adult novella about a young woman with a mysterious family. And in such a short book there are enough twists and turns that I almost hate to say more lest I spoiler the spoilers.

Finally sat down and finished reading the tale of Cat and Tarika. Cat found out on her birthday that she was a cross between a "nighter" (think vampire) and a family of nighthunters. She has to decide what she will do and who she will join. Shetterly once again brought characters to life and set conflict and choice loose in life. Enjoyable tale well told.
