Yoh's spiritual journey into the caves of Izumo has boosted his mana and his confidence - and just in time, too! It's the last battle of the Shaman Fight preliminaries, and Yoh is up against Tao Ren and his Chinese warlord of an Over Soul, Bason. Ren has already killed his officiant in the qualification round, and now he is determined to teach Yoh the meaning of fear. Yoh and Amidamaru are closer than ever, but can their unique bond of friendship overcome Ren's awesome mana and masterful control of Bason?
Hiroyuki Takei (武井宏之 Takei Hiroyuki) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime Shaman King. His brother, Hirofumi Takei (武井宏文) is also a manga-ka.
Yoh and Ren go up against each in a much more crucial and regulated battle as they showcase their latest new abilities with their Over Soul. There's a bit more tension throughout this battle with unnecessary hype-narration by inconsequential secondary characters.
Mangaka Hiroyuki Takei also introduces many new quantitative data associated with the "magic system" of this universe. This will probably help show that some shamans might actually have something that's beyond quantifiable data to overcome the obstacles they face and that these elements are what's going to be much more decisive in the battles to come.
Shaman King is rated Teen and deals with ghosts and death (including at least one unfortunate panda which may or may not have been a reanimated corpse before it meets its end) so if such things bother you or someone you considered getting this book for then you might want to reconsider.
The preliminary round of the shaman fights are upon us as Yoh meets his opponent Ren who has already murdered the Patch member that tested him before he started the tournament. We also get to see more about the world Ren comes from and we get to see an assortment of additional combatants as they watch the Yoh vs Ren on the Patch Television set.
My favorite part of the book would have to be when Yoh who is not as strong as Ren finally Breaks his oversoul and a glimmer of hope comes for the first time for our hero of the tale. :)
Shaman, n. In animistic religion, a person who communicates with (or is possessed by) Gods, Spirits, and the dead, using magic to cure illness, foretell the future, and influence events. Shamans act as Medicine Men entering into a special trance to borrow these spirits' powers; guides or mediums, forming links between the physical and the spiritual worlds. In ancient times, they were the centers of society, and still are in some cultures today.
Ever since Amazon linked up with comiXology, so that readers could get comics, graphic novels and manga on their kindles, I have been meaning to check out what they had. Under Amazon Prime Reading you get a number of titles for free and this comiXology original is one such series.
The story revolves around a boy called Manta Oyamada, who, whilst cutting through a cemetery in Tokyo to try to catch the last train home after school, runs into a stranger called Yoh Asakura who is talking to ghosts. The next day in school no one will believe Manta's story, even when a new transfer student arrives and is nonother that Yoh. However, Yoh denies their meeting and laughs at the idea of there being ghosts.
This seventh volume continues the story with Yoh having survived the fight with Faust, but having also been defeated. In a twist, Yoh is actually saved at the end by his nemesis, Tao Ren, only to find out that Ren is his final opponent, in three month's time. Only a win will see Yoh qualify from the preliminaries, so after recovering in hospital he travelled home to Izumo to have some intensive training. Will this be enough for him to overcome Ren?
Easy to read and engaging, I enjoyed this and it felt just like reading a paperback manga, even on Kindle, as you have to click through the book backwards. A nice little touch. Another solid 4* and onto the next volume!
In developing the lore for this manga, Hiroyuki Takei has now begun to incorporate more elements of questionable quality. Power levels are now seen with numeric representation: shaman fighters have a spirit level akin to MP in a role-playing game, an OverSoul Point level based on the percentage of an Oversoul's formation (a complete OS being 100 OSP, for 100%), and a destroyed OS leads to a deduction of base spirit points equal to the OSP used (thus, Ren with 350 points drops down to 250 when a 100 OSP Bason is temporarily broken). We've gotten into YGO Life Points now....
Additionally, it seems the development of Oversouls steadily approaches the memetic "punch ghosts" of melee-oriented Stands from JoJo. Ren's Bason, with 100 OSP, is a concrete OS with actual arms and a head. It's not absurd to think the characters will gain the ability to summon their ghosts in physical facsimiles of their former bodies, basically being the same shit as e.g. Star Platinum from JoJo. Before this, Amidamaru and Bason's 30 OSP forms resemble reversed Cloths from Saint Seiya - ball-like versions of the ghosts' actual armor. Kinda strange. Neat, but strange.
The fight choreography has improved, at the cost of inferior backgrounds. Yoh and Ren fight in a cemetery, but it looks like a banal woods in comparison to the battlefield vs. Faust VIII.
So, after everything, now it's time for Yoh's third fight, and it's against Ren. Let's see how it goes, and let's Keep on Reading.
I have always loved comics, and I have I can. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and hope always to love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.
Hiroyuki Takei seems to want to keep an energetic pace in this series because we already have the big rematch...Yoh versus Ren! I am all for discussions but there was a tad too much for my taste in this battle. But then again, after reading Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, one can get dialogue, but it is not always needed. This volume had just a smidge too much for my liking which pulled it from a 4-star book to a 3. There is a little bonus material in the back which was fun and light.
With his Mana and spirit increased, Yoh thinks he may just be ready to face off against Tao Ren - but will his bond with Amidamaru hold up against the power of Bason the warlord? Takei gives readers a huge dose of action in this entry to the "Shaman King" series. It's warlord versus samurai in an all out duel!
This volume focuses on the battle between Yoh and Ren, as they clash for a place in the next round of the shaman fight. It's another excellent volume which gets into the characters of these two, developing them very well in the midst of a great battle. We also get a further insight into Ren's family, having a look at the patriarch who set him on such a destructive path.
Don't love the introduction of a numerical system to this mystical thing. Feels cheesy. Also, I don't like Ren. And we already know him. I miss the introduction of a new, complex antagonist in this volume. I know this volume is setting up the next several--the next arc--but I personally find Ren kind of boring in this one.
Me encanta
Yoh's character development in this volume is great. His battle with Tao Ren is also very suspenseful and does not follow the "protagonist is obviously going to win" plot that many comics do. It's one of the best in the series.
The last preliminary duel. The combat system became a little difficult to understand after they brought in numbers. It's better to describe things in other ways so that you can surprise the audience without breaking the math.
The anticipated battle. Yoh vs Ren. It has begun. Oh, well. Ok... I guess... I was not very hyped for this battle and I kind of...hate...Ren. So, yes, whatever. Off to the next one!
