Read this during/after a trip to Switzerland -- really loved almost all of these stories! Some are very beautiful (Youth, Hesse), some funny (Kannitverstan, Hebel), some awfully sad (The Friend in the Closet, Kesten), some way older than I expected and super atmospheric (Bergkristall, Stifter). Revisited The Metamorphosis after many years and really enjoyed it. Also very interesting to consider the collection having been published in 1955, just 10 years after the end of the war.

This was a serviceable but unremarkable collection. Having already read the main stories of the collection, “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka and “Death in Venice” by Thomas Mann, I was a little disappointed in the rest of the stories. Aside from 2 or 3, I found most of the stories quite unremarkable in content or style. While the stories were not poorly written they are almost all of the same, in my view bland, style, perhaps readers more receptive to that style will find this collection a great resource for late 19th/early 20th century German authors.
