SO much new information! That ending broke my heart just a little bit (lol just kidding it broke my heart a lot) because anything to do with Alphonse gets to me. Again with this volume I found some of the combat to be difficult to follow, especially during the fight with Envy. It didn't ruin it for me by any stretch but I found myself getting a little lost at certain moments of the fights.

"-Why do you bother to keep me alive knowing what I know?
-To make you realize how deep the waters you’ve been swimming in are."

(Gritos internos).

"Do you have what it takes to become my “wrath” or will it be one of the others?"

I loved every page of this volume. Major plot elements are being revealed like crazy! Volume 13 really shows that Ed is not just dedicated, but also a very capable thinker, solving problems even when given seemingly an impossible task.

Arakawa doesn't play with the story. It accelarates even faster than drawing a transmutation circle.

This was a great volume as it deals with them fighting Gluttony and then getting trapped in his dimension, then trying to find a way out of there only to find they can't. And then there is the usual revelations and fight with Envy but then they learn the nature of Homunculus and Philosophical stone and all that and somehow are able to escape only to meet the big boss controlling the OUROBOROS. Its such a big revelation and changes the manga completely and makes this whole thing super personal for Ed going forward!

Such big revelations and emotional moments and reunion and also great stuff with Roy. The story is going in interesting directions.

Yet Another Plot Point Mauri Forgot: Ed and Ling Yao's sojourn into Gluttony's...uh, pocket space? This feels a bit slow, especially compared to the last two volumes, but it allows the reader and Ed to actually synthesize all of the batshit nonsense that's been thrown at us since Ed's trip out East and start acting rather than reacting.

Mustang waltzes into HQ, full of new intel and ready to take the next steps...whoops. I love that Arakawa does this, because it's Mustang's whole thing that he's thinking and planning 15 steps ahead like a chess grandmaster and in opposition to that she sets up a villain(ous organization) that's thought 115 steps ahead. It's in pretty direct contrast to a lot of other shonen media (and American superhero comics) where the next Big Bad is just better at punching than the previous one.

Side notes:
The series of panels where Ling Yao and Ed watch Envy reveal his true form are almost better than the reveal itself on the next page.
Ed and Al being all, "are you my daddy?" at Father and Arakawa cutting the chapter there, to torment us.

Archived review from 2007:

1) Cripes, they have manga on this thing?

2) I'm only going to do the most recent volume because I don't want to write 13 separate reviews.

3) Hiromu Arakawa's series has a lot going for it. For me, manga usually falls into one category or the other: either there's lots of cool action and weird enemies and not enough focus on the characters or there's a lot of focus on the characters and not much plot that doesn't have to do with romantic hijinks (and then there's CLAMP, but that's a whole other acid trip).

The series follow two young brothers on a quest. You see, one of them's lost their body and now inhabits a suit of armor and the other has lost an arm and a leg (replaced by metal limbs). They don't like this.

Along the way, they've had to sign up with the military in order to sponsor their quest for knowledge and met many, er, interesting characters. At the beginning there's some flashing back and forth between the whole "losing the body" accident and the "present" that's a bit confusing, but now everything's settled into a even timeline that's progressing quite nicely.

Characters I like -- except for the increasingly useless Lin Yao -- wander around for much of the volume doing somewhat interesting stuff, y'know, just up to the verge of much more interesting stuff? A pleasing enough middle chapter of a long saga, but the core characters are all separated for most of it, and their interaction is the main draw.

The villains are so fleshed out and interesting. You can understand and sometimes sympathise with them.
No character in this story is 2D and it makes it that much more amazing.

A list of things that happened in this volume(for the future me who is probably going to reread this whole series when bored, in no particular order):

• Gluttony having a whole ass portal in his stomach
• Roy Mustang discovering the corruption of the military top
• Ed uses his practical knowledge of survival to cook his leather boot and eat it
• The discharge of Mustang’s unit
• The physical shape of envy
• Ed being hot af while using his intelligence to escape from an otherwise hopeless situation
• Hohenheim?

Into hell's heart!

Every major character is going right down to the dragon's lair. We've got awful truths, dark foreshadowing, desperate battle, separation and captivity, some of the creepiest and most terrifying imagery in the entire series so far, all capped with one hell of a final twist, this volume has good odds of being the single darkest in the entire series, at least before the climax hits. Everyone's hit the rock bottom.

But the only way now is up... and at least as far as Edward's concerned, the darker the hour, the brighter the revelation. He came close to finding the truth right now.

- I feel like the author could have done more with disability rep in this series. In this world being disabled is seen as something that must be fixed and I'm not into that. But it really is the only mildly problematic element to the series so far.
- I should have mentioned previous that while Envy is not identified as genderqueer/nonbinary and he is a villain, I still felt like he's a welcoming presence for enby readers. Same goes for Winry's boss who isn't identified as gay but is heavily implied to be, or at least is comfortably effeminate.

After dangling over the precipice of conspiracy the last few volumes, the characters are at last swallowed by the abyss - figuratively, or literally. I enjoyed how much the story threads of many different characters paralleled each other, extending the effectiveness of the "eaten by a monster" metaphor by applying it and abstracting it. Escape from the belly of the literal beast implies hope for the others - a neat little bit of foreshadowing for the end.

3.5 stars. The story part was good, but a lot of the fight scenes were just gross. (Yes, I realize, Envy is supposed to be gross in his true form. That doesn't make it pleasant to read.)

Still an enjoyable graphic novel. Many of the characters do some dumb things, though. Given where we are in the series, this makes sense. Things have to get bad – really bad – in order for them to get better. But understanding the arc structure doesn't make this installment my favorite.

Am I supposed to hate Scar? Because I actually love him. He's just so sad and tortured and using the thing he hates most for his revenge.... I might have a type when it comes to my favorite characters. ;) of course adding in a dash of adorable never hurts either. ;) him helping the little girl find her panda was BEYOND precious.

This book also features a lot of creepy & fucked up scenes & art, so me like. :) envy? On my god, they are fucking terrifying. & badass.

Btw, I'm Calling envy "them" because their gender is pretty vague & I can't decide what the proper pronoun to use here. The other characters in the story say "he" but Part of me is waiting for Envy to shout at them that's their a girl...... but until I hear Envy's say so, I'm saying they to be safe.

Anyway! This novel totally adds to the plot & moves it along. One of the best things about this series is how little feels like filler. Everything is important. Hard to pull off in a manga & I love that. :D

Also the characters are fucking brilliant. Love the brother' love for each other. & the prince is badass & hilarious.

Definitely read if you like manga.

Edward and Ling gets swallowed by Gluttony along with Envy. Inside Gluttony is the fake gate of truth. There Envy reveals his true form, prepare to be awed. Struggling to get out of the strange portal inside Gluttony, Edward comes to realize the conspiracy concerning his country Amestris. Also the secret behind human transmutation and the fate of Xerxes comes to light. On the other hand Roy Mustang is in dire situation after his realization of the corruption inside Military of Amestris. All his subordinates are taken away from him, leaving him in house arrest. The story of Wrath's origin is told from his own voice. At the end of the volume the Elric brothers are left with the unanswered questions about the identity of their Father and the Homunculus' father. Are they the same? Or is there a more sinister plot behind all this?

No vabbè gente. Lacrime e risate per questo volume. Ma vogliamo parlarne?
SPOILER

Aiutooo

What can I say but Ewww! Sloshing through blood! Yep, the yuck factor is pretty high in this volume. Quite a bit of this volume is spent inside of Gluttony, who likes to swallow his victims. Supposedly, there is no way to escape, once a victim has been swallowed. Edward is out to prove that wrong.

Meanwhile, Mustang learns the full truth of how deep the military is involved with the conspiracy. Things are looking pretty bad for our small group of heroes. Do they have any hope of stopping the horrendous plan that "Father" and the hormunculi are getting ready to implement?
