Johnny Silver is the world's soon-to-be biggest rock star, but on the eve of his debut concert in Los Angeles, he mysteriously disappears, causing global pandemonium. His friend Taj tries to discover the truth about his disappearance, which leads her to TAP.com and its shadowy founder, Sutton Werner, who throws the wildest parties in Bel-Air.
TAP started out innocently enough, as a website that dishes the dirt on the kids of Sunset Boulevard and beyond. But it has become something more. Membership is a privilege with responsibilities and consequences.
At Sutton's parties, anything goes, especially in the legendary backroom rituals nicknamed The Angels Practice. Rumors abound of a special drink handed out at the parties that tap into otherworldly sensations.
One night Taj meets Nick, a Westside preppie who doesn't buy into the TAP mayhem, especially since his kid sister never came home from attending one of its blow-out bashes. Slowly the two of them are drawn to TAP and to each other. But Taj just might know more than she's letting on....
Are you ready for the darker side of Tinsel-town's brightest lights?

TAP, The Angels of Practice, is all everyone can talk about. This website/drink/drug is intoxicating and no one can get enough of it. No one can explain what TAP really is, since it is all around them and they are so dependent on it. The company that owns it holds the most exclusive parties, grants everyone's material wishes, provides all the gossip and promotes the biggest rock star that everyone loves, Johnny Silver.
But then strange things begin to happen. Kids all over Sunset Boulevard are beginning to disappear, including Johnny Silver. No one knows why this is happening, and others are too busy with TAP to worry about what is going on. Everyone except for Nick and Taj, who are the only ones that don't buy into the whole TAP industry.
Before they know it, Taj and Nick find themselves together, trying to solve the mystery of what is happening and even developing a strong relationship with each other. Unfortunately, it may be too late for them to actually do anything about it.
Told through Nick and Taj's points of view, Melissa de la Cruz takes us into a world that is far from THE AU PAIRS. ANGELS ON SUNSET BOULEVARD captures the reader from the very first page with its unusual uniqueness. Each character brings a certain atmosphere that captivates the audience into wanting more. The reader becomes so involved in the story that they will soon become disappointed when the book has to end.
Now the only thing left to do is wait for the next novel, which may be a long wait (well, for me that is).
Ugh! Let's see, I first opened this book and began reading it in hmm October, I think. It is now Mid-January and I forced myself to finish is. I hate to give up on a book, but I almost wish I would have.
The concept behind the book is good and original. TAP, or The Angels Practice is a Facebook/My Space type website with a twist. It is more like a cult, just for teens and young people. One of the biggest parts of TAP are the parties where a special narcotic/hallucinogenic drink is served to free them of their inhibitions among other things. Like I said, I thought it was very original, I just wish it played out better.
The author, Melissa de la Cruz has written some very well-liked books, including, but not limited to her Blue Bloods series about vampires. The writing in itself was good, descriptive, and easy-to-read. Somewhere after the first couple of chapters it just got painfully boring for me to read. There is a bit of mystery involving a missing rock star and some random missing kids, but I just didn't care. The characters who went missing weren't major and I had no connection with them.
The most disappointing thing for me was the ending. It just fell flat. It seemed rushed and frantic and then just ended. I felt there were so many loose ends that were just left. I would have liked some things played out a bit more and explained. We found some things out about Taj, the main female character, but it was all so rushed. I would have liked to know more about what she was thinking and why certain things happened. I don't want to reveal too much, so I will leave it at that.
Overall, good concept but poorly executed. I have not turned off of this author completely though. I have heard good things about many of her other books. Although, some people who reviewed this book loved it. Hmmm...whatever floats your boat I guess. This just wasn't for me.
The genre of Angels on Sunset Boulevard is fiction. Taj the main female character of the story is a fun loving, pretty, poor skater, who never in a million years ever thought of talking to a guy like Nick. Who is a good looking, rich, all-American athlete that gets all the good in life and never has to really work for something he wants. So when the two joined forces to find Taj’s rocker boyfriend Johnny and Nick’s 13-year-old stepsister Fish it was destiny that the two was really meant for each other. Along the way they find all the dark sides and after affects of all the TAP events that at one point where a kind of cult was being started. The secret “back room” is where the selective members of TAP go to be “free”, as Nick digs of evidence of what have may caused his sisters disappearance raises questions of what is really going on TAP. If you want to read more about Nick and Taj’s journey to retrieve their loved ones, I insist you read this book. You’ll see 3 main conflicts of the story, man vs. society, man vs. man and man vs. self. The author bases this story in a modern setting, where there’s websites like myspace/facebook, and parties that mostly involve drugs and alcohol. I guess the message the author is trying to send across is that you don’t go looking for true love; it finds you when you least expect it. The authors writing style is very easy going and descriptive. I can get a clear understanding of what is going on, because of how well she uses her words. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a good story filled with mysteries and leaves you on the edge waiting for more.
First off is it just me or does that look like Shannon Doherty on the cover? Anyway, I really enjoyed this book and boy will the ending shock you and have you hooked for the next book. I just saw on Twitter that Melissa de la Cruz is still working on Angels Lie and from Amazon it looks like it won’t be out until October. Another book to wait for!
I picked this book up because 1) I really enjoyed the Blue Blood books and am anxiously waiting for The Van Alen Legacy and 2) it totally sounded like something that could take place these days with Facebook, MySpace, etc. It’s kind of a scary thought of people using these social applications to prey on kids. I know there is some of this already but I was curious to see where this book was going to take that idea. I really liked both Taj and Nick and thought that they had great chemistry together. You get a glimpse into both their lives and realize that while you can have a lot of money it sometimes does not make up for the lack of a loving home life. I cannot say much more about the story without revealing the twist so let me just say this book will definitely leave you wanting more. I am actually a little surprise I have not heard more talk about this book.
It was very weird and confusing but then after you think about it it's reflection on real life and how the media and marketing and just life in general works. How somebody starts something gets noticed and everybody else just follows like how nicks description about red bull. So behind the whole story I get the concept and everything but I just don't like it I don't like but in a way I kind of wants to know how it ends. Even as I was reading the book I knew that this was going to be one of those books that you get to the ending to see what happens and you just end up frustrated and confused and I was like WTH? Still if you really think about it and put some things aside you end up realizing that it does reflect on real life and it might be wrong and some might hate it it's true. Not that that's how all peoples life's works everyone is different and it all comes back to you and how wan to live your life and stay true to who you are and what you believe. Still I don't like the book I get it I just don't like it and I don't know maybe in the future I'll change my mind or maybe I'll even forget I read this book and May I'll change my opinion or not I don't know. But in the mean time I don't like it :)
not my faves--- kind of weird- and I hated the way that melissa de la cruz wrote like a teenager....not sure if that is cuz Im clearly not a teen--- or what? I felt like the language took away from the story. And she was kind like all named/place dropping about the whole beverly hills thing.... But when I was a teen if I can remember back that far-- I don't think I liked it either...... comes off as really pretentious or something... like Im such a super cool grown up that I even talk like u guys...really no your actually not that super cool..... and yes Im sure that there is a hipster version of super cool like "sick" but Im clearly not a hipster---- and I like super cool because Im old, and Im cool with being old...um so yah....digression.......
and the free love thing.... creepy....and the 13 year old getting in on the free love thing SUPER CREEPY!!! In fact a mother's worst nightmare--- so not really a favourite of mine.......but I may read the second one--if Im really bored and I can buy it for 2$ as well :P
I read this book in one day, it was a very easy read, but very confusing at the same time. The characters were fairly likable and had some depth to them. The plot was good, original, but towards the end the author dumped a load of information on the reader, but did not ever fully explain. Then it just ended. I have heard good things about Ms. Cruz and hope that some of her other books are better written.
Meh, this book wasn't very good. I think that the reader is supposed to feel like the situation is mysterious and intriguing - really it just feels confusing and boring. Because nothing is truly explained, you are left with plotholes and inconsistent character development. This is more disappointing because other books by this author have been awesome, but I would urge even big AuPairs or Blue Bloods fans to give this one a pass.
It actually felt quite shallow and confusing for the first 90-100 pages and I felt unattached to the story or the characters but then the details of TAP started coming out and I couldn't read faster to find out what it is all about, for real. The details of this cult with all its activities and rituals involving the teenagers and youngsters were scary. And to think that they were attracted towards it so willingly and their reasons for it were saddening and the consequences will send chills down the spine.
Just remembered this book exists and when I read it I was 10ish and really confused by all of it. Good to know the reason I was confused was bc I thought it was contemporary YA when it’s actually fantasy??? Good things
I just finished Melissa de la Cruz's new book called Angels on Sunset Boulevard. First of all, you can totally tell that this is going to be the first of a series of books. It totally leaves it open at the end.
The story starts out with the disappearance of a HUGELY famous rock star right at the beginning of his largest concert ever. His girlfriend is in the audience and witnesses the event and is shocked and is worried about him. Johnny Silver met Taj on TAP.com (eerily similar to Myspace.com), a social community for teens. Johnny and Taj first because friends and then fell in love. After posting some of his music on his profile, Johnny's popularity sky rocketed. It was nothing but girls, parties, and music after that. Taj didn't like what was happening to Johnny and didn't even know if they were still technically going out, but she still didn't want anything bad to happen to him.
Nick is a rich teenager with all the comforts that kind of life can afford him. He lives in a huge mansion, drives a cool car, and does basically whatever he wants because his parents are uninvolved because of their own busy lives. He does have a step-sister that he loves very much named Fish and when she disappears after a party sponsored by TAP.com, he begins to investigate the website.
Nick and Taj meet at a TAP.com party. He realized that Taj has more information about the organization than he does and as he enjoys her company, asks her for her help. TAP.com throws the best parties around. There is a drink called TAP that everyone drinks at the parties that provides an overwhelming sense of peace and fuzziness. Like a drug, but totally organic. No one seems to know what makes up the drink though, so technically no one knows what it does to the person who is drinking it. There is also a special back room at each party that requires a password to enter. Behind those doors is where the rituals take place where someone gets "tapped."
Nick and Taj become close during their time together, but Nick learns of some disturbing information about Taj that leads him to worry for her safety. This story is definately one for older, more mature, readers; at least high school. There are several instances of sex and the use of the "f" word more than once. Even though the content is for older readers, this book can easily be read in one sitting. The large print and amount of white space on each page makes it a super fast read.
Melissa De La Cruz has always brought us fun, paranormals and romances and this one is no different . With a touch of thriller , romance and fantasy. Angels on Sunset Boulevard is an excellent read.
Welcome to the world of TAP.com , a website filled with social networkings . When Taj meets singer Johnny Silver , he introduces her to the world of TAP Parties . Soon he is selling TAP the drink and finding more than one way to get high and his career which was at a standstill seems to be on the up-rise.
As Johnny's sold-out concert is about to start , WHAM BAM : Johnny disappears and no-one knows where he is.
On the opposite side of the state is Nick , his girlfriend has introduced him to the world of TAP Parties and sooner or later she disappears also. Soon people from all over the world are disappearing.
Taj and Nick eventually meet up and they find themselves connecting on more than one level. She introduces him to the shocking truth about what really happens in the back room at TAP parties. Nick begins to piece together the dark undertones of TAP with Taj's help. The popular website is now developing into a cult, but who is the leader?
Can Nick and Taj get to the bottom of this before it's too late and solve the mystery before more people start disappearing from the TAP Parties?
For some Angels on Sunset Boulevard may be a bit of a confusing read , but as I found as soon as you get stuck into it , it is a series that you won't want to stop reading.
From de la Cruz's personal webpage;i have been writing and rewriting and tearing my hair out at the writing of this book for the past three years. I am so very sorry for those of you who are still waiting to find out how this story ends. But I am just not ready to tell it—I am blocked on it—I thought I knew how to end it, but I don’t. Not right now. I believe I will write the sequel at some point, but I can’t tell you when, or if it would ever be published even, since the contract has been canceled. I’m truly sorry—but I would rather not release a book that I didn’t feel was worthy than release something that was half-baked. Believe me, releasing the book would have been the easy way out." So it's very difficult to review what's basically the 'unaired' pilot of the series - and I wish I'd know before I started. The extra star is because at some points - the lush descriptions of LA as both utopian and corrupt - remind me a little ofDangerous Angels: the Weetzie Bat Books, and those are classics. I have to see this city before I die.
Like The Blue Blood Series I loved this book. It was such a great read. I flew through this book it was hard to put down. It was a different read then her other books but very enjoyable. I loved Taj, Nick, and Johnny such great characters. There were a lot of twists and turns through out the book. I honestly didn't know how it was going to end. This book really showed the pressures teens go through just to fit in or even stand out to be more noticed or popular. It even showed what teens would do just to get to that point. I enjoyed all of the music parts of the book which showed what was popular when the book was published. Besides showing a darker side of Hollywood life it showed a darker side of the music industry and what some musicians would do just to get noticed. The end killed me wow!! I felt so bad for Taj and Nick. They have such a neat connection and I hope they get to be together. It was really sad how ruined Taj and Johnny's relationship became because of his fame and selfishness, even though Taj was part to be blamed for that. The end was such a mess. There is so much unfinished business. Over all great story!!!
After reading this book I can say I'm unsatisfied. The story is slow, taking only action during the second have of it. The story is about a social network called TAP, it's dark secret and schemes to control people and achieve social goals. The story generates around Taj,Johnny and Nick, three people from different origins but who have this social network as a common ground. A series of events will occur that show us who the bad guys are and what the people who belong to that site can be capable of. What seems like a social site is more similar to a cult with blind followers with unmovable loyalties.
If you liked books by Melissa de la Cruz , you will ask yourself: What happened with this one? Let's see what happens on a next book.
I thought this book was good, but, like the other books I have read by Melissa de la Cruz, it just ends, without resolving the conflict. This book is written from many different perspectives. The story is told by a girl named Taj, a boy named Johnny, and a boy named Nick. Johnny Silver is an instant idol to everyone in Los Angeles. He is part of a website called TAP. But everything gets out of hand when he suddenly disappears. Not even his girlfriend, Taj, who has more to do with his fame than most people think, knows where he is. At TAP parties, people are served TAP, named after the website. It is supposed to be harmless, but it begins causing many problems. The problems are never really resolved, but this book is interesting to read. It was ok, but it was just not the kind of book I really enjoy reading.
I picked this book up because 1) I really enjoyed the Blue Blood books and am anxiously waiting for The Van Alen Legacy and 2) it totally sounded like something that could take place these days with Facebook, MySpace, etc. It's kind of a scary thought of people using these social applications to prey on kids.
The story was kind of unclear in some parts. And it seemed a little slow paced; I was halfway through the book and I still had only a vague grasp on what was happening. The ending, though, leaves the reader curios.
While the idea is interesting and ties in modern, teenage culture - the fact that TAP is a social networking site should be indication enough - it didn't seem to translate well. Also, there was actually very little indication of angels or anything like that. The way it marketed itself, I was expecting another fantasy kind of thing - kind of like Blue Bloods - but instead, I got a teen novel. Not necessarily a bad thing, but still.
While I'm sure the story continues, I don't think I'll be moving forward with it.
"Angels on Sunset Boulevard", written by Melissa de la Cruz, is about teens all over L.A. have suddenly gone missing which includes Johnny a rocker whom everyone loves, and Nick's sister. All these teens have one thing in common though; all of them are on a social network called TAP.com. Nick and Taj now investigate to see who and what is really behind TAP."Angels on Sunset Boulevard" is a book that is a decent read for readers I recommend it to those who are interested in paranormal, slight bit of fantasy, and romance. One of the shockers happen at very end of the book, which made me surprised because you think after everything that happened Taj wouldn't take that side. Most of the action and page turners mostly only happen at the second half of the book.
Just so everyone knows right off, this book has a HUGE cliffhanger, so be warned! And there's no release date yet for the sequel, which sucks. Anyway, this is a really compelling book. De la Cruz's writing flows so well, and the way she deftly handles the suspense throughout the story makes this a must-read. The story is mainly told through the lives of Taj and Nick by a third person narrator, with alternating chapters. The characterizations of everyone in the story are extremely well-done and are believable. Very much a quick read and intriguing and original storyline. Recommended. Now I'm off to find out when the second book is coming out...
This one is yet another interesting one from de la Cruz. The similarities to myspace and rock culture should appeal to today's teens and maybe even make them think a little more about what they put on the internet. The only thing I didn't like was that you're left with a few question at the end, so I'm hoping de la Cruz is going to work on a sequel at some point. I think that there is still more story to tell. It would be a good choice for public or high school libraries, but it has too much sex, drugs, etc. for middle school patrons.
This wasn't as strong as Melissa De La Cruz's other work, but this is one of her older novels so I guess practice makes perfect. The idea is really cool though. So I liked it alot. I just wish there was a sequal already that was hopefully it fills in all the holes in this storyline. We were left off pretty flat, but this story has a really nice angle it just has to keep going in a good direction. For all those who want another eddition on her site Melissa has the book classified as part of a series. So cross your fingers.
I honestly don't know how I feel about this book now that I'm done. Well, I guess when I put a book down to go clean my bathroom is never a good sign but I think that maybe it was ok.
It followed a really random cultish type organization through their escapades and it was kind of confusing so I think thats why I got bored.
So there isn't much that I can say about the book without totally spoiling it but I guess if you have some free time you could pick this up. I'm definitely going to read the next one just to fine out WTH is going on.
This book is very entertaining and I love the fact that it is based off of a myspace community. This is not a book for YA as in middle schoolers, but I can see it being for older high schoolers.
It has IV drugs/herbs, sex, a drag queen guardian, etc. which are not themes that my kids could easily read about.
I picked up this book when the borders near by was closing- a pity indeed- but found the hardcover at a very good price ;) anyways I'm glad that I picked it up because I was looking for something different, not just vampires or werewolves. if you are looking for something different, well you should read it tough it doesn't have a second book yet, visit Melissa page for more details.
I really enjoyed this book and simply don't understand why the ratings are so low. I think Melissa de la Cruz is one of the best young adult authors and that her books are always fun and mysterious. The only thing that bugs me is not knowing if any other books of this series will be published. I certainly hope so... can't wait to see what happens next!
