I'm not rating this for ethical reasons which I'll get to, but that doesn't mean there weren't a lot of things to like. And for what it's worth I've already signed on to read the next book in the series if that tells you anything.

In No Quarter we have a scoundrel of a space pirate named Faolan and the posh, kinda fussy and renowned bounty hunter that's come to collect him, Gar.

IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

 photo tumblr_mnbl02voqO1qzrlhgo1_400_zpsfajzdbpl.gif

√ Space battles.
√ Space intrigues.
√ Two dudes hot for each other. In space.
√ Nefarious dealings with nefarious characters. In space.

I was entertained. Sure, there was maybe a bit too much cock talk. You know, when something as banal as 'pass the salt' equates to instant boner. But that usually led to some loud and messy sex which I am not now nor will I ever be complaining about.

"Make sure you're watching, Gar. I want you to learn all my secrets so the next time I'm spread out beneath you, you'll know how to make me scream."

 photo anigif_enhanced-buzz-24583-1387727088-2_zpsaymec1sz.gif

To top it off there is actually a plot full of double crossing friends, a poisoning, a long lost relative and two seemingly opposing forces banding together to defeat a common enemy. In space. With battles and whatnot.

It was some good storytelling with decent world building. I will admit I was a scoch disappointed that neither of these dudes had any special abilities. They're both plain ole humans with no knots or hooks or extra appendages. They still have to use lube and the 1,2,3 finger thing. I had some sadz over this.

 photo tumblr_n72t2iekkf1rgvfxho1_500_zps7mjyd4xc.gif

Maybe it was a tad overly reliant on the chemistry connection between Faolan and Gar when there was adequate time to base their connection on experiential knowledge but whatevs. Randy space dudes.

Were it not for the events at the 40% mark this would've been a solid read, but those events soured my experience altogether.

Both of these characters have lost people close to them and handle those losses in their own ways. Faolan has a penchant for anonymous sex and hydro vodka. Whereas Gar tends to bury his in avoidance by isolating himself and making his environment as tidy and organized as possible. And work. Always work.

I'm not going to make excuses for Gar because there aren't any; but I believe the intent was to show him being triggered or goaded into a dissociative fugue of sorts and thus not responsible for his actions which sets my teeth on edge because of the implications. Nothing excuses abuse. No one asks for it. Having a mental illness doesn't excuse it. And don't ever blame the victim in my presence. If someone resorts to violence once it's highly probable they will again. No matter how sorry they are or how much they promise it'll never happen again.

The fact that the scene was included at all I found appalling mainly because I can guarantee were Faolan a woman it would've never made it through the editing process, but because they're both men it's somehow acceptable. But it's not. It's really not. Presumably because men can "defend themselves" it's not abuse, yet Faolan never fights back. Never raises a hand to Gar. And is beaten unconscious.

I was left with the feeling that it was all done in an effort to depict their relationship as passionate or dynamic; that Gar beating his lover unconscious was a twisted means of foreplay. Because not five minutes afterward they're fucking.

 photo images-4_zpswuxruzvg.jpeg

For this reason I can't rate it as I feel any rating would condone domestic violence and that I can't do.

Nor can I recommend it which is a shame since there were quite a few things I enjoyed about this book.

**4.8 Out of this World Stars**
In the end we're all alone anyway.

WOW...seriously, fan-fucking-tastic! I never thought when I stumbled across this book that I would be getting such an amazing read. One that captured me from start to finish. When I read the words space and galaxy, I thought...meh, not my thing. But surprisingly, it didn't bother me in this book, as the focus was on the characters more than anything.
description

Gar Stitt, a bounty hunter, is a loner with a heart of ice. His focus in life is getting the job done...and keeping everyone at bay. After losing his family during his teen years, Gar has sworn to never let anyone close. So when his requested to simply locate and retrieve a space pirate, he sees the assignment beneath him...never guessing how close the pirate will get to melting the ice around his heart.

Why did Gar want to sink into his embrace and forget the universe and all the shit it piled on his shoulders?
description

Captain Faolan aka Wolf, a space pirate, seeks to strike a deal with Gar's boss, leader of the Guild, in the hopes of making money to support his ship and crew. Things begin to work against Faolan, when the bounty hunter soon becomes the hunted. Putting his plans aside, Faolan chooses to help the sexy accented Gar in discovering why he suddenly has a bounty on his head.
description

Traveling together and alone on a ship, soon leads to exploring the attraction they share. Their connection is deep, yet new to them both.
Without thinking, he leaned forward and kissed the man hard, driving his tongue into Faolan's mouth, needing to feel something- any sort of connection.
Gods, he was so tired of being alone.
Gar always trying and failing to keep his distance, fears he'll grow attached and lose someone he cares about. Faolan finds himself unable to resist the draw he feels towards Gar, but also feels the need for distance...with secrets of his own.
description

I loved these two together! The bantering and interactions were highly amusing and fun to read about.
"I mentioned there were some rules," Gar said quietly..."The first is don't mess up my ship."
"Can I mess you up instead?"
They're a match made between the stars. The story line was intriguing and kept me interested all the way. I only dropped a .2 from my rating, due to wanting more at the ending. Still in saying that, this was awesome and...perfect.

This is hard to rate. I absolutely loved the story. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes. It was really HOT, the attraction was huge and the action was super engaging!
It's my first book by this author and I really enjoyed the writing. BUT I do have a problem with one particular scene. I really don't know why the author thought it was OK to insert it into the story and why the editor left it in the book. I hate when the MC's fight and start launching punches. I don't care if they are both strong men and they usually fight because that's what they do. One is a bounty hunter and the other is a space pirate. I just hated it here... I really think this was an unnecessary scene.

Overall I was glued to the pages. And I really was happy with the ending. It was extremely emotional. I saw the next book in the series is about other characters so I am pretty content with this sweet ending for our MC's.

27% of the book, more than a quarter (no pun, just math) is sex. Very little in terms of a plot, none of the world building, the only character consistent through the 27% is Faolan, a sex-crazed asshole, which is fine, cause he is a bloody pirate. Gar, the bounty hunter, is a prim damsel, whose body and brain keep betraying her him into having sex with the revolting pirate. Don’t know what Gar did to deserve his cold and ruthless reputation, because he comes off as anything but. Both bad ass MCs turn into spineless sappy love-sick doves at about 30%. Sooner even, for Gar.

The rest of the book is the two MCs having more sex and cooing over each other’s wounds/sicknesses. A couple of battle scenes are thrown in for the sake of justifying the space-opera tag and desperately trying to steer clear from the PWP one.

The whole mess with Jason, the head of the bounty hunters guild, is plain silly. Jason is TSTL, it's as simple as that, and it's a wonder he is still breathing in the beginning of the book.

My overall impression of this book is like watching a movie while doing other things. You get the plot, you observe the characters, you see them going through the motions, but you don’t connect.

One star.
Will not continue with the series.

This story drew my in and never let go. I couldn't get enough of Gar and Faolan as their chemistry was off the charts. Scorching.
It took a while for them to learn to trust each other but in the end, it was glorious.

I read this story and had to think about it for a while. I'm mixed about it because I really enjoy space opera. I also love Ms. d'Abo's writing. Now that I'm totally into m/m erotica, I thought I'd really enjoy this story. There are parts to it I like. The overt sexual banter between Gar and Faolan is hawt and locker room dirty talk. The physical sex between the two is pretty hawt for the most part. I like it rough and I like it hard. There is one scene in here between Gar and Faolan that is a bit off. I mean, I'm okay with this kind of sex. What disturbed me is that this is an erotic romance where the sex is an enhancement not the focal point like in a dub-con/non-con. Whilst I'm jaded enough to take the violation in stride, it did make me feel a little ill at ease.

Overall, I did enjoy this story and I liked the two anti-heroes. This is a story where the ones in the right may not be the ones with the might. I like the underdog stories where they have to overthrow or outwit the corrupt government. Recommended for m/m space opera fans who are okay with some rough violent sex.

I really wanted to like this one.
Nope, no, no way! No Quarter by Christine d'Abo did not work for this reader. I kept getting bored and I got annoyed because the premise was tailor made for fun. Fallon was the character Lucifer from TV fun, witty, a bad-boy and Gar was a weak, willow of a man. Wait! Before you get mad at me that really was what I thought of the entire read, yes every page.

For the most part I enjoyed the story. The world building wasn't the strongest I've ever seen, this story was more character based than world based. I enjoyed the banter between both MCs.

There were two things that IMO took this story from what was great to just good:

In one scene, Gar gets angry with Faolan & beats him until he's unconscious. Then of course, he's instantly remorseful. When Faolan regains consciousness, he tells Gar of course it's okay he understands Gar is under a lot of stress & he was provoked. And I'm like "WTF!!!!!" No, this is not okay. Beating your lover unconscious is never okay. And in all the reviews I skimmed, only one other even mentions this incident. If this were a het story, people would have been blasting the author!

At the end of the story Gar & Faolan are bantering about Faolan using Gar for his possessions "like an good pirate would do" then Faolan replies, "Did you suddenly turn into a girl on me?” Now I'm about to climb on a soapbox. I'm really over misogyny. I don't like it when male authors write their characters are acting like girls, making it sound like being a girl is a negative thing. But it's even worse when a female author does this. There's nothing funny about misogyny & having it continually thrown in books so casually just makes it harder to eliminate. Again, in all the reviews I skimmed, I only saw this mentioned once. And it wasn't by the same reviewer who had a problem with Gar beating Faolan.

I torn between 3.5 and 4. It was entertaining enough. The sex was practically molten it was so hot. I mean like really smexy and there is a lot of it. I really liked both Gar and Faolan (much more in the beginning than in the end though). The plot was engaging and the writing fine.

But I also had a few issues with the story. To begin with there was the fairly drastic change in attitude that both men took in order to fall into each-others arms the first few times. One minute their at each-others throats, amped up and barley restraining themselves from murdering each-other, the next they're having hot passionate sex. This I could buy (given the extenuating circumstances) except that they were suddenly tender, considerate lovers. I would have at least expected angry sex, but no, it was all soft embraces and 'I'll take care of you'. Then there was Mace. What are the chances of that happening? Realistically almost none, but paradoxically I also found it painfully predictable. The same could be said for the bad guy. Could he really have been responsible for ALL OF THAT?

This was a fairly erotic M/M read, but at it's core it really is a romance. Two lonely, broken men find each-other and heal each-other's wounds. I have to admit I preferred them hard and broken to romantic and fragile, but that's just me really. I'm not a firm believer of the requisite HEA. As a Amazon freebie I was more than happy with it. I even considered getting the sequel, but opted instead to see if it ever comes up for free.

DNF @ 33%. No rating.

This wasn't my thing at all. It turns out that I misread the summary and missed the erotica label that others have applied to it, which were the main reasons this didn't work for me.

The setup is very, very typical of Bad Boy romances. Faolan is The Bad Boy. He's the baddest bad boy to ever exist and he's very scary and very dangerous...but he's also very sexy and that's the most important part. Gar is the typical Good Girl. Oh, sorry. Good Boy. He has very strong principles when it comes to sex and criminal activity which he's held onto for decades...until he comes face to face with The Bad Boy. From that moment, his panties get so wet that he loses the ability to think rationally and his principles and previously referenced dislike of Faolan go out the airlock because there are sexy times to be had. Reader who enjoy this type of setup will love this because the author doesn't miss a single step along this well traveled road and the writing is enjoyable.

To the author's credit, there's some attempt at giving the characters depth and giving the story a plot. The MCs don't just fall into bed for no reason but they do so because of the good old Sex Pollen trope, which has been a PWP trope used by fanfic writers for decades. In addition, the whole reason the MCs are in the same place at the same time also comes with some explanation, despite the premise having little logic and being filled with stupidity.

You see - Gar is a bounty hunter and he was hired to capture Faolan, who is the captain of a pirate crew who go around raiding ships. As previously established, Faolan is the Baddest Bad Boy to ever exist and Gar is the Most Epic Bounty Hunter to ever exist, so this hunt would seem like a tough one. Except it's not because they both get distracted by how sexy the other person is. To Faolan's credit, the guy actually wanted to get caught because selling the thought-stone to the bounty hunter guild is essential for his and his crew's futures (it only makes sense if you ignore the question of why Faolan wouldn't want to sell it to the highest bidder instead of this specific group). So having Faolan put up no resistance to being arrested by Gar and immediately offering up the stone made sense. The problem was that Gar didn't know about any of this yet he's never suspicious over a supposed criminal mastermind letting himself get captured so easily.

But Gar's stupidity didn't end there. In fact, it stretched from the start of the story to the point where I DNF'd. Let me list just a few things that this supposed very experienced and very capable bounty hunter did along the way:

+ Arresting Faolan and handcuffing him only to remove the handcuffs and give Faolan his sword back after Faolan agrees to bring Gar to the stone. Sweetie, the criminal doesn't need his hands free and he certainly doesn't need his weapons in order to tell you the coordinates of where his ship is. In fact, it was a massive security risk to your ship and yourself to do either, never mind both.

+ Not only does Gar give Faolan his sword back, but he doesn't bother searching the man. I guess it doesn't matter that Faolan had several knives hiding on him, since Gar-The-Idiot handed him his sword back, but still.

+ When Gar brings Faolan to his ship, he a) doesn't put Faolan into a cell and b) allows Faolan to roam around a common area of the ship where Gar has a safe that holds his most precious belonging (a stopwatch that belonged to his deceased father).

+ After they have sexy times, Gar allows Faolan to have a shower, share his bed for a post-sex nap and then hang around the cockpit with him. The two of them acted like they've been buddies for years or were an established couple, despite them having been sworn enemies only hours before. I DNF'd after their ship is attacked and Gar allows Faolan access to his ship's weapons to fire on the enemy.

+ Gar's absurd trust in Faolan made no sense and had no basis behind it but the author kept insisting that Gar didn't trust Faolan and this made Faolan Very Sad. It was ridiculous.

+ The smut scenes were on high on the heat scale but the lack of chemistry between the MCs and the fact that their entire association was based on Gar being a dumbass soured the scenes for me. I was constantly cringing, thinking of Gar putting himself into one vulnerable situation after another with a man who had a reputation for being dangerous and violent, who he had known for a few hours.

Overall, this wasn't my thing. Based on the many positive reviews, readers who went into this knowing what to expect were very happy with the results so if this is your kind of thing, then you should check it out. For me, this is yet another sci-fi romance to hit the DNF pile.

Reviewed for: Where the Night Kind Roam

I haven’t read a M/M book and a while and picked this one up as a rec from Sarah from www.feelingfictional.com . We both enjoy Christine D’Abo as a general rule and this one did not disappoint. I enjoyed it much more than I was expecting. Faolan was quite funny and loved messing up Gar’s perfectly ordered routine. Gar likes structure and Faolan is getting into his life and messing everything up. It’s taking Gar well out of his comfort zone but he can’t seem to stay away from Faolan.

The sexual tension between these two is actually quite heated. In the beginning Gar is drugged by a sexual stimulant and of course Faolan is happy to offer up his services. They have approximately 3 days to enjoy each other’s company before they reach Faolan’s ship and they plan to make the most of it. When Gar is betrayed they team up and we embark on a crazy erotic trip across space.

It’s a fairly short read but a very enjoyable one. Faolan and Gar have sizzling chemistry and endearing feelings towards one another. But their relationship has a time limit as all is not what it seems with Faolan. Find out what he is hiding and read this book!

The writer did a good job with the writing in the story. The world created wasn’t full but what was given was very well detailed. I think though that the author made it a bit shallow. There was very little background ever given about the world. You are actually left knowing very little about what seems to be a major conflict within this world. Also this is an action type adventure but I really didn’t feel the excitement of that type of read. It seemed like the sex scenes lasted the longest of anything.

The characters were vivid. I loved their attitudes. Gar’s decline in character from this cold fighter to a much warmer one was well done. I think because of this shift some readers will be turned off. Gar’s character in the beginning makes a much better read for some. I get that the character was hiding but there is something about a ridged man giving in to love that just makes some of us gush.

The read was good but not great. It just felt a little to cliché. It becomes boring and the characters didn’t click with me. I didn’t get into the feel of the book so it wasn’t what it could have been.

I thought this was my first book by Christine d’Abo, but it seems I read one from the library that I forgot about. I enjoyed this book a lot and gave it 4 stars even though the beating Gar gave Faolan was terribly upsetting and didn’t really make much sense to me. Also, Faolan’s reaction didn’t seem real. I can’t believe that after being beaten so badly that I would so quickly forgive my abuser. Other than this one strange scene everything else about the book was great.

Faolan is flirty and sexy and Gar is a pure stubborn Alpha. The sex scenes were very well done. And the fact that just couldn’t seem to keep their hands off each other was fun too. The book has a good plot. Even if I figured out the mystery almost immediately.

ARC provided by the publisher through Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words in exchange for an impartial review.

Bounty hunter Gar Stitt is assigned the job of capturing the legendary space pirate Faolan Wolf. But the captor becomes the captive, figuratively, when the two find the heat between them combustible. Though unsuitable, their attraction grows and Gar begins to feel things he’s never even allowed himself to consider before. And when Gar is betrayed by the man who rescued him when his family was killed, Wolf is there to help him as the two embark on a journey of revenge.

But what Gar finds along the way is love—a feeling that he hasn’t felt since he was a young man and he had to identify his dead sister’s body. And Wolf loves him in return, though he’s reluctant to admit it since he knows his days are numbered. Surprises are in store for both men, but they find that together they can overcome the seemingly insurmountable odds.

I was a little nervous when I first started reading this story, as I was informed of a severe beating that occurs in the early part of the book, and I read some negative reviews about it. I took over for a reviewer who couldn’t finish the book but told me what to expect. So with trepidation, I arrived at that point in the story, but I found that my perspective was a bit different from some of the other readers/reviewers, and although I didn’t like what occurred, at that point I could understand why it happened the way it did. By the end of that segment of the book, without realizing it, the characters had captured my interest, and I started to look forward to their story. I definitely need to pass on the warning of graphic violence, however. It is very evident that it will be a trigger to those who do not want to read about it.

On the other hand, once those early scenes were out of the way, the development of the relationship between the men, their pursuit of the man who destroyed Gar’s family, Gar’s reunion with a long-lost family member, the exciting space battles, and the rush against time to find a medication for Wolf make this book a very enjoyable read.

No Quarter by Christine D’Abo was a fabulous space adventure! The first in D’Abo’s Bounty series, I can’t wait to read the next two books.

This book drew me in from beginning to end. I was completely engrossed and could not put it down. I honestly only meant to check it out when I picked it up at eleven o’clock at night…fast forward five hours and I was almost done but couldn’t keep my eyes open!

There was so much banter. I love snappy dialogue and this book had it in spades–even during sexy times. I just adored it. Faolan and Gar were hilarious in their own ways.

Oh and Faolan totally reminded me of Captain Malcom Reynolds (Nathan Fillion on “Firefly“). They have that same swagger and sass. And sex appeal.

Christine’s characterizations of Gar and Faolan were so vivid that I could clearly picture them in my head. Their mannerisms were clear and concise–Gar was always holding himself stiff while Faolan would throw himself into chairs–and they perfectly personified their control vs. carelessness personalities.

I don’t read a lot of sci-fi but I devoured No Quarter. The characters were phenomenal and there was enough action to keep me on the edge of my seat.

I kept feeling like I'd read this but I never have. I did realize I have read a later entry in the series - so that's probably why the characters felt familiar. I enjoyed the story of Gar and Faolon/Wolf - love the idea of space pirates, bounty hunters, and cool gadgets and gizmo's in this SciFi novel.

However - there is too much sex. I would have traded a scene or two for more exposition about the world. Not that I didn't enjoy the sex- it was hot----but it comes at the expense of really understanding how the world works. As it is SciFi that makes it more difficult to stay engaged.

4 Stars mostly because I did not see the twist with Mace coming - and I might even be ok with reading the next book even if it has a girl in it (I never say that).

This book was a surprise for me. I never read anything from this author before because I was convinced she only wrote het romance.

This is a solid sci-fi book with two interesting (not to mention hot) men. I wish we got to see more of the villain as well as more explanations about the world (Loyalists and Guild made me curious, I like sci-fi politics), but in the end I was very happy with the book. I see that the second book in the series is m/f/m, so it's not for me at this time, but there is another m/m sequel coming out soon and I will definitely pick it up. I think that's the best recommendation I can give.

This was book 1 in the "Bounty" series. I didn't really connect with the main characters of this book. This was an enemies to lovers read. When bounty hunter Gar is given a simple locate-and-retrieve mission, he's convinced it's a waste of his skills. Captain Faolan is one of the most prolific space pirate in the galaxy. Gar is forced to work with Faolan when he becomes the hunted. I did find the story silly at times especially with Jason, the head of the bounty hunters guild. There was also a lot sex in this book we also learn that Faolan has a disease that's killing him. When I picked this book I didn't realize that it was a space opera. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling.

Being the best bounty hunter the Guild has often sends Gar on difficult assignments. The Guild sending him out on a retrieval bounty is a simple in and out job. Once complete he can go find a hole on a backwater planet and enjoy some much needed peace, quiet, and relaxation. What he gets is anything but.

Life as a space pirate is the only thing Captain Faolan Wolf knows. He’s got an amazing ship, a phenomenal crew he’d do anything for, and an item he needs to get rid of for the highest price possible and he has the plan to get the item to the people that will pay the most for it. Faolan has reached the notorious status he has by being wily and sharp. He has a plan for everything and several contingency plans for that.

Neither Gar nor Faolan were prepared for the hell that would rain down on them once they put the plan into motion. Forced to spend time is Gar’s speedy little cruiser gives them time to explore an attraction that neither expected. The more Faolon does his sexy flirty banter thing the more Gar notices that he enjoys it. The time together also allows them to see through their walls. The real men behind the façades make them want to tear down what remains of those walls and really get to know the other. It makes for not only an enjoyable read, but a very sexy romance too.

Sci fi romances work for me for one of the reasons paranormal romances work for me, the author can make stuff up and still make it work. I like to just get lost in my books. Thinking too hard on how something works can just be distracting sometimes. I went into No Quarter looking for an enjoyable read. I got that and a seriously hot romance. I met enough of the crew member of the Belle Kurve that I’m looking forward to getting my hands on Christine’s next Bounty book.

No Quarter was a delightful mixture of meaningful romance blended with good ole fashioned space smut. And the author did a good job balancing both, which prevented No Quarter from becoming a bit of silly erotica. The story moves quickly for the most part and, while the plot is somewhat contrived, it didn’t completely abandon originality. The writing is generally crisp and while I would have enjoyed a bit more world building, the author gave us enough creation for plausibility. There’s a lot of fun to be found in No Quarter, but a fair bit of angst too, which made for a really enjoyable read. I give kudos to the author because it’s no easy task to find a perfect blend that keeps a book from becoming too inane or too smarmy.

Both Gar and Wolf are intriguing, relatively well developed characters and it is truly their shared grief that brings them together. Sometimes this is through sex, but at other times its couched in conversations that carry a nice measure of humor and depth. They work well as a couple primarily because neither overshadows the other. Wolf understands his time is running out, but he’s intent on seeing his crew taken care of. His affected selfishness is so ingrained he doesn’t even seem to know when he’s doing the right thing, which makes his character all the more complex and endearing. Gar is a little harder to connect with, but his standoffishness and bristled countenance seem believable given the context of his background and as readers it’s easy to enjoy his new found embrace of life with Wolf.

Being the best at what he does, Gar Stitt, bounty hunter extraordinaire, gets the hard jobs no one takes. A loner since his parents deaths in his youth, he relies on nobody but himself. When his next job is a simple locate and nab a space pirate-a job clearly below his pay-grade, he's unprepared for the man they call Captain Faolan Wolf!

Faolan wants to unload some extra special cargo by dealing with Gar's boss. When the bounty hunter walks into his private party with the intention of collecting Faolan, all hell breaks loose. Things do not go as planned. A betrayal is revealed and the men band together to not only survive, but plot their revenge.

While working together, both men are surprised by their attraction to the other. Neither do personal, but there is this "thing" between them. The chemistry is there! As they start to explore this new-found feeling, each of them find the life bond they never knew they were looking for, and ultimately end up needing, to survive.

I absolutely loved this book! The characters are strong, the plot engaging, and the sex is hot! Who ever knew space pirates and bounty hunters could be such fun! No Quarter was a seriously smoking read! Adventure, suspense, drama all make this a highly entertaining story! A great start to Christine d'Abo's Bounty series!
