TW: discussions on fertility, breeding, and non-consensual gender transitions

FREEZING REIGN was at once one of the most engaging and one of the scariest dystopian novels I’ve read, perhaps because the idea of a virus that mutates quickly and decimates a part of the world population hits close to the COVID nightmare and I can easily imagine a future with the sort of scientific advancements shown in this book. Most of all, I found the extreme measures people took when faced with the threat of extinction realistically cruel, haunting and very difficult to stomach. I recommend this read to readers who love the dystopian genre with a hint of romance subplot, but please be aware of the content warnings going in!

There were two things I especially loved about this book. One was the relationship between Mirari and Aaron. I just really loved their banter every single time they were in a scene together, and since friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes…without spoiling, I was really hoping for circumstances to make this romance possible. And they did! While the romance itself was not the main focus of the story, it was certainly one of the elements I was most engaged in, which only made me more stressed when 1) Mirari was in constant danger and 2) it was uncertain whether or not Aaron could be trusted.

What I didn’t expect to enjoy so much were the feminals. Robots and all things AI are usually not my friends, but I couldn’t help but love the bond forming between Mirari and her two feminal companions, Rose and Daisy. I admit, I’m rooting for a sort of Detroit: Become Human twist in the future books. My girls deserve all the happiness!

Overall, this was a really enjoyable dystopian read for me, and it’s perfect if you like reads that keep you questioning and your heart pumping! The big reveal at the end has me very curious for the next installments!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

This is a dystopian thriller with a bit of romance that’s about 370 pages. I’ve seen a few books play with the concept of the last girl on Earth. The last one I read was a YA novel called the Last She. I like how Freezing Reign carefully considered the terrifying aspects of this concept. Everyone’s after Mirari because they’re worried about what will happen with no pregnancies and kids. This is a super scary position to be in, but through it all Mirari stays powerful and true to herself. She’s a main character I could really root for. I also LOVED the ending and I’m super excited for the next book.

Thrilling

A phenomenal new type of dystopian story that is starting this series with a bang! Wonderful characters and a very interesting storyline. Could this really happen in the future and what if it was you? Very fast paced and action packed - I loved it and eagerly looking forward to the next installment.

What a ride!

Like many dystopian novels, Freezing Reign forces us as readers to stare in the eye scenarios that might seem very far from us…but that in fact are very possible outcomes if humanity derails. Specifically, here we are faced with the question of “what would happen if a virus decimated the entire world population with a uterus, and humanity was on the brink of extinction?” The answer is, pretty messed up things. Some conversations were uncomfortable, some actions abhorrent, and yet there is a silver lining in the good people that are willing to fight for a change, and fight to protect the last woman left alive!

The protagonist, Mirari, was one of my favorite aspects of the story. Despite the dark tone of the subject matter, her intelligence and sharp wit brought a touch of levity to the story. Having been frozen-in-time for 12 years, the questions she has in regards to the world she lives in are questions the reader would ask as well, and she reacts to things with the same mix of wonder, surprise and indignation that I felt as well. It was a great contrast to the callousness of those who have lived through the extinction of women and had to adapt to the new normal.

The romance was definitely another thing I really enjoyed. Mirari and Aaron have a friends to lovers/age gap/it’s complicated relationship, and their banter was amazing! I was rooting for them since the very beginning, and I always believed that, where Mirari was concerned, his heart was always in the right place. I wish I could say the same about her dad, but he was a character that constantly kept me on the tip of my toes. At times I trusted him—and I fully believe in his love for his daughter—but sometimes I got the feeling that his scientific ambition got the better of him, despite his belief that his actions were for Mirari’s benefit.

This was a very action-packed, engaging read, and one I recommend to fans of dystopia—especially with robots! But please be mindful that some of the content might be triggering (breeding, fertility, non-consensual gender transitions). I’m very curious for the sequel!

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

Freezing Reign was an absolutely terrifying spin on post apocalyptic fiction. In this world, a virus quickly spreads through females only. Before things get too rampant, Mirari Vega is frozen in a cryogenic chamber by her father with the hopes that she’ll be brought back once the virus has run its course. When she’s brought back 12 years later, her world has changed so much that it’s almost unrecognizable. She quickly discovers that she’s the only known female capable of reproduction and because of this, she finds herself in terrible danger.

I thought the audiobook was really good and the book was quickly paced. I did feel like Mirari conceded very quickly and without much fight when her father proposed his cryogenic idea, but otherwise the plot was paced well.

Def recommend if you like stories similar to the Handmaid’s Tale and enjoy dystopian fiction. Please be sure to check the TW, the major ones I’ve listed below.

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

TW include discussions of fertility, forced gender transitions, breeding….please feel free to DM me if you have any questions and I’ll happily answer so that you can make an informed decision about reading!

Freezing Reign was an unexpected read for me! The Handsmaid Tale meets The Terminator in this page-turning YA dystopian thriller! 👀 this story has dark themes that might be triggering for some, please check trigger warnings before reading.

The story follows a dystopian futuristic world. During the Olympic Games a deadly virus spreads out amongst the athletes and turns into a worldwide pandemic. The Olympic virus wipes out the most of the population on Earth, specially women. With exception of one…

A young woman named Mirari is frozen by her dad in a cryogenic tube to save her life. 12 years later, she wakes up to find that she is now the only woman left alive after the virus contagion. Robots known as feminals are created to fulfill that tremendous gap in society. Once her survival is discovered, she becomes hunted by men all over the world. She’s a strong female-lead who will do everything to survive and fight in this devastating world full of hungry men.

Freezing Reign by LA Goff is a YA dystopian book with a very scary virus which kills off every woman except one. Mirari wakes to find herself alone in a world where no woman lives.

The storyline is interesting. There have been other books with a similar plot but none touched on the absolutely terrifying situation of being the only real woman in a world of frustrated men like this book does.

The book could have been shorter. There were many detailed descriptions of situations that are not relevant. I call this fluff and found myself skimming through it a bit.

Character development is done well. I feel as if I know the characters. Sometimes the fluff impeded the character development but otherwise it was good.

Overall, it was a very good book. It makes the reader really think about what would happen if they are the last woman standing.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I read a story about this one in my local newspaper (author is local) and was intrigued. It was more complex and multilayered than I expected. It was also really violent and sometimes disturbing. A dystopian tale of the “last woman on earth.” I don’t want to spoil the crux of the baddies angle, but the childbirth educator in me has to point out that biologically, what they planned wouldn’t be possible (it would have to be long term farming, not a single extraction). Of course, given male legislators too frequent demonstrated lack of knowledge about women’s bodies, maybe the baddies plan is EXACTLY what controlling, clueless men would be plotting in this kind of scenario.

Such a good read. No slow starter here, it’s a page turner from page 1. Mirari is put in an impossible position and during a global pathogen that is killing only women. I really liked the unique, thought provoking story line. This blends the lines of multiple genres, I think a lot of different readers will enjoy this fast paced story.

As soon as I read this was dystopian, I knew I would love it. Mirari is a very relatable character, and I loved watching her navigate this new and scary world, first with the pathogen and then when she discovered that she’s (possibly) the only women left in the world. I was rooting for her every second. This novel was an incredible mix of dystopian, comedy, and romance. I also enjoyed the feminals and think this would make for an immersive and entertaining movie! I can’t wait to read the next book in this new series!

Freezing Reign is a young adult dystopia book with elements of romance, sci-fi and thriller. The book is divided into 3 parts, the first taking place during an apocalyptic disease, and the next 2 parts taking place 12 years later.

The story follows the perspective of 18-year-old Mirari. She’s a relatable character that I enjoyed following over the course of the book. The book is well written, and the action throughout kept my attention. I thought the concept was interesting, and I enjoyed that I was able to experience the actual apocalyptic event in the first part of the book. The resulting world was also very interesting, and experiencing from Mirari’s perspective worked well. Some of the parts felt a little too hard to believe, but given the nature of this type of book, I guess I can’t expect everything to be completely realistic.

The book is the first in a series but does not end in a cliffhanger. However, it does have an epilogue that hints at what the next book will be about. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am interested in where things go next in the series.

I received a free review copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books, but my review is voluntary and contains my own opinions.

I received this book as an Advance Reader's Copy from Voracious Readers Only. I am quite glad that I opted to get this book as I found it to be so enjoyable. The main character, Mirari, was quite relatable and seemed like a regular teenage girl. She was living in a time of pandemic that mostly killed women, and all the women and girl friends in her life had now died. From the time her father decided to put her in a cryogenic state to preserve her as perhaps the world's only woman, I was hooked. I enjoyed the "feminal" robots that were created to give men female companionship. And loved the fact that we were dealing with Texas ranchers and businessmen in the Austin area. I did wonder why the time frame was back in what I think was the 1980's. Maybe to give us a sense of nostalgia. I definitely would recomment this book to lovers of Dystopian futures. I am interested to read the next book in the series to see how Merari and her remaining friend manage to get through the post-pandemic world taht was left to them.

The synopsis of this book made me want to read it and truth being told as soon as I got it I had to read it, this book takes place in a different world than us, but at the same time very similar to our own, where a sickness that kills all women, and before that our main character is infected her father makes her go under a cryogenic “death” for her to awake when the sickness is over or people find a cure…

uhmm the synopsis is what I really liked of the story, and I will throw out there, some people will love this story, but I was expecting a bit more, it definitely reminded me of “Cherry 2000” a movie that was released in 1987, because of the feminals, the robots that are all copies of women that were long gone… this world is messed up, young kids are kidnapped and made trans just to please powerful men, actually this world is very messed up, I don’t want to give spoilers, my favourite part of this book was the first part, and the third part goes really fast, I had to go back and re-read to understand what is going on, it had romance but I don’t really see the point of it… I wish I could only give high praise but I wasn’t the right person to review this book…

Thank you VoraciousReaders for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Texas and back.

L.A. Goff's dystopian thriller Freezing Reign throws readers headfirst into a stark post-apocalyptic world devoid of women. Protagonist Mirari Vega emerges from cryogenic sleep to find herself a coveted prize in a violent battle for fertility. Goff quickly ratchets up the action as Mirari goes on the run, evading capture in the lawless landscape.

The breakneck pace allows little room for exposition, demanding readers piece together the catastrophe that killed off women. While risky, this framing heightens suspense and immerses one in Mirari's confusion. The resulting adrenaline rush carries the story, hurtling towards a cliffhanger ending.

For sci-fi fans craving brisk, cinematic thrills, Freezing Reign delivers. Goff blends brisk pacing with thought-provoking concepts, from shifting gender dynamics to mankind's reckless ambition. However, emotional depth occasionally falls by the wayside amid relentless action. Nonetheless, this high-octane page-turner offers an exhilarating dystopian rush.

Reading the synopsis had me so excited. It immediately made me think of The Handmaid's Tale! I’m glad to say this one didn’t let me down! It was fast paced from the very beginning. The main character Mirari was fierce and set in her ways which I loved to see. It’s always nice to have a strong female character in YA books. This book is dystopian and is a bit dark but I think it is still suitable for teenagers. While it deals with some heavier topics I don’t think it is anything they don’t already know. I must say the author did a great job with descriptions. Sometimes I struggle getting into dystopian/fantasy stories because of the writing but that wasn’t an issue here. Keeping this review short to avoid spoilers. I highly recommend this one and can't wait to see where the story goes.

3.5 rounded up.

This is a solid start to a dystopian series. I have to admit I haven't read anything with the same premise. I thought the author's writing was easy to follow, especially with the science aspect. I was a little confused on what year all this was supposed to be taking place. It seemed like maybe present day was in the 90s? Which made the technological leaps a little unrealistic. This story has a bit of romance. The romantic that I am, would have liked more. I wanted more of a lead up to their romance after she was reawakened. The cliffhanger was nice and makes you want to read book 2. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to dystopian fans.

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. All the thoughts are my own.

It has been awhile since I have read a dystopian and this one did not disappoint!
Mirari is likable. She is a perfect blend of kindness while also standing up for herself and being no man's bargaining chip! It was interesting to see how men would respond to a world where all the women died! They still kiiind of function but now there are territories and rulers of those territories. There are also robot women that, well, are there for the men.
Something really unique about this one is that it actually takes place in the 80s and 90s! So it was fun to see that!
There is a sweet romance in there that I definitely want more of in the second book!
And there is a surprise ending!

What would happen if you were the only woman left in the world? That's the premise of this book; after 12 years cryogenically frozen Mirari wakes in a world of only men and feminals (female robots) and that's where the adventure gets going.

I absolutely loved the descriptions of her waking from her cryogenic sleep, it felt real - there was no pussyfooting around the state of her body or her mind. And from then on it is a rollercoaster of a story. Aaron, Curtis and especially Rose all have a place in my heart.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series and follow their story.

All the men have gone crazy because women have died. The world descends into chaos. One day a woman is found. She was frozen and wakes up to a female robots. The poor woman is drugged and hunted by the men.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters come to life and kept me engaged with the story. I loved how the main character wasn’t just a damsel in distress. She has a gun and isn’t afraid to use it. There are depictions of physical assault, domestic violence, and the threat of sexual assault.

Man this book gave me some hardcore Lone City and Chemical Garden series vibes. The dystopian world does not favor women, at all. There’s in fact a virus that takes us out. And the spooky vibes. All there. And now. One woman is all that’s left thanks to being frozen. Man. Binge worthy but also so much spook. If you love friends to lovers too though you’ll love this. And there are some triggering moments so be sure to check and message if any questions !

Well-written with strong female lead
Book one starts in the middle of a crisis that could happen today—a global pandemic that only kills women. Good action, descriptions, and emotion. The writing style feels like Faith Hunter or the Boboverse. The sole condition for her volunteering for the experiment was a hoot. The second act jumps into the future. The word dystopian in the title is code for the trope where all men are thieves, killers, and rapists.

Wow! I was so surprised by this book.

I couldn't read this book fast enough. I just had to find out what happened next. Reading Mirari's story was fascinating. While the book was based in the past, some of the technology seemed like it was from the future. Definitely an interesting take on a dystopian world and the possibilities that could come from it. I can't wait to read the next book.

Over all a good book.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The only problem I had with it was the closest relationships were with the robots. She had more contact with them then the humans. Even I liked the robots better than the people. MFC needs more warm feelings towards people. I still love the robots though.

It's a much better thriller than at first glance!

Freezing Reign: A Dystopian Thriller (The Reign Serues Book 1) by L. A. Goff began to spike my interest just as Mirari began to realize that instead of ice cream, her papa's freezer was being developed to hold something of much bigger value.

Interesting but...

A different take to the usual, and it would have been brilliant if there had been less plot holes on the journey. I think it would have been better had the author not taken it to such an extreme (last woman in the world). I would like the clearly sentient feminals to be set free.

⭐️3.0⭐️ Easily a 3 star read. The plot was engaging and it’s a very interesting social commentary on being the last woman alive… what a thought provoking prompt. However, the ending really didn’t deliver. Take it or leave it, but it was an interesting story.

Surprisingly good

I enjoyed the book. I kinda groaned when it started out with "fembots", my word, not the author's.. But it quickly grabbed my attention and I finished it in 24 hours. The main character is a delight.
Can't wait for book 2!
