Ai Ore! Love Me! #4

Ai ore! Love me! Vol. 4

Rate this book

I bought this book on a whim and am now thoroughly irritated that I spent money on it. The premise looked interesting enough and I liked the first few chapters, with the manly girl/girly boy combination and the genderbending hijinks they got up to. I thought the rest of it would be the same type of fun.

Akira, though adorable, rubbed me the wrong way very quickly with his self-admitted taking advantage of Mizuki's sadness. The romance, even though I knew it was coming, seemed a bit abrupt. Akira's strangely hot when he turns on the smoulder (which got to be about once every two pages--think I'm exaggerating?), so Mizuki falls "in love" with him right off? I was willing to dismiss it as typical teenage drama and move on, but that willingness only extended so far. Akira's bratty and manipulative behavior evolves into borderline sexual assault and we never hear an apology for it, while Mizuki agonizes over her every mean word. The whole thing starts to stink of an abusive relationship--and this is all in the first half!

The last mini-story arc was what really got me steamed, however. Akira continues to push the envelope until Mizuki asks him to slow things down, which--shockingly--he agrees to do. Silver lining? Perhaps, but overshadowed almost immediately after by a plot twist saved from predictability only because I couldn't believe that this manga was willing to go quite that far. Thus in the space of two chapters we have two psycho lesbians, drugged beverages, two counts of almost-rape for no real reason, a girl about to let herself be raped because no matter what her heart still belongs to her boyfriend (WHY MIZUKI WHY HAVE YOU NO SELF-RESPECT AT ALL), and a general lack of anything or anyone likeable.

Then, the final straw. Our girly-man "protagonist" (in the very loosest sense of the word) offers to let a classmate have his way with him if said classmate will rape the girl who almost did the same to Mizuki. This classmate takes the deal (What. The. F. Do none of these characters have any morals at all?), and the book ends with Akira watching the whole disturbing scene with an equally disturbing look on his face, proclaiming that he will do anything for Mizuki in a way that is--wouldn't you know it?--disturbing. At this point I'm struggling to recall any redeeming quality Akira possesses, and coming to the slow realization that he has none.

This book's potential was completely wasted. Even the genderbending aspect of the whole thing is pushed to the back because Mizuki and Akira act exactly the same as every other creepy, unbalanced shojo relationship--Mizuki blushes and cries a lot and relies on Akira to save her, while Akira is a pushy and possessive little sex maniac. Neither character gets any backstory, the band plotline is almost completely ignored, and forget about developing friendships between the girls. Is this sick, abusive bullcrap considered "hot"? Is it considered grounds for any kind of healthy relationship? I spent half the book mentally screaming "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! WHAT AM I READING?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"

Simply put: Not recommended, don't waste your time.

Just like in everything else, within the medium of manga, you will find exceptional storytelling and you will also find trash. Sadly for me, Ai Ore! falls into the trash category. I really should have known better because before I try most any series, I will meticulously review both the story (what reviews is it getting from sources I trust?) and the mangaka (what else has this author written?). If I had done either of these things, this would have been a no-brainer. But, as I mentioned in another review, the librarian at my library showed me a shipment of new manga and gave me first choice. I saw this volume, vaguely remember hearing about it, so thought I'd check it out.

The first couple of chapters gave me an Ouran High School Host Club meets Love*Com vibe with an art style similar to Skip Beat!. Since I liked all of those titles, I thought this series may turn out to be kind of fun. How wrong I turned out to be as that happy vibe quickly turned to an uh-oh, this is giving me a creepy Twilight vibe with controlling male love interest who takes advantage of silly naive main girl character. I really dislike weak female protagonists. I really really dislike controlling manipulative "relationships". If I had read up on the mangaka, I would have learned that this seems to be a staple for her writing, and that in Ai Ore!, these roles are actually toned down somewhat compared to her other stories. Then the last part of the volume was not only creepy, but suddenly got really smutty, not to mention anteing up the creepiness factor with an attempted rape. *shuddering*

It's just bad. Bad relationships. Bad character development. Bad vibes. Not recommended. Ugh. I had to pull out a volume of Kamisama Kiss afterward to clear my mind and remind myself why I love manga so much when it's in the exceptional category. :)

I bought this manga on a whim, the back blurb sounded interesting and I was sad after hearing that TokyoPop was closing its USA Office. All I can say is WOW...was not expecting what came out of this manga at all; the back cover doesn't do it justice and doesn't actually tell what the story is about. Add to the fact that this manga is quite bigger than typical size and it was a fantastic buy.

First I must say that this does major gender bending as well as challenge the ideas of what a girl and boy should be. I loved it! Mizuki is part of an all girl band at an all girl school. The only thing is that her and her band mates all look like boys... beautiful metro/androgynous boys but boys all the same. Her best friend is moving away, and now not only is she dealing with that but that means her band needs a new lead singer. Enter Akira... whom I adored more than anything... he is short, beautiful and goes to an all boys school. He is the princess of that school (if you have no clue what I'm talking about, it's a Japanese Anime culture thing) but he also has a huge crush on Mizuki. He auditions to be in the band, but Mizuki wants nothing to do with boys or him. There are a lot of side plots, and a ton happens in the manga... the ending might also make you uncomfortable (potential rape) but I have faith it won't go that far in the second volume... FYI it wasn't a scene between Mizuki and Akira so rest easy.

The reason why this was so gender bending was that Mizuki looked cool and tough, while Akira was sweet and small and innocent looking. Yet (Teen rating here) when he kissed her, shoved her down, or grabbed her arm, he was all man, it was like the size/perception didn't matter, even Mizuki trusted him later on to keep her safe and called out to him. I am highly anticipating the next installment and am pleased that not only is it coming out in August but the third volume is scheduled for November. If you are on the fence give it a try, I loved it.

I got curious about this after hearing about Shinjo Mayu's fight with Shougakukan (how they wanted her to just crank out Kaikan Phrase clones, until she got sick of it and left them for Asuka), and looked up some reviews on Amazon, where I read that you didn't need to read the original Shougakukan series (Ai wo Utau Yori Ore ni Oboreru), so I went ahead and ordered the first volume of AiOre. And, indeed, I didn't feel lost at all starting there (okay, it did take me a minute to realize that all the band members except Akira are girls), though I have decided to go back and get the original series, just because I'm curious about that also. I really loved this volume, which was like...Pheromomania Syndrome x (Kaikan Phrase - sex) i.e. Really tall girl ("Prince of the Girls School") dates adorable short boy ("Princess of the Boys School"), together they face issues that may or may not relate to their band. (In the first two volumes we see them being a band for about five seconds.) It was really funny and cute; Akira is totally adorable and I love his evil streak.

Not that I have much knowledge or experience with manga, but I think I picked this one up based off of a short summary and recommendation I read online. I was curious about the gender play which is what initially intrigued me... but that's about all I could appreciate from this manga. Everything else is pretty stereotypical in terms of gender and heterosexual relationships, and then all the forcefulness and not to mention rape at the end was pretty awful. The idea of gender play that I thought was going to be there from start to finish just withered in front of my eyes.

So it turns out I can handle constant damselification or a completely improbable plot with no relation to reality but asking me to take both at once is too much. 1.5 stars

A volte voglio solo farmi male.

L'ho trovato senza capo né coda. I personaggi principali non hanno sostanza, anche se forse quelli secondari sembrano decisamente più simpatici.

Ormai l'ho comprata e la leggerò, ma mi sa che servirà solo a tenere bassa la mia media voto.

Finally, a non-terrible volume! SA is only joked about instead of on-screen in this one!

I like Bambi-chan. He's too pure.

I would sometimes start to think that I like Ran as a character, because he's interested in both the male and female protagonist; but then he always ends up attempting something non-con. God, I hate this series.

I bought volumes 1-4 secondhand for cheap, and I've regretted it since volume 1. Would not recommend.

**

A thought I had while reading: would this series be better if they just went full hentai with it? (Probably not, but the thought occured.)

3.5

would have been a whole 4 but the last chapter again sort of dug into nonsenses non-con randomness. That isn't to say the rest of the manga wasn't a little ridiculous. like a mid episode of Ouron. I really liked Akira and Mizuki working together this time around against a common issue. it had some cute moments. Bambi-chan is hands down the best addition to this story. I luff him.

I absolutely love Shinjou Mayu's work, especially Sensual Phrase. When I realized this was by her, I hunkered down into a big comfy armchair expecting to have my mind blown.

It wasn't blown. Before I start having people object to my review, let me explain my stance.

The artwork in this was amazingly beautiful, just as you'd expect something by SM to be. She very lovingly illustrates her books, bringing the characters to life & helping to draw you into them. In this aspect the book was absolutely wonderful & I just couldn't get enough of it.

As far as story goes, it's a great idea & I think it was pretty well done for the most part. Where the book went wrong with me was that it tried a little too hard to introduce far too many characters & situations at once. What makes some of her other work so wonderful is that she eased into the large cast & the various situations. I love series where we have a large ensemble but this just felt a little jumbled at times. Eventually everything settles down to where the main 3-4 characters come into focus but the beginning just felt really scattered to me & it just took a while for everything to "work" in my opinion.

All things considered, it's still good & I'm definitely looking forward to reading the second volume. This isn't Mayu's best work but it's something that I'd still recommend to anyone who loves a good romance.

2.5 .. I love the female group Blaue Rosen; the 'gender bender' REALLY confused me at first, but I got used to it.. sort of ...

I hate Akira.. I hate him.. I don't like short boys going after tall girls, it's just not my thing. And the bipolarish switching from an adorable moe character to 'a man' wasn't very convincing. It seemed so out of character every single time. He doesn't even look like the kind of character that would be 'a man' around girls...

Oh man, this is sooooooooo cute and romantic.the characters are soooooooo cute, escepially akair and mizuki.First i thought akair was a girl, seriesley he looks really like a girl.I love the part when he gets so manley (its hot).Mayu Shinja, you rock.

Okay the story is like this,Akair is the male ''princess'' of his all- boys high school and Mizuki is the female ''prince'' of her all-girls high school.Akair looks like a cute little girl, but he is a male and Mizuki looks like a handsome boy,she actually a girl.

The band blaue rosen is a girls band and the lead singer is leaving to New York (Mizuki is part of this band). Akair is a huge fan of this band enen though he is a boy and he wants to be the lead singer. But Mizuki doesn't allowe it cause she hates males

ITS CUTE AND ROMANTIC!!!!
can't waite to read the other series!!

I loved this Manga all the way to the end. It is engaging and definitely unique, so it gets at least 3 stars. But the final scene of volume 1 left me disgusted and unsettled. I understand the intent was to be shocking and intense, but I can't condone the acts that are committed even in a story. The implication is that it is justified because of the victim's own attempt to victimize another.

Since the violent act is a cliffhanger I'll probably read at least volume 2. But I don't know that I can go beyond. I definitely won't feel comfortable suggesting this manga to any teen patron of any age or disposition.

I loved this book. The idea of a prince, all-female rock band and a princess male lead is what really captured my attention. The plot line is humorous and fluffy, while still going deeper into the teenaged psychology. There's humor, drama, a building romance, and quite a bit of platonic protectiveness. And while the male lead is small and adorable, he's got a bit of a dark side, so to say.

The premise was interesting. The manliest girl from an all girls' school hooks up with the girliest boy from the all boys' school. But he's too pushy and she's too weak-willed. Then there's lots of attempted rape between other characters and just ugh.

too much comedy and the main character looks like a little girl ;( (like the Raven in Akuma na Eros, where as a side character he already annoyed me)

And the story about the schools dwindling reputation is even more annoying.
