When Emily Andrew lands in the Land of Oz -- Australia, that is -- she and her hearty group of world-touring seniors know they're not in Iowa anymore. Winter is summer, drains drain counterclockwise, and all the comforts of home are, well, back home. Even Emily's love life is upside her darling detective Etienne Miceli has yet to propose, while gorgeous tour director Duncan Lazarus is vying to be more than just mates. Emily is preoccupied calming the group's jitters about the outback's killers, from sunstroke to snake bites. But when a fellow traveler turns up dead, Emily fears something far more toxic has human greed. Someone has stumbled upon a natural wonder that could turn science on its head -- was this priceless discovery the catalyst for murder? Before the dust settles, a second untimely death occurs. If Emily can't stop a killer in their tracks, this Aussie adventure just may be her last.
G'Day to Die by Maddy Hunter is the 5th book in A Passport to Peril mystery series. Emily Andrews is leading her Iowan seniors tour group on a tour of Australia when one of the tour members dies at the twelve apostles and then another is poisoned at a Barossa Valley winery. I loved this book and found it just as funny and entertaining as the others in the series. I especially liked the fact that it was set in Australia and I was familiar with all the places and attractions. I'm looking forward to the next book
This is only the second book in The Passport to Peril mystery series I have read. I quite enjoyed the latest book which had an Alaskan setting and some humorous bits. Here the humor seemed strained and fell flat for me.
Emily brings her Iowa tour group consisting of Senior citizens to Victoria State, Australia. I was hoping for some Outback or Northern Australia mystery. I do not regard Emily as a competent guide starting out by wearing 5 inch heels on a day tour. Two of the group die under mysterious circumstances. Members of the group exhibit jealousy, are in competing businesses, often complaining, or are clearly incompatible with others on tour. Emily has two suitors who have joined the tour in hopes of winning her hand in marriage. She is interested in discovering the cause of the deaths and whether something sinister is happening.
After going on some Senior group tours myself, I could recognize the similarities between some of the most irritating members of Emily’s group and people I had met on my group travels. I soon moved on to traveling by myself without the stress caused by other senior group members. There was usually at least one in every tour who invariably caused aggravation. Thankfully my group tours lacked the deaths that Emily’s groups always encounter . It was more enjoyable and a lot less expensive for me to avoid senior tours. (Personal Opinion) I was disappointed that I was unable to enjoy this story because the other book I read in the series was pleasurable and fun. Since many readers liked the book I hope others will not be dissuaded by my negative review.
I absolute love this series, but somehow this book didn't grab me as much as the others. Maybe it was because a lot was going on in my life so I couldn't concentrate as much, but it still felt a little off to me. It still was an enjoyable read with the usual funny moments. The best was the last few lines of the book ;-) Something we all hoped for happened!
I hope the next book will be as good as the others!
Omg, this was hilarious. I was giggling right from the first (and I don't think it was solely from the cold meds!). I'm not usually a fan of the Evanovich-esque type (mainly because chick-lit gives me the hives), but I really liked this book. the seniors definitely made the book - and while the mystery was meandering, it was a very enjoyable read.
Now I just have to play catch up with the first four books!
This is book #5 of a series. I found this at a used book sale and it's the first book I've read of this series. What can I say? I love that the whole premise of the series is travel to other countries. Emily accompanies a group of senior citizens from Iowa to foreign destinations where they join tour groups. In this book the senior group travels to Australia. The mystery was good and I have no complaints about the writing, except for a few things that I found bizarre. Emily has 2 boyfriends who each clamor for her hand in marriage. They are both on this trip and spend more time with each other than with her. They are also not very well developed characters. Plain vanilla. This is a bit of a spoiler: there is no such thing as insulin tablets. And I would think that crushed up diabetes pills would taste awful in a drink and the intended victim would not drink it.
Everywhere that Emily's grandmother goes she takes photos and invariably someone tells her that the plant, insect, or animal in the photo is a long-lost species and she will be famous for finding it. When official botanists or whomever come to investigate, the species has always disappeared. At first this annoyed me but I've come to think of it as just an amusing bizarre element in the story.
So to sum it up, some things in this book annoyed me but I like being an armchair traveler to a place I may never get to visit.
Read for PopSugar Reading Challenge 2021 - Prompt 45, Been on the TBR list the longest
The reason this has been on my TBR list the longest is the price on this is way high considering they take a couple of hours to read and are all pretty much the same story. They're fun, but dang they're pricey for what you get.
As noted above, they're all basically the same story - Emily Andrews takes a group of Iowa senior citizens on a tour. People die, Emily always thinks it's someone other than the culprit, and it's all neatly wrapped up by the end of the book. There's absolutely nothing wrong with these books, they're nice little fillers, and the recurring cast is generally fun.
In this story, they're off to Australia. Most of the usual cast is there, except Jack. Good use of the local fauna to misdirect the causes of death.
The group heads to Australia and is joined by Etienne and Duncan who are vying for Emily to marry them. But I found it odd that they barely spent any time with Emily.
Someone dies at their first stop and Emily's grandmother's photos are praised by the photographer on the tour, plus it seems she keeps getting pictures of supposedly extinct items.
Emily is definitely growing into her role as guide for the senior tour group and I enjoy their interactions. She does end the love triangle this time as well.
I think this series is growing on me. I like that the "heroine" never gets it right, though she does try. This one seemed a little less absurd, which I actually liked. There were a few things I didn't really get. The VERY RECENTLY former cop who does NOTHING but butt into investigations that have nothing to do with him, suddenly ignores any intrigue? And what's with the other love interest? I mean, there was a tiny bit of attraction in the last book, but why does he warrant such a big part in this one? Why is he suddenly on the same footing as the cop? Other than those questions, I enjoyed this one.
Been waiting to continue this series ended up buying it I my kindle. I like the mystery i love the characters. I will say i don't agree with who Emily chose as her fiance in the end but I understand her choice. I won't spoil who she chose. This time Emily is in Australia and by the second chapter someone is dead. Within the death they continue the tour and Duncan and Etienne are fighting for Emily. eventually another death occurs and. The end by accident Emily solves who did it. I feel she could have handled it better but was to excited to not see the signs. Overall I still like the series just wished Emily chose a different suitor
Mostly enjoyable, different kind of cozy. I couldn’t get a good feel for what Emily was supposed to look like, but I assume she’s a knockout given that she has two attractive men wooing her. She does seem a bumbling sort, which I found appealing. Parts of the story were interesting and the seniors were entertaining. For some reason, I didn’t like Nana. She did not seem very bright. The main drawback for me was the words being written as if they were to be spelled the way they would sound when spoken by a native Australian. Also, you cannot fax a photograph. They come through as black blobs, so that was not feasible.
I love the characters Nana, Emily and the rest of the elderly travelers. The ones I really don't like are the love interests Etienne and Duncan. They are both not developed enough and what we do see of them is nothing. I mean really she met Duncan like once and he was in love with her. Etienne it has been longer but mostly via email and chat none of those are basis for getting married. I also hated the way they were trying to make the Australians talk. The story line was great and actually kept me guessing till the end. I loved the descriptions of the scenery.
I love all of the Iowa seniors in the Passport to Peril series. Here we head to Australia! Oddly, both of Emily's beaus - Etienne, now retired from the Swiss Police force, and Duncan -- are along competing for her. This is getting a bit repetitive! We have two mysterious deaths and the possibility of an extinct plant and animal being seen by Nana. The wrap up is completely by accident and a little disappointing.
Sing Hallelujah, the love triangle is dead. I thought both guys were fairly useless, but better one useless man than two. The seniors were typically crazy, the locals just don't understand Iowa and that's okay. The mystery was weirdly convoluted, typical for a cozy. A good series, will continue.
G'Day to Die is the 5th of the Passport to Peril series by Maddy Hunter, a cozy mystery about a tour group from Iowa in Australia. Mostly it is a mildly humorous tale with a murder or two just thrown in to keep the plot moving along. It's kinda fun, but I would put it in the category of "chewing gum for the eyes".
I've been enjoying catching up with Emily Andrew, tour organizer extrordinaire, but G'Day was ... pushing my patience. I'll keep reading for now but this series may be pushing its luck.
This was an amazing book keeping me drawn in it, every page turn making it impossible to put down! The twists and ups and downs are amazing it's a truly well written book.
In this latest adventure in Maddy Hunter's Passport to Peril series, Emily Andrew is escorting a group of senior citizens, including her Nana, on a trip to Australia. Emily is hoping for a relaxing trip, but those hopes are shattered when one of the tour members is found dead. Nana had taken a picture of a rare plant and Emily is convinced that Claire Bellows found the plant and was murdered before she could tell anyone about her discovery. There are plenty of suspects for Emily to choose from and she begins snooping around. Emily also has other things on her mind, both Detective Etienne Miceli and tour director Duncan Lazarus claim to be in love with her and she needs to choose between the two of them. Add in another murder and Emily realizes this trip will be anything but peaceful!
"G'Day to Die" is a delightfully funny cozy mystery. Author Maddy Hunter has a nice sense of humor and word play. The ongoing plot line of Nana accidentally taking pictures of things like plants and animals that haven't been seen in years and are considered extinct was especially funny. As always, Hunter fills the book with slightly eccentric characters such as feuding couple Jake and Lola Silverthorn; mother and son Nora and Heath Acres; Conrad Carver who finds treasures in Nana's photos; photographer Guy Madelyn; and various members of a scientific conference. The Iowans are as funny as ever especially Bernice and her battles with various animals. Hunter has fun with the Australian accent but it does get to be a bit much and hard to read at times. While there are some funny scenes between Duncan and Etienne, I'm glad Hunter didn't stretch that plot line too far and had Emily choose between the two of them (long time readers probably won't be surprised at who Emily chooses). The mystery itself is okay, if a bit of a cheat at the end.
Fans of humorous cozy mysteries will enjoy not only "G'Day to Die" but the entire Passport to Peril series.
Another good book by Maddy Hunter featuring Emily Andrew, a travel companion for senior citizens. This books find them down under and it helps to read the book with an Australian accent in your mind for some of the characters.
There are a few deaths (as is the usual with Emily's trips) and Nana manages to capture some extinct plants and animals with her Polaroid (who knew they still made these!) that sets other travelers into a frenzy in trying to find them.
We also see Duncan & Etienne vying for Emily's affections, will she choose one in this novel or will we have to wait until a future book? You'll only know if you read this book!
This time "The Passport to Peril" series takes us to Australia. Once again, Emily is the tour guide of a very funny group of oldsters from Iowa. Emily has a mystery on her hands with two possible murders. While she is solving it, we find out a lot about the Australian landscape and customs. In this book Emily is posed to choose for her husband either Etienne Miceli or Duncan Lazarus (both of whom we have met in previous books). At the conclusion of this book, she actually makes her choice. You will have to read for yourself to find out who is "the one"! I am eagerly awaiting the publication of the next in the series which will be set in Scandinavia.
I love the Passport to Peril books! They are funny, silly, witty, completely unrealistic and a total riot! This series of books is about a woman who is a tour escort for senior citizens from Iowa and everywhere they go, someone gets murdered.
Maddy Hunter has a way with words and turns phrases into funny jokes wherever she can. The characters are outrageous and doing silly htings all the time while Emily (the tour escort) sees murder and gets the solution wrong everytime. Very funny!
Just like the previous "Passport to Peril" mysteries that I have read, this one was enjoyable and made me laugh out loud at times. Even for Maddy Hunter, though, the plotline was a little far-fetched at time. The characters and their behaviors were as hilarious as usual, and I liked that Emily's romantic "dilemma" was finally resolved in this book. I'll continue reading this series just because it's light, quick, and makes me laugh when I need that type of book to read.
Emily is guiding her Iowa seniors through a visit to Australia, with the added company of two suitors, both handsome, and both more than eager to marry her. Too bad she can't make up her mind. When one of their fellow tourists dies suddenly, Emily is instantly suspicious--this isn't the first tour she's led that's had a murder. Not too much productive sleuthing goes on in this one. Emily doesn't suspect the murderer until she's under attack.
More of the same as the other books in the series. Same zany characters, not much of a mystery but I love the travel aspect of the novels and the crazy situations our heroine finds herself in. The other thing I’ve noticed is that Emily’s seniors (and Jackie) are starting to take more of an active role in her investigations which makes the circumstances even more entertaining. Good series to read while on holidays.
