Rate this book
Pride, Prejudice & Permutations—twelve, what-if short stories inspired by the original Pride & Prejudice, with more than merely tolerable tales that give a glimpse into several of our beloved Pride and Prejudice characters. What if Mrs. Bennet overheard the soldiers discussing her youngest daughters in the crudest of ways?

No Less Brittle Than Beautiful
What if Mary Bennet was pushed into Wickham's arms and they are forced to marry?

Keep Your Breath to Swell Your Song
What if the five Bennet sisters were famous, anonymous singers?

And Then the Murders Began
What if Elizabeth discovered a dead body in the Netherfield library?

If Only They'd Had a Son
What if Lydia had been born a boy? Same personality, only also the heir of Longbourn.

Nothing But Officers in Her head
What if Kitty Bennet's silliness were all a disguise to hide the fact that she was brilliant cryptographer?

For I Am a Married Woman
What if Lydia Bennet demanded to marry a charming Mr. Collins in order to be the first of her sisters married?

In His Nightcap and Powdering Gown
What if Mr. Bennet fell, bumped his head, and woke up with the personality and nerves of Mrs. Bennet?

To Yield Easily
What if Bingley's abandonment of Jane caused Mr. Collins to offer for her?

Punish Him for Such a Speech
What if Elizabeth, tired of disdain from Darcy and Miss Bingley, got her revenge by boldly flirting with Darcy one night at Netherfield?

And Then the Dragons Came
What if Darcy's encounter with Elizabeth set off a cosmic change of events that revived the ancient dragons of Briton?

Pride, Prejudice & Permutations is a collection of twelve Pride and Prejudice variations that total to over 105,000 words. There is no trigger warning, but if you don't like a certain story, just skip it and move onto the next.

Those who tell the stories rule the world. ~ Author unknown

Twelve short stories, charmingly told, believably delivered, warmly descriptive.

The author asks readers to skip over any stories they didn't like. I only skimmed through one--the one about the dragons. Not my kind of tale, although I know others like them.

Lydia named Lyndon (she's a boy); Lydia, the first to marry (you won't guess who) and ten other plots.

Writing a story allows us to play with our imaginary friends when we are adults. ~ Dr. SunWolf

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: no trigger warnings per author: only a few smarmy looks, nothing graphic, violent death
>>Angst Level: low mostly
>>Source: Borrowed KU [1-19-23] with no expectations of a review. The views and opinions are my own. This was a collection of P&P what-if variations. [12] What-If stories.

[1] An Attempted Compromise: 5-short chapters + an epilogue [1 year later: ended at 9%

“What happens when Caroline Bingley and George Wickham team up to force Darcy into a compromise? Laced tea, an accidental death, and an elopement.”

If Miss Bingley offers you a cup of her special tea, refuse… for the love of… just refuse.

[2] No Less Brittle Than Beautiful: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 17%

“What happens when Lydia Bennet bumps into Mary, sending her crashing into the arms of … George Wickham? The resulting compromise at Aunt Phillips’s card party leads to a ruined reputation and a marriage neither of them wished for. Will Mary and Wickham be able to sort out their differences and find a happily ever after?”

When in company with Lydia Bennet, keep your distance. That is if you know what is good for you… stay as far away from her as possible, especially when she has been drinking the party punch.

[3] Keep Your Breath to Swell Your Song: 5-chapters + and a short epilogue: ends at 24%

“The Bonnet Family Singers are known throughout the ton for their beautiful voices. Though their performance for the prince regent threw them into the spotlight, they have chosen to keep their identities a secret. The rumors say they are daughters of a gentleman, but no one knows for sure. All Mr. Darcy knows is that there is something familiar about the way Miss Elizabeth
Bennet sings at Lucas Lodge.”

The Bonnet Family Singers received a command performance… literally from the Prince Regent. You dare not refuse. Darcy and Bingley were in the audience. The ladies wore deep bonnets and masks to hide their identities. No one knew who they were. Fast forward and you have Darcy putting the pieces together at Lucas Lodge.

[4] But Then the Dragons Came: 5-chapters + a short epilogue: ends at 32%

“Rumors that dragons have been spotted in the north have hit Meryton, but Elizabeth Bennet is sure that the sightings are nothing more than hysteria. Plagued with migraines since her eighteenth birthday, she is struck down by one at the Meryton assembly, preventing her from dancing. This is cruelly remarked on by Mr. Darcy, a newcomer to the neighborhood. Before she can confront him about his behavior, a dragon is spotted flying over the town, and everyone panics. How will the arrival of dragons change Pride & Prejudice?”

Don’t get your dragons in an uproar. No pun intended… ah, heck, pun intended.

[5] Nothing But Officers in Her Head: 5-chapters + a short epilogue: ended at 40%

“Catherine Bennet, aka Kitty, is known as being her younger sister’s shadow. But what if that is all a disguise to hide who she truly is—one of the most renowned cryptographers of the Napoleonic Wars?”

In her sister’s shadow… that’s code for trouble.

[6] In His Nightcap and Powdering Gown: 5-chapters + a short epilogue: ends at 49%

“Mr. Bennet falls and bumps his head after teasing his wife about not visiting Mr. Bingley. When he awakens, he is just as flighty and unstable as Mrs. Bennet! Dressing in his nightcap and powdering gown while calling for his salts, how will Mr. Bennet’s new personality affect the behavior of his wife and daughters?”

Mr. Bennet had a PJ Day… or week.

[7] Punish Him for Such a Speech: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ended at 57%

“Elizabeth Bennet is stuck at Netherfield, tending to her elder sister. Tired of being the object of disdain for both Mr. Darcy and Miss Bingley, Elizabeth gets her revenge in a unique manner—flirting brazenly with Mr. Darcy one evening as she and Miss Bingley take a turn about the room. How will Mr. Darcy react?”

Slight religious element. A Sunday sermon gives Darcy a new perspective on his attitude. There is a different bride for Mr. Collins.

[8] To Yield Readily: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 65%

“Mr. Bingley is a man who is easily persuaded by the strong opinions of his friend and sisters. When he leaves Netherfield Park after hosting a ball, Miss Bingley sends Jane Bennet a letter, which Mrs. Bennet insists is read aloud at breakfast. Upon hearing that his fairest cousin has been abandoned, Mr. Collins offers a proposal of marriage. Mr. Bingley’s return six months later has him discovering a very different Longbourn than the one he saw before. What will he do now that he’s realized he yields too readily to others?”

Whew! This was a tough read. It was also a story where Bingley grew a backbone and took control of his life. He would no longer be influenced by his sisters and friend. I liked this Bingley. It was a somber story but still, gold and silver are refined by fire.

[9] And Then the Murders Began: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 73%

“Netherfield has a reputation for being a haunted manor house. The rumors stem from two centuries of unnatural deaths and horror for each tenant who has resided there. When Elizabeth is invited to stay to tend to her sister Jane, she discovers a murder most foul. Will she and Darcy be able to solve the murder and break the curse? Or are they doomed to suffer the same fate as all the previous inhabitants?”

Boo Spook… or a little shop of horrors?

[10] If Only They’d Had a Son: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 82%

“What if Lydia had been born a boy? Lyndon Bennet has turned out quite wild, having been spoiled by his parents for being the heir who would save them all. What difference will his cruelty and indifference to his elder sisters make in their lives?”

The poor boy turned out exactly as you would expect. LA! What a joke. OK, he never said that but this mini-Lydia was a mess that nearly ruined his family.

[11] Overhearings More to the Purpose: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 90%

“Mrs. Bennet happens to overhear Wickham and the other officers discussing her youngest two daughters in the crudest of terms. When her demands to Colonel Forster are met with the harsh truth, and her insistence to Mr. Bennet that he challenge the officers to a duel is mocked, how will she react?”

Mrs. Bennet overheard what the officers actually thought about her youngest daughters. That conversation sent Mrs. Bennet into a fury. A graphic nightmare sent her into a tailspin. A parlor full of officers was the nail in the coffin. Lydia and Kitty were no longer out. Mrs. Bennet cleaned house and took charge of her youngest daughters. Life at Longbourn took a dramatic turn.

[12] For I Am a Married Woman: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 99%

“William Collins discovered as a youth that some polish and grooming; he could charm ladies as easily as the handsomest gentleman could. When he arrives at Longbourn to choose a wife from his cousins, Lydia is taken in by his compliments and declares that she should be the one to be put forth as Mrs. Collins. Meanwhile, Mr. Collins finds a friend in George Wickham. How will the friendship between these two rakes change the story?”

Lydia and Collins… eeww! Just saying. Slightly disgusting.

Quite enjoyable. One is a farce. One is a fantasy. One is a murder mystery in a haunted house. All but one center on Elizabeth and Darcy. There was a short synopsis beginning each story, making it easy to pick and choose if you want to, and all had a nice epilogue. No trigger warnings except for the murder mystery, and a brief non-graphic description of a conceited character who gets drubbed. All are chaste.

A very enjoyable what if collection, few in which Elizabeth and Darcy were not central to the story, but they always end up together which is exactly my sort of story.

-An Attempted Compromise
I found this very entertaining although I was sorry for the accidental death.

-No Less Brittle Than Beautiful
So lovely. I love Mary triumphs. And I love how she was able to turn things around in this. Not just for herself.

-Keep Your Breath to Swell Your Song
I admit, I wanted a little more on this one. It was cute and sweet.

-But Then the Dragons Came
Oh how I wanted this to become a full length story. I love the addition of dragons and I loved the visible/tangible connection between ODC.

-Nothing But Officers in Her Head
LOVED THIS! Kitty Bennet - le Chaton. I love it when Kitty isn’t the empty headed Kitty from cannon.

-In His Nightcap and Powdering Gown
Bwahahaha! Loved it.

-Punish Him for Such a Speech
I enjoyed Lizzy’s out of character punishment.

-To Yield Readily
I had a love/hate relationship with this story. I loved the eventual maturation of Bingley, but I hated that Jane ended up married to the buffoon parson.

-And Then the Murders Began
Well, I did not not see that coming. A bit sad - but also if someone had to get murdered I am glad it was them.

-If Only They’d Had a Son
This too, would make an excellent full length novel.

-Overhearings more to the purpose
I loved this. Mrs. Bennet was wonderful.

-For I am a married woman
I appreciated this different imagining of Mr. Collins. It was an enjoyable read.

I enjoyed most of the stories

But all of the epilogues. They are all well written and very entertaining for when you cannot read a long story. Some are imaginative and interesting.

Very talented writer

You would think that with 12 short stories there would be at least 1 that would not be to your taste. But, with this author, there were no boring stories or any that you would want to skip. They were all very interesting and different. I have read her other books, and would definitely read the next she would put out.
Keep up the good work Mrs. Thomas.

Jane Austen, you are not forgotten

This is a delightful mix of plots featuring the Pride and Prejudice characters. You've heard that the names were changed to protect the innocent, but in this instance the names are about the only things that weren't changed.

Jane Austen would be astounded to learn that her words continue to inspire writers (and readers) two hundred years after they were written.

This is a wonderful collection of stories. Some touch on tropes common to JAFF, but with very unexpected twists. One of them had me laughing out loud many times. I would have liked a few to be longer, but that is a small quibble. I've read them all more than once over the past few months.

I highly recommend this to readers of Jane Austen fan fiction.

I did not know what to expect from this collection of stories. I feared I was going to hate it since I saw there were dragons in one of the stories and I'm not much of a fantasy reader but I decided to give it a shot. I actually loved it. I loved that there was a short ditty at the beginning of each story to state what the "what if" of the variation would be. There were a few stories that I did not love but overall, I enjoyed the book very much.

An Attempted Compromise:
Wow did this story have awful unintended results but the only people that didn't end up in their HEA were Caroline, Wickham and the Hursts. Still painful for Elizabeth though.

No Less Brittle Than Beautiful:
This story is faith friendly. Mary and Wickham seem like the worst possible couple to be put together but the results were charming. Is is even possible for Wickham to feel true remorse and repent? It doesn't seem likely in general but I loved the way Mary's natural tendency toward choosing good showed him his failings and in turn, did help him to because a better man. And I loved seeing Mary portrayed as genuine rather than self-righteous.

Keep You Breath to Swell Your Song:
This was a cute story. I'd love to be able to hear the singing that so enchanted the Prince Regent and so many others. But there are some women who need to learn to hide their facial expressions better if they want to keep their secrets.

But Then the Dragons Came:
Okay, now we are to the dragon story which in general is not my cup of tea but I started the whole thing already laughing because I was letting my Kindle read this book to me while I weeded. If you've ever used this, you know that the poor computerized voice can't differentiate context and makes mistakes because of it. I've gotten used to Miss So&so being called Mississippi So&so now and it doesn't even phase me. Anyway, another thing the Kindle voice can't do is know to pause between ending one story and starting the next so what I heard was this:
"Thus, Darcy and Elizabeth were able to live happily ever after. But then the Dragons Came."
I looked up. "Wait. What?" I looked over to my Kindle and realized what had happened and burst out laughing. So I was entertained from the first with this little story. It isn't one that I'd want in a full length novel but for the length of this story I could handle it and enjoy it as well. This one does contain a wedding night but it isn't graphic.

Nothing But Officers in her Head:
I love when one of the sisters is written to be much more than she appears and this story is Kitty's. She is super smart and has to keep it all hidden from everyone but her father. I liked how the story played out.

In His Night Cap and Powdering Gown:
Mr. Bennet is quite the man in this story. I actually wanted to see more of him than we got to. The story focus was more on how the family responded to his altered personality. I kept wondering if the changes the family made would permanently change the family dynamics or if things would flit back to normal in time.

Punish Him for Such a Speech:
This one has Christian themes. I think the story is more about friendship than romance, at least until the epilogue. I didn't love the ending between Mary and Elizabeth.

To Yield Readily:
I didn't love this one. The confession of love was too weird in its timing. I wondered what Darcy was thinking. As the story went along I wondered how there could possibly be happily-ever-afters for everyone. I didn't love the pairings but in the end it seemed like a happy future might be hoped for.

And Then the Murders Began:
This was another one that made me laugh at the beginning just like But Then the Dragons Came. This time the Kindle reader said:
"Indeed, Jane would always be grateful that Mr. Bingley was willing to yield so readily to his friend and sisters all those years ago and then the murders began." And once again, I laughed.
But I didn't keep laughing. I thought this story was on the creepy side and didn't like it at all. A curse and a murder. It was pretty awful circumstances especially after learning the who and why.

If Only They'd Had a Son:
Ugh. It seems that I preferred the earlier stories in the book to some in the latter half. Yes, they had a son but he is useless. I hated both the brother and the parents. Hope they all learned a life long lesson from the circumstances. They were pretty awful. Mrs. B was not surprising. I could easily see her behaving like this with a son. But Mr. B was so much worse than usual. So much so that even Elizabeth didn't really like him.

Overhearings More to the Purpose:
I love a variation that causes Mrs. B to improve and change the way she parents the girls. This one has great results.

For I am a Married Woman:
Another story with creepy circumstances. Collins and Wickham are horrible people. The only good thing in this story is that the entail was finally broken and Lydia calmed and became a better person and good example to Kitty.

the short blurbs preceding each shot story contain major spoilers! / many typos and other errors / each chapter 5 (last numbered chapter) ends with ‚The End’ even though an epilogue follows every time / honorific often missing when thoughts of a character are described - would've been ok for close friends but not other characters

Possible trigger elements: death by careless behavior, mental issues, kidnapping, mention of rape, sexually explicit behavior, gambling and alcoholism)

#1 An Attempted Compromise 3* 8/17/25 (39) Netherfield, Meryton, Longbourn, (Pemberley, London); Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, Caroline Bingley, George Wickham

#5 Nothing But Officers in Her Head 4.5* 8/18/25 (32) Longbourn, London, Netherfield, Meryton, (Matlock; (France)); Catherine ‘Kitty’ ‘Le Chaton’ Bennet, Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam
loved this idea

#6 In His Nightcap and Powdering Gown 3.5* 8/19/25 (34) Longbourn, Meryton, Netherfield, (Hunsford, Derbyshire); Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy
very creative and unusual plot idea though OTT unrealistic regarding second half and ending, missing the usual wit and tension between the two MCs

#7 Punish Him for Such a Speech 2.5* 8/19/25 (34) Netherfield, Meryton, Longbourn, (Hunsford, London); Elizabeth Bennet, (Fitzwilliam) Darcy

Page 14 - An Attempted Compromise: Caroline & Wickham plan a compromise for Darcy, but the plan soon evolves into one which includes all who sit in the parlor with them. Will others find their lives also changed? Page 49 - No Less Brittle Than Beautiful: Difficult to imagine such truly opposite people marrying. But as Lydia pushes Mary into Wickham and she ends up with a torn bodice and his hand where it should not be, they are forced to marry. This short vignette is heavy on religion, as George questions his wife about why she reads the Bible and other religious books and prays. Page 88 – Keep Your Breath to Swell Your Song: In this story the Bennet sisters are famous but anonymous singers, wearing bonnets and masks the few times they perform in public. Darcy, having heard them perform in London finds something familiar about Elizabeth when he accompanies Bingley to Netherfield. However, after knowing her a short while and proposing…well we know what happened then. Page 121 - And Then the Dragons Came: It seems that only the bonding of two special people will bring control of dragons which suddenly appear in England. Will love grow? Page 159: Nothing But Officers in Her head: Kitty is secretly the best cryptographer England has in its forces. Then the Colonel is assigned to work with her to catch a spy (either W. or Colonel Forster). Colonel Fitzwilliam doesn’t know her other role. Page 196 - In His Nightcap and Powdering Gown – As ludicrous as it sounds this tale has Mr. Bennet suddenly displaying all of his wife’s traits after a fall and so his wife and daughters must learn to manage Longbourn. Will this last?
Page 234 - Punish Him for Such a Speech: The author’s little blurb gives us the premise here. Elizabeth decides to act like Lydia towards Darcy after suffering Miss Bingley’s sly innuendos and putdowns and having suffered Darcy’s insult at the assembly. Apologies from both follow.
Page 272 - To Yield Easily: Jane marries Collins after receiving that letter from Caroline. Bingley returns to Netherfield not realizing such as he drops a letter from Darcy and the ink is smeared. Both Jane and Bingley come to realize over the years that Bingley’s inability to make his own decisions proved that it was best she didn’t marry him. (Other events I will not spoil for you.)
Page 313 - And Then the Murders Began: Netherfield has a curse attached in that people occupying it suddenly are found dead. So, while E. stays at that estate to nurse Jane & she comes upon a dead body, the curse is again blamed. At the same time, she has also found an old diary…will it provide answers?
Page 351 - If Only They'd Had a Son: Lyndon, (twin to Kitty) is spoiled rotten as the longed for heir to Longbourn. Even when sent away to Eton he finds a way to put himself in peril much to the distress of his family. The man who rescued him and thus saved his life finds a reward, which probably would never have occurred without that act.
Page 389 - Overhearings More to the Purpose: Mrs. Bennet eavesdrops on a conversation between several militia men who agree about the traits of Lydia and Kitty: comparing one to a tavern wench and W. proclaiming he “could have her by the end of the week”. Her shock increases when the men visit Longbourn and she observes her daughters carefully. Changes are about to come to Longbourn.
Page 430 to 476 - For I Am a Married Woman: Collins comes to visit. And from the story: “Mr. Collins was a tall young man with a large form. He could also be considered handsome in the same way that Charlotte Lucas was. He was mannerly and well groomed,…” Oddly, Lydia, seeing that he is looking for a wife decides she can be the first of her sisters to marry and so she does. And even more strange is the fact that E. notices Collins and Wickham seem to have something in mind as their some of their conversation seems to have some double meanings.

I loved it!

Note: There is no trigger warning, but if you don't like a certain story, just skip it and move onto the next.

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is a Pride and Prejudice variation. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a collection of the 12 short stories that are part of the Pride, Prejudice, & Permutations Novelette series. Twelve, what-if short stories inspired by the original Pride & Prejudice, with more than merely tolerable tales that give a glimpse into several of our beloved Pride and Prejudice characters. These regency romance Jane Austen variations are unique and varied: some are silly, some are serious, and there is some magic and mystery thrown in.

An Attempted Compromise
What if Caroline Bingley and Wickham teamed up to drug Darcy and force him into a compromise?

Overhearings More to the Purpose

So with all that and more this book pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone. I strongly believe each of these stories could be turned into much longer books.

Pride and Prejudice variations
1. An attempted Compromise- Caroline Bingley and Wickham attempt to compromise Darcy, what could go wrong.
2. No Less Brittle than Beautiful- A drunken Lydia compromises Mary and Wickham - could such different characters be happy.
3. Keep your Breath to Swell Your Song - the Bonnet Family Singers have given their only public performance. Two months later Netherfield Park is let.
4. But then the Dragons came - Darcy and Elizabeth must wed to save the land from dragons.
5. Nothing but Officers in her Head - what secret does Catherine and her father keep from the rest of the family
6. In his Nightcap and Powdering Gown - an accident changes Bennet’s behaviour, how will the Bennet ladies cope.
7. Punish him for such a Speech - why does Elizabeth flirt with Darcy at Netherfield. Story totally spoilt my Mary's pairing. Shame.
8. To Yield Readily - Caroline Bingley letter to Jane, and heard by all including Collins changes their futures.
9. And the the Murders Began - deaths at Netherfield start over again
10. If Only they had a Son - wild Lyndon Bennet is the heir, are his sisters thankful.
11. Overhearing More to the Purpose - what does Mrs Bennet do when she hears the true opinions of the officers about her daughters. started out really liking this story until Collins appeared. No no and no again to that pairing.
12. For I am a Married Woman - is Collins really a rake.
Because of Mary's pairing twice, only 3 stars, but overall entertaining stories.

Several worthy stories to consider for full-length novels

This collection of Pride and Prejudice short variations is a worthwhile read, not only for the novelty of many of the stories, but also for the brevity of them, which is a plus for readers who are pressed for time.

There are stories though which are so far-fetched. Mary Bennet ending up with Wickham, Caroline Bingley likewise ending up with Wickham, Kitty Bennet with Mr. Bingley, Jane Bennet ending up with Mr. William Collins, and Lydia ending up with Mr. Collins! Hilarious! But then again, this hilarity is what makes these stories fun and worth the read. A turn off though is how short the stories are which greatly compromises the characterization and the romance meant. Most of the time, Elizabeth’s and Mr. Darcy’s progression to affection and love, as well as the endings, is so rushed and haphazardly done.

Nevertheless, the fun and humor that can be had from reading this compilation somewhat compensates whatever disappointments this reader had. It’s just a load of fun, and I commend the author for coming up with so many laughable variations.

I really enjoyed this book of short stories and would recommend it though there are some things worth noting:
* the stories rely heavily on knowledge of the plot and main characters of 'Pride and Prejudice'. So, if you haven't read (or at least seen an adaptation of) this, then I recommend you do so before reading this book.
* the first story is a farce and thus very silly. This is intentional, as the author plays around with different styles and genres in the book. So don't be put off by it - the other stories aren't so silly.
* the book is clean but two of the stories ('Overhearing more to the Purpose' and 'For I am a married woman') contain some (fairly mild) innuendo and sexual references, though these are portrayed in a negative light
* The stories can be a little repetitive as they circle around 'Pride and Prejudice' so closely, so I'd recommend spreading out reading them rather than reading them all in one go.

One of the things I enjoyed was the collection and variation of the stories. I was able in one sitting read one of the stories and feel completed for the day & then come back the next day for another one and in this format the number of pages flew by faster than if it had been one story. With the variety of types of stories I can in the future decide what I feel like to re-read (depending on my mood) and what can be skipped for that time. A few of the stories I would love to see if one of these years the author might expand on them (especially "And Then the Dragons Came").

so Very Captivating!

I just could not stop reading! I read all the variations but one (which I was not interested in after reading the summary… perhaps I’ll go back later) Any way, Totally worth it. Some scenarios are so “out there” and cray cray crazy, but still I was enthralled by each of them. Each variation is given 5 chapters plus an Epilogue which was a good rhythm as some stories did not need so much time spent to get the heart. I’m addicted. I crave more. Please give me more! 😆

Some good amongst the chaff

The collection of mini stories were variations upon weird lines such as what if they were dragons in Netherfield, what if Lydia had been a boy and what if Kitty was actually a spy. None of them were especially brilliant but a few were interesting enough to make the whole worthwhile.
Mrs Bennett overhearing Wickham slander Lydia and taking the initiative to take control was one of my favourites. Each had a small epilogue which most really didn't need.
It was more a collection of fanfiction drabbles or prompts than novellas.

Permutations of Pride and Prejudice

What can be better than eight short What if variations of Pride and Prejudice?! Each one has its own twist. My favorite is about Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet swapping personalities. I hoped an author would take up this challenge. Thank you, Tiffany. Awesome job!

I enjoyed all of these permutations. I look forward to reading more of her works. I encourage you to read these pieces of writing.

Interesting

A collection of very short vignettes on a wide variety of subjects. Although very well written, the stories seem hastily thrown together, and they all end rather abruptly. It almost seemed like reading a conversation between two people who are just quickly throwing out random ideas for variations based on P&P, and none of the ideas is given a chance to be fully developed. A couple of the short tales are quite charming, but overall the whole thing left me flat.

Very good, and some unique, stories

I enjoyed these short stories very much. There were a couple that I would not read again, however this is a matter of taste. There was one that really stood out for me involving Mr. Collins marriage. I've certainly not ever read that storyline before!! Actually there are a few very unique stories in this volume.
I rarely give 5 stars however for so many great stories together this book was worthy of even more.

Short and sweet

This collection of short stories is perfect with a cup of tea.

One story was more of a narrative and did not engage.

There were also some jarring errors which a decent editor should have caught.

Ms Thomas produced innovative and entertaining short stories, that with work could readily translate into interesting books.

I look forward to her future endeavors.

This collection of stories explores some what-ifs involving some of the most interesting Pride and Prejudice characters. Despite many of them hinging on the same pivotal moments, the author keeps the events fresh and entertaining. Definitely a good choice for readers who couldn’t help wondering “what-if…?” after reading Jane Austen’s original work.

Meh

This book is filled with way too many short stories of which I only found about three to be interesting. I even skipped several of them because the variation was too ridiculous. They all began with a brief synopsis of the plot and all ended with epilogues. Most focused on other characters with Elizabeth and Darcy getting married as an aside to the main plot.

A truly varied collection.

Short story writing is hard. Plots must be developed, characters drawn and context portrayed within a limited number of words. Thomas does this well. Her stories do not repeat themselves, characters differ from story to story, and they are all very readable.
