The Planet Express crew delivers big-time laughs in this newest anthology of comic adventures. First, Fry, Leela, and Bender find themselves in over their heads when they join an intergalactic competitive swurling team. Then, in a future society where the common cold has long since been cured and forgotten, an infectious 20th century Fry becomes the most influenzal man in New New York City. Throw in a trip to the circus where the crew is abducted and displayed as sideshow freaks, a deal with the Robot Devil that makes Bender ruler of Robot Hell, a mind-bending tale by Professor Farnsworth that can be read seven different ways, and the beginning and, quite possibly, untimely ending of Fry's life in film when he takes on the iconic role of Space Boy, and you have an all-new Futurama collection made expressly for you!
This one earned a fifth star on the basis of the last story, The Bender You Say, where Bender takes the place of Robot Satan, AND for this little exchange where Leela and Bender visit the ship's library:
Bender: "Wow! I didn't know we had this room. You know, for a small fee, I could fit all this info on a silicon chip the size of a fingernail."
I love Futurama! Some of the jokes seem just too funny for cartoons. This volume of the comic series did a good job of catching the spirit of the TV show. Not quite as funny, but there are still some jokes that sneak up on you and make you laugh out loud from time to time. Bender is the man! Er, the robot...man? Anyway, if you are a fan of Futurama, then pick up the comics because if you like the show, you'll probably like the comics.
this is one of the few comic books I've read- it didn't have the beautiful characters and colors or even a particularly good story line- but- as a lover of all things Futurama, it was still pretty enjoyable. Love the references to conventional (And ancient) storytelling. It was more MAD magazine than comic, really, but I loved it all the same.
Evokes the absurdity, characterization, and rhythm of the TV show pretty well, but, without the voice acting, doesn't live up to its brilliance. A nostalgic trip back to a time when I didn't know every episode. Wouldn't recommend the comics unless you already know, love, and have seen all of the show.
Literature Requirement graphic novel, manga, or anime
Eric Rogers put forth multiple chapters that take place in the Futurama Universe. All your favorite characters are here, fry the lovable idiot sort of like Andy Dyer and Stewie Griffin combined, bender the alcoholic no-nonsense robot, and Leela the spunky purple haired who also happens to be a cyclops. Professor Farnsworth due in part to time travel being possible is not the oldest person here even though he looks like his. Dr. Zoidberg a crustacean who despite being referred to as a doctor has no true concept of anatomy. Amy Wong a rich young girl and heiress of Mars who is quite bright. Hermes Conrad a Jamaican bureaucrat who likes to follow the rules. These are just some of the lovable quirky characters in this graphic novel. With the exception of Professor Farnsworth the characters as a member of Planet Express travel to go deliveries or at least that what their supposed to do they often get sidetracked and wind up ending in hi-jinks. This graphic novel takes you through adventures with your favorite characters with colorful pictures, funny anecdotes and sometimes complete and utter destruction. Leela, Fry and Bender join an intergalactic competitive swurling team. It's like curling only it involves other-worldly creatures that is just one of the many adventures contained in this novel. Though not as fun as the TV series this will do in a pinch.
I don't know why, but this book didn't do it for me. The pacing in comic format seems to be off. The jokes were a little off or groaners, right from the first one where the Timmy robot sinks through the ice. It's almost as if everything is still wacky, but just in slower motion.
