The Shop on Royal Street by Karen White is a 2022 Berkley publication.
Seven years have passed since Nola first set off for New Orleans. Times have been hard, but she’s gotten herself together and is ready to buy her first house. Naturally, she chooses one in dire need of either a complete gutting or a bulldozer. Melanie is highly skeptical- not just because of the massive work that needs doing, but because of the spirits she senses in the house. Nola meets even more resistance from Beau, but eventually Nola gets her wish...
But not before she learns the house is a ‘Murder’ house. As it becomes clear that the unsolved mystery is connected to the house’s restless spirits, and could have a connection to Beau, Nola sets out to solve the cold case mystery…
I’ve been super excited about this series. I wasn’t expecting so much time to have elapsed between the ‘Tradd Street’ mystery and this new one, nor was I expecting Nola to fall prey to her family’s predisposition to addiction.
What did not surprise me, though, was Nola's complicated relationship, with Beau- and I'm looking forward to seeing how this relationship develops.
I also loved Jolene, Nola’s friend and roommate, and quirky southern sayings, and of course, I LOVED the setting!! New Orleans is the perfect location for Nola and her paranormal adventures. The mystery is very curious and some of the loose ends will carry over to the next installment.
While we experienced some chills and thrills, in the Tradd Street series, this spinoff has come real spine tingling moments that gave me the shivers!
Overall, as you can tell, I was able to easily drop into this spinoff series and enjoyed touching base with some of my favorite ABBA loving characters, but also loved how easily the torch was passed to Nola- which was seamless and natural.
I think the new series is off to a great start and I can’t wait to read the next installment!!

I admit it. I was sad when the Tradd Street series by Karen White ended. There’s really no other series like it, the perfect mix of mystery, charming southern atmosphere, with a touch of paranormal (just a sprinkle!), and I looked forward to each installment. Enter Karen White’s shiny new spin-off series, Royal Street, and we have the first installment, The Shop on Royal Street, featuring Nola Trenholm in atmospheric New Orleans.
Years ago I went to New Orleans for the first time, and my very favorite building is on Royal Street and its likeness is on this stunning cover. So super excited about this series and the journey ahead for dear Nola.
In this story, she’s starting over with her first house; a fixer-upper, of course. And, likewise, of course there are previous “tenants” who don’t want to leave. Beau Ryan comes along to help Nola fix up her house, but it’s not quite straightforward. On top of that, a woman was murdered in Nola’s new home, and the mystery was never solved. Talk about a possibly haunted house.
So good. So atmospheric. Love the characters. Love love love the new setting. So grateful to have a new series from Karen White to look forward to!

Man I really wanted to like this.
It started off pretty promising. The characters were alright, the ghosts were moderately spooky, and the mystery was interesting, but then the twist was just so dumb it made the first 80% of the book a waste.
Other reviews go into the details of the issues with this book so I won't rehash them here, but I will say that if you know a mafia-ish guy is mad at your family and seeking revenge don't leave your toddlers unsupervised.
Disappointed is an understatement.

I love the Tradd Street series, so was really excited about this spinoff. While I really enjoyed reading it, now that I am finished I am more confused and frustrated than anything else. There are so many loose ends that were left unresolved, and it seems like the Jeanne/Charles storyline was concluded. Here are my issues:
1) Jeanne was supposedly Mimi's best friend. She was set to move in with her, and she stated that Jeanne introduced her to Charles. Yet, Jeanne keeps turning up the heat and coming onto her best friend's fiancé?
2) Speaking of Charles, how old is he anyway? We have some contradictory information. When Nola and Jolene are looking through Jeanne's client book and start speculating on the relationship between Jeanne and Charles, Nola mentions that he was "a young man" at that time. But he was a doctor by then, and Mimi states that although Jeanne was engaged to someone else, she didn't really love him that way because she "liked older men". So which is it?
3) A major omission was the explanation for why Charles was buying pajamas and/or gloves every week for months. At first, Nola and Jolene think it was an excuse to see Jeanne, but as we find out, that is not the case, as he is not interested in Jeanne that way. So what the heck is up with the repetitious weekly purchases?
4) How did Jeanne's client book end up in the closet with the other items? How would the family have had access to it in the first place? Supposedly, Mimi's son Buddy took the door and other items to hide in the house to get keep them away from Mimi, who wanted nothing to do with them, and that was in 1997. But Sunny wasn't even born yet then, so how did her hair ribbon and the photo negative end up with the book in the hat box?
Another thing, and I didn't recognize it while I was reading the book, but upon reflecting on it afterward, it's so obvious that this book follows basically the same formula as the Tradd Street series. Main female character with an attitude and chip on her shoulder, side-kick best friend, guy with whom she has an antagonistic relationship but secretly has the hots for, and a "distraction" guy. Nola=Melanie, Jolene= Sophie (and maybe a little bit of Rebecca), Beau=Jack, and Michael=Marc Longo. I get that some conflict is necessary, I just wish it was not so close to the series from which it spun off.
All of that said, I did enjoy reading the book. I just wish I had some answers to the above questions. Karen White remains one of my favorite authors and I am eager to read the next in the series. I just can't give it more than 3 stars due to the all the plot holes.

I could not stand the main character Nola. She was insufferable and I had a really strong reaction to her. There is no way I can continue with the series. The story was not interesting either to make up for what an annoying MC she was. It took me weeks to finish listening to it. I am disappointed because I read and loved other books by Karen White.

I wanted to love this book. I adore Karen White books including The Tradd Street series. I didn't enjoy the direction that Nola has been taken (AA). I hated the extremely pukey southern colloqualisms. Didn't find romance in the New Orleans setting rather it felt dank. Mostly disappointed. 2 stars is gracious.

Where main character/psychic medium Melanie Trenholm’s Tradd Street series left off, her step-daughter Nola Trenholm’s life continues in Karen White’s brand new series. It was fun, surprising, has a great mystery, is a little dark with the ghosts and all.. it checked a lot of boxes for me. So good! Would definitely recommend.

Nola Trenholm has had a difficult last few years due to some self destructive behavior. This is the first in a new series spinoff of the Tradd Street series. I loved the Tradd Street books and was really sorry to see that series end. Melanie and Jack are still around peripherally but this time the focus is on daughter Nola. The location change to New Orleans is great. I’ve never been but definitely want to visit there. The spooky atmosphere is great and the ghosts come out when Nola buys a “murder house” from the grandmother of Beau, a former acquaintance and reluctant psychic. There is a lot going on with the haunting, a murder mystery, a bit of romance, and an adorable stray dog. Karen White is a wonderful writer and manages to keep everything interesting. I really couldn’t put this down. The end doesn’t quite resolve all of the mysteries so I’m eagerly looking forward to the next one!

Nola Trenholm is looking for a fresh start in New Orleans. Things are falling in place as she successfully purchases her first home. However, this historical home needs quite some work. Is Nola up to the task? Also the house has some previous residents still “inhabiting” the home. Nola is not capable to communicate with them and needs some help fast. Will she be able to manage all of this?

If you enjoyed Karen White’s previous books, you likely won’t be disappointed here. I loved the setting in New Orleans and the creepy old house, this stuff is right up my alley. This was such a fun pivot to my regular books! Paranormal isn’t a genre I dip into often and the trademark Karen white writing style had me hooked. I didn’t audio and felt the narrator was a bit monotone but I stuck with it and ended up really enjoying the story.
Book 2 comes out in May and I can’t wait!

Nola is still the same obnoxious person that she was in all the previous Tradd Street series books. Hasn't changed even though she is ten years older. Still spoiled. Much prefer her southern room mate. Don't think I will read any additional books in this particular series.

It's obvious that there is a story before this one, but I still enjoyed the New Orleans set mystery. A touch of paranormal without the main character having that talent. Relationships are a little odd in this book, but maybe that's so there's an arc.

I was so sad when I found out that Karen White’s Tradd series was coming to an end, but thankfully she then announced a new spinoff, The Royal Street series…Huge sigh of relief. I was a little nervous picking up The Shop on Royal Street, since we were leaving some characters behind, but as soon as I started reading, I was already in love with the new cast and excited for Nola’s new start in life!
Now, I’m going to do my best not to gush like an over eager teenager as I write this review, but OMG this first book is amazing!
✨What appealed to you the most in this story?
Just getting to dive into a brand-new series with a cast of new (one return) characters was the best! I’ve already fallen in love with Nola’s close friends and the humor and levity they bring to the story. Seriously, Jolene is the absolute best friend any girl could ask for, and her one-liners are perfect for some laugh out loud moments. Now, add in some more characters that you will love, and you have the makings for an excellent support system to help Nola tackle the renovations on her new home and the mysteries that surround it.
✨How was the setting?
Karen White is the master of pulling you into a story and making you feel like you are standing right there with the characters with lush and detailed atmosphere. I loved getting to explore the streets (potholes), restaurants, customs and Parishes in New Orleans through Nola’s eyes.
✨Do I need to have read The Tradd Street series in order to understand this new spinoff series?
No! You can start with this book and begin a whole new adventure and life with Nola and not feel like you have missed a thing. Now I do have to say that the Tradd Street series is one of my favorites and I’ve reread it several times, so if you haven’t read it yet I HIGHLY recommend you dive into it now!

This story held a steady pace as it introduced new characters, settings, and background for the series to build from.
✨Do you recommend this book?
Heck yes, I do!! This book is both funny, sad, and suspenseful at times; the multiple mysteries are all interesting and suspenseful; and the ghosts run the gamut from being heartwarming to exceedingly creepy and dangerous. It is truly a great book to begin a series with, and I’m so excited to see where this series and Nola’s life will go from here!

It was a fast read but completely forgettable. Oh, and White ends the book on a cliffhanger, which I absolutely hate.

In the book, a young woman who is an expert on home restoration buys a derelict Creole collage to repair--over the seller's strenuous objections. You see, decades ago, there was a murder there. What are the odds the house is haunted?? Throw in a cliched romance and a deeply annoying cliff-hanger of an ending, and there you have it.
So, what did I like? The house she was restoring was 2 or 3 blocks from my house in NOLA. And while there are no derelict houses in the neighborhood, in all other ways she got it right, with mentions of all our neighborhood places, and just getting a lot of the NOLA details right. And while this story's a dog, it's always nice to visit NOLA, even in the pages of a book.

Underwhelming is the word that comes to mind. After the wonderful Tradd Street series, this was pretty disappointing and, uh, boring. I finally stopped at 80%, couldn't even stick it out the last 20%. Just didn't care what the final outcome was. I found it slow moving. Too much description bogged it down a lot. I just didn't care about the people, nothing really was happening, too much time on uninteresting things. Maybe I'll try the next one, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Так як, це спін-оф іншої серії, то трішки інформації не вистачає і приходиться дертися наосліп. Тому деяка частина книги не зрозуміла і залишаються питання.
Але менш з тим, мені було цікаво чим все закінчиться і чи зміниться головна героїня. Адже вона приїхала в місто, щоб почати нове життя і вирости як особистість. Спойлер: не вийшло. Давно мене так не бісила головна героїня. Я сподіваюсь в інших частинах вона навчиться приймати допомогу і відпустить помилки минулого.
Ще тут є романтична лінія, яка абсолютна ніяка. Вона його не ненавидить, бо він врятував їй життя і тепер вона йому зобов'язана. Але також біситься, коли бачить його поруч з дівчиною. Він же має до неї почуття, цілує, хоча зустрічається з іншою. Вибачте, але це виглядає, як непорозуміння між підлітками, таке кохання не для мене.
Для мене було забагато описів і місцями просто нудно. Хотілось скоріше добратись до розв'язки і пропустити більшу половину книги. Хоча авторка поєднала багато інших сюжетних ліній і мені хочеться дізнатися, що ж там буде далі, продовжувати читати серію я не буду.
Атмосфера цієї книги чудово підійшла для читання восени. І мені тепер хочеться відвідати Новий Орлеан.

#1) is a winner in all aspects! Nola Trenholm has found her 1st home which she is viewing with her step-mom, Melanie Trenholm, a realtor from Charleston, NC. The author’s words describing Melanie as she sees Nola’s choice for her first home are priceless. “ Her face wore the expression of someone who’d just witnessed a train wreck.” The author has such a gift with words. All flowed beautifully in this first book of her spin-off series. Nola, now 26, has had a rough time after she started college, but now she is straight and looking for a ‘historic fixer-upper’ in MAR-I-née, Newawlins (phonetically presented). If her new home does come ready-made with spirit/s, Nola knows someone in New Orleans who can help her - Beau Ryan, but Nola does not really like Beau and certainly does not want his help. Famous last words. Nola’s former roommate at Tulane, Jolene, works for JR Properties which is owned by Beau Ryan’s family. Notice how the author begins to weave her magic! Nola’s Creole cottage - spirits and all - has a history. And, of course, there must be a old phone whose cord is not plugged into an outlet, that rings, and when answered, there is “a tinny, hollow noise that could have been a voice……”. It was! Highly recommended!! 5 stars.

Karen White is launching a new series and injecting some new life into her Tradd Street characters, who have been with us for 7 books now...
It is now Nola Trenholm at the center of the books, her stepmother Melanie is mostly out of the picture in this novel, and doesn’t really show any signs of coming back front and center anytime soon...and to be honest, I kind of liked that? It’s fresh, and Nola is so different from Melanie that it really gives a new vibe to the feel of the books, coupled with the fact that the setting of the novels changes in this new series from Charleston, SC to New Orleans, LA.
I think Karen White’s legions of loyal fans are going to follow her (and Nola) right to New Orleans happily and embrace The Shop On Royal Street; it was a fun read, and sets up naturally for a book 2 in 2023!

The Tradd Street series is one of my favorites so I was very excited to know that the story was continuing with Nola in New Orleans. All the elements of a great story were there, just like the Tradd Street series, but it felt like it was exactly like the Tradd Street series. Yes, obviously Melanie and Jack are going to be in the books because of their connection to Nola but the story was so similar, too. There's the love interest that she can't be with, the love interest that is there to take his place, the restoration of houses with Sophie in the background telling you exactly how to do it. Nola is somewhat bratty so that hasn't changed despite growing up. The ghosts are always the most fascinating part of the story and even this felt a little too similar. Still, I enjoyed the story and hope that the series grows into its own.

The writing is so fun to read, I love the wonderful characters, the immersive storyline with a mystery element, that has a dash of romance and the supernatural. I am so excited for this new series - a spin off! I am definitely going back to all of Karen White’s backlists.
Don’t miss this first book in a series, it’s really phenomenal.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Nola in the Tradd series. I don’t think she was redeemed in this spin off.

This first spinoff book didn’t live up to the Tradd Street books for me, probably because I didn’t love Nola (as an adult) and Beau as much as Melanie and Jack. But it’s Karen White, so it was still a good book and there’s no doubt I’ll keep reading. Several new secondary characters that were memorable (Jolene is a hoot!).

Nola just bought an old house in well NOLA, how fitting. It's a historic home in disrepair but with a whole lot of potential. Unfortunately it has a bit of a negative history, and the spirits are quite restless trying to tell their story.
Nola cannot communicate with ghosts but her step mom can. And so can Beau, who can best be described as her frenemy, his true role depends on the day and circumstances.
Jolene, who became fast friends with Nola oozes southern charm with wonderful fun quotes and antidotes from her family in Mississippi. I absolutely adored her character, she is definitely one my most favorite characters EVER. When you think of southern charm, you think of Jolene. I will truly miss her.
This book is full of southern character, mysteries (yes more than one) and of course ghosts plus a little romance. What more could you ask for?

I devoured The House on Tradd Street series by author Karen White, loving the mix of southern charm with a side of supernatural, and was so excited for this brand new spinoff series, featuring Nola Trenholm, ready to begin her new life in New Orleans.
Once again, I loved the writing, the southern setting, the robust characters, and the mysterious storyline that gave me just enough of those ghostly chills to satisfy my craving.

This is a Paranormal Mystery. I like this author. This is the 17th book written by her that I've read. I thoroughly enjoyed her Tradd Street series...and even though I kinda miss the MC of that one, I think I'll settle right into this new series just fine.
This author seamlessly adds a paranormal element to her stories. I like that this element doesn't invade and take over....everything. The author paints the picture in a way that keeps the characters in the limelight.
I like this author, her characters, and her stories, so 4 stars.

Ugh, throwing this book out my window like I'm Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings playbook.
I managed not to DNF because it was such a breezy beach-type read with short chapters and I've been on a reading hot streak, but I will not continue this series. Nola is the most insufferable character I've read in a long time. One-dimensional, dumber than a box of rocks, obnoxious, stubborn to an outrageous fault, immature, no filter or sense of tact! Beau was not much better and Jolene's whole "Southern Belle" thing was a little too outrageous to be believable (literally no one has time to bake every morning, needlepoint a dog bib, monogram everything in the damn house, AND work a full time job). The twist ends up being slightly predictable, and the cliffhanger ending feels very cheap.

A fun, light read, and I will probably read the next one in the series just because I want to know what happens.
However, I do feel like the subtitle of this book should be “how to show you know a lot about New Orleans while also saying you are not from New Orleans.“ I felt like the author tried a little hard to fit as many possible New Orleans icons into the book as possible. it was a little distracting for someone who’s from the area like I am. I mean, Camilla Grill, and Antoine’s are both wonderful, but a native would probably be talking about other places as well. At least she was in the Marigny and not in the French Quarter. And I appreciate that she didn’t have any “typical“ New Orleans characters. That was a relief.

I struggled with the first part of the book because of how slow it was. I enjoyed the second half of the book a lot more. I would recommend The Shop on Royal Street to fans of Southern fiction and mystery readers.
