I got an ARC from the author. This does not impact my review of the book but I'm told there were still some slight changes until the published book.
When I heared about this, I was intrigued. Queer vampires. 😍 And the start was amazing, I kinda liked Grace and the way her story unfolded was awesome. The way vampires are portrayed here, was something I really liked. The writing style made sure I flew through the pages (the flashbacks were a bit much sometimes but still good). At some point I really started disliking Becca and Calliope. And there were times when I was annoyed with Grace to no end. There were some major points in the development of the story which I really didn't like but that is totally personal. What really irked me, was the relationship between Becca and Grace. What Grace let us see, didn't shine a great light on it. Let's just say it wouldn't be a friendship I would feel comfortable in.

I wish I could produce words as delightful as the ones this author wrote in her book to put in a Goodreads review, but I can simply only say that I am quite taken with this story, all the characters in it, and the world Rose Sinister is creating. I also couldn’t agree more with the last sentence written on page 476 (you may just have to read the book to find out what it is).

I was so excited to read this book because I had the privilege of taking a vampire tour with Rose Sinister back in 2017. The way she brought stories to life was incredible. She made my first trip to New Orleans so memorable! I knew that this book would be incredible too and I was not wrong. This is more than just a vampire novel because of the different topics the story covers like romance, friendship, and mystery. I also feel a little biased because I am from Chicago, born and raised so I loved all the references to this beautiful city. Because of the city’s history and age, I too have once imagined vampires roaming the city at night. I was pleasantly surprised because like Grace, I also went to Loyola and I have a Catholic background. I was able to relate to her in a lot of ways because of that. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I wonder if any of the books in the series will take us to the magical city of New Orleans?

This is now one of my all time favourite books. I’d give it 10 stars if I could. I don’t want to say too much and give anything away because this book should be savored. I felt like the writing was so fluid, I was on the journey right along with it, discovering things as they were revealed ~ I was equal parts “am I the main character!?!” and voyeur. I could see it all happen in my minds eye so clearly, like watching a movie. Sinister is a long time vampire tour guide and I confidently believe she has staked her claim to a place in vampire zeitgeist/lore. Beautiful macabre perhaps at times grotesque in the reality of blood & becoming she also cleverly wove in moments of levity where I caught myself smiling & even laughing a bit out loud. I almost feel like this was written FOR me & it will most likely become a bar at which I compare other books too. I cannot wait for book 2 and this world I can get lost (& found) in all over again. A. Must. Read.

What a GORGEOUS debut! I couldn't put this book down. Well-paced, beautiful character development, and a unique take on vampires. An excellent blend of romance, action, a little horror, and compelling storytelling.

I found Rose's podcast years ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed her storytelling abilities for a while. As soon as I saw she was writing a vampire book I needed to have it! That being said, my expectations were not super high for a first time author and I thought it would be mildly entertaining at best. I have never been so delighted to be proven wrong.
This book blew every expectation I had out of the water. The pacing, the humor, the story arch were all perfect. I was nervous when I got about 1/3rd of the way through the book that the ending would be disappointing or a major cliff hanger since I know that she is planning a whole series, but our main story arch is resolved at the end of the book with just enough loose ends to make me desperate for the next installment!!
My only *small* complaint is there were quite a few errors that were not caught in editing that made the story a little hard to follow sometimes (some instances of a characters name that had been changed at some point in the writing process were not changed over, and some details were brought up in conversations that had not been previously discussed that I can only assume are somewhere on the cutting room floor). There were also spelling and grammar mistakes that happen in just about every book. This did not detract from my enjoyment of the book AT ALL and I would still recommend it to everyone.
It was like this book was written for me. I saw a lot of myself in Grace (minus the cleaning to deal with stress, I'm the opposite!) And all of the characters were extremely realistic and human, there are no too-perfect-they-can't-possibly-be-real characters, which is an amazing breath of fresh air, especially for the vampire genre!
Sorry for the ramble but I haven't thoroughly enjoyed a book this much in a very long time and I have no one to talk about it with!

What a fantastic debut from vampire expert and tour guide extraordinaire, Rose Sinister. I was honored to be gifted an ARC from the author. This book wastes no time drawing you into the world of a main character whose life is suddenly upended by her unexpected (and unwilling) transformation into a vampire, a world she quickly discovers is full of mystery, secrets, plots, betrayals, and ancient grudges that cling to life and wreak havoc. The characters are diverse, realistic, and beautifully flawed, with histories that will make you cry. The intrigue is gripping. The romance is tentative, savory, and satisfying. And nothing is exactly what you would expect.

It is also refreshing to read a book about vampires written by someone who knows what she is talking about. Rose is exceedingly knowledgeable on vampire lore, and that is made clear in her depictions of these characters. Supernatural effects of the transformation like how breathing is affected, what happens to their skin/hair/nails, what sensations they feel - are woven seamlessly into the plot, giving the reader a comprehensive glimpse into what it might be like to be a vampire.

If you grew up loving Twilight but acknowledge that maybe you're a little too grown up for that now, if you love accurate neurodivergent portrayals and representation, if you are ready for a book that tackles real shit, this book should be your immediate next read. Also maybe if you love unassuming but handsome and morally gray Scottish men.

Even though this book is about vampires, it felt very deeply human.

We follow Grace, who was unrightfully turned into a vampire. She wakes up after a party in a bathtub in the bathroom of a vampire named Calliope. Newborn vamps are called fledglings, and it is basically unheard of to change someone (especially without their permission) and abandon them, but Grace has been left abandoned on Calliope's (figurative) doorstep.

Calliope unfortunately has no time to babysit a new, bloodthirsty fledgling, so she calls in a favor from Harold, who is a lifelong friend. He agrees to babysit, if not a little reluctantly.

Grace doesn't want the new life she has been handed, but along the way finds love and kinship all while swearing vengeance on the man who changed her without her permission.

This was honestly such a beautiful, cozy read even with the blood and vampires. Harold is a fantastic mmc (I had to Google 1800s hairstyles so I'd stop picturing him as John Quincy Adams lmao) who is so understanding and supportive while Grace tries to figure out her life (or lack thereof). Even when she's making poor choices, he is there to pick up the pieces.

Grace is also maybe the most real protagonist I've ever read, and especially after Throne of Glass is was so refreshing. She doesn't make stupid, childish, annoying choices. She feels like a mid-twenties human person.

This was seriously such a cozy book for me.

This is an exceptionally well-balanced debut novel--This Crimson Debt provides a first look into a series that will bring revitalizing energy to its genre. This Crimson Debt has a little bit of everything, and really centralizes the plot around the interpersonal relationships and internal struggles of believable characters. While you don't have to be a die hard vampire enthusiast to enjoy this work, the author's extensive knowledge of the subject really shines through, and the novel is delightfully self-aware in its delivery of clever and comical references to popular vampire media. The modern setting and authentically relatable characters create an atmosphere that the reader can immediately and comfortably delve into. Additionally, This Crimson Debt offered themes more sophisticated than those of vampire media that I had previously been exposed to, with character dialogue that handled investigations of self-awareness and identity with care and honesty. I'm super excited to read more content in this series, as I can see endless possibilities within the universe that Rose Sinister has introduced in This Crimson Debt.

This Crimson Debt is an engrossing tale of learning to adapt against your will, burgeoning love, mystery, and friendships kept and lost. The characters are relatable and dimensional, and it’s easy to fall into the emotional rollercoaster of confusion, loss, revenge, and affection that Grace finds herself swimming in, as she navigates her new found life beyond her life. She is thrown into an unlikely pairing, much like Snow White, if there had only been one endearing and curmudgeonly dwarf, and his cottage in the woods had been an average Colonial in the suburbs.

Authored by a local tour guide, and vampire aficionado Rose Sinister, This Crimson Debt will set you to missing friends, unraveling the strings of a vampiric whodunnit, and falling in love against your better judgement. Curl up in an old chair, mind any loose springs, and enjoy…….just remember to heat up your to-go containers of blood first.

This book is *fantastic.* I'm not usually a vampire novel reader, but the blurb on this one interested me enough to pick it up, and I quickly fell in love with all these flawed, human, deeply three-dimensional characters. Grace's struggles to reconcile her quiet faith with her new life as an inhuman monster, Becca's bright and cheerful veneer over her hidden pain and desperate desire for love and acceptance... and Airalt is just daddy and I want him to fix my car, poor guy. I love this book, I can't recommend it enough, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next entry in what promises to be a vast, world-spanning, entertaining series. So good, y'all. Read it.

The Crimson Debt by Rose Sinister is the type of book you can't put down. It's the type that makes you want to stay up all night reading, and then go back in during the day to finish it. It's a story that has real-world connections, romance, adventure, horror, and vampires—all in one book. I haven't been much of a reader lately, but this book has made me want to pick up my Kindle and escape reality as much as possible.

Rose Sinister's writing style is like an ideal blend between Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" saga and Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Dark Hunter" series.

The only problem now is I have a terrible thirst for more!

It's pringles. Once you start you devour just one more chapter, until you come to the end and want the next book (already in the works). Not a deep work of literature, just entertaining all the way through. I took turns liking and hating the characters and their relationships from an invested place. I can see more depth to each character so was intrigued and compelled to keep reading about each charmingly flawed vampire. I also enjoyed my own evolving perspective on shared experiences as they are viewed through each uniquely flawed individual. Truly a fun and engaging book to the very last page.

This Crimson Debt is about a young fledgling named Grace who now has to navigate her new life as a vampire. She is not thrilled at first and wants nothing more than to be alive again or dead even though she is already dead. As you continue to read the book we find out more about how Grace became undead and how she now wishes to seek vengeance. Throughout the book Grace has to navigate her new relationships with vampires and her mortal best friend Becca. This book has many plot twists and really dives into the whole new life as a vampire and how it is so not glamorous. Overall this book is great if you love vampires and want a new modern twist on this decade old tale.

This was a really fun read! I liked seeing the selection of “what makes a vampire”; adopting characteristics from other novels, rejecting others, and then creating something new! It’s also a nice change of pace to show the actual brutality of being a vampire. Obviously, they’re fictional (probably?) creatures, so one can only speculate on their “true” nature; but one can assume that it is not always the most pleasant and joyful existence. My only drawback I would say on this is there were a lot of spelling and grammar errors throughout, so I think another editing sweep would’ve done wonders. But other than that, this was thrilling! And I’m glad I was finally able to read it! :3

I am in a book hangover, and it’s the longest one I’ve had to nurse since I can remember! Grace Kelly Cordero is the protagonist that I didn’t know I’d fallen in 🖤 with until my heart beat and hurt for her once hers stopped beating… (no, that’s definitely not a spoiler, as she gets turned into a vampire in the first few pages!)

This is a completely unique take on the vampire myth that is refreshingly unlike True Blood’s bayou setting, even though New Orleans is the place that I first encountered the author as she gave vampire themed tours through the French Quarter.

It will be such a relief to revisit these characters again in the next installment of this new series!

An awesome novel about vampires. Though it does follow some tropes of the genre it stays far away from others to explore new ground. I liked the main character, she is entirely relatable and feels like someone you know. All of the main characters feel real, the pacing is just right and there is some snappy dialog and cackle-inducing descriptions. It is excellent for a novel about vampires and great for a debut! Read it! You won't regret it! Rose tells a helluva story! I can't wait for the sequel!

I've been following the author on social media for a while and was excited to find she wrote a vampire book. I didn't know anything aside from that before I read it. And I'm not sure how I feel about this one... I was shocked that it didn't take place in New Orleans. I was expecting for the story to atmospheric and sensual for some reason and it wasn't. The typos were distracting. Harold's accent was also distracting and unnecessary. The plotline felt cheesy and stagnant, it could've used a lot more worldbuilding. I will read the second book whenever it comes out just out of curiosity.

Great read

This is one of those books i didn't want to finish. I put it down for almost a week, knowing i didn't want it to end. Imagine my relief to find there is, or will be, another.
Rose's writing style is easy to read, and it flowed like a movie playing in my head. The characters are well-developed, especially for a new author. There wasn't an overabundance of detail (which can be boring) and yet I could see every bit of this story in my head as I read. I really liked everything about this.
Gotta go, I need to go find the next book.

GREAT READ

We met the author on a Vampire Tour in New Orleans, and I immediately bought her book. I started reading it on the flight home—and couldn’t put it down!

This isn’t your typical vampire romance (which is exactly what I loved about it). Instead, it’s a coming-of-age story about a girl who’s turned into a vampire and has to navigate everything that comes with it—identity, power, and the price of immortality.

An absolutely captivating read from start to finish. I can’t wait for Book 2! 🖤

Overall a decent read!
I found out about this book because the author was my ghost tour guide.
The tumultuous drivers of our main character Grace often result in an overwhelming cacophony of teen girl emotions, which can be a bit too much at times. The other bits of the story are great and imaginative. I always enjoy a good new bloody vampire lore. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good modern vampire story!

I liked pretty much everything about this. I grew up reading Anne Rice and recently tried to revisit her books and just couldn’t. The nostalgia is strong but not so much the execution. This book however, this book was precisely what I was looking for. I liked the characters, I liked the lore, I liked the story and I liked the relationships. I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for the next book.

What a Fun Ride

TBH I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into but I was in for a treat. The characters were fleshed out and interesting. I liked the fact that the author just assumed you know your vamp lore and didn't have to trot out THAT exposition fairy. My complaints are minor. Sometimes the breaks in narrative were sudden and a bit jarring. Not enough to stop it cold but took a min to get back into it. Do yourself a favor and take a chance.

What a great ride! This Crimson Debt is a great first novel from an author to watch. Fun, funny, witty, and sometimes sad, the novel kept me turning pages, eager to find out the solution to the mysteries it presented and to see how the characters and their relationships would develop. I loved the queer, non-binary, and hints of polyam representation. I can't wait for the sequel!

I had grand plans to read this in one day, but life got in the way. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next. The dynamics among the characters could prove to sizzle.
