The Complete Idiot's Guide(r) to Vegan Eating for Kids shows parents how they can raise a happy, healthy child on a vegan diet. The guide presents all the nutritional needs for children up to 12 years old, outlining what they need at what stage in their lives, and what vegan foods can provide those nutrients.
•The only book to present a complete plan for raising a vegan child
•Includes delicious vegan recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and snacks that especially appeal to children
•Will appeal to the nearly 5 million vegetarians/vegans in the United States
•Includes complete nutritional lists of fruits, vegetables, and nuts
•Features tips for teaching children how to cope in a non-vegan world
A plus for this book is that it covers a lot of ground, not just nutrition, but also the social aspects of raising a vegan child (food at birthday parties; being the odd one out; talking to doctors; fussy eating; bullying etc).
However, everything is a little too simplistic for my liking, and especially the nutritional advice seems a little shallow. I would recommend the excellent Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet as an alternative for those who want a more much detailed approach to nutrition - although this book has only one chapter devoted specifically to child-nutrition.
The book is also very US-centric, so if you live elsewhere it's value will be diminished.
Most info I already knew. Not ground breaking revelations. I was interested in the recipes, and they didn’t blow me away either. A lot were actually pretty unhealthy, calling for lots of sugar, fake meats and cheeses.
Thorough approach. Easy to read. Recipes didn’t have much for the infant/young toddler crowd. Looking to understand the vegan lifestyle, it’s a great book.
Good and helpful easy read covering some of the basics of raising your kids vegan, touching on many topics but not extensive on any of those elements. Good introduction, I suppose, but I guess I was hoping for more.
