The most reckless and fierce of the MacLeod brothers, Quinn is a prisoner of the god inside him, tormented by his inability to save his family from slaughter. His fury governs him, and day by day he loses himself to the darkness in his soul. But Quinn has a profound yearning for a woman's love. . . . Raised by Druids, the achingly beautiful Marcail is as spellbinding as the ancient magic that surges through her body. To Quinn, she is the most desirable woman he has ever known. But to his enemy Deirdre, she is the perfect bait to lure Quinn into her trap. Once the two lovers are in her wicked grasp, their passion will be put to the ultimate test.

I enjoyed this book more than the previous two. Quinn's story takes place mostly in his confinement. He has struggled to accept the past and his inability to save his wife and child. The God inside him has controlled him and kept him unstable. Now, in Deidre's clutches, Quinn has to find himself. It's an interesting place for a story to unfold.
Marcail has also been captured by Deidre. As a Druid, she's valuable to Deidre but some helpful spells put in place by her Grandmother keeps her safe. Instead of being killed for her blood, Deidre throws her in the same pit as Quinn thinking one of the prisoners will kill her. But Quinn is unwilling to allow that. He takes her under his protection and that's where things get interesting.
We learn a lot about Deidre in this book. I really don't like her. She's pure evil. Some of the things she's done is beyond horrifying. She needs to die. And while they think they did that, I'm not buying it. She makes a great villain.
As with the last two books, I have enjoyed this world and the idea of Druids and Warriors. The rewriting of history to add the magic and ancient Gods creates a captivating world. It is in this world that so many stories have been born. It's well done.
I did miss some of the other characters from the first two books. We do see them later in the book. And there are so many new characters added. I am interested in Broc's story. Arran and the twins also have my interest. Love that there are so many characters to move this series forward. More to come!
Definitely want more from this satisfying series that allows me to escape to another world.
I finished this book in less than 24 hours. I was anxious to see what would become of the final brother; Quinn MacLeod. The first 2 books had me wanting for more; this one not so much. Don't get me wrong I did enjoy this book but, I was a little disappointed. I will first explain the issues that I had with this novel. First, I know this may sound small but, I had a hard time picturing what Quinn looked like. It was easy for me to imagine the first 2 brothers, Lucan (Billy Wirth when he was in Lost Boys), Fallon (Alex O'Loughlin). Second, I was really bothered by the fact that his love interest-Marcail was thrown in the pit and that is where their love story began. I found it very had to believe how their love flourished among a very dire circumstance. Third, Quinn was a jerk (lovable and hot-headed) but nevertheless a jerk. We felt sorry for him in the beginning of the series when the brothers lives were explained and he lost his wife and son. Later, it is revealed that he didn't love his wife and that he was doing what was expected of him (yawn). So, I had a hard time feeling any empathy toward the fact that he was a man who had lost something. I couldn't understand his anger. The fact about losing his son that was very tragic so I could see why he would be devastated. But, he seemed like he was more angry with his wife than anything else. Then he did spend a lot of time Tomcatting about in some of the villages. He used some of the women as "disposable pleasures". Then we find out that Marcail was married as well and her marriage was loveless. Sometimes, I have a problem with tearing down former spouses in order to find/appreciate the new love of your life. There was also a very dark element in this novel. I know that the subtitle is called "Dark Sword" there were some things in the book that felt a little creepy. Enough of me being on my high horse. What I liked about the book was that The villian Deirdre story came into play. I loved the fact that the brothers were doing everything to find Quinn. There were some interesting story developments that happened in this last novel. One of the things that I think is just absolutely wonderful is the brotherhood of the Warriors as well as the brothers. They are willing to sacrifice themselves to save anyone in trouble. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. April 2011 is way too long.
Oh lord I loved this book.... AT first I wasn't so much a Quinn fan but wow have I changed my mind! Quinn couldn't have had a better heroine than Marcail, the Druid. I'm so looking forward to Donna's next book "Untamed Highlander"!!!!
This is the third book in the Dark Sword series and is a part of the greater Dark World. Donna Grant does create a wonderful world, with many fantastical creatures. So, if you find this book compelling and entertaining, the world does continue and evolve. This series was read as a part of the Audible Escape package.
This is the story of Marcail and Quinn. This couple each has something that Diedre wants, Quinn she wants his heart and his child. As for Marcail she wants a spell that is hidden in her memory and her magic. To get what she wants, Diedre throws each into the pit, where the two find each other and the will to stand up to the evil drough.
I liked this story a LOT. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was that it was set basically in one place however there was enough action to keep the story moving despite this. The paranormal elements again in this story were really good. There was just enough heat to make me happy and the love scenes where done well. The story it self was very good and the ending left me happy and wanting to read more. I'm very glad that this series is going to continue on with the other Warrior's stories too.
I found I have less interest in this series as it goes on. It feels just far to slow and a bit boring to me. I found myself skipping ahead with this book just to find out what happened. Not sure I would bother with the 4th book that is due out later this year. Problem with that is, there are characters I like and want to know where they end up and how the story ends.
Not only was this book boring, but Quinn was completely unbelievable and fascinated with sex at the most inappropriate times. Oh, you’re locked away in a dungeon with no privacy, time for sex. Your friend just got taken, time for sex. Ugh.
Wicked Highlander, book three in the Dark sword series managed to get 3 stars from me.
Quinn was in Deirdre's possession. He was chained, tortured continuously by Deirdre who was hoping he will fully embrace the power of his god, join her by becoming her consort and give her the prophesied child to rule the world. When Quinn resits her 'persuasion" she throws him in the Pit. At the same time her people find a group of Druids. One of the Druids has a powerful magic in her that could bind the warrior's gods again. Unable to kill the Druid - Marcael - due to a strong protection spell, Deirdre throws her in the Pit hoping that the warriors will kill her. Quinn saves Marcael and becomes her protector together with his friends: Arran, Ian and Duncan.
The attraction between Quinn and Marcael is instant. I do not find strange the fact that they found love in Deirdre's Pit but some of their circumstances are a bit odd. I was not a fan of the reason behind Quinn's acceptance to go to Deirdre and the way it penned out. Marcael's strong magic was not revealed and the fact that she had a block in her memory didn't work for me when there was need of magic. It felt like all the people were waiting and defending and nothing helped them. There was no magic and the one that was - weak. I wanted some balance between the good and evil to make the story more interesting.
At least Deirdre died temporarily to allow a break in the story and maybe the build of the plot in a different direction.
I am trying to figure when the Dark Sword will be mentioned and what is it's purpose because until now there's nothing. The good part is the Isla and Broc seem to have more depth and character for the future stories. I am hoping that the following book will bring more clarity to the plot.
Strange. I want to know what happens next, so I kept reading, but I don't like the writing. I like the world that miss Grant created but I find a lot lacking in the writing. I really can't understand why other reviewers give such high scores. Then again, they'll probably don't understand me.
I really really hate her dialogues. It is often silly and feels more like a page filler than anything else with repetition on repetition. Like (this is made up, but could have been in the book): how are you, asks X. How I am? I don't know, responds Y. You don't know? No, I don't know, Y says. Why don't you know? I just don't know.
The there is far too little show and - ofcourse - too much tell which is deadly for the tension in the love scenes. An example (again my imagination): He really felt compelled to kiss her, but held himself back with all the force he could muster. She looked at his lips and wanted him to Kiss her. I want to kiss you, he growles. I want you to kiss me, she wisperes. I'm going to kiss you if you look at me like that. I want you to kiss me. Are you sure? Yes. Please kiss me. If I kiss you I won't be able to stop. Don't stop. I want you. Are you really sure? Yes. I am sure.
Then I got bored with the romance itself. This is book 3 of 3 in this series in which the h/h have this instant amazing atraction to eachother before they even speak. I like the ocasional love at first sight as much as the next girl, but I also like some variety.
But... I'll probably read the next one as well. In fast forward ofcourse and I hope the writing will improve. All that is keeping me is the fantasy world. These books could have been so much better.
"Wicked Highlander" by Donna Grant. Book 3 in the Dark Swords series.
I really enjoyed Quinn and Marcail's book. It starts off with Quinn as we last left him, stuck in "The Pit" in Deirdre's (evil Druid) mountain. She is collecting good Druids to steal their magic from them. But she can't steel Marcail's magic because she has a protective spell around her that kills anyone who tried to kill/hurt her. So, Marcail is then dropped into "The Pit" with all the Warriors Deirdre has put in there to try to "break" them to her will. Quinn rescues Marcail from the other bad Warriors and decides to protect her and hide her from Deirdre because if Deirdre wants Marcail dead, there must be something special about Marcail. Is there something special about Marcail? Does she know something that might help them defeat Deirdre? Of course she does! But you have to read the book to find out what!
It was a little weird having the main characters fall in love in a dark and dank pit, with other Warriors around them and not really that much privacy. But it works well with the rest of the story line and the introduction of new characters (whom I hope have their own stories in the future).
Quinn MacLeod, the youngest of the three MacLeod brothers, has been captured and imprisoned by the evil drough Deirdre. Though Quinn knows his brothers will come for him, Deirdre has upped in her game of torture and wants Quinn to give her a child. Deirdre has also captured another druid, but oddly enough she did not kill this one to drain their magic. Marcail isn't as fluent in her magic as she should be, Deirdre knows she has the spell to bind the gods inhabiting the warriors, but it's buried deep in her mind. When she's thrown in the pit, Marcail is terrified of the warriors, but Quinn saves her and soon they are bound together in their fight to end Deirdre's reign of terror. I love this series, and love Quinn. Didn't love Marcail. She was not the sharpest knife in the drawer and couldn't follow an instruction to save her life. Most of the plot turns were a result of her not listening, thus causing really bad but totally avoidable things to happen. Everything else in the book was wonderful, wouldn't change a thing, but Marcail needs to take some Ginko Biloba and eat a lot of fish.
Only one woman can tame his heart—and capture his soul...
Donna Grant's Wicked Highlander, the third in her Dark Sword series; like the first two of this series I deeply enjoyed this book. This awesome story, like its two predecessors, the plot is extremely interesting, the setting is as enchanting as time, the mood thrilling on many different levels, and the characters fascinating with all their own issues and personalities. Plus, the story has warriors, battles of good and evil, monsters, horrors, magic, bravery, plotting, secrets, love and a lot lust, character flaws, mystery, soul deep rage and hate, at times tear jerking, a few funny things and so much more after that. I definitely want to read the next and fourth book, Untamed Highlander, where the question is Will she succumb to his immortal desire?
This novel is #3 in the series, "Dark Sword" by author; Donna Grant. I enjoyed reading this novel. This story was really captivating and dark but totally worth every page turned to read more. I loved the main characters and their stories. The concept of highlanders and druids in Scotland is really amazing. The writing really does pull the reader into the World of historical paranormal romance. The action, suspense, thrills, romance and heartbreak are incredible in this novel. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series. Yes! I would definitely recommend this novel, series and author for anyone interested in the genre. You won't be disappointed! Happy Reading!
This has quickly become a favorite series of mine. Historical paranormal romance - LOVE the genre! I must admit that I did enjoy the first two books a little more than this one. I think it was because I was so looking forward to Quinn's story that I was expecting a little too much. There was great chemistry between the leads, and I was glad to see the first two brothers also make an appearance. I'm thrilled to know that Donna Grant will be continuing this series with the other warriors who have met up with the brothers.
I loved this book! This story picks up with Quinn MacLeod, the youngest of the MacLeod brothers. At the end of the first book, Quinn is taken captive by their enemy Deirdre in order to fulfill a prophecy. While Quinn's brothers try to arrange his rescue, he is imprisoned in the Pit and is fighting to survive. While there he finds the one woman who may be able to save his soul and give him back his life.
The characters were compelling, especially the hero, and the romance was intense and passionate. The plot moves at a great pace, and I found myself completely invested in their journey.
However, there were a few minor details in the world-building that felt a little underdeveloped, keeping it from being a perfect read for me.
This book was filled with magic, action and romance. It was a well written story that will leave you intrigued since the first moment.
My favorite of the series so far. Hard not to read in one session. These books just fly by in about 4 hours or so for me. Quinn meets Marcail, a Druid in Diedre's dungeon, The Pit. Good blend of romance and plot development, which is significant. A ton of action and intrigue (spies!). Love the idea of the Warrior compound at the castle. Leaves lots of room for further books.
oops, haven't been on here in awhile it seems, finished this in september LOVE This entire series. This comes out tomorrow. Definitely a must read series. And I am not just saying this because Quinn is mt sooper seekrit husband. Can NOT wait for the next in this series, seriously.
Well...I can't quite figure out my full feelings on this one.
On the one hand, I've definitely been curious about Quinn/his journey since Dierdre kidnapped him. But at the same time, I spent a lot of this book rolling my eyes because he was such a whiny butt. Don't get me wrong, being held captive as well as being prophesied to bring a child of pure evil into the world would probably get anyone down, but he kept going on about how all he wanted was more time with Marcail but that could never happen and he needed to sacrifice himself to save everyone. Rinse and repeat. And for someone who seemed to have a modicum of intelligence, I was surprised he was fooled by Dierdre's little magic trick with Marcail because how could you not see that coming? But when he wasn't being a whiny dumbass, Quinn was pretty decent. I did like that even though he thought he was being a martyr and trying to stay behind, he was going to figure out how to get everyone out.
Marcail was intriguing as well but I feel like we almost didn't really get to know her. She's supposed to be a Druid with the one spell the Warrior's need yet the entire book is more about her falling in love with Quinn and not thinking it's possible for him to love her back. Even her fight didn't show up until the end and then it was really only there long enough to taunt Dierdre once. I guess I kind of thought there was going to be more to her, since there was so much emphasis put on the fact that the spell was buried so deep and anyone who tried to kill her would die.
The whole fight with Dierdre actually felt the slightest bit anticlimactic to me. Like she's spent 3 books promising she's going to have Quinn in her bed (and the whole interaction in her room in the last book was a huge NOPE from me because absolutely not) and his brother's and suddenly they show up and she doesn't even get a shot off. Granted between Isla and Broc alone, not to mention Quinn, Aran and the twins, there's going to be fallout to deal with in the next books but I guess for as big a big bad as it felt like the author was trying to paint her, I was expecting a little bit more fight in the "final battle".
“How he regretted the fury that had run his life. He would do so many things differently if he could. But there was no going back and reliving the past. There was only the future.” - Quinn, Chapter 5
Of the first three books of the Dark Sword series (so far), I enjoyed this book the most. The first two novels were good but this story was the most relatable for me and was action packed with so much intrigue that I was hooked from beginning to end. As well, although there has been some violence present in the previous two books, this one contains scenes somewhat reminiscent of George R. R. Martin’s GoT. Of course, there was also lots of scorching steam with sexually explicit scenes.
This story surrounds the third MacLeod brother, Quinn, and captured Druid, Marcail. I felt that Quinn experienced the most character development compared to Lucan or Fallon, as he realizes how the rage that has dominated his life for so long has affected not only himself but those people he cares for. As much as I liked Cara as a heroine in the first book, I found Marcail to be a strong female character that complimented the hero, Quinn.
As usual, the ending felt rushed and there were a few plot holes but nothing serious enough to detract from the pacing of the story. However, the author has managed to create a captivating world with otherwise well written stories that I look forward to further discover.
My favourite quote from Chapter 8 that I think encapsulates us sensitive introverts:
“Marcail released his hand and turned her head away. It was always easier listening to others than revealing anything about herself, especially a part she wished had never existed.”
Alrighty then, time to find out if Druid Isla’s fear comes true and is indeed found by Deidre.
I have enjoyed diving into this world of highlanders and druids, but this book is my favorite thus far. Quinn struggled the most with his god and as a result of other personal demons, he left his family behind because he couldn’t handle seeing his brother, Lucan, in love. He ends up being captured by the evil druid, Deidra, who has been trying to recapture the MacLeod brothers for centuries. Now there is also Marcail. She is thrown into this story and it takes her but a moment to establish herself as a strong, independent woman. She is rightfully scared out of her mind when she is thrown into the pit with the Warriors, but she stands her ground and refuses to let her fear win. Together these two make a great pair. Both are willing to sacrifice to keep the other safe and neither are willing to let Deidra play them for fools. While I look forward to learning more about this world and the Warriors and maidens in it, I hope to see more of Quinn and Marcail...they are a formidable couple and a delight to spend time with.
The book I have been waiting for and it did not disappoint. They finally are coming to get Quinn out from Diedre's mountain the throw down is about to happen but before that we have to spend 75% of the book with Quinn and Marcail getting to know one another and having a relationship. Which I am not knocking I mean we find out all sorts of things while under Diedre's mountain like Isla is not the loyal little pet and she is there for a reason. There is some questionable warrior locked up... want to know more about him already, and of course we see more of Broc and the side he finally picks. Now of course there is another thrown in Charron that is now up in the air and we don't know what side he will land on, but for now he is out of the picture. That ending with Diedre man I don't know what to think of that. I don't trust it for a second though. Of course I had to go to my library and get the next one so I will be continuing on through this series I am hooked.
Donna Grant writes the most amazing battles. I devour her books waiting for the explosions, the sword fights, the use of magic and anything else she throws my way. I didn't realize how much more listening to the audiobook would add. The audiobook was epic!!!
Wicked Highlander is the third book in the Dark Sword series. Learning the stories of the MacLeod brothers has been fascinating. Quinn has been held prisoner in a mountain. His brothers are determined to get him out. As I waited for the battle that I was hoping for, I learned about more highlanders that had a God. I am hoping they will get their own stories. Okay, not all of them. Some are just plain evil.
The Battle did not disappoint. I hit rewind and listened to it more than once. It was thrilling. It was exciting. It has me excited to see what happens in book four.
The only single MacLeod warrior left is Quinn. But he has been kidnapped and held in the "pit" by Deidre when he refused to get her pregnant. Marcail is a druid whose grandmother implanted the spell to get rid of the primeval gods deep in her mind. Deidre doesn't want to chance that Marcail will some day recall the spell so she throws her in the pit with the warriors. Quinn jumps in and saves her from several who want to use her for pleasure. Quinn has also formed a group of loyal warriors while down there. The main ones are twins Ian and Duncan as well as Aaron. Broc shows his true colors in this book. Isla also has a major role in this story. Lots of intriguing information in this book. I am enjoying reading about what began the journey of the warriors.
This is the third book in the series, and it's Quinn's book - the youngest of the MacLeod brothers.
At the end of book 1, Quinn was taken prisoner by the evil drough Druid Deirdre, who long ago discovered the secret scrolls containing the spells that would unbind the gods that traveled within the bloodlines of certain clans. When the Celts were unable to fight off the Romans, they banded with the Druids; the drough (black magic) Druids used a spell to bring the old gods from Hell to inhabit the bodies of the fiercest warriors from several clans. Using their gods, the Celtic Warriors fought off the Romans and eventually sent them packing. But the gods weren't ready to give up their hosts and return to Hell; so the mie (good, healing magic) Druids and the drough Druids combined their magic to create a spell that would bind or freeze the gods; but the gods were still within the Warrior's bloodline, and they always traveled to the next fiercest Warrior, waiting.
Deirdre discovered the spell to unbind the gods, but first she had to know which bloodlines carried the gods. The only name on the scroll that she found was MacLeod, so Deirdre relentlessly pursued the MacLeod brothers three: Fallon, Lucan, and Quinn. Deirdre massacred, butchered, and burned their castle home, all their family (including Quinn's wife and son), and the surrounding MacLeod villages. But she managed to capture the brothers long enough to unbind their god - for all three share the same the god, the Apadatoo the god of revenge. However, the brothers escaped Deirdre's mountain and hid for 300 years. They've been actively fighting Deirdre, the Warriors who've turned to join her army and quest to take over the world, and the creatures that she's created to do her bidding for the past several months.
Deirdre captured Quinn because of some old prophecy she ran across that indicated to her that if she and Quinn had a child, that child would be the embodiment of evil and allow Deirdre, Quinn, and the child to rule the world forever. However, we never see the prophecy for ourselves, and it's only spoken of; no one but Deirdre has apparently seen the real thing. But of the three MacLeod brothers, Quinn was the one who unleashed the god within him frequently, using it to vent his anger over all the loss. And the more a Warrior unleashes the god, the more power the god has over the Warrior.
Quinn had never been able to control the god very well, but since being captured, that's all he's done, unleashing the god only when necessary to stay alive. He survived torture and being thrown into Deirdre's Pit, fighting off the Warriors there. The Pit is the deepest, darkest Hell of her mountain, and where many Warriors break and volunteer to go to Deirdre's evil side. But Quinn has managed to win over several Warriors in the Pit - those who were still holding out against Deirdre. Quinn knows that if he resists Deirdre long enough, his brothers will rescue him; that's what keeps him going... until Marcail is thrown into the Pit.
Marcail is a mie Druid, whose Druid grandmother was very powerful. Her grandmother buried the spell to bind the gods deep in Marcail's brain. Marcail has a healing magic, including one that allows her to feel the emotions and pain of others and take it into herself, healing the sufferer. But she cannot for the life of her remember the other magic, including that binding spell. However, her grandmother surrounded Marcail with many spells and curses, so that anyone who harms her instantly suffers. Deirdre knows that she can't kill Marcail herself, so she throws her in the Pit, expecting one or more Warriors to do it for her and suffer the consequences.
But Quinn immediately goes to Marcail's rescue, and he and his band of Warriors protect her. Quinn made it look as though he'd killed Marcail, so Deirdre thinks she's out of the way. But of course, Quinn and Marcail fall in lust immediately, and then in love. They can't keep their hands from one another anymore than his brothers did in the previous two books, when they found their "soulmates". Which poses a hefty problem... what happens when Deirdre discovers Marcail isn't dead? And how long can Quinn resist Deirdre?
And what the heck is keeping the other two MacLeod brothers and their band of merry Warriors from rescuing Quinn? Fallon and Lucan are getting some help from Broc, a Warrior with a winged god who is acting as a double agent. But it's still a maddeningly slow pace fighting their way to Deidre's mountain. But are they in time? Quinn has agreed to go to Deirdre and bed with her, on the condition that Marcail is set free - which, of course doesn't happen.
Will the brothers MacLeod be in time? Can they stop the evil Deirdre - do they have enough strength and magic? -------------------- While I enjoyed Quinn's story, the actual battle with Deirdre was anti-climactic. So the last fourth of the book wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped it would be. It just felt as if all this build-up led to a final battle that fizzled. Even Quinn's battle with William, the Warrior who was jealous of Deirdre's lust for Quinn and wanted to be her paramour wasn't satisfying. This final, penultimate battle didn't seem any different from the other battles these Warriors have fought to this point. And that was just downright disappointing.
Then there's one more book... why? All 3 MacLeod brothers have had their day, and Deirdre is dead. What other business is left? For the sake of finishing the story and the remaining loose ends, I'll read it. But I can't say that I'm as thrilled with the series as I was when I stumbled into it.
For everything that has gone wrong in his life he deserves a little bit of happiness. When marcail fell into that pit he did what was best 2 save her cause being a highlander means saving the druids. It was a strange feeling pushing them 2gether. They were trying 2 save each other in different ways. He was surprised 2 know that a warrior was giving info but still doing that evil bitch's bidding 2. He liked his unique animal gift he found on accident. That god his bros came finally 2 save him and others especially when he realized that finally found true love and would do anything 2 keep her safe. Now its like a half repeat of his life but not completely. Lol
This was not my favorite of the series and it took me a while to get through it. I think partly due to the narration, I was able to tune it out too easily and then would have to back up a few chapters to regain the plot.
Quinn had a lot of baggage and I got a bit tired of hearing his angst over his wife and child, and i get it but it dragged on.
I did enjoy Marcail, she was an interesting character and I wanted more from that. then there were all the side characters
Interesting ending with the main villain out now, wondering what will happen going forward
