THE GRAVECHANGERS - Jane Ehlers Tombstones can be interesting, Jonathan thinks, but when the people who are buried underneath start roaming around, that's a little too much. And when they invade your house, and pull you down to their world, that's worse. Much, much, worse!
HAUNTING AT HOWLING OAK - Eve Marko When Zach has his friend Billy over, that's okay. But when his sister Maddie shows up with a friend she calls Alice, it's not okay. Because Alice is a cat, the meanest, most unnatural cat ever. But Maddie won't give her up. Then the accidents start...
THE HOUSE IN THE MIST - Sandra Shichtman Poor Sharon! She's got to do her science project with the newest, nerdiest girl in town. Not only is Mary strange, so's her whole family. Where do these people come from, Sharon wonders. Why are they so interested in her hair? And what goes on in that weird laboratory in their house?
Haunting At Howling Oak: 4 / 5 I was just about to give up on Fright Time until I read this one. I didn't like the previous Fright Time book that I read but this story really surprised me. I loved the concept of it which involves an evil black cat, an old haunted oak tree and an ancient family curse. This was such a fun story with some surprisingly tense and creepy moments.
The House in the Mist: 2.5 / 5 This one was actually decent and was slowly building in suspense but fell completely flat in the final act. The reveal and explanations for everything was ridiculous.
I actually kind of remember the third story, "The House in the Mist". Unlike the other Fright Time stories that stuck in my memory, however, it's not because it was one I was particularly fond of (that I remember, anyway). It's kind of a weird one, but seems... familiar? Maybe it was re-printed in another book? Or one with a similar plot-line?
I love the cover art. That cover artwork used to scare me green when I was a youngster. Reading the actual stories, the first one is the best and creepiest while the other two, despite having inviting scary titles, aren't as invigorating. Fun for nostalgia sake and that first story, the rest is just mediocre.
The Gravechangers One of the creepier stories from this series. The end is not really the end, but rather open. The writing for this story, and series in general, is pretty good.
Haunting at Howling Oak Decent, but your standard ghost story.
The House In The Mist I did not like Sharon all that much. Judgeing the new girl like she did, even though it turned out she was the villian... An interesting story to be sure but...
