This was okay-ish. The Zodiac angle was kinda cute.
I feel like young teenagers/pre-teens would love this, but I felt too old for this. I'm going to be 26 in April.
There was a moral to it, like not judging people even by their zodiac sign.
I thought the mean girls(TM) were a little too mean to be realistic. Not every single bully is a raging sociopath. I say that as someone who was bullied growing up, and has dated narcissists (and a possible narcissist sociopath). I also suspect my deceased father was a sociopath (but that's going off-topic). The point I'm trying to make is that yes, being bullied sucks, but not all bullies are heartless sociopaths. It was kinda comical to me, as an adult.
I am amused that the aries characters were basically portrayed as assholes. LOL
The cover was qt, but I don't think I will be continuing this series.
This might be a case it's not you, book, it's me.
This review is brought to you by my bad case of sleep deprivation from week long Insomnia. When I'm not manic. So I'm sorry if I make no sense.
Logan McRae wants to accomplish two important goals before finishing her sophomore year in high school: get accepted into a prestigious summer writing program and get a date with Nathan, the senior she can't stop thinking about. Her chances of achieving either goal seem remote until she happens to find a book in a closet at home called Fearless Astrology. Can Logan use the information she finds out about her teachers and friends by reading their star signs to help her get what she wants?
Aries Rising is the first in the Star Crossed series by Bonnie Hearn Hill. The premise is intriguing: use astrology to find out what motivates the people you know to act the way they do, then adjust your own actions to help you get along with them better and maybe get what you want in the process. It's a tribute to Hill's writing that Logan doesn't come off as manipulative in her quest.
She truly wants to understand people, and as she tests the things she's learns in Fearless Astrology, she also finds out how to see below the surface that most people project. When she looks past the preconceived notions she has about the English teacher many students despise and the art teacher they dismiss as ditzy, she starts to see real people, motivated by real emotions. This means she begins to relate to them differently too, and the reader can see her grow in the process.
Each chapter of Aries Rising starts with a quote from Fearless Astrology, setting the tone for the action to come. Each chapter also ends with a "Notes to Self" section written by Logan. Even though the book is told from Logan's perspective, these notes are similar to diary entries, and they reveal a little more about her than what the reader learns from the chapters. Each of these features keeps the action moving along.
There's also a bit of mystery involved. A group of students dubbed The Gears has been vandalizing the school. Their actions escalate as the book progresses, and Logan is convinced she can figure out who they are and stop their actions by using astrology.
I believe Aries Rising is a great book to read with a mother-daughter book club whose girls are in high school. Moms can remember their high school days, and daughters can identify with their current experiences. Both will likely know with what it feels like to be insecure and thinking that many people around you are more confident and have their lives more together than you do. In many ways that seems to be a universal feeling, and the lure of using a book to help you figure it all out is strong.
The astrological information is also fun. Logan talks a lot about what she learns for each of the sun signs of the people around her. Once she gains more confidence, she digs deeper and looks at moon influences and rising signs. You'll also find a page of temporary tattoos for each sign inserted into the back of the book. It all may just send you out looking for your own version of Fearless Astrology.
Logan McRae loves writing. Her wish for the summer is to go to a summer writing camp in Monterey. She also wants to be semi-popular in school so she can land Nathan, the hottest senior around, as her boyfriend. These feats seem impossible - until she discovers a book called Fearless Astrology.
With this book, she's able to figure out what personality tendencies people have: her teachers, the school newspaper editor, and Nathan - landing her the boy of her dreams, the column she's always wanted, and the recommendation she needs for her writing camp.
When things get out of hand, however, and a rumor gets spread that Logan is going to identify the Gears, a group of students who are terrorizing and vandalizing the school and teacher's personal property, her life spins out of control. Deciding to try and do just what the rumor suggests, Logan starts using astrology and a website she finds online to figure out when the Gears will strike next.
The Gears, though, get intimidated and start trying everything they can, even dangerous tactics, to stop her from identifying them. Will Logan figure out the members of the Gears in time, or will they do something harmful to both her and themselves?
ARIES RISING is a fun, fast read. The characters are complex and likable, even the school bullies. The plot is intense and enjoyable, and the author even manages to throw in some unexpected humor. Those who like realistic fiction, friendships, humor, mysteries, and a bit of romance will all enjoy reading ARIES RISING.
I'm not very engaged by the story, the characters nor the themes, but the writing is decent enough and it's nice to see a teenage heroine who has goals and schoolwork in mind instead of romance and boys. 3 stars.

The start of a new series, Aries Rising is a light-hearted story about her girl and how she proceeds to change her life after reading a new book on Astrology. Naturally, there’s a lot of references to astrology so if you’re into that, this will be a great read. I like those bits too, but I got confused every time it was about which planet was in whoever’s Moon or some fire sign was interfering with an Earth sign or whatever; so I pretty much took them for what they were, bookends for the chapters as they sort of foreshadow what’s going to happen in the chapter following it.
I found it a little hard to believe that astrology can be so useful to someone’s life and that just by taking advice from a book, her life is magically better.
In terms of content, Logan is a likeable character. A little shallow in that there doesn’t seem to be a lot in her life except for the writing camp and Nathan. There’s fleeting moments when she talks about missing her mother and her father and her not being close but it doesn’t seem very in-depth. Her interactions are mostly with her friends and with Nathan, so generally, it’s a chick lit. But her friendship with Paige and Chilli was written really well. They make up such a fierce sisterhood; they would literally do anything for each other.
The “mystery” of the novel is about The Gears, which is a secret society that vandalizes property and writes offensive messages on the school wars, etc. I did manage to guess who was the “leader” of sorts of The Gears pretty quickly, but it was still a good read, and who knows? Maybe you’d be able to find the mystery better crafted. :)
The ending is typical of a light-hearted story. Most of all the loose ends are tied up but it definitely leaves room for a sequel, which is something I don’t mind reading as well. If you’re looking for an easy read, feel free to give this series a try.
"...I don't know what kind of spell you put on him, but it worked."
Bonnie Hearn Hill brought astrology to high school life in Aries Rising, the first book in the Star Crossed series.
Logan McRae is a sophomore in her high school who's trying hard to get into a summer writing camp. But first, she has to deal with Mr. Franklin, her English teacher (whom everybody calls Frankenstein).
Frankenstein wants it personal, and as an Aquarius, Logan feels like she just can't.
Also, there's Nathan, (the senior that Logan kissed last year) who is hunted by the perfect Geneva. Nobody can resist Geneva's cute butt. Or her beauty. While Logan thinks she doesn't have anything in her favor, one day it just did.
Chili and Paige, Logan's two best friends were in Logan's house when they were discovering Logan's mom's old high school stuff (Her mom is a professional golfer, therefore is on tour at the time). In the box of ancients, she found a book called Fearless Astrology.
Now she's ready--with tips from the Fearless Astrology, she's going for Nathan, the Leo who loves spotlight, helping Chili and Paige for their own love lives and catching the Gears (a group of kids that pull pranks around the school) at the same time.
After all, there's Fearless Astrology to guide her. What could possibly go wrong?
What I like about the book: Funny, fast-paced and mysterious. Especially the part regarding Gears.
What I dislike about the book: Nothing. It's pretty much interesting reading about new things--Astrology, I mean.
Inspiring, uplifting, and heartening. Logan McRae is a normal high school sophomore who lives in Terra Bella Beach, CA. She deals with struggles through her friends, guys, school, and family. But, when this ordinary girl discovers this magical book, "Fearless Astrology," all she wants to do is change her life. If I were to gush about other characters than Logan, it would be her two best friends, Chili and Paige. They are always there for Logan and would help her till the world’s end. They stick together, no matter what. I couldn't walk away from this book without another perspective on life. Motivational and enchanting!
This book was a quick read for me, I finished it in one night. It was about a high school sophomore having a normal life. Until, she finds a certain book, that is. Fearless Astrology, the book she found, helped her get her crush to like her, and impress her teacher. She also uses this book to try to find the identity of the Gears.
Note: I finished this book on the second and then started writing this on the second and then got side tracked and forgot about it and then remembered and finished writing on the 9th.
Well it’s the second day of 2019 and I have finished my first book of the year! Now only 239 more to go. I have also crossed the first book off of the PopSugar Challenge list (goodbye prompt 33! One down 49 more to go).
Logan McRae is you average high school sophomore who wants nothing more then to land the University of California at Monterey Bay fellowship and of course the guy. The only thing standing in her way is Mr. Franklin, affectionately know as Mr. Frankenstein who decides the fellowship winner , and Geneva Hamilton, the beautiful editor of the school newspaper who also has the hots for Nathan. That’s when Logan discovers Fearless Astrology in a trunk of her mothers old things and unlocks a whole new world. Armed with the book and her two besties, Chili and Paige, Logan is out to win the fellowship, Nathan, and unmask the Gears. The Gears are a group of troublemakers that have been terrorizing the school with pranks that push the boundaries.
This is my second read of this book and it holds up. I love Logan as a character. Shes driven and shes got a good heart. Her reasons for wanting the fellowship are at first a bit eh but she eventually gets to the root of why she wants it. “Her writing” also seems a bit week to me especially somebody in journalism and who wants a journalism fellowship. Her firsts drafts were always better in my opinion. As a fellow Gemini I absolutely love Chili! She’s outgoing, talkative, and caring, plus shes got some wicked style. Then there is Paige who is basically just a pure little cinnamon roll (who has a pension for tattooed older men, which now that I am 23 is a bit strange cause as a sophomore you are 15-16 years old and her love interest is in junior college so 18-19 years old which is a bit illegal). The friendship between the three girls is actually how I wish more female friendships were portrayed not only in books but in all media. They were supportive of each other and embraced each others similarities and differences. The antagonist, Geneva, is a fairly good one. Shes smart, cunning, and undeniably pretty. She reminds me of a few girls I went to high school with. Then there is the love interest Nathan, which if I am being completely honest not that big of a fan. Unlike most of the leading men in the novels I read hes kinda just blah. I didn’t find myself “shipping” their relationship nor did I find him to be a good match for out Logan. He was just a tad to dull and a lot to narcissistic.
Overall a really good start to my little project, the year and the trilogy. I am still in the mood for early 2000s books that I would have/or did read when i was in junior high or freshman year in high school that are just kinda cheesy and a super easy read and this book definitely fits that to a T. I would recommend it if you are into that sort of thing but I would not just offhandedly recommend it to somebody who was asking for a recommendation.
Yes, I realize this is a YA novel but I was looking for something to read and it was available. I have read some YA in the past and was quite impressed. This did not impress. Now it did bring back how I must have acted and talked when I was back in high school and the only thing was how cute a guy was and would dating him elevate me in the social strata. I could not figure out the school... it sounded like the lockers were outside?? how did they get access to them. I also wondered why her friends let her do stuff by herself. The zodiac angle was interesting and fun... I thought they book never tied up the relationship to the not present mom and Logan and dad needed to fix some things
The title caught my eye when I was browsing through a book fair. I didn't think much of it, only that it seemed interesting so I added it to my basket. When I got home, my interest piqued so I picked it up and started reading.
From the start, it pulled me in. I've been interested in astrology for some time, that's why the title called out to me. But what I know about astrology is still very little compared to the vast study.
Aries Rising was a fun read. It had an honest and relatable main character, fun and interesting side characters, informational chapter starters, and overall a great storyline. Even though I had my suspects, the mystery played through my head even when I was asleep.
Would recommend this to anyone who's into/curious about astrology while having a knack for YA books.
I enjoyed the writing. At first, I had a hard time getting into it. Maybe because I don't really care about astrology; and the entire concept of measuring people's behavior solely using signs is silly, in my opinion. However, the story takes a turn, and Logan (the protagonist) becomes a very strong character with lots of good qualities. She's determined, a good student, fair, but still a teenager with many qualities of one. It was nice to see a protagonist who has a crush (Nathan), but doesn't let her life be ruled by it. It ends well. YA- There are a couple bad words, but nothing scandalous. Fun read for middle school kids.
The edition of the book I had was nice to read because of the book format (words per page) and the smoothness of the pages. The story itself was interesting because it includes the zodiac signs and the protagonist learning about them for the first time. I didn't really understand why she liked the boy - as in what admirable qualities she found in him, except that he's hot. I also didn't get why she didn't figure out that he was the culprit. I had figured it out 100 pages before she did. She seemed kind of slow of a character to me. I liked reading the book nonetheless.

This YA novel was unique. The premise was the protagonist, Logan, decided to use a book she discovered, "Fearless Asyrology," to change her life . . . The information and advice she gleaned from the book gave her personal confidence to reach for the goals she wanted. With her friends, Paige and Chili, as supporters, this Aquarius begins making positive changes.
An afterthought: The "issues" Logan has with her mom's absences don't seem thoroughly addressed or resolved.
I know this is classified as "young adult" but I, a 46 year old gay man, enjoyed this book. I liked it for the "using astrology to solve a mystery" angle. I see that there are two more in this series and I look forward to reading them as well.
Cute and entertaining, as someone who does not know anything about astrology, I did not even try to keep track of the references. Still enjoyable, surprisingly touching ending.
I consider this book a win. I would have loved this as a tweenager. Also, I realized how little I know about astrology. Now I'm inspired to read more about astrology.
This book is great. Aquarius Logan McRae is a high school has been working all semester to impress her teachers in order to get into the summer writing camp she wants to go to. She finds a book on astrology. When she used what they learned about the zodiac, she got her own page in the school paper and a date with the cutest guy in school. When Logan try's to catch the members of a secret group called The Gears, who have been vandalizing school property by reading the stars, she learns that it is not as easy as she thought it was. The theme is use what you learn.
Aries Rising was a cute book. It was a light, easy, quick read, and I have to say it was better than I expected. I don't really believe in the astrology stuff, and this author made it so that the novel didn't shove astrology down the reader's throat, which was good.
Plot: It took a while for the plot to really get going, but once it did I liked how it all panned out. The climax was good, although it wasn't more dramatic than the mirroring scene (The first time Logan sneaks into the school), and maybe it should have been. I liked how she didn't end up with Nathan, because he got on my nerves. Predictability wise, I figured from the beginning that Nate was one of the Gears, but Geneva was a surprise.
Characters: The main character, Logan, was a good enough narrator. She was relatable, but too obsessed with the astrology stuff. I suppose she had to be though, for the book to be about the astrology stuff. I love the name Logan, which was a plus. Sometimes there are names in novels that just annoy me. I liked Logan's friends, Chili and Paige, and I wish there had been more of them, and a little less of Logan's whining. I liked how the astrology stuff worked with each character, but I wish at least a few characters would have been more three-dimensional, especially Geneva. That was probably one of the main things that bothered me a bit about this book: Geneva was completely one-dimensional. I like villains better when you know how they got the way they are, and when they have a good side, and are more human. Geneva was only painted as bad, and that bothered me. I had a feeling there was more to it than that. And here was when the astrology stuff got a little too shoving-down-my-throat-like, that Aries are never trustworthy and that Libra's all lie. (But maybe that will be changed in the next book) I am one of those two signs, and I would like to think I'm not evil. Stars don't make people good or bad. I suppose there's one reason I don't believe in astrology. Mr. Frankenstein (I forget his real name) reminds me a bit of a Physics teacher I have, which was kind of strange while reading the book. I kept picturing said physics teacher.
Writing: The writing was good, I thought. I liked how there was a "Notes To Self" section at the end of each chapter. It was easy to get into Logan's head and world, and the writing never bothered me. In fact, it flowed really well. I read the whole novel yesterday afternoon, in a matter of hours. The writing was probably one of the main reasons I stuck with the book, even when other aspects bothered me.
Ending: It ended well. Everything wrapped up a little too perfectly, but that worked for this novel.
Overall: It's worth reading. Not my most highly recommended, but if you have a free afternoon and want to read something that doesn't require days and lots of deep thinking, this is wroth a read. Will I read this again? Maybe, maybe not. Will I read the sequel? Yes. The writing was good, and most of the characters were likable. I would like to see what happens to Logan next. This book is worth reading if you've got some spare time, so I recommend it. The astrology aspect was kind of interesting, the plot is entertaining, the characters are good, (Not to mention the gorgeous cover), and it's worth reading. Maybe those who really believe in astrology will really, really like this book. I for one thought it was pretty good (despite all my complaints). I will definitely read the sequel when it comes out.

So, I'm not actually into astrology. I know they say it's a science and all, but I've never really believed it. That being said, I really REALLY liked this story. This first book in the series was a sweet spin on YA contemporary fiction. Taking place in Terra Bella Beach, a town some 90 minutes outside San Francisco.
I don't know what it was about the book that I enjoyed so much. Maybe it was the different subject matter, or maybe is was the excellent writing. I'm not sure, but whatever it was, I'm glad for it.
Aries Rising, the first in the series is a captivating story of a young girl who finds her way through the crap that is high school and into a world where she actually feels like she has control. Well, as much control as the cosmos will give a girl anyway. Logan, our main girl, was a fun character for me. In the beginning, she doesn't seem to know exactly where she fits in the whole scheme of things. She knows what she wants, but has no idea, really, how to get there. Until she finds a book in her dad's stash of junked items. This is where the story begins. Logan uses this book to help her discover things about life and herself.
Now, personally, I know some people gave this book grief because of the astrology aspect, but for me, I figured if I can read books about vampires and zombies and fairies - which I have yet to see any proof of their existence - I can read a book about astrology and get it. And, yeah, I really did feel for Logan throughout Aries Rising, but she seems to be able to pick herself up and keep pushing through. Plus, once she finds her groove, she says what she feels and that, above everything, is what I love about her. I've always wanted to be able to do that and be eloquent, and she hits it on the nose.
Although, it always seems like her love life is a bit in the crapola range, if you know what I'm saying. I felt a bit like the Trix bunny all over again and that love wasn't meant for Logan. But, I supposed that's what a good author throws at us. They make us wait for the good stuff so it's just that much better in the end when we finally get it. Which isn't so much the case in this book.
I'd say, overall, this book was fun and entertaining. I always like some good YA contemporary fiction, it really helps on those days that seem to drag. It was light and made me think. And although I don't really believe in astrology, let's just say, after these books, I'm a bit more interested. So, if you like secret gangs who streak, teenage fashion designers, Armenian food, and some vehicle vadalism, than you should pick up this series.
Author's Purpose- The author wrote "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" to show her readers that if they believe in themselves then, they will be able to achieve more and their confidence level will go up the more they achieve. She, also, wrote "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" to entertain her readers. "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is filled with action and "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is a interesting book, which makes it to where the reader never wants to put the book down.
Theme- The theme of "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is that people need to be more confident in themselves because no matter how much they want to change the way they live their life, once they figure everything out, they will appreciate what they got. Sometimes, people just need a little bit of a confidence booster, which is what happened with Logan. When Logan found "Fearless Astrology", Logan's confidence level went up and Logan felt like she was in control of her life.
Style- "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is an event. The author is very dicriptive and makes the reader feel like they are in the main character's shoes. In the beginning, the narrator discribed Logan's competition for Logan's dream guy Nathan. Then, Logan's friend helped Logan with a report and they found a book called "Fearless Astrology". "Fearless Astrology" changed Logan's life completely. Later, Logan was getting to talk to Nathan in person, which Logan never got to do so Logan, then, started to feel more confident aout getting a chance to be with Nathan. At the end of the story, Logan finds the second volume to "Fearless Astrology" and takes the book with her.
My Opinion- I think that "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" was a good book. "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is the type of book that I never wanted to put down. "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is an easy-to-read book and "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" is easy to understand. Being someone who soes not like to read, I really enjoyed reading "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising". "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" has a lot of action and "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" always makes you think about what is going to happen next. I really recommed reading "Star-Crossed: Aries Rising" if you have not already read it.
This book surprised me! I honestly did not think I would like it as much as I did. I have never read anything with astrology as the main focus before. Before reading Aries Rising, I knew little to nothing about astrology. Sure, I knew my sign is Taurus, but I had no idea that that was just the beginning. I was surprised to discover that I enjoy astrology. I learned so many interesting tidbits about it thanks to this book.
I liked how the chapters were set up. Each chapter starts with a little passage from Fearless Astrology, Logan's go to astrology book that essentially changes her life. Then the chapter ends with a sort of journal entry from Logan. There is also a What's Your Sign section and Star-Crossed tattoos in the back, which I thought was kind of cool.
The story was so much fun to read. I thought it was so original that Logan used her astrology skills to better understand and snatch her crush, Nate. It was exciting to see her use her knowledge for her own good. I did not this book to have a mystery in it, so that was an added bonus. It was fun to guess who did it.
Aries Rising is definitely an inspiring book. I loved how Logan and her best friends grew into themselves throughout the book. Thanks to Fearless Astrology, they discovered the confidence they always had inside of themselves.
As you can probably tell, I really enjoyed this book. Aries Rising is like a good present. I did not know what to expect before opening it, but it was a great surprise! It was definitely a nice surprise. It was interesting, intriguing, original and full of mystery! I loved how it was written. It is definitely one of the most fun books I have read in a while. I think teenage girls will devour this book.
Let me begin by saying that I would never have read this book had it not been a free giveaway at ALA, along with the second in the Starcrossed series (which I will read as well, although probably not review). Aries Rising was entertaining, but it will not be the latest teen fad or receive critical acclaim. Learning about astrology is (for me) amusing, but I cannot help laughing at how seriously Logan takes the whole thing. No comment is ever made about the obvious drawbacks of astrology (like the fact that every person born at the same time and place will not have the same personality).
The book does manage to avoid getting too cheesy, which was definitely appreciated. While she does moon over Nathan, she does so in a very realistically high school way, rather than in a Twilight-ish-we're-totes-in-love-already kind of way. Her relationship with her teacher, Frankenstein, and her friends are believable as well, and probably the best part of the book. The plot and the revelation of whodunit are straightforward in obvious. The guilty parties for the various pranks and graffiti-ing that occur within the book are obvious almost as soon as they happen (to me although not to Logan or anyone else in the book). Logan is convinced for much of the book that one of the Gears is a guy with a lot of tattoos, regardless of the fact that one of the pranks involved the Gears streaking past while Logan and her friends were in Chili's hot tub; if one of them had tattoos, she would have seen them. Such obvious deductions are above and beyond our teenage astrological sleuth.
Recommended for teenage girls who check their astrological forecast every day.
