The Inferno Club: In public, this scandalous society of London aristocrats is notorious for pursuing all manner of debauchery. But in private, they are warriors who would do anything to protect king and country.

I wanted to like this. I really did. This author has written a ton of books in this series and I love finding a new author with a big catalogue of work to read.
I didn't.
It started off bad when the hero and heroine were named Jordan and Mara. In 1816.
I can handle some slight flexing of historical accuracy in fiction, but I found it hard to connect to characters with such contemporary, out-of-place names.
Then there was this exchange: "Sorry I'm late." "No worries."
Again, in 1816. They have to at least TALK like they're in the right century. Sort of. A little bit. But NO WORRIES?? I couldn't deal.
Then there was the moment when the hero climbed a metal fire escape on the outside of a run-down building in Seven Dials. It's still 1816. They didn't have external fire escapes in 1816, especially not in the slums. That's just sloppy, incomplete research.
I did end up finishing it, mostly because I wanted to see if I could overlook the wrong details if the story was strong enough. I couldn't. I found the hero's reasons for not going after the heroine at their first meeting to be inconsistent and lacking depth. It was like the writer couldn't settle on WHAT the conflict was, so she went with a bunch of things, none of which made sense with each other.
And I found the writing style to be too overwrought and melodramatic. Just not my thing.
The sex scenes in this were totally my catnip, one in the carriage and one in the library? nice.
I do like second chance romances, Mara and Jordan were separated 12 years ago because they were too young and time was not on their side. Mara also had neglectful, slightly abusive parents and she was desperate to get out of their thumb which is why she made a hasty marriage. So to me their separation made sense and it made sense to me WHY they were good for each other now, that all this time had past and they were more settled and grown up.
The romance in this didn't set me on fire but I grew to enjoy Mara and Jordan's dynamic and I liked that Jordan showed a lot of affection for Mara's son Thomas and her household staff. Another thing is that I like that Gaelen's heroes don't usually spend a lot of time angsting over whether or not they're good enough and usually cut to the chase, and leave external circumstances to keep the couple apart, which works for me better.
The Order subplot was much better in this than the previous two books I think, since they were all directly linked with Jordan and Mara, and also Drake's recovery was a nice tease for the next book.
My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book. This one's got 2 parts.
Have to say, so far, I'm quite happy about this one. I've been hooked since the 1st chapter. Jordan proved to be one sexy hunk (to my 'not being interested' in him earlier *my review of My Wicked Marquess*, lolz, I thought he'd be kinda bland ... silly me!). I really like Mara and her toddler Thomas. This child kinda stole my heart without doing anything. Well, I love kids and Thomas is just adorable. :)
So, Jordan and Mara had a history 12yrs ago. They met in a country house-party and kinda fell in love there. Jordan was on the verge of taking his first mission as an Order agent and Mara was living a miserable life with really horrible parents, specially her mom (seriously, what kinda mom is she? :@). One day Jordan happened to 'rescue' her from her mom and they formed a really easy-going relationship. But, sadly, it went nowhere since Jordan saw his duty towards the Order more important than Mara, even though he loved her...
12yrs later, they meet again, almost suddenly. Mara is now widowed, lived a 9yr of miserable married life, whose only saving grace is Thomas, her 2yrs old. Mara is quite happy about this life, being independent. She doesn't want anything to do with men ever. Her friend and one high-society hussy Delilah (she's quite the thing, vain and self-centered, totally opposite to Mara. I'm not really sure how they even manage to form a friendship!) spotted Jordan in an auction, where she was with Mara. Delilah had no idea about their history together. And so it began.
Jordan's on another mission now, you know, a part of the ongoing one (from My Wicked Marquess and My Dangerous Duke). But, he's a guy anyone would love. He's the sensible one in the team, always were. Unlike Max and Rohan, he likes to be in the society, at least he used to like it. But, working as an agent took it's toll and Jordan's life been estranged somewhat from the society. He feels alone and out of place. So, when Jordan saw Mara, he wanted no part of her.
Actually, they hated each-other at this point because their thoughts on each-other were gravely misleading. Jordan thought Mara didn't wait for him, married some viscount in a yr after he left. And Mara, of course, thought Jordan felt nothing for her, left her when she needed him the most. He didn't even write to her and she was forced to marry that viscount just to save herself from her horrid family.
All these are narrated over the course of the story. Mara is rumored to be Prinny's mistress because of her close relationship with the Regent, which isn't true. Prinny was her husband's good friend and is her child's godfather. She's very devoted to him because he helped her keep her son when the viscount's family tried to take him away. So, at some point, she is attacked by the mob on the street for that rumor and Jordan saves her and her kid. This incident helped them sort out their differences. Also, the Order has a mission for Jordan, which includes Albert the dandy and needed Mara's help. So they devised a plan ... Jordan and Mara are now lovers but for Jordan, it's not only about the mission, he wants Mara back in his life but not sure what she wants. He feels guilty about not telling her the truth. On the other hand, Mara knows nothing about Jordan's secret life, she's in seventh heaven and of course, ever in love with Jordan but scared either way because she's also unsure of what to do.
Lord, have to see what happens next ... :D
PS: I loved how Jordan was with Thomas, really sweet. Also, Jordan and Mara's relationship is wonderful to read. There's more about Drake, who's saved and ran away again, his story is a subplot. Got to know more about the 'violet eyed' girl, Emily, who loves Drake but knows, being a gamekeeper's daughter, she'd never be with him. Also, confused about Drake's eye-color (don't laugh!). It was bright blue in My Dangerous Duke, now it's coal black. Oh, why oh why the authors do that? I've seen it before in some other author's book and I hate it! Overall, since Gaelen Foley is still setting up plots for the next books, it's a lot to take in... ************************
Wow, really. I.loved.it. Last few chapters were so good, I wanted to throw my hands up in frustration ... yah, I didn't want it to finish and the fact that I have to wait for a yr for the next installments. :( The book was intense, heartwarming and heart wrenching. I found glimpses of old Gaelen Foley in many places. Seriously, at the beginning, even though it was a better read than the other two, I doubted it'd be anything that intense but it was. Lots of adventure, things are heating up with the Council and the Order.
So, lots of twists and turns, a killer on the lose (seen him in My Wicked Marquess and My Dangerous Duke), Drake's 'joining' the Council again (with Falkirk), Mara and Jordan's falling-out, the revelation about Virgil and Niall's relationship, the killer abducting Thomas ... then things became really good. I have to say, enjoyed it much and yah, last 3 chapters made me cry. I couldn't help it.
Loved Jordan, I've already mentioned how he turned up (sexy hunk extraordinaire, loved all the love scenes in this book, which includes one carriage and yes, Prinny's own library hihihihi :p) in my other comment. He was a gentleman 'til the end. Mara wasn't stupid so even though they had the slight misunderstanding concerning his work, ultimately she didn't give up on him. I applauded that she didn't leave him after Jordan saved Thomas from that killer and went after him when he was pursuing the man. She had to, really. Even when the killer was blackmailing her for a certain list, she had to think of her son, though her love could've gotten killed for that ... I mean, really, what do you do in a situation like this? She's a mother and chose to save her son. It was really tough, I felt so sad for her. Son or the love of her life, both life in danger. Can anyone make a choice here?
The honest thing is that, the last few chapters were perfect, I was gobbling them up, couldn't put it down. And then, when the killer was killed, Jordan knew he's gravely injured, might not live ... Oh, what a heartbreaking scene that was! :(
Anyways, again, I loved Thomas, such a cutie pie. In the ending chapter, his mischief with Jordan and the rest of the Order team was a joy to read. Very very sweet. I'm happily giving it a 4.25. :D
PS: for the next installments:
1) Already know Drake is with the Council now, the party which want to throw the current leader out. Although he isn't quite ok from his ordeal, Drake has a plan it seems.
2) Emily has followed him to the continent. Drake can feel it with his instincts.
3) Viscount Beauchamp aka Beau's given name is Sebastian and he doesn't like if anyone calls him by that. Another Seb? Hmmm, hope he can keep up! lolz He's a bit younger than the other members. Still unsure about him.
4) I wish Niall would turn out to be different. Well, I know it won't be that but I have a serious urge to see him redeemed. No idea why. :/

After Reading bks. 1&2 of the Inferno Club bk3. is a disappointment. I didn't hate it, but I slightly disliked it. Its seems the author in an attempt to change up the H/H characters of this story has done them and injustice. Jordon Lennox is The Earl of Falconridge and warrior/spy for The Order of St. Michaels. He isn't written as smart and intelligent as the Hero's in book 1&2 he is almost killed by the Promethean Assassin Dresden Bloodwell and one of his men is killed. Falconridge got outsmarted more then Rohan and Max in bks 1&2. The conflicts in the story went own until the end, way too long. Jordon has been separated from his lady love Mara Bryce now Lady Pierson after Jordon didn't return for her 12years ago. She got married and had a son, years later in her marriage. Her husband Lord Thomas Pierson is dead. I didn't like the way Mara's character was written either she was not fierce like Daphne and Katherine/Kate in bks 1&2. 12 years is much to long to separate a couple, now Mara is almost 30 which for women of this era is little old. It would have been an excellent story if there was not so much conflict and angst which only makes characters look dumb and weak. This is a change for this author she usually writes smart alpha males and smart intelligent, fierce women. But it was not so in My Irresistible Earl. This story reminds me of something my grandmother use to say "If It Aint Broke Don't Fix It" I am also, not a great fan of widows and have gotten tire of the spinsters storyline too. Although Mara has been married and isn't classified as a Spinster. They were separated so long and then they weren't together much in the story that it was hard to believe that they were in love with each other more like lust and passion for there young love 12 years prior that had been denied.
I will go on to read bk 4 My Ruthless Prince but this could be the end of the road for me reading The Inferno Club series. This story was a disappointment.
This was the first book of Gaelen Foley's I've read. The Kindle edition was on sale at Amazon for a limited time, and since I'm conducting my own survey of what works and what doesn't in Regency Historical Romance, I thought I'd give the book a try.
As a romance, this book falls on the blah side of the scale. The hero and heroine met ten or so years ago, fell madly in love, but were separated. This mostly happens off the page, although we do see their meeting and their goodbye. They had to part because Jordon is a member of the Order, an ancient, well, order sworn to protect the Crown against the nefarious Prometheus Brotherhood. And the Order comes well before young ladies,, no matter how deep the feeling.
When they meet again, Mara is a widow with a toddler, and Jordan is back in London on a mission. Mara's marriage was unhappy, yet she is less than thrilled to see her first love, who she thinks abandoned her. Jordon, for his part, is disgusted with her because he asked her to wait for him - yet she married another within a year.
And here's my first problem with the book: Jordan is actually that much of a numbskull to be upset that Mara - who he knows was verbally abused by her mother - married another even though he NEVER WROTE TO HER OR GAVE HER ANY INDICATION OF HIS SINCERITY. Wouldn't waiting for someone who never contacted her make Mara an idiot instead? Besides, hello, early 19th century Britain - Mara pretty much belonged to her parents and would have had no easy way to break from their control and be able to live a relatively comfortable life on her own while waiting. It's not like she could just get her own apartment and find a job.
Meanwhile, Mara is much more understandably upset at Jordan's radio silence (although we find out he's been monitoring her life from afar - seriously, writers, enough with the stalking motif.) Nor does she want to introduce unknown factors into her son's life, especially as the Prince Regent had to help her win a custody battle with her late husband's family. Her desire to keep her distance from Jordan is far more believable.
But of course, strong sexual attraction, true love soulmates, yadda yadda yadda, and both their objections are easily overcome. One third of the way through the book.
Which leads to my second problem: This is ostensibly a romance, with Mara and Jordan as the hero and heroine. But we never see them fall in love - that happened long ago and off page - and we never really see them struggle to get their HEA. I am less than invested in their relationship. I mean, they seem like nice enough people (even though Jordan is patently allergic to straight talk, and Mara becomes TSTL toward the end. Seriously, people, use your words and communicate.) But...I don't care.
The book then becomes a Regency Robert Ludlum Lite, abruptly breaking off from Mara and Jordan to detail the exploits of other members of the Order. I get it, this is a series. More books need to be sold. But I feel like I got 1/3 of Mara & Jordan's story, 1/3 of Drake's story (who pops up suddenly and takes over the book), and 1/3 of the Order vs. the Brotherhood in the Case of the Disappearing Assassin.
Which makes me really glad I bought it on sale, because paying 1/3 of the asking price was only fair in return.
Drake did steal the book in a big way, and I'm tempted to pay for the rest of his story. But only tempted.
My Irresistible Earl by Gaelen Foley Book #3 - The Inferno Club 04/11 - HarperCollins Publishers – Mass Market Paperback, 400 pages
Is your first love the lasting one or a forgettable blush….
Jordan Lennox, the Earl of Falconridge knew from the first moment he set his eyes on Mara she was the woman he wanted for the rest of his life. But their first meeting could not be the groundwork for a lasting relationship as he had been inducted into the Inferno Club and had to fulfill his duties as a spy working with his brother warriors. But after 12 years of devoted service Jordan again encounters Mara who is now the widow Lady Pierson and still as dazzling and captivating as the first moment he saw her.
Mara lives her life as a devoted mother to her son Thomas and pillar of society despite rumors that she is the King’s mistress. Keeping one’s head about the fray of gossip is not easy, but a woman used to criticism can deal with anything and her loyalty to the Prince will not be tainted by filthy, unfounded rumors. She owes him so much that cannot ever be repaid by a simple thank you and no one will convince her otherwise.
Jordan tries to hold back his feelings for her but they are so overwhelming and consuming even his duties to the Inferno Club cannot stop him from pursing Mara again. Jordan sees Mara as his ability to have normalcy in his life and her beauty dazzles him so that all he sees is a life surrounded by her love. However Mara is not so sure that everything can return to the way it was because there are trust issues between them and she fears he may lie to her again and leave her wanting for his love not basking in the warmth of it.
When an assignment for Jordan causes him to bring Mara into his realm of mystery and sneaking about in the night will Jordan be able to use her as a ploy to get the information he seeks or will he make the right decision and let love rule his heart? It is difficult for Jordan to make this decision because so many rely on him as the voice of reason but with Mara’s love on the line all bets are off on what he might choose as the right road to take?
This is the 3rd book in the series and shows why Ms. Foley rules the historical genre. The plot is fresh, the characters engaging and the twists go this way while the turns go another. You don’t know who to trust and who is the liar so stay alert or you will be reading the book again to see what you missed – which is not a bad thing if you think about it.

The thing with romances is that it starts well but then there is always awkward phrasings, names or really cringe statements repeated like "warrior brothers". Like seriously, it's like that Black Dagger Brotherhood series with all that "my brother" crap.
Honestly, if men actually spoke like this, well I would die from cringeness.
Please, for the love of god, authors stop using these cringe phrases.
This book definitely had my blood boiling. The heroine, Mara, had me feeling quite murderous. How infuriating it was when she kept interrupting Falconridge when he was doing something terribly important - like protecting the country! - with her silly little demands and theatrics. Then as if that wasn't bad enough she goes and hands the whole list of the Orders agents to Bloodwell to protect he son, which was justified but she could have just told Jordan when she meets him on the way. Jesus. There just wasn't anything likeable about her and when she does get the chance to redeem herself, like shooting Bloodwell... she doesn't. Just no. This heroine DID NOT WORK FOR ME.
On the other hand, I stil have to say I'm in love with Gaelen Foley's work. This one fell short of five stars because of Mara but her supurb writing and plot crafting kept it from being boring and mediocre.
One a finishing not I am incredible excited about My Ruthless Prince which I'm dying to read. URGH I wish I could get my hands on it. If anyone has the ebook and is willing to do a swap with me (for another book), let me know by commenting :D
My least favorite of the series. Great Narration by Marian Hussey. (audible review).
This was my least favorite of the series and not nearly as good as the second book which I thought was amazing. This one not so much. Kind of a struggle to be honest. I liked Jordan a lot. But really, Mara could be annoying at times.
I like the spy part of the book, but I have read much better spy books. I don't want to give too much away in my review. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either. I just wish Jordan had a better stronger heroine. He deserved it since his character was awesome!
As for the narration, well really??? It was Marian Hussey so Amazingness is the word. I love her narrations. She does a great job on the male voices and everyone gets their own distinct voice and she reads with emotion. She has a fantastic reading voice too.
Although somewhat predictable I couldn't put this book down. I loved Mara and Jordan's second chance romance. It was poignant, sweet and one great adventure. The spying element was good. I like a little danger in historical romance and the suspense really ratcheted up a notch in the final few chapters. I liked the secondary characters as well, particularly Drake and Emily and I look forward to reading their story next. The narrator does an excellent job of performing the different characters. There was quite a variety; male, female, older, child, and a change in accent when necessary.
I haven't read the earlier books in the series but I am impressed with this book so I will definitely be going back to check out the others.
In reading historicals, I am not usually real big on the perilous adventures of the hero/heroine as such. But can I say I was thoroughly caught up is this rousing, charming tale of intrigue.
The Earl of Falconbridge, Jordan Lennox, is the irresistible earl of the title. And oh yeah, he was certainly all that and more. Jordan is every inch a Regency James Bond, in looks, carriage and countenance. Recruited into the Inferno Club at a very young age, Jordan receives intensive training that would make MacGuyver jealous. Centuries old secret society to fight evil, and promote chivalry, Jordan is determined not to become bitter, cynical and cold as the older agents.
Cut to 12 years later at Christie's Auction Rooms in London. The heroine is Lady Mara Pierson, widow. Her friend Delilah has informed her she is being watched quite intensely by a very handsome man. But Mara is not interested. She is trying to secure a painting as a gift for the Prince Regent, a particular friend. Plus, she is enjoying her independence and has no use for men at the moment, even though the ton thinks her true friendship with the Regent is much more. her life is full, especially with her toddler son, Thomas.
Imagine her surprise when she finds out the handsome man is none other than Jordan Lennox, bringing up harsh memories of pain and anguish of her youth. And heartbreak. She thought Jordan was her true love, until he left her without a word, 12 years before.
In essence, Jordan has become that hardened, cynical aloof man he swore he wouldn't be. Twelve years of being a spy out of the country can do that to you. Seeing Mara again has rocked his world, though he does not show it. Their meeting is frosty and full of disdain. But the spark still remains. Mara is not aware Jordan is a spy, she believes he has been off living a decadent life of a rich aristocrat regardless of his talk of working for the Foreign Office. Suddenly they are thrown together at dinner parties, as it is said, there is a fine line between love and hate. Jordan carries his own hurt, Mara did not wait for him, she went off and married Lord Pierson. breaking his heart, though he would never admit it to himself. Jordan was at the auction house as he is in the middle of a mission. A mission Mara soon finds herself wrapped up in. There are a couple of flashbacks which fleshes out their past a little more, and some subplots concerning other members of the Inferno Club that are quite riveting. The villain, Bloodwell, is almost like the Bond nemesis, Dr. No. Slick, intelligent and deadly.
Jordan soon hears the gossip about Mara and the Prince regent. After he rescues her from an unruly mob of Corn Law protesters, the couple actually begin to talk, and clear the air on some matters. And Jordan for all his outward cool, inside he still loves Mara deeply, even asks to be let back into her life, in whatever capacity she deems fit. Even to be her pretend paramour to lessen the gossip about her and the Prince.
Pretend does not last long, especially when they kiss, all the passion comes roaring back. And yow for that encounter in the carriage *sizzle* Ultimately it is about love lost and found again, trust and forgiveness. Jordan is a great hero, cool as Bond, but like Bond, when he falls, he falls hard. He tries to keep Mara safe and away from his intrigues, but it is to no avail. She is in it up to her neck. An exciting finish and great set up for the next book.
When Jordan, Earl of Falconridge, bumps into his first love, Mara, Lady Pierson after twelve long, secretive years, the spark they once shared is brought back to life. Mara is attending an auction to secure a gift for her friend, Prinny, the Prince Regent while Jordan is their on his mission to find out more about the Prometheans and his undercover work for the Inferno Club. Mara is shocked to see Jordan after all these years and is not about to let him back into her life after he deserted her when she needed him the most to escape her cruel mother. Jordan and Mara meet just at the time when he was being called off to duty for his undercover work as a spy, for which he had trained his young life for, and even though he wanted to marry Mara first, he knew his duty had to come first. Mara marries swiftly afterwards to have her own home away from her nitpicking mother and finds herself in a loveless marriage with a man that dislikes her and drinks his life away. Thankfully, she is able to conceive Thomas, who is now her whole life.
As Jordan and Mara are tentatively feeling out their new relationship, brought more into focus after Jordan rescues Mara from an attack on her carriage because people think she is Prinny mistress as she spends alot of time with him (he is really just Thomas' godfather and they are just friends), Jordan is dealt a new mission....to spend more time with Mara and use her connections with Prinny to gain access to a select card game with one of the clubs prime persons of interest. Jordan wants to refuse but knows he has to accept and does so while he and Mara continue to redevelop their love for each other.
After Jordan decides he needs a bit of a break from Mara, to protect her, Mara takes matters into her own hands and finds Jordan and breaks up an important conversation he is having and he loses his cool with her. She flees and decides she is done with him again and feels her heart breaking. She agrees to hear Jordan out the next day and he confesses his past and reasons for his anger to her. Mara is naturally shocked to find out Jordan is a spy and quickly connects the dots of her and her relationship with the Prince Regent and is furious. Thankfully, this misunderstanding does not last long and the story continues on to quite a satisfactory end, and a cliffhanger epilogue for the next book!
Out of the three Inferno books out so far, this one was my favorite. The first one, My Wicked Marquess sort of set up the premise for this series and the second, My Dangerous Duke , it took me a bit to warm up to the scary duke and the virgin sacrifice plot, but this one is a wonderful story of young love triumphing in the end. While you could read this as a stand alone, there is a continuing plot throughout that may make more sense by reading the previous books. I am really looking forward to the next book featuring the wounded Drake! Some bits and pieces were revealed in this book that should make his story fascinating! My Irresistible Earl offers a great story of love, plenty of twists and turns and intrigue and it kept me wanting to ignore my kids and finish reading it! 4 solid stars for this one I received this ebook via netgallery.com
What I did like: -the heroine's coquettetry. Usually the coquette in romance novels is the mean girl who bullies the heroine, but in this one, Mara's just doing her best to get out of a bad, emotionally (and physically) abusive family situation in the only way a girl back then could: by marrying. -the hero: he's steady, calm, reliable, and calms her down. (Although, everyone kept saying how flighty and immature she was when she was younger, you never get this sense because Mara is not like that anymore. Jordan breaking her heart and having a bad marriage beat that out of her) -how she told him she loved him: she was pissed, it came out in an almost bust-up, but she said it anyway because "love's not a scorecard". -less of the Order vs. Promethian stuff, which I've stated before how much I hate it and think it's stupid. -GREAT break-up fight.
What I didn't like: -I thought Jordan and Mara became friends (or friendly) too quick. Jordan broke Mara's heart by walking away twelve years ago to (in the most annoying romance novel trope eeeever) "protect her" and join the Order, and she's all "independent widow who needs NO MAN" but then she starts falling in love with Jordan ASAP. I expected some hesitancy to even be friends with him. I expected her to be wary of letting him get close to her after he left and she grew to hate him. -The Misunderstanding. When Jordan backs off (to "protect her" again--ugh), he REAAAAAALLY didn't need to act like a jerk to get "space". I mean, honestly, Jordan. What did you expect was going to happen? -His excuse why he left in the first place: that she was immature, reckless, indiscreet. Ugh. That really annoyed me. He was afraid he'd tell her this secret that involves many of his friends' lives, and she'd just go blab it all over town because she's "young"? Wow. That's some mutual love right there, Jordan.
This one fell kind of flat for me. I liked the characters, but the plot wasn't really there for me.
Oh my gosh! If only the first two books were this good! This is what I was wanting from this series! I was so anxious to pick the book back up every time I had to put it down!
First, Jordan is a vastly improved hero than the last two. There was some darkness to him, but he tried to balance himself out with thoughts of life and the reason he was fighting for his country. He saw his duty as just that, a duty to uphold and not as some tiresome burden he was forced to do. He was generally cheerful, but smart and handsome, had been pining for Mars for 12 years, all goods things for a good hero!
Speaking of Mara, I really did enjoy her quite a lot. She wasn't some thick-headed silly girl - she had a good head on her shoulders, having grown up with ogres as parents, and then marrying such a terrible husband - despite it all, she could take care of herself and didn't wither at the first sign of stress or trouble. She was a tad overbearing as a mom, worrying over the tiniest sniffle, but if that was her only flaw - I'll take it.
I did love Jordan and Mara's relationship and the way it developed. Yes, they were super attracted to each other, but the gradual buildup and courting was very sweet. I was right there with Mara, heart melting after he went with her to visit her horrid parents, taking the brunt of their badgering for her. I would have rewarded him the same way ;-)
There wasn't a ton of movement on the Order/Promethean front, but a little. Tons of action and more talk about it. Oh and Drake! If his book isn't this good, I'll be so upset! Not too sure how I feel about Emily, his heroine. Hopefully his book does him justice!
I’m not usually one for the “reunited” storyline; that said, this novel drew me in. Jordan and Mara fell in love before he left for duty, but when he doesn’t come back Mara moves on in her life. Years later, Jordan must return and protect her from threats resulting in a close relationship with a prince, and use his growing relationship with her to infiltrate the prince’s close-knit group. When they are thrown together they must confront their shared past and find out who they are now, and what they can share – in the present, and maybe in the future. I really appreciated that having read only one of the other books in the series I could follow the plot without feeling confused. Mara is a devoted mother, and Jordan has to come to terms that her life continued without him. At the same time, Mara has to decide whether she only wants to be a mom, or if she should free herself from societal restrictions and take what she wants. They bring out the best (and worst) in each other. Jordan has become bitter and hardened from the work he has done for the crown, and Mara has buried her needs beneath her motherly instincts. While the mystery is predictable, it moves the story along and gives them each a chance to prove that they are not the people they once were, but perhaps that’s a good thing.
