Big and Little are the best of friends and enjoy spending time together, but Little isn't sure what to do when Big decides to hid in his shell. Little and their friends try everything they can think of to lure Big out of his shell, but in the end, a simple hug is all that's needed.
I like the simplicity of this story and how straightforward it is; the solution is solid too. PreK-2.

A darling story about two friends, a squirrel, and a tortoise. They are best friends, so when Big goes into hiding (in their shell), little does everything they can think of to coax them out. Finally, it is a hug that brings Big out of their shell and makes them feel happy again.
I really love the illustrations, and coupled with the simple text this is a great read-aloud story. The illustrations are bright and big and vibrant. I especially like how Little's tail makes his body almost as large as Big's shell. I really like how Big's shell is purple, my favorite color.

recommended by the children's librarian extraordinaire i work with, Big Hid is a lovely picture book about friendship, and what happens when sometimes your best pal feels down. Simple words, short sentences, and earthy toned and tactile illustrations make this a beautiful lap read with a learning reader.
honestly, as someone who does have times where i'd like to hide, this book so lovingly shows what depression//sadness can be like (no matter what you do, it doesn't work) but showing up is what matters.

A great book with adorable illustrations that can easily start the conversation about sadness, depression, social anxiety...a host of emotional issues that can be complicated to explain to little ones. One could argue that the solution of a little hug making Big want to come out of his shell again is very much oversimplified, though. But, again, it's a conversation starter...

A squirrel hangs out with his turtle friend--but one day the turtle goes in his shell and doesn't come out. The large eyed, vacant stares of the animals are endearing. Kind of an abrupt ending, but there are several funny pictures (when the squirrel tries to lure Big out of his shell with cake. Or the page where they "climb" together, and the squirrel hauls the turtle up on ropes).

It's the little things that make a difference. I think the texture of the paper in this story makes the pictures better. I like the illustrations and the story is sweet. Big and Little are best friends. Big is having a bad day and hides and Little tries to find a way to bring Big out of hiding.

I loved this book. It's a great way to teach kids about affect and how to handle someone who becomes non-responsive.
I love the illustrations. They really had depth and there's a lot of fun tid-bits on each page for children to find.
Highly recommend this book for young children.

Cute little drawings, but was missing substance. Turtle is ?sad and hides in his shell. And then comes back out at some point after a hug. Why was he in hiding in the shell? Why did he hesitate to come out? Questions not answered

A beautifully illustrated friendship story.
Bright and clear characters and backgrounds with a deceptively simple story with a strong message about friendship.
Love it!

Cute story, nice pictures. Good to bring up a counterpoint to the message in the book and let kids know that sometimes hugging isn't what people want, and not hugging isn't a bad thing.

I don’t have any kids, but I have a 10 year old brother and a 3 month old niece. I am a bit out of the loop when it comes to children’s books, so I apologize in advance if my review offends anyone. (I entered the giveaway with the intention of giving the book to my niece, but I still need to write the review)
In all honesty I thought this book was stupid. The story was too simple, and missing a huge plot point. Why did Big Hide?
I feel like that should be an important part of the story. The back cover says “A tale of friendship and overcoming sadness,” but the story has no indication that Big is hiding because he is sad.
I did really like the colors and illustrations in the book. The illustrations are different from anything I’ve seen, and they are fun. The colors are bright, happy, and warm. As weird as it sounds I also liked the physical feeling of the book. It is fairly big (10.5″ x 9″) and the pages are very thick. The texture of the pages is rougher than a normal page. Almost like construction paper.
I didn’t want to be unfair in my evaluation (I feel really bad calling a children’s book stupid) so I looked at other reviews online. Most people just said it was beautiful and they liked the simplicity. One person said Big Hid “can easily start the conversation about sadness, depression, social anxiety” I disagree with this because there is no indication he is hiding because he is sad. No one had anything bad to say about the book, so I was still worried about my review.
Next, I brought the book to work, and gave it to a coworker to see what she thought. While showing her the book, a couple other guys joined the conversation. Kristin, who has a 1 year old, thought the book was incredibly stupid. (her words not mine) Andy, who has two daughters aged 3 and 6, thought the book would be okay for a 2 year old. Kristin disagreed saying that she wouldn’t even bother reading it to her 1 year old. Andy did say that halfway through he thought Big wasn’t really hiding but that he had died, which would have been a little morbid, but not completely out there. Gary, who doesn’t have kids, liked the illustrations, but thought the story was too simple. All three agreed (without any prompt from me) that it was weird that the book left out why Big hid.
I decided to go ahead and give it an honest 3 star review. It is a children’s book so it is supposed to be simple, but it is missing a major key issue. Other than that I didn’t have any issues with the book and I liked the illustrations.
