Aileen Travers #4

Dawn's Envoy

Rate this book
A favor owed, a hunt like no other. A courier for the shadow world no more, Aileen’s former protection is gone. Alone but still defiant, she survives one night at a time. Sure, working a dead-end job isn’t part of every young vampire’s dreams, but it pays the bills. When the darkly seductive Liam calls in a favor, she’ll find her carefully constructed world tilting on its axis as he draws her into a dangerous game against a wily enemy. The High Fey—creatures as powerful and beautiful as they are deadly—have come to town, their motivations unclear as lines are drawn and shadowy alliances made. And with them, they bring their Wild Hunt where everyone is either predator or prey. Betrayed and marked as its quarry, Aileen will find surviving until dawn has never been this hard. The only thing that might save her—are the vampires she doesn’t trust.

Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later, and I threw my cookies at her head. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.

Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companion, Loki, who would like to try her paw at typing.

We finally have romance, folks! And I gotta say it was worth the wait. Reading this series back to back makes me feel like my reviews are repetitive. I loved everything about this book for the same reasons I loved the first three, with a few additions. First, the romance finally kicked in and second, we learned more about Aileen and what she can do. Which is pretty cool btw. I'm still hungry for more. It's going to be a struggle to wait for book 5.

Review for Books 1-4

I liked the premise of the series, and the overarching plot as well as the more finite plot in each book. The author always has strong world building, so no issue there. Honestly, the issue is Aileen. She's very whiney. I get it, agreed with her on a lot of it, and wanted to see her stand behind her decisions. Sadly, like most female main characters nowadays, she becomes a brainless twit when a hot man enters the situation. This girl has damsel in distress down, and is constantly getting rescued. In book 4, their relationship goes from casual flirting to sex in no time and it's just dumb. I would have been ok with it if the character could have respected herself after. Seriously, this guy manipulates her, bullies her, and forced his will on her; just 24 hours before the intimacy, she is forced by her side to drink human blood while Liam just watches. That was a deep betrayal, and then she turns around and sleeps with him? Ridiculous. Instead of sticking to her guns in anything, she just gives in because he's so cute (barf).

What is it with authors thinking women are idiots over a pretty face?

Some of you will think forcing her to drink blood is justified, and you'll say it was what was best for her. IMO, that's condescending. People make life choices; forcing them to do something because it's best for them is a level of arrogance that is appalling. Instead of giving her info, they mindraped her into doing it. If she wanted to destroy herself, then it's her choice. And oh gee, isn't it nice that the big strong men are the ones in charge to make this decision for the little female.

Some of you will say they did it because they care about her. Read above about Liam. Manipulation and control aren't love, and we all know Thomas is just in it for what he gets out of it.

In the end, while the plot is interesting, the author failed to deliver a character with gumption. She constantly complains about lack of knowledge but doesn't use the tools available (cough, book) to rectify that. Instead she blunders from situation to situation getting rescued and manhandled because that is apparently what makes a female character interesting. God forbid she use her brain and fight her own battles. Listen, I'm not a fan of her being alone, but I am fan of her having some inner strength and actual character, and Liam earning her trust after constantly betraying and manipulating her. The idea that that's what women want in a relationship is just sad.

Instead of building a strong character we get a typical romance author's female twit who is all talk and no heart.

What a disappointment after Pathfinder.

3 1/2

I do like this author and this series. It might not be my favorite, but UF is still the genre I love most. Aileen Travers isn't the best series out there, it isn't fresh enough for it. But then it's incredibly difficult for it to be after 20 years of writing this genre.
As a plus side it has good world building, a good plot in each book and a good one in the overarching story.
The reason I can't rate it higher is that I can't resonate completely with the heroine. I do like her, but I can't appreciate the fact she's unable to stand up for herself. She's either forced or manipulated into situations or ignored/kept in the dark. But apart from getting angry there's no reaction.
Think about the forced feeding: yes, they did to save her life, but they could have tried to show her the video before doing it. Yes she is angry but nothing comes from it. She rages, but doesn't really react.
And honestly I can't imagine why she caves to Liam. He's not better than Thomas, he did brand her like cattle against her wishes and has forced her through 4 books... and she never really does put limits.
I may need a job, but if you tell me I'll need to obey your orders, I would think to put limits to that given the context and the fact they are trying to force you to join the ranks.

I'm not sure I buy all the reasoning she gives herself about caving (she misses the team blah blah blah). You might not be a loner (she seemed to be), but I am not sure that's not a writer-imposed excuse.
So for how much I liked this book, it left a bitter aftertaste.

I might not agree with her rating, but I stand with her words:

All kinds of addictive fun! At this point in the series the characters have developed and grabbed the reader’s heart, the nuances that at first were a bit frustrating are unraveling and allowing for much more depth and understanding. And, the storylines are just all sorts of can’t-put-down action! Loving it all!

It's been a long time since I was that excited when starting a book. I cannot put into words how much I adore the authors work, they're so, so satisfying to read. Now patiently waiting for her next release.

Good lord it just ended ....just like that, with the words.....

"It wasn't much. Just a few photos, a birth certificate and a name. Bryan Volsk. My biological father"

That's just not good enough, it can't just end....... isn't that deemed a human rights violation, if it isn't shouldn't it be!!!

Well, the fae came, saw and tried to conquer the vampires, Aileen made new friends and enemies..discovered new strengths and wondered why she bothered with family, in the midst of the Wild Hunt.

I loved Liams' intensity and met his old flame, while Thomas betrayed her trust again only, to try redeem himself
..SIGH what a great book, and now we wait again.

The story started interesting, but the primary love interest spoiled the whole book for me. The guy uses physical violence to separate Aileen from her friends and allies, threatens physical violence to anyone who dares to touch her, because he owns her, and stands idly by, while his boss mind rapes her (for her own good, of course)

That's an abusive relationship, if I ever saw one. And Aileen accepts all that, because the guy is so hot.

Didn't finish it

The best parts of this series are its drama around Aileen struggling with her nature and the demands of others while trying to live for herself (and sometimes failing), and the emotional baggage of things like her family situations.

Unfortunately, it seems to be doing its level best to kill that part by making Liam some kind of irresistible hunk even though he's an absolute creep. "Mind rape this woman (who, by the way, still had no motivation for what she did) or kill her? I guess we just have to, I certainly couldn't imagine opposing your will. Strip me naked and put yourself in bed with me just after I deal with the trauma of losing my battle to feed and learning my niece is dying? SO HAWT. It's just so magically right to do this!"
Spare me.

This book in particular isn't helped by the climax being so rushed, with a bunch of telling that makes its delivery fall absolutely flat.

She thanks a fae when she shouldn't and it never comes up again so I assume that's just a continuity error, and is it the Blue Pepper or the Blue Pickle?

I received an ARC in an exchange for an honest review.

So it’s no secret that I’m a big fan of TA White’s work. Her works has a lot of action along with some romance, great character development and I just love the plots. Can’t go wrong with any of her books!

I’ve been waiting for this book and *THE* moment that happens in the book. I loved it - so action packed and there’s Fae in the book which I love reading about!

There is definitely going to be a book 5. No cliffhanger at least.

I’m torn ... is this my fav series of hers? Or Pathfinder 🤔 They’re both so good. The Dragon one isn’t bad but just in the beginning stages so it’s not a fav yet.

Not kindle friendly

I really love this author, my problem with this e-book is the rendering on the kindle app was horrible. I cross checked it through the website, and the online version was fine and no issues. Please fix the kindle version! Adding spaces before punctuation and in words to justify the line spacing is unacceptable. Seeing spaces before an apostrophe is initially confusing and distracts from the storyline.

I even changed font sizes to see if the ebook version was optimized for a specific font... nope, no such luck.

Completely unrelated, but the best line in this book is when Aileen says “Nom, nom nom”

Pretty disappointed how a self-appointed badass and strong, independent woman can be such a damsel in distress all the time. Apart from that, I really have to say that I hate the vampires. Liam's only "redeeming" quality seems to be that he's hot. That's it. And can we talk about Thomas? I mean, can we talk about all the mindfucking and manipulating and how Aileen just takes it, whines about it but never acts on it?

I've said it before, I'll say it again. The problem in this series is not world-building or plot, it's the characters. They suck. They are not likable. They just suck.

Content warnings:

I definitely have some conflicting feelings about this book. Each of these books has stripped more of Aileen’s humanity away, forcing her to face some hard truths, and this book is definitely the culmination of that. Most of this review is my reaction to specific events, so this is a giant spoilerfest!

If last book was the werewolf book, then this is the Fae book. A delegation of High Fae is coming to Columbus, but the vampires may be on the hook for more than just hosting duties. The Fae intend to hold a Wild Hunt to power the formation of a new barrow, and they’ve roped in all of the lesser fae to participate, including Aileen’s ex-boss, Jerry. Now working with Liam and his enforcers, Aileen tries to frantically keep her friends from becoming the Wild Hunt’s prey, but she may have miscalculated who would be the best sacrifice of them all.

Overall, while I’m still on the fence about Liam and would happily punt Thomas into a volcano, I’m enjoying the heck out of this series, and I can’t wait for the next book!

What happened to this series? Aileen has become whiny bitch who's arching her eyebrows and sighing continuously. She constantly endangers herself and others. Chemistry between Liam and her is like from cheap YA-book, them bantering like teenagers. Sex didn't salvage anything. I don't remember dialogue being this bad in previous books, let alone in Firebird series. Worldbuilding is good and plot solid, so I suppose I'm going to finish their story.

Aileen is growing on me, she is still too stubborn for her own good, causing more trouble for herself than needed. I liked getting to see more behind Liam's history, the fae were interesting. How she manages to get herself stuck in these situations is the worst luck ever. I can't wait to find out more about who Aileen actually is, hopefully that will become more apparent in the next book

What’s not to love, everything I’d want in an urban fantasy and with Tobey’s great writing - this book was perfectly fast paced, kept me intrigued the whole time and only made me fall more in love with all the characters! Love how much more of this world we discovered, the fae are here and there is just so much worldbuilding woven in so well, I’m hooked, all the new stuff is so interesting and I need answers to all these hints and clues!

The romance really blossoms in this book, things are developing more and more, and heating up, between Aileen and Liam, and I loved it!! Also I was just eating up how he cares for her, how he opened up and was more vulnerable too, and of course how clear his feelings were at the end! These two are so feisty and passionate but their soft moments are definitely the best <3

Aileen and the enforcer group are so funny, love that she’s joined them and the way they joke around, they’re all such fun and give off lots of older brother energy with her. They always end up breaking their composure around her and it’s so funny! Nathan is hands down the best, their friendship is top tier and towards the end I was getting so emotional, their last scene was so cute - friendship goals!!

Connor!!!! Yes, ok iykyk so exciting and interesting! I loved rereading and picking up on all the hints and slyest of important wording. Also Daddy Thomas continues to grow on me, I’m definitely enjoying his role more and loving the slow developments between him and Aileen. That one softer moment between them omg!

This is definitely my favourite of the series so far (I feel like I’m saying that with each consecutive book lol but what can I say Tobey just has me obsessed).

Update - 10/21/24 - 5 Stars

I just finished my reread of this whole series in preparation for the next release, and wow, I don’t know what my reading experience was the first time around, but I absolutely loved all of these books. The story is progressing smoothly and the pacing is on point. I remember thinking that it felt a little slow my first read through, but it’s working for me now! The Firebird series is still my favorite series ever, but this is definitely a contender for runner up!

Hello, welcome to book 4.

:deep sigh:

Anyone - and I literally mean ANYONE - who has read at least three urban fantasy series (or the old Buffy books from the late 90s/early 00s) has stumbled upon The Wild Hunt before. Depending on how involved the Fae are, possibly very quickly.

Essentially a Fae's Wild Party, its not usually portrayed as fun times. Its...wild, untamed, brutal and darkly seductive. Those involved lose themselves. Depending on the source the Wild Hunt is either endless (because the prey is too wily to be contained) or heavily controlled by conditions as old as nature itself.

Well Aileen got herself sucked into it and somehow she either moved up in the world (in terms of respect) or made more enemies/antagonists who relish the idea of dissecting her.

Here's the thing - until maybe the last 10% I was gonna scream and drop the series. Aileen doesn't seem to learn. She's PISSED at Liam because he goes on a classified mission instead of flirting with her, PISSED at Thomas for saving her from becoming a raving loon, PISSED that folk didn't explain the dangers of the life she was thrust into.

Except from Day 1 these people have all but BEGGED her to listen. To give them a chance. To LEARN. And she wouldn't because she was afraid it meant giving up control of her life. Which I'd respect if she'd use the resources at her disposable to prove she was capable.

Near as I figure it Aileen is kind of like Kate Daniels and Bo (from Lost Girl). Like them she finds herself suddenly thrown into a world she's desperately tried to avoid and immediately told "fall into a neat category box", which she rebelled against. Her main love interest is pretty powerful and very bossy, but devoted to her, even as he hides some dangerous secrets. Every time she takes a piss, she attracts unwanted (and extremely powerful) attention leaving her usually worse for the wear.

Unlike Kate or Bo, Aileen's stubbornness isn't born from a deep rooted knowledge of how to survive. Her suspicions, while justified, blind her 10 out of 10 times from realizing she has the power in every situation. Even when folk are trying to kill her, she has the ability to turn the tide and LEARN.

Instead she hobbles herself with obsessive paranoia about everyone's motives.

Then, miraculously, she fucking grows a brain in the last 10% making LOGICAL and REASONABLE decisions. I almost wept in relief.

Despite flaws that are still very present (including the fluctuating intelligence of the heroine and logic flaws) this fourth part is well constructed and has a good plot. The last part of the book is excellent and redeems most of the lengths and slush that precede.

Slightly better than the last one. The beginning was a bit tedious but it got better.
But sorry, the romance did not really convince me but I don't really like the characters very much. But the world-building is okay.
Will read the next in the series as well.
