Bedtime is a special ritual for parents and children. Lullabies often play an important role. This best-selling version of the beloved lullaby Hush Little Baby is now available in a sturdy board book making it perfect for sharing with the youngest children.
Sylvia Long is the illustrator of several books for children including the best sellers Ten Little Rabbits and Alejandro's Gift. Ms. Long's detailed paintings are inspired by her love of animals and the outdoors. She lives in Arizona.
The pictures are gorgeous, soft colors and lots of detail; the shooting star is a favorite of the children in my classroom. The words have been changed so that instead of the parents buying things for the baby, the items mentioned are found in nature or around the house. This story is a favorite in the classroom, we read it a dozen times a day.
This is the book to buy new parents. I flailed to remember lullabies but reading this one a few times stuck it in my memory. It rewrites the classic lyrics to be about experiences rather than purchased. Perfect.
Hush Little Baby is a book featuring a mother and child bunny as well as the classic lullaby many of us grew up with, only a little different. The words have been adapted, but the general idea is still the same. I enjoyed reading this adapted version, in fact, and found it to be a welcomed change. This book, having been created based on a song, is musical in nature and can be read or sung. I personally had a hard time not singing it; it just did not feel right! The pictures are beautiful and, paired with the words, make for a very touching book.
My mother used to read this book to me as a child and I was so excited when I came across it in the library. Hush Little Baby is a nursery rhyme that shows a mothers love for her child. The mother shows her child the simple things in nature that she finds beautiful like a hummingbird, the evening sky, and the sound of crickets. The mother also gives a bedspread and a teddy bear to comfort the child. The illustrations are so well painted and help to explain the story to a child that may not understand exactly what is taking place.
Maybe my favorite board book we have. The lyrics are all about experiences and nature rather than purchases. The images are beautiful illustrations, soft and sweet but still with high contrast to interest the tinier babies. It's one of the few lullabies I know all the lyrics to now. Since we've read and sang it so many times, it's now quite familiar and the baby loves to hear it with and without the book.
It reminded me of my childhood and how I once was a little kid myself. At this age of mine, I still enjoyed reading this book with classic words and the images were really appealing. I am sure young children will like this book, especially when someone they love like their moms read to them as they listen, watch, or rest.

We love sing-along books, especially when they’re based on nursery songs we already know. This is a darling version by Sylvia Long (who I’ve recently been checking out a lot at the library!). The lyrics are all different than the original, but still endearing as a mama rabbit puts her bunny to sleep.
This is a sweet rendition of the lullaby “hush little baby” that, instead of saying the things that will be purchased for the child (“momma’s gonna buy you a mockingbird”), the mom is going through the bedtime routine, showing the child the things to look at outside, reading books, and tucking her in to say goodnight.
This nursery rhyme is great for parents to read to their young children. It is a great bedtime story and as children get older, they can read it by themselves. It is very calming and helps infants to relax and fall asleep. It is about singing a baby to sleep and babies feel calm when their parents read this to them.
This is my all-time favorite lullaby. I grew up hearing the traditional lyrics about all the things that my momma was goin’ buy me. Silvia Long uses the same melody but weaves together beautiful lyrics about nature. The melody works with just about any name too!
I really love this update of a pretty weird song that was way too centered on acquisition of stuff for happiness. The song and the illustrations are beautiful. This is a bedtime favorite for us.
(My husband hates the use of the Papyrus font, but we'll call that a minor quibble.)
Nice take on the popular song, but switching out the materialistic verses for ones that show appreciation for nature. Story ties in with little references in the artwork. All for a more interesting “conversation” opportunites between adult and child.
Liked this so much because it isn't all about what mama or papa is going to BUY the baby, but things that they will show and do with the baby--hummingbirds, sunsets, etc. Illustrations contribute wonderfully to the book.
This is a beautiful reimagining of "Hush Little Baby" that focuses on the Mama giving their child unique, nature-based experiences rather than buying them things. The text is tender. The illustrations are lovely.
I really love this version of “hush little baby”. The illustrations are really sweet. This book makes me feel drowsy, but in a good way! Its a lullaby after all.
