Blackfeet Season

Rate this book
In Soul of the Sacred Earth Vella Munn illuminates the souls of her main characters. Fray Angelico yearns to save the savages from Satan; to learn that the Hopi have no interest in salvation nearly destroys him -- yet he defends the Indians when the rulers of New Spain would make them slaves. Captain Lopez has come seeking riches -- but the alien land rejects his military might. Morning Butterfly longs for the days of innocence before the Spanish came -- but then she would never have met Cougar, the Navajo brave who showed her that people of two faiths can live in harmony. Cougar never thought of the welfare of the Navajo -- but in the looming destruction of the Hopi he sees the fate of his own people, one he is desperate to avoid.

I had to edit my biography, changing my status from married to widow. Since I'm often asked how I'm doing, I'll put the answer here. For the most part I'm doing all right thanks to loving family and understanding friends.

I have two sons and four grandchildren. Two rescue dogs allow me to hug, walk, and feed them. In exchange they give me unconditional love and the occasional need for the carpet shampooer.

As the product of a rural upbringing, the wilderness, particularly mountains and evergreens are in my blood. I live in a small southern Oregon town which boasts four distinct seasons, an awesome river, and the ocean within a short drive. Ditto with Crater Lake.

Setting plays a big role in most of my writing as witness by two recent contemporary romance series set in Montana's awesome mountains.

Also writes as Dawn Flindt and Heather Williams.

This was amazing. I cannot say how much I loved this book. It's the second in the series. In this book the author did a great job blending her research with the story. The two romances were well done. From the beginning to end I was immersed in the book. No skimming! I'd say my fave character was Night Thunder. He was so real, filled with flaws and attributes. I especially loved his character arc from fear to faith. As for my fave couple of the two, Night Rider and Little Rain (the Cree captive) stole the show. Well done, Vella!

This book started out slow, but once you started getting to know the characters, it becomes a page turner. I'm not going to post spoilers... Vela Munn did a fantastic job of portraying the Blackfeet and Cree's old ways and their rivalry.

Highly recommended to all who like historical and First Nations stories.

This book is seeped in Native American tradition and the reader will get a sense of how the Blackfeet and the Cree lived and thought. I was mesmerized by everything in this book but I will be honest in the first few chapters I almost DNF'd it. For those of you who don't know what that acronym means it is "Did Not Finish". I am not used to reading historical fiction and in the beginning it felt like I was in History class. Don't let this turn you off. History buffs will love it. People who aren't addicted to romance novels like me will love it. Even people like me who love to read romance and paranormal novels will love it.

For me I connected with the story when White Calf and Raven's Cry starting to interact, the story changed 100 degrees. I began to understand why the author started the book like she did and I sat back and enjoyed the unfolding story.

The words on the pages had me going back to a time where tradition was everything and people did things for the good of all. It showed how families lived together and respected the elders. More importantly is showed how love was formed within arranged marriages. But the struggle to live in a rough life was what stood out for me as well as how one could come to love someone they hated.

Within this story is two love stories, both totally different from each other. My heart was appeased with these two and how they interweaved with each other. The secondary characters where just as impactful and developed as the primary ones leaving this reader fully satisfied when the book ended.

I give this 5 STARS and recommend it for all readers who want a dynamic read with more substance.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story is of course about a small tribe of Blackfeet. The main characters are brothers Raven's Cry and Night Thunder. Their relationship with their father is a big part of this book.

It is evident right away how difficult life was for the Native Indians, how the simplest required so much work. All for survival. Their joy came from their faith and families in general. I like the respect they had for the land, animals and what grew from the land.

I have to admit that it took me until half the book to really get into the story and I didn't really care for the father at all. He did not nurture his sons as he should have and when he did it was only to his benefit.

I did like seeing the brothers mature and grow closer. This was a journey that brought them together.

The reader is taken to the world of the Blackfeet of long ago as the tale of White calf and Raven's Cry find a pathway together and to help their people. Enjoyed this glimpse into a people as they survived and thrived in their world.

Ebook from netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are my own.
