Hold on for a rollicking, wickedly fun new mystery series from USA Today bestselling author Rhonda Pollero. Shopping, murder and romance all in one book? What a steal!

Meet Finley Anderson Tanner. FAT to her enemies. A West Palm Beach paralegal who hates the gym, still rents her condo, and loves two-hour lunches with her friends. But what really gets Finley hot is hunting down deeply discounted designer goods she can wear at her upscale law firm.

Too bad work isn't all about fashion. Especially when a grieving widow is sitting in your office, convinced that her husband's accidental death wasn't. Investigating murder isn't really Finley's bag (that would be Prada, 75% off), but the deeper Finley digs, the stranger things get, and this discount shopper knows slightly irregular when she sees it. Kind of like sexy Liam McGarrity. Everything about the hot, hunky P.I. screams, "Get out while you still have your underwear!"

For a girl whose biggest ambition is take-out Moo Shu at 5:01, life is taking some exciting, unpredictable, and decidedly dangerous turns. Someone doesn't like Finley's new work ethic. And if this paralegal wants to bring home the real goods, she'll have to keep from becoming a killer's total knock off...

An important thing you need to know about me when it comes to reading is I don’t read very fast and am not like some of my book buddies out there (you know who you are) that read hundreds of books a year. The next thing you need to know about me is I read this book in 2 DAYS!!! I could not put this book down, literally. You’re probably saying “you’re kidding.” I kid you not. Everywhere I went, I had this book with me reading, watching television, making dinner, sitting on the toilet…this was not one of those stories that I would pick up and read a paragraph or a page and be able to put it down. This book made me miss my program, burn dinner and cause pins and needles in my legs from lack of circulation! But it was so worth it!

When we first meet Finley, she is working as a paralegal for a firm handling estates and trusts. She gets pulled into a murder case when she inherits a client whose husband died and the client is convinced it wasn’t an accident. The client is very overbearing but Finley begins to look into her husband’s case. Finley isn’t your stereotypical airhead and she quickly learns that things about her client’s husband’s death aren’t adding up.

I really liked Finley. She’s not afraid of getting a little dirty and even receiving death threats don’t deter her from digging. Not having any murder investigation background at all, she manages to put her paralegal education to good use and begins researching. I was impressed at how tenacious she was since the client was a real pill.

Liam McGarrity is everything Finley’s not. He’s a former police officer who is carrying some secrets and it will be interesting to see how long before he opens up. Finley is convinced he has a wife, possibly an ex wife, that he is still sleeping with so I expect she will be digging into that scenario at some point.

There’s major attraction chemistry going on with Finley and Liam. I’m looking forward to seeing where that goes. Finley has a very difficult mother and their relationship is tense at best so I am curious to see how Finley responds to her mother’s criticism. Finley is in a relationship that the reader understands very explicitly is not the exciting love fest that Finley craves. It will be interesting to see if Finley stays with him in the second book. I have to admire Finley that though her relationship isn’t what she is hoping for and she is feeling major attraction vibes for Liam, Finley doesn’t jump into bed with him. I’m strongly hoping that the relationship issue gets resolved soon because Liam is yummy.

The plot moves forward at a great pace and the identity of the killer came as a surprise but not a shock. This is a great start to what I hope will be a very entertaining series. I am looking forward to seeing what Finley gets into next.

Knock Off, by Rhonda Pollero is what I call, “chick-lit mystery.” Has a “Sex and the City” vibe, which isn’t too surprising considering it was published in 2007, the same year that that show was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME", so while the book was being written, the TV show was at its peak.

Finley Anderson Tanner (F.A.T.) is the main character. She works in the paralegal department doing estates and wills at Dane, Lieberman and Zarnowski, and is roughly 29 to 30 years old (Finley isn't saying which.) She has designer taste in all accoutrements, but barely affords her passion for Lilly Pulitzer, Betsy Johnson and Jimmy Choo, having maxed out her credit. A lot of time is spent in the book on descriptions of Finley’s ensembles and her eBay coups when she wins a bidding war. She has a boyfriend, Patrick that she is beginning to lose interest in because he is too predictable. She has three other girlfriends, just like in Sex in the City, and prefers to go on lunch, shopping and spa dates than take her job seriously.

That changes when Finley gets a case to handle with a twist: Widow Stacy Evans says that her husband Marcus was murdered, contradicting the hospital’s claim that he died of a heart attack. Ms. Evans wants Finley to investigate the murder.

Our fluffy heroine does not know the first thing about investigating a murder, but she does know a lot of people who can help her. She calls on them, at first not finding anything to support Ms. Evan’s claim until seeing a tiny puncture mark in a photo of Marcus taken at the scene of the accident. With the help of an ex-cop detective that she lusts after, Liam McGarrity, she pursues the case, even when her law firm suspends her when she embarrasses them by blurting out her association with them after pulling a B&E to retrieve a cup, a clue to Marcus’s murder.

Other murders happen and begin to appear associated with Marcus’s death. The new murder victims all served together with Marcus Evans on a jury trial of Dr. Kent Hall, a client of Dane, Lieberman and Zarnowski. The firm defended Dr. Hall in a wrongful death case where the widow claimed her husband’s death was caused by Dr. Hall’s negligence. It wasn’t; he died of complications from an after-surgery infection and the jurors ruled in Dr. Hall’s favor. At first, Finley thinks the grieving widow is killing off jurors, but this later does not prove to be the case, when she meets the widow who is in a continuous state of alcoholic despair. Due to her perpetual intoxication, she would not have had the wherewithal to plan and execute the murders.

Who did? Zoe Hall, the Hall’s teenage daughter, who one day overhears one of the jurors trying to blackmail her father, Dr. Hall, not because of the wrongful death suit, but because the heart was harvested before the donor was legally dead, something that this particular juror knows because he served as a medic and was on the case when the donor was barely alive. Zoe does not know specifically who the blackmailer is; just that he is one of the male jurors from her Dad’s trial.

In the end, we don’t know where Finley’s attraction to Liam will go or what she’ll do about her steady, but she does get exonerated, awarded a big bonus, a new position in the firm and a new office. There’s more F.A.T. stories in the series, so if Finley grows on you, you can read them and find out.

I don't really like Finley Tanner, so I can't really LIKE a mystery with her as its heroine. I find her character is just, um, repugnant. I guess she and I don't share much of the same world view, and apparently, that matters when reading a fluffy book like "Knock Off". I don't care about her BCBGirls peep toe sandals. I don't care about her perfect pilot boyfriend and whether or not he's "the ONE". I don't care about what lingerie she decides to wear or whether or not she wins her eBay auction for a Rolex part. So...I don't care about whether she lives or dies, which matters when you are supposed to be sympathetic to the lead character. I found this book to be very trivial and not well written enough to pull it through the triviality. I understand that "chick-lit" is now permeating other genres, but isn't there an author out there who can create a smart, interesting and yet still fun, funny heroine? If they're smart they apparently have no sense of humor, and if they're funny they must also either be obsessed with fashion and labels, have no head for math and science, think more about dating than solving the mystery, or get themselves into a dangerous jam where a man has to come to their rescue-preferably the man they are thinking about instead of solving the mystery. It's like reading about Detective Barbie. Boring...

Mystery, Mayhem, Manolo Blahnik. Warning: if you are anti-girly-girl, walk away now. Quick read. Quick witted. Thoroughly enjoyed the fashionista humor and appreciation for caffeine, carats, and clothing throughout. The main character and her sidekicks are fairly engaging. Could have done without the main character's (Finley) apathy towards her love interest - what woman whines about a boyfriend that spoils her, doesn't smother her, is great in bed, and never forgets a birthday?!?! The author should have given us more cause to believe in Finley's apathy. Also, found it difficult to find anything appealing that would make me want to root for Finley and her annoying infatuation with the PI, other than good looks...would have preferred some more depth there in both characters. The ending was a bit of a let down and wrapped up a bit too quickly for my taste. All that said, however, the book definitely exceeded my expectations. When a book cover shows a flirty pink gun floating in a sea of bright yellow with funfetti adjectives spraying from the barrel...well, let's just say one doesn't expect complexity...but I did anticipate fun characters with snappy dialog and Rhonda Pollero more than delivered the goods.

Anyway, I started out by turned off by the protagonist. Finley is a paralegal and spends the first 30 or 4o pages explaining how she is irresponsible with money a credit abuser, a compulsive shopper of name brand items, and a nightmare co-worker. She basically brags about coming in late and taking long lunches, lying to her employer about going to the courthouse and meeting her friends for long lunches instead. I almost put the book down but I was too comfy in my lounge chair and didn’t want to get up to get another book so I continued.

I’m glad that I did. The mystery turned out to be quite good and Finley redeemed herself somewhat by working hard once she got involved in solving the mystery. I liked all the twists and turns and connections to other victims. I also enjoyed the legal theme and the investigative techniques. The writing is well done. I still will not say that the protagonist is one of my favorites but there is enough else good in the book to redeem it. Perhaps the problem is me, I tend to need to like characters or at least relate to them, in order to like a book… or maybe I’m a little too old for the target demographic.

All paralegal Finley wants to do is call in her job so she can go discount designer clothes shopping. But a client suggests her husband was murdered and so starts Finley's journey into well-dressed sleuth.

I almost put this book aside after the first chapter as Finley seemed so shallow. However, the plot added intrigue at just the right moment so I kept going. The middle is entertaining and well-written, but the end is a disappointment. Pretty much everything you're told not to do to tie up a mystery plot is on display here. That said, it was worth the price I paid for a pre-read book and there were some great humorous moments.

Finley is a paralegal who doesnt take work as seriously as she takes her shopping. But one day, her boss gives her a case to handle. The widow of a man in an accident who thinks it is murder.Nothing supports her claims. But when Finley investigates she finds out the widow may be right.

I liked Finley, her search for bargains and her determination to find the truth. I will definitely read more of this series

This is precisely what you think. Finley has a boyfriend who doesn’t excite her like the good looking PI, Liam. Her friends are all fabulous. Her mother is a pill. Her coworkers don’t like her. Yep.. pretty formulaic but likable. I’d give another star but the ending was weak. I don’t believe in Fin’s attraction to Liam other convenient writing. I also have a hard time with a paralegal in estates and trusts getting into that much debt. Just… yeah… but complete brain candy.

This may be my second or third Finley Tanner novel and I have enjoyed the all. Rhonda Pollero writes a fun, humorous novel that never bogs down or gets off the mark. Not as silly as Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels, never the less try this on for size. I am keeping all of the Finley Tanner novels in my personal library.

This is the 1st of a new series. Finley Anderson Tanner *FAT* is a quirky Stephanie Plum-like kind of girl. There were parts that made me laugh out loud, but I wasn't loving the ending - hopefully the next will have a better ending.

Now that Janet Evanovich has sold her soul to the continuing publication of her (lately) relentlessly boring Stephanie Plum series, try this on for size. Better than the "16."

My new favorite sleuth!

Finley is a flawed, likable character and I can't wait to start reading about her next adventure! Starting the next book immediately! :)

Findley is somewhat like Evanovich’s character Stephanie Plum.. but Finley isn’t as likeable as Stephanie. Finley is smart but hasn’t had to use her brains much. She is much more into fashion – especially “vintage fashion” meaning items from the 1940-1970 time period. Although Finley works as an Estates and Trusts para-legal in a South Florida Law Office, she lives paycheck to paycheck and doesn’t really own much. She doesn’t get along well with her rich 6 times married mother, and spends most of the free time searching for fashion bargains on e-bay or at discount houses. Her job is now on the line and to save it she decides to help a client prove that her husband’s death wasn’t an accident. She needs help to figure out why members of a trial held 3 years earlier are dying in strange accidents.. and gets the help from a “hot” PI (former cop) and her 2 girlfriends who are a lawyer and a doctor. Her boyfriend (a pilot) is in and out of the story, probably building up to a bigger role in the next novel of the series. --- I think this book is more for a younger reader – someone from 15 to 40???? – Maybe they will know (and appreciate) the fashion emphasis and sex comments more than I did.

Read this many years ago, and I've read many cozy mysteries since. This stands out as my favorite series. The MC may seem a little silly, but she was also one of the most relatable for me. She has a decent job, is excited by fashion and making good finds, and I was a little impressed by her watch-building project. She's just a young, single woman doing what she does, and trying to stay happy. I liked the Florida environment and Liam's persona. I was sad when I finished the series. I'll download this next and see if my opinion's changed.

I decided to read this book when I saw West Palm Beach setting. This was a quick fun read, and I concur with another reviewer’s description of Sex in the City meets murder. The premise of story was interesting and the murder was a surprise.
I did get bored with the fashion references, eBay bids, and coffee drink references. I’m intrigued enough by the setting and characters to pursue the next book in the series.

Who knew that a paralegal who is very happy in her job and has no intentions of trying to climb the corporate ladder could get her dander up and solve a murder. Finley was given a job to appease a client and got curious about some details and dug into trying to understand what she was seeing and being told. Lots of twists and turns in this one.

Such a fun read! And not something I would normally read.

I got it from my library that does a fun "blind date with a book." The books are hidden and you pick one based off a quote from the book. Here was the quote that got me...

If I could find a way to deep-fry chocolate, my life would be whole.

Pretty biphobic and accidentally transphobic. I say accidentally because the main character refers to someone who is bisexual as “The He She”. I know what she meant but big fuckin yikes. Would have been enjoyable outside of that though so 2 stars

The story was interesting enough but I could not stand the main character. What an immature, pathetic excuse for a grown woman with a professional job. The drinking (coffee and alcohol), eating like crap, and the overspending drove me crazy. Not only was reading about all the shopping boring, but it really pissed me off that she could be that irresponsible. She can’t even remember to water plants so she goes further into debt replacing her mother’s plants that she killed. Repeatedly. And the fantasizing was overdone and drawn out. We get it. She has a nice predictable guy who treats her well and she’s attracted to someone new so she’s conflicted. Blah, blah, blah. Also the ending was abrupt and unrealistic. I don’t plan to read additional books by this author.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I’ve had this novel for years. For a very, very long time. I wanted something light after a few failed readings that I chose another novel from my TBR pile that I had for a long time in French, except that after a while, I realized that in fact I found that there were quite a few references to other things and I was surprised. Well, it was perfectly normal because it was a Volume 2! Yes, yes, yes! So I looked at Goodreads, and what did I see? That I actually have Volume 1! Yes! I had book 2 in French, and book 1 in English. After an episode of real caving, I finally got my hands on it and paused Volume 2 to discover the first part of our heroine’s adventures. And finally, I can tell you that it’s much better in that sense and now I can continue Volume 2 with all the elements in mind! That’s better, isn’t it?

So we discover Finely who is a legal assistant. She usually takes care of the estates, but now her boss is giving her a file that will bother her. Indeed, a wealthy woman comes to her to explain that she thinks her husband was a victim of a murder and she wants Finley to find out what happened, because the police don’t believe her at all. Finley, who thought that this affair would be easy, finally discovers elements that could go in the lady’s direction. Unfortunately, going through people’s belongings, and bringing up an old case that has already been forgoten, could well cost her her life and work!

I had a good time with Finley and I’m curious to see how Volume 2 will be now. I understand her feelings for Patrick and I admit that Liam makes me quite curious and I look forward to seeing how all this will turn out.

It was a refreshing reading, perfect for a light and humorous moment. Now I’m off to the next one!
