With soft whispers and a gentle touch, Tessa Seaton can tame the wildest beasts. The daughter of an impoverished baronet, controlled by an unscrupulous uncle, her remarkable talent for calming and riding unbroken horses makes her a valuable asset, though she dreams of independence and stables of her own one day. Then Lord Anthony Northrup unexpectedly gallops into her life.
The gentleman will not be deterred...
At first, Anthony is shocked and angered by the fetching maid who fools unsuspecting souls into purchasing unsuitable steeds. But when he realizes Tessa acts out of love, the dashing nobleman is enchanted. He must release the remarkable lady somehow from her distasteful servitude and have her to cherish forever. But Tessa is no damsel in distress, and she will not be tamed; rather, it is she who must set Anthony's heart free with her unique gift and passionate fire.

This book is not one of Ms. Hiatt’s “Saint of Seven Dials” series. However, there are two couples who are secondary characters in the second half of the book who are from that series (A Rebellious Bride and Wickedly Yours). This story is about Tessa Seaton and Lord Anthony Northrup who meet in the country where Tessa lives (Anthony is there for the foxhunting). Tessa’s family- her father, uncle, and cousin train and sell horses. This is easy to do because of Tessa’s “gift” with horses- her ability to calm them (and it doesn’t hurt that she’s an expert rider). However, in her family nothing is as it seems as they are all lying to each other. Anthony has never been so taken with any woman in his life and strives to make Tessa his bride. Ms. Hiatt always writes well researched books- this being one of them. So, the descriptions of horses and foxhunting scenes are incredibly specific. I did not mind that in the least, as other reviewers did, however, I DO mind when foxhunting terminology gets used in the love scenes as a comparison! Perhaps Ms. Hiatt did that to try to give her characters chemistry- which wasn’t lacking at the beginning, but when they got to know each other more, the chemistry definitely fizzled out.
A romance set in 1816, Leicestershire, England. Tessa is the daughter of an impoverished Baronet. She has the ability to calm high strung horses down. Her uncle uses Tessa talent to sell horses that are still green. Anthony finds out and is worried that someone might get hurt. He is also falling in love with Tessa.
what a god awful cover, repeat, wash, repeat, what a god awful cover the story a water skimmer bug but for those of us who still crave anything horse centered, not a bad read, not a great read, but not bad. has all the elements, the villains, the blackmail, the deceptions, and then comes the hero. Tessa is a horse whisperer, something we all wish we were. a satisfying romp, villains get theirs, the father so coddled comes back to himself, and Tessa finds true love. a high school level. some smart repartee, some beautiful horseflesh, but a few ends left dangling, i.e. what happens to Vulcan. Obviously he should become a foundation stallion for the renewed stud which has lost some of its reputation. It might be addressed in further adventures. a very quick and clean read.
Tessa Seaton is an admirable horsewoman with an invalid father and money troubles. Her pushy relations convince her to make horses look more trained than they actually are to sell them for more than their worth. Lord Anthony is disturbed when several of these horses end up in the hands of riders who can't handle them, and investigates the Seaton stables himself. They fall in love over their shared competence and interests, and it's really quite sweet.
The one thing that kept throwing me out of this book, which I otherwise enjoyed, was the names. Not just the nicknames, like "Killer" or "Thor," but female characters have names like "Quinn."
Lots of exciting adventure with this story. A daughter tries to take care of her ailing father and her uncle tries to take both of them for a ride. Enter a fox hunting bible and lots of half trained horses and the stage is set for romance and adventure! Loved it! Great beginning to a new series! Can't wait to read on! Great read!
In spite of my not riding, I've always been a fan of equestrian novels. The story was exciting and action-packed. I was also delighted with what I'm pretty sure was a cameo by the infamous Mrs. Mountheath!
Wonderful characters and good story. I do love to read about a talented lady. Anthony as a younger son who embraces it is definitely pleasant change. Their mutual love of horses and riding was really well written.
I Gor about half way through and The hen skipped to the end. There wasn't a whole lot to capture my interest. There was no real depth to any of the characters so I couldn't make any connection.
Insgesamt war mir die Story etwas zu langwierig, aber dennoch spannend und verzwickt. Ich wurde gut unterhalten. Gerade Tessas Art, mit den Pferden zu kommunizieren, fand ich sehr interessant.
The daughter of a country baronet who is an invalid, Tess Seaton, has a way with even the wildest horse. Now she rides them in the hunt so they can be sold to raise money to restore Seaton Hall at the urging of her uncle, the estate manager. On his way to his hunting lodge, Lord Anthony Northrup is rescued by the Lady Tess in breeches who calms his frightened horse. When he realizes who she is, Anthony finds excuses to be around her and soon puzzles out her situation. Attraction soon follows and then he sets out to win her heart. However, Tess realizes that Anthony is far above her station and she cannot hope to reach that high. Fate, though, has a different ending in store for them.
When the story dealt with the hunt, it was interesting but when it moved to London, it wasn't. The truth behind the state of Seaton Hall was really no surprise either, just to Tess' father. However, I did enjoy Tess' independent spirit in a time when women weren't allowed much freedom.
